What is a mastermind group?
A mastermind group is a group of people who come together to share ideas, stories, and insights with the goal to help each other grow. Mastermind groups have been around for a very long time, but became more popular in the early 1900’s with the publication of Napoleon Hill’s best seller “The Law of Success”.
Since that time, thousands of successful people have experienced the power of the mastermind.
(Examples of mastermind groups from history)
Of course, not all groups are equal. At Author of Your Own Story, we’ve participated in and led mastermind groups for over a decade. During that time, we’ve seen what works and incorporated it, while getting rid of what we’ve found was just fluff or a waste of everyone’s time.
“It’s often said that iron sharpens iron; meaning that you get stronger through working with others who are also working to better their lives. Motivational speaker and internationally recognized speaker Jim Rohn said, “You are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” A properly run mastermind group will surround you with people who are raising their game in their lives, and by surrounding yourself with people on that level, you will raise the quality of your life as well.”
John F. Kennedy
Mastermind groups from the past
As stated earlier, mastermind groups of various types have been around for a very long time. So who has used a mastermind group to better their lives?
- Benjamin Franklin –The Leather Apron Club
- Henry Ford – The Vagabonds
- Thomas Edison – The Vagabonds
- Warren G. Harding – The Vagabonds
- Harvey Firestone – The Vagabonds
- John Burroughs – The Vagabonds
- Theodore Roosevelt – The Tennis Cabinet
What are some of the benefits of a well-run mastermind group?
The benefits of the AYS Mastermind Groups are too many to list, but here are a few that we hear often:
Accountability – We all need to be held accountable, not only to ourselves, but to those around us. Our mastermind groups provide accountability to make sure you’re staying on top of your game and taking your life to the next level. Just like having a coach can provide a support structure to keep you moving in the right direction, your AYS Mastermind Group will also provide you accountability with your fellow members. We often are quick to let ourselves down and make excuses, but it’s much harder to let someone else down. It’s human nature and we use this to our full advantage!
Personal & Business Growth – The mastermind groups we run are geared around personal and business growth. Just like a plant, you need to continually grow or you will become stagnant. Your group will provide you with continued insight and growth each session. Our team brings with it $100,000’s of thousands of dollars’ worth of education to help you grow in ways you’ve probably never even dreamed. Imagine what your life would look one year from today if you continued to grow each and every week. Life would never be the same! Support from your
Peers – The mastermind groups provide a safe support system. We all go through hard times and although we are not therapists, the group serves as a safe place to be supported through those tough times in our lives, even when society tells us we should simply bottle everything in and act as if we’re OK. Your group will call you out on your bullshit, but also become your biggest cheerleaders.
A Different Point of View – We keep the groups small and diverse on purpose. If you surround yourself with people of the same point of view, it’s hard to grow. You’ll be able to hear different perspectives that will provide you with different ways of looking at topics, thus allowing you exponential growth. This is an often overlooked benefit of our mastermind groups.
Resources – Your facilitator will be providing you with resources and the group is encouraged to share with each other as well. Only the top 1% are willing to dive deep to become the author of their own story, so your fellow masterminders are also a great resource. These are highly motivated and educated individuals who can assist you along your journey.
How are the Author of Your Own Story Mastermind Groups run?
Your AYS Mastermind Group will be run by an experienced facilitator who will combine both teaching, coaching, and facilitation conversation topics amongst the group. Just as each of us are different, each group is also slightly different, and like water, the groups are structured, yet fluid to provide the best results.
A typical AYS Mastermind Group meeting lasts 50 minutes and looks like this:
Minutes 0-5: Group News and Catch-Up
Minutes 6-40: Hot-Seat, Teaching, or Synergy Session
Hot-Seat: A “hot-seat” session is where one member of the AYS Mastermind Group is put front-and-center to experience the power of the mastermind. This individual presents the biggest “issue” in his or her life and the group works together to help them overcome that issue. Often, the members of the group participating in helping the person in the hot-seat, get just as much out of these sessions as the person being helped. Hot-Seat sessions are scheduled in advance, so you’ll know when it’s your turn to be coached. Speed Hot-Seat sessions will also be scheduled where the time is divided by the number of people in the group and each person is given laser focused guidance on the biggest challenge they are facing at that time in their life or business.
Teaching: Our trained staff will teach a predetermined educational session, teaching the group both business and life lessons, that can be applied right away. These educational trainings led by the needs of the group as a whole and determined by the facilitator.
Synergy Session: A synergy-session is where a topic is brought up and a round table discussion takes place. Topics vary widely and the goal of these sessions is spur new ideas amongst the group to allow everyone to grow.
Minutes 40-50: Accountability, Lifework (if applicable), and Connection Time
We’ve found that in our modern era, we can leverage technology to bring people together in a way that not only fosters growth, but also allows for the human element often missed with other groups.
Our groups are currently all run through a high-speed cloud based video communication system. This system allows for group video, chatting, and recording of sessions so you can catch up on a meeting if you miss one.
