Imagine that you are approached by Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods in his prime. Now you’ve never golfed before but he puts a bet on the line. He says, “Hey look, I will bet you $5,000,000, we are going to golf one year from today, winner takes all.” Now, are you going to go and do what most people seem to be talking about these days? Are you going to go dive into the psychology behind playing golf? Are you going to go work on getting your master’s degree in psychology? Are you going to pick up every book that you can find at the library or the bookstore on the subject matter of psychology?
Are you going to read every self-help personal development book? I sure hope not, because game day comes, your mind might be right, but your golf swing certainly won’t be. Now I’m not downplaying the role of psychology, but I want to talk about sweat equity, or actually getting some experience. Now if you are going to play, and you really want to get good, you want to win because there is a lot of money on the line, my guess is the first thing you are going to do is you are going go out and get a golf coach.
A coach can help you really exponentially get better rather than just going out there swinging by yourself. They have been there, done that, and a good coach is going to have skills and techniques that are going to help you exponentially improve your game. You are going to go to the driving range, the putting ground, and you are actually going to be practicing, what, 10, 12, 15 hours a day every day?
Again, I’m not discounting the psychological component. Sports psychology I think is extremely important. But implementing sports psychology is actually part of an element to actually getting experience, getting the work done, utilizing that sweat equity to get yourself out there and actually playing some golf. Now if you do that every day, by the end of the year you’re going to have to play Tiger Woods, you’ve got a fighting chance. Are you going to win? Who knows, but you are certainly going to do a lot better than just hiding behind a book.
Now why do I bring this up? I bring this up because on social media I see all these gurus and people that I really respect, but often times they are always talking about the psychology of something. They are talking about things that they have never actually really gone out and experienced. They themselves are hiding behind books. How do I know this? Because I’ve had one of them reach out to me. One of them reached out to me and the first thing they said to me is, “I apologize.”
Of course, I was taken aback. “Apologize for what?” They said, “I apologize because I was listening to your daily growth hacks, and I was criticizing them. You stumble over words, you are not professional. There are all these things that are going wrong with the daily growth acts. I mean I like the information but it’s not as polished as a radio person or a radio personality.” Or, “Your background is off. Then, Doug, I caught myself. I realized that I’ve wanted to have a show of my own for over five years and I haven’t done it, and here you are out there doing it.”
They looked at me and they said, “what’s going to happen a year from now is you’re going to get better, you’re going to get good at this, and I’m still going to be here and that’s why I apologize.” Now see I don’t talk about this to brag about myself or anything, this person came out to me. That takes a lot of guts, but the idea is they are preaching to better your psychology and what they practice. They are preaching things that they have never experienced rather than just going out and getting your hands dirty and starting something, working at it. There is no better experience.
As a business owner myself, I can tell you I’ve made more mistakes than I care to admit, but I learn from those mistakes. Those learning lessons are things that I would never get out of a textbook. I’m going to ask you, you are playing Tiger Woods a year from now. Let’s take Tiger Woods out of the game and let’s imagine your five to thrive. That’s your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business. Where, a year from now, are you going to have a $5 million bet on the line. Go ahead and put that bet, something you really want.
Where are you hiding behind waiting to get the right information? Waiting to get the psychology, waiting for the best personal help, or personal development guru, or self-help book that’s out there rather than putting the rubber to the road. Maybe you need to get a coach, maybe you don’t. Maybe you just need to go out there and experience and fail and pick yourself up time and time again so you get better at it. I don’t know, this is your journey, this is your story. I’m here to help you become an author of your own story so you can go out and live a life of passion and a life you’ve dreamed of. You deserve it.
I want you to grab your journal, don’t just listen to this and just think of this as another exercise. Grab your journal, write down your five to thrive, write down where you want to be a year from now, and then get resourceful. You want to start a business, but don’t know anything about business and not sure where to go? Talk to a business owner? Don’t know any business owners? Great, look at social media. If you are on Facebook, I’m sure you have a few on there that you can just ping and ask. Or, LinkedIn is a great resource. Heck, walk down the street into your brick and mortar shop and ask them. When I had a brick and mortar store for over 15 years, I had people come in every single year and ask me questions.
I would sit down with them, oftentimes I would go for a walk or get coffee and share my knowledge and help them shorten the distance of that learning curve that I went through. I encourage you to do this, I really appreciate if you go over to the author of your own story community and share your insights. This is going to help others grow as well, and you are going to help me impact over a million people which is my goal.
