Taking Small Steps To Make A Big Impact

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5595538/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now a lot of times when I’m working with somebody or talking in a group, I often hear somebody talk about you know, I want to go to Africa and end hunger there. Or end poverty in Uganda. Or maybe it’s somebody talking about something they want to go to Columbia and put in a program in place. Or clean water wells. Or whatever it may be. And oftentimes, they have this huge goal, and I support them fully. But what they don’t realize is they could start today in their own communities. You can take small steps now at a local level to get your self-started. So maybe it is you want to give back, you want to help the women of the world. Go to a local shelter for women in your local community. Reach out and start there as you’re building this big dream of yours.

You know maybe it’s ending world hunger and you’re working on your advisory board, you’re working on your program and I again, I support you. But also go down to a local shelter and actually help serve food there. Start with hunger in your own backyard as you grow this bigger. You see often times we set these huge goals and they only set us back because they’re so big, they seem enormous and we have to get them right.

Here’s what I trying to tell you is you don’t have to get it right, right now. You can make a difference by starting small. Making small steps. Just like my friend who wants to travel the world and he’s been talking about this for five years. Yet he hasn’t been out to the islands right across the harbor from where I’m standing. You know these small steps will allow you to achieve your goals. It’s momentum. It’s the progress. It’s putting on the running shoes in the morning to help you lose 50 pounds and just taking a walk. It’s the first step of every journey. And I’m here to tell you, you can start today and start in your local community.

Small steps make big impacts over time. Big dreams are great. But they always take small chunks. And it reminds me of that analogy of how do you eat an elephant, right? Kids tell this joke often. It’s one bite at a time. So I’m going to ask you, where in your world, where in your goals do you have a big, huge dream, that you’ve been holding off with because it’s almost unattainable to you. Your subconscious is stopping you, or maybe you’re waiting till next year when the job is right, or when the kids are out of the house or whatever it may be, and where can you start at a micro level right today?

Not tomorrow, but today and take action. And I’m going to invite you to do that. I’m going to invite you to take action with me right at this moment. Get your journal out, write down those goals, look over your goals, write them down and where can you take action in your local community or just even in your own home, and where can you take action today? Remember never leave the place of an insight, the place of an idea happening, without taking immediate action to make something happen right then and there. And I’m asking you to do this now. That’s it for me today. Remember, go out and be the Author of Your Own Story.

A Thousand Beautiful Now Moments

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5595477/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today I’m gonna focus a little bit more on relationships and talk about a thousand now moments and how you could possibly be one of those people missing them. You see, often times we focus on the future, on a future problem and we miss the now. And I’m gonna give you an example. I had a client call me to tell me that they are really stressed out because their wife had been unfaithful a year ago. And they were worried that their wife was gonna do this again. See, their wife was going on a girls trip and although they had reconciled their marriage, their wife was leaving and now he was having an abundance of anxiety and didn’t know what to do. He was stressing and he would project and take that out on her. He would lash out on her, everything she would do. Maybe she didn’t do the dishes right, he would get upset. He was just being mean and he knew it.

He was so focused on what she could be doing on this trip. Was she being unfaithful? Was she being unfaithful on social media? Did she have somebody else on the side? Who was she texting? What was she doing late up at night? When she’d go to the bathroom in the evening, was she secretly pulling out her phone and texting this other person? He was just so consumed and projecting into the future what she could be doing to him that he missed a thousand moments with her. You see, he loved his wife. And yes, what she did was wrong, but they’ve reconciled their marriage and they came together. But him projecting into the future, this possible potential hurt, it was tearing them apart. He was literally pushing her away while trying to attract her at the same time.

Now how often do we all do this? Right? We project something that’s happened to us into the future. Maybe even injured. Maybe it’s been something physical and you’ve tripped while you’ve run. Or something as simple and stupid like that. Or maybe like you’re me and you stumble in front of the camera and as you’re talking to people you actually think about stumbling and so you do it again. Whatever it is, are you missing those thousand moments right here, right now? Especially with the people you love? Especially with yourself? Are you not taking the time to smell the roses, ’cause you’re so worried about them wilting in the future, that you don’t even stop to smell them and enjoy them in a moment?

What I want you to do is grab your journal, and of course, if you’re driving or working out, use voice notes or when you get home, grab your journal and write this down. What I want you to do is write down some of those moments, and we all have them, some of those moments where you’re projecting problems into the future. You’re projecting something that’s going to happen that hasn’t yet happened, but it’s forcing you not to enjoy the now. You’re not enjoying this current time, right here. Right here with me. You and I. What can you enjoy about this? And then what I want you to do is focus on that and let it go. Realize that by focusing on the now, you can’t look in the future, you can’t look in the past. Your life is happening moment by moment, second by second. And if you’re so focused on the future or looking in the past, you’re missing a thousand good moments right here and right now.

Abundance and Success

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5590571/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Abundance and success. Abundance is talked about all the time. There are books on abundance. There are podcasts on abundance. There are videos. The Secret talks about Abundance. There are all these things about abundance, but I think it’s so commonly misunderstood. The reason I say that is how do you define abundance? How do you define success?

Are you defining success on my terms? Are you defining success on somebody else’s terms, or are you defining success and abundance on your own terms? Do you have an abundant amount of energy? Do you have an abundant amount of love in your life? Most of the most successful people I know in the world aren’t always financially successful as others. What I mean by that is, they’re not the richest people financially, but often times, they’re successful because they’re the richest people in their relationships, in their holistic environment, in their five to thrive.

Having that holistic sphere, and defining success that way, is absolutely amazing, but you need to define it for you. You need to define what is abundance for you. I know people, and I’m sure you do, that aren’t financially as savvy. Maybe they don’t have millions of dollars, but their abundance of energy, the way they pour love into people when you talk to them is amazing. I just got off the phone with an old client of mine and an old friend. When I talked to him, he’s 76, and I whatever I just feel the abundance of love, the abundance of the joy of life that comes out of him, just even from a phone call. To me, that’s successful, and that’s how he defines success.

He was an extremely successful painter, and actually still is, and does really well. He made a pivot early in his life and defined success and abundance in a different way. You see, he defined it as, the quality of the relationships he had, and the amount of love he was able to pour out. He invested at an early age, into courses, into actual seminars, into things where he could expand his abundance of love into the world. This shows to this day. Again, he’s in his 70s, and this accumulation of abundance and just pure joy comes out of him. Every time I talk to him, I feel better. I feel like I’m getting chicken soup for my soul. That’s out of him.

Today, I’m going to ask you, get out your journal and write down, what does success mean to you? This isn’t a short question, and it’s not one you have to get perfectly. It’s something that probably evolves over time. As your writing that, I want to know, are you abundant in that area? Are you abundant in your mind? Are you abundant in your body? Are you abundant in your soul? How about your relationships, is there abundant love flowing out of you, and into you, being received? Are you abundant in your financial gifts? Are you able to live a luxurious life, or a life that you define as luxurious and one that you dream of?

If not, you should be. You deserve all of that and more. Yeah, you get to put in the work. That’s great, and that’s why we have the author of Your Own Story University, for some of you to help you along that path. Others of you, it’s going to be something different. It doesn’t matter. Putting in the work, and directing yourself towards this abundance is the key. Having that laser like focus come through with a flow and ease to you. Abundance can mean a lot of things, and a lot of people again, think of this as something that could be woo-woo, or just the universe is just going to magically send it to you.

I disagree. I think abundance is defined in your own terms and can come from you. As an example, when you’re tired, ask yourself this question. If you just found out, got a phone call that you won the lottery, you won a hundred million dollars right then and there, would your energy increase? Absolutely, of course, it would. You have that energy inside of you now. Now, why not act as if. Be abundant with your energy. Be abundant with your love. Be abundant with your spirit. Be abundant with your financial gains, and abundant with your dreams. Define success and abundance on your own terms.

You Can’t See Point C Unless You Get to Point B

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5590487/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today I’m going to answer a question that was put in the Author of Your Own Story group by Barbara. Barbara essentially is asking, “Hey, look. I’ve been going really hard towards this solution, or towards this direction, but now it’s just not filling me up. I’m not finding that this is a viable path for me, and I just don’t think this is the way I want to go, but how do I know that I’m not just giving up because it’s getting difficult, and moving onto the next shiny new object instead of actually pushing through and finding something? Or, finding my other passion?”

Well, this is a great question. It’s something that I think all of us have had, right? We start working on a project that we’re really passionate about, only to find out that it’s really either too difficult, or it’s just not something we’re interested in. Now, business owners have this all the time. They call it Shiny New Object Syndrome. Now the difference between this and what Barbara is talking about is Shiny New Object Syndrome is working on something, and then all of a sudden switching paths because something else looks more fun. It looks more interesting. Now, this happens with software programs, right? We start working with one software program when we buy the year subscription, and next thing you know, we want to work with SEO tools. Then it’s digital marketing, and it’s content marketing, or whatever it may be.

This also happens in technology, and us men, we really get this a lot, where we’re always looking for the newest, greatest things. You know, I have a 55-inch plasma TV, but now I need the 65-inch big screen. This is different, though, what Barbara is talking about. What Barbara is asking here is, hey look, I’ve been working hard towards this vision I have, and now that I’m working on it, I don’t really know if it’s the vision I want. I actually possibly want something else.

This happens all the time, and this is where I’m saying you can’t know C without going to B. If I decide that I’m going to go from point A to point B, and I’m working there, and on my way to B I can look around the corner and I see point C in the distance, and I then know that’s where I want to go. Now, if I wasn’t going towards B, if I wasn’t making that shift, making those choices, making that effort to go to B, I would never know that C existed and it would be impossible for me to make that pivot.

See, going to something different doesn’t mean you’re quitting if you’re doing it for the right reasons. What I mean by that is, as I’m going towards my goal, my goal is point B from A. If I’m going towards my goal, and on that route, I discover something that I previously did not know was possible, we’re going to call that point C. Now I can make a conscious shift, not out of fear, but a conscious shift from the heart out of love of what I want to do, and go to C because now I know that exists. I didn’t know what I didn’t know beforehand.

This is the reason we shouldn’t beat ourselves up. We shouldn’t have this self-judgment. We all do, right? We’re all our own worst critics. When I shoot these videos, I can name a hundred things I don’t like about my physical self, or things that … the lighting, the background, the shirt that I’m wearing, whatever it is. We’re our worst critics, but where we’re going for a goal, especially for high achievers, Barbara … When you’re going for a goal, sometimes you have that innate you have to finish, but that’s not true. If you have new information, new insights, and new ideas, you can make that pivot. You can turn and realize that the real direction you want to go to was something you didn’t even know existed. Also, on top of that, you’re changing.

You can turn and realize that the real direction you want to go to was something you didn’t even know existed. Also, on top of that, you’re changing. Every day, we’re changing. I have a newborn, and every single day I can see physical changes in my newborn. He’s crawling. Now he’s doing something else. He’s grabbing onto objects. Every day, it’s a tangible thing.

We as adults make the same changes, but we’re making those changes internally. We’re making those changes based on our universe, and our world experience, and what we’re getting our eyes open too, so we shouldn’t stop realizing that with those changes are going to come new perspectives. We wouldn’t expect a child to all of a sudden stop doing something, or stop growing or stop thinking differently as their world changes in front of them, because their eyes have been opened. This is happening to us as adults as well, and we should give ourselves the grace to realize that while making these changes, we’re going to see new perspectives and new realities that we didn’t see previously.

So Barbara, to answer your question, you know whether you’re quitting, or whether you’ve just found the right path if this is a new path and you’re not quitting out of fear. Now if you’re moving towards fear, or away from fear, excuse me, then that’s the issue. That’s a no. It’s a red flag if you’re scared about moving away, but if you’re moving towards, if you’re feeling yourself pulled towards something from the heart, that’s a good thing. That’s what the worlds all about. You’re not meant to be in this confined box. Now, as you’re going toward B, now you see C. Move in that direction, and move in that direction with pure joy. I hope this helps you. I’d love to hear your feedback, and I’d love to hear more about your story.

The Digital Lifestyle

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5588758/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, I just got back from the beach out here in beautiful Santa Barbara, California and we’re staying at a beach house overlooking the ocean and it’s absolutely magnificent. I’m running up here to shoot this Daily Growth Hack because I just got off the phone with an old client of mine. When I got off the phone, I related the conversation to a colleague of mine who said, “You know what? That’s a perfect Daily Growth Hack because Doug you get asked this question all the time,” and they were totally right.

I’ve been asked this question four times today alone. The question goes something like this, “Doug, love what you’re doing, but I want it too. I want a lifestyle that actually works around me and my goals and my dreams.” Really what they’re saying is, “I want to develop a digital lifestyle where I can travel where I want to go, still run my business, still affect people in a positive way, but I don’t know how to do it. I feel like I’m chained to my current business or to whatever I’m doing currently.” Whether you be a business owner or an employee, that doesn’t really matter. These people all happen to be business owners and that’s really my circle of influence.

Now, so what really was asking is this is an old client of mine and he said, “Jeez, what can I do now? What is the fast track? What’s the fast track? Should I get a job with somebody that’s digital and sell my business? Should I just go … is there a class I can take? No MBA really covers this. How do I do this Doug? What’s the next step?” Now he was a young business owner and so what I told him is the same thing I’m going to tell you, it’s the same thing I would tell you if you’ve been in business for 30 or 40 years.

Running a business digitally is no different than running a brick-and-mortar business. You must master the fundamentals of business. You must master all those skills first. What people don’t see … they don’t see that I started this journey 10 years ago by hiring my first virtual employee, which forced me to actually build the systems around my business and really learn and learn exactly what needed to be done, what communications styles, what software to use, how I could run this in a digital manner.

You see, back then I owned three businesses, one of them being a brick-and-mortar business that actually required me to be at that physical location for the most of the time. Business 2007, I remember exactly where I was, sitting, writing in my journal, and realizing that I was not living the life of my dreams. I was not being the author of my own story. I’m going to share with you exactly what I told this individual this morning.

What I told him was, “Look, digital lifestyle’s great. You want to make sure though that your business works around your lifestyle and not doing the opposite, of what the 99% of the rest of people do is they work their lifestyle around their business. Always hoping to have a vacation, always waiting to live life when they’re done with work.” See, being a digital nomad means you’re almost always working. Although I was just down on the beach, I’m down here with one of my employees. Course we’re enjoying that, we’re having a great time, but at the same time, we’re also talking business strategy. While we’re doing that, I have it so I can pull out a mobile device and talk to the rest of my team. For me, it’s an iPhone and I’m able to chat with them on Slack or HipChat or some other system. We use Voxer, we have different protocols for each of our systems. This is what works for me.

One of the reasons I record these Daily Growth Hacks isn’t just to hear myself speak, really what I’m doing is I’m actually decided to do this so I could speak to Doug 10 years ago. The idea was, “What if I could talk to myself 10 years ago and help him leapfrog all the things that I’ve done? The courses, the classes, the mistakes, all the experiences that brought me here today, that allow me to live a lifestyle that I’m truly grateful for, and one that actually garners all these questions about how do I live this life.”

This is also exactly why we created the Author of Your Own Story University, launching September 1st. We wanted a structured program because there’s no place for me to direct people. Every time I get asked this, I don’t have a place to send somebody. I can’t tell you where to go, what class you can take. It’s a multitude. I’ve read thousands of books, I’ve taken courses, I’ve spent well over half a million dollars on this program. What I want to do is share that all with everybody else. This is just like the overnight success. You know there’s no such thing as an overnight success, yet each of us is still trying to achieve that. An overnight success is really someone that’s put in the hard work and their success is overnight only because you’re now seeing the shining star.

This is exactly what I told this young business owner. I said, “Look, yeah I can recommend books. Yeah, there are some online courses I can recommend for you as well, but there’s not a structured program that exists today, that I’m aware of, that allows you the opportunity to develop a digital lifestyle or a life on your own terms. That really allows you to be the true author of your own story. You see because the digital lifestyle isn’t just about business. You also need to balance your relationships, your fitness, your soul, and also, of course, your business and your mind.”

This is where we came up with the Five to Thrive. This is a holistic aspect because I’ll tell you, when I first started the digital lifestyle, I was missing a lot of the legs to this table. I had the business, but I was missing some of the relationship issues. I was missing some of the things with wellness. There are all kinds of things following us, I was juggling all these plates because now you have ultimate freedom in the schedule, but less structure, and so what do you do with that? How does your time because efficient? But then it’s easy to work all the time because you don’t have any hours.

These are things that people often don’t think of when they think of the dream of the business lifestyle or of the digital lifestyle. These are things I want to share with you because you can have it. You can have it all and you should and you deserve it. Go out today … what I want you to do is grab your journal, write out the reasons why you want the digital lifestyle and maybe this doesn’t apply to you. If it doesn’t, don’t worry about it, but I do get asked this question at least two times a day if not more. Every day on social media, in person, people just want to know, “How do I do it?”

There’s no secret. It’s structured educational learning and again, this is exactly why we’re opening the Author of Your Own Story University because to our knowledge, we can’t find it anywhere else to direct somebody. This is a limited group of people we’re taking through structured educational forms. It’s not about a digital lifestyle, it’s about a holistic balance where I pick one topic every month, a generalized topic, and we deep, deep dive into it. We deep dive into it in such a way that we’re creating meaningful conversations, discussions, and grow out of that topic. As we roll into the next month, it’s another topic that builds upon that layer by layer, to allow you to leap frog my 10 plus years of experience doing this, as well as, our team.

You need to remember that my team is also living the digital lifestyle and they’re also growth motivated. These are the kind of people I surround myself with and this is why I’ve become the author of my own story. I’m really passionate about this and I hope this is coming through because I get asked this so much and I want you to have it all. I want you to live the life of your dreams and if it encourages or includes this, I want to help you get there.

Begin With The End In Mind

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5585474/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Beginning with the end in mind is something I learned from Stephen Covey from his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Now, this is an older book, but its application is still very valid today. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend picking it up. Today my wife and I are traveling. We’re in beautiful Santa Barbara and I’m sitting overlooking the ocean and when I was talking to a client of mine I was talking to him about his goals and his dreams. We started to go through this exercise, which I’m about to share with you.

I call it to begin with the end in mind. What I want you to do is pull out your journal. If you’re sitting at home or you’re sitting at a desk, grab a journal, maybe even just a scratch piece of paper. If you’re driving right now or listening to this while you’re working out, that’s great too but remember to come back to this exercise because it’s truly life changing. Now, beginning with the end in mind, it starts off a little bit morbid.

What I want to imagine is what if you wrote your eulogy. You are able to actually stand above and listen to the crowd at your funeral. What are people saying? Now what I want you to do more specifically is pick out three people particularly. Now I want you to pick up someone from a romantic relationship. Now, this could be your current spouse or partner and if you’re not currently in a relationship, then I want you to pick your most recent relationship you were in, somebody previous to you.

I also want you to pick a coworker. Maybe if you own your own business that’s just an employee and the third person I want you to pick is a family member. Now what I want you to write out is exactly what you think each of those people is going to say about you. What are these people going to say at your eulogy? Now each person’s going to stand up and they’re going to speak about you. Now, what are they going to say?

Are they going to say, “Geez, Doug was such a hard worker? He worked 50 hours to 70 hours a week working on his business. Wow, we were so proud of him.” Or are they going to say, “Well, Doug was such an amazing friend? He was there every time I needed him. Whenever I needed advice or someone to even help me move or whatever it was, Doug was always there to lend a helping hand and an open heart.” Now, which one would you rather be?

What I want you to do is really write down these eulogies. What are these people going to say, and let’s compact this? Let’s use the power of compacted time. Let’s imagine this is happening three years from today. Three years from today what are these people saying about you? Also, what is the newspaper saying about you? When your obituary is written, what is that obituary saying? What I want you to do is write out actually what people are going to say today.

What are they going to say today about you? I want you to read that. Does that align with your values, who you want to be and who you’re being and showing up on a daily basis in your life? If it’s not, now is the time to change. Not later, not tomorrow, but right now. Right in this moment, I want you to make a choice, a conscious decision that you can change your future to be the author of your own story.

What do you want these people to say? For me I want my wife to talk about how much of an amazing husband I am and how loving I was and how I always took time out for my family. I want her to really speak and pour out the love and the love that I’ve had in my heart. My family, I want that to be very similar. I want them to talk about how much of a great man I was, how much I gave back to society but was always there for my family. I was always there.

Now you hear stories about people who say, “Hey, this person’s so famous. This person’s this.” Really your family just wants you to be your family, right? They don’t care that I speak. They don’t care that I coach high-level people. They don’t care about that. My family just wants me to be a brother and a son. They want me to show up, be able to toss the football around with my nephew and be able to bring a salad to the meal. They don’t care about my accomplishments.

What really matters to them is my heart and how that’s opened up. My employees, I have employees all over the world. I’m very fortunate because they’re amazing people. When they stand up to speak at my eulogy, to stand up at my funeral, I hope that they talk about what a great, compassionate boss I was. The fact that I take time out each and every month to help them up-level their lives, regardless of whether it’s within our business, whatever they’re doing, I check in weekly to see how they’re doing as well as their families. That’s extremely important to me.

I am always there for feedback. Now they don’t always reach out to me, and that’s fine. I don’t try to push that envelop, but what I want to hear from them from my eulogy is I want them to talk about that I was a kind, respectful, but also someone that pushed them, that made them push their boundaries. Now there are things that I want to change in my eulogy and every time I do this exercise there are little tweaks that I make in my life. There’s little conscious shifts that I make and say, “Maybe I’m not going down that path quite the way that I want to.”

Three years from now when people stand up and speak, I hope they cheer and celebrate my life. I hope that there’s some mourning of course, but I hope it’s a celebration. How many times do you hear people say that? “Hey, at my funeral I want it to be a party?” But are they living their life in a way that aligns with that goal? Now oftentimes a lot of the people that I hear that say that “I want it to be a celebration and people partying,” these are all business owners who are workaholics.

Now granted, my clients are business owners, so I know this avatar very well because I used to be this guy. I know it better than they think. The problem is they work their tails off looking for significance and also respect, but yet they’re not spending time on the quality relationships they have. So when people stand up at their eulogy all they’re going to say is, “Yeah, that guy John, he worked his butt off. We never really saw him. In fact, I really don’t know anything about him.”

Maybe they’ll get 20 people showing up, but who wants that? People want to be able to stand up and say, “Hey, this is what you stood for, this is what you believed. These are your passions and these are your hearts.” I want you to write that down, write your eulogy three years from now. I hope it’s much longer than that, but let’s imagine it’s three years from now. What are these three individuals going to say about you?

If it doesn’t align with what you want, what you want right now in your life for your story to be, then I want you to make changes. What are those changes you can make in this moment? The decisions you make today that can change that alignment? That’s it for me. I’m going to get back to the beach right now, but I wanted to share this with you. Remember, go over to AuthorOfYourOwnStory.com. We’re opening up the doors again for our university.

Visualize Yourself Before Bed

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5569682/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I want to talk to you about something that’s really not a secret, but something that most people aren’t utilizing, or are at least under-utilizing, and that’s the power of visualization, and more important, the power of visualization right before you go to bed.

When you think about it, CEOs, athletes, people from all walks of life that have been successful have utilized visualization as a success tool. One way that they do this is, right before bed, they’re going to visualize themselves being successful at whatever endeavor they’re embarking on right before they go to sleep. Why is this important? Well, this is important because, when you go to sleep, your mind’s subconscious is going to process the last thing that you were thinking about. The last thing that was in your mind is something that you’re going to be thinking about while you’re sleeping.

For a lot of you, this is going to be an action movie. This is going to be a series on TV that you saw. Unfortunately, it’s going to be something that’s going to be violent. It’s going to be something that’s depressing. Look at most of the popular shows on TV right now are on Netflix. There are shows about rape, murder, crime.

Maybe the bad guy gets caught, but a lot of times, the bad guy is the alter ego hero that we’re watching. Think of shows like Breaking Bad or things along those lines. These are the last thoughts that go into your mind, and they’re often depressing. They depress you. They depress your central nervous system. They depress your thoughts and your feelings.

Now, one trick that almost every successful person … I say almost because I haven’t asked everybody, but every successful person that I’ve ever asked, they do a visualization technique before going to bed. You can even see people like UFC fighter Conor McGregor. He talks about this. You can check YouTube and find him on there. He talks about, “I visualize the win way before it happens, so by the time I’m actually even going to the weigh in or the press conference, I’m cocky because I know I’ve already won. I can see it in my opponent’s eyes. I’ve already mentally replayed the belt going on me or what have you,” him actually winning. Now, this could be you.

Maybe one of your goals is to start your own business, or maybe it’s to be a millionaire, or maybe it’s to have six-pack abs. Whatever it is, it’s up to you. What I want you to do is, right before you go to sleep, I want you to think about that. Visualize the success, not the journey, but the success. What is it like when you’re at that successful point? For example, I’ll use six-pack abs. I want you to look at that. I want you to picture yourself with six-pack abs.

Not only that, I want you to feel those abs, really mentally feel that ab. How do your clothes fit? What does it feel like when your clothes are brushing across your body and you have this lean, muscular body, depending on what your goal is? What are people saying? Are they looking at you but are looking at you differently? I bet they would. How do you feel? What’s the energy like? In order to get six-pack abs, you’re going to have to have a tremendous amount of energy, which is just going to snowball upon itself. How’s your self-confidence? What are people saying? If you have a significant other, how are they feeling? I’m going to guess pretty good.

What I want you to do is visualize this, but before that even happens, grab your journal right now. Write out your Five to Thrive, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business. I want you to come up with your goals in each of those five categories. Now, you’re going to look at each of those five categories and visualize yourself achieving each of those five at the same time, at the absolute same time. What’s happening? What does it look like when you’ve actually achieved it? What is the air like? Is it cold? Is it warm? Who’s around you? Are you listening to these Daily Growth Hacks in your ears? Here we are in our 60s, maybe it’s 100 by the time you’ve achieved it, or maybe it’s 71. I don’t know. Be as specific as possible. The more specific you are about your surroundings, and what it’s like, and what it feels like viscerally to actually achieve these goals, the more likely you are to achieve them and be pulled in that direction.

Again, here’s my tip for you today and what I’d like you to do, your action step. Remember, you’re listening to these. You’re taking the time to better yourself. Do the work. Do the steps necessary. It’s easy to put these ideas in your head and then just not do anything about it. This is your chance, where the rubber meets the road, the chance for you to do the work, and that’s what I want you to do. Grab your journal. Write our your Five to Thrive. Write what you want to achieve in each of those five areas, and be specific.

Now, each night before you go to bed, you’re going to visualize, the last thing you’re going to do. Visualize yourself, the success of achieving these things, achieving these goals, all five of them, and I want you to be specific. I want to know dates, times. I want to know what it feels like. Who’s with you? Where are you? Geez, get passionate about it before you go to sleep. Put a smile on your face. Go to sleep with positive energy.

I can guarantee you that, within 30 days, you’re going to notice a huge change in your amount of sleep, the way you wake up, the way you feel, and the way that you’re starting to really be pulled towards these goals. Things are going to come towards you. It’s going to seem serendipitous. It’s going to seem like it’s on a chance that, all of a sudden, these goals start happening and things start aligning, but I’m here to tell you it’s not by chance. You’re subconsciously aligning yourself to be pulled in that direction.

Expand Your Network Before You Need It

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5569570/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Oftentimes I’ll wake up in the morning, and I’ll look at my emails after I’ve done my hour of power, and in those emails, I have lots of emails from subscribers of The Author of Your Own Story email. In there they’re telling me about their journey. They’re telling me about their struggles. They’ll also reach out to me on social media, and I absolutely love it, so thank you, but one thing I’ve noticed is about 90% of them are having issues where they’re currently unhappy in their current position. They’re feeling unsatisfied with their work, or they’ve been let go, and now they’re rapidly needing to expand their network.

They’re actually needing to tap into a network they don’t have, and the problem is, they’re unhappy now in their life. This is the one life we have to live, yet they haven’t done any of the work ahead of time to allow themselves to pivot when they need to.

What I want to talk to you today is about expanding your network before you need it. Now, how can you do this, and what do I mean? Well, what I mean is adding those like minded people to your network. Those people who will be there for you when the times get hard or be there for you when you’re ready to make that pivot. As the Author of Your Own Story, you should be working every day to actually build your life of your dreams. Oftentimes, for many of you, what that means is, what you want to do, are you want to create that image of what you want.

Maybe that’s leaving a current job, or changing what you’re doing inside of your job, and changing your own paradigm, and some of that has to be with surrounding yourself with the right people, or at least getting to know, and be able to contact with the right people.

Now, my ideas, or at my philosophy with building a network is, how can I add value to others? How can I add value to people’s lives, so I can make them better, so I can help them, so I can serve them, and when the time comes, if it ever comes, that I need a little help, I’ll tell you what, most people when I ask them for something, they’re more than willing to do it in return, because I’ve already filled that emotional bank.

So, think of your relationships like a piggy bank. You have this piggy bank, and every day you’re putting deposits in, all the time, and so you’re putting your deposits in, that bank is filling up. So, when you want to make a withdrawal, when you want to ask for help, when you want to pivot, when you want to change, when you want to do something else, you can actually withdrawal from that piggy bank.

All too often what happens is, people hit a rough spot in their lives, or they decide to make a change or a new program, or maybe they want to raise, or promotion and they want to come to their boss and say “Hey look, I have this skill set, let me use it.” Whatever it may be. Well, then they go to that piggy bank and try to withdrawal from that relationship, but the piggy bank is empty.

You see, they haven’t put deposits in on a regular basis. Now, this is something I’m going to encourage you to do. Look at your current network. Are the people that are in your network, this could be friends, family, coworkers, people you associate with on social media, Facebook, LinkedIn, where you’re connected with people. Are these people that you want to spend time with? Are they people that can help you elevate?

Now, if they are, I want you to add tremendous value. Add a lot of value. Don’t ask for anything first. Add tons of value. If they aren’t the right people, still add value but move on. Add some more people to your network. Add them and make those a relationship deposits.

Alright Doug, that’s great, but how do I do it? There are lots of ways. One, go over to The Author of Your Own Story Facebook group and request to join. Now, when you’re in there, what I want you to do is a post. Post once daily, if not, post at least once a week. Post about something that’s going on in your life. Respond to comments, be active in that community. This is social media.

What I’m asking for, if you’re listening to this, you will find your drive. You’re like minded individuals over in the Author of Your Own Story community, that’s step one. Step two, go over to LinkedIn, polish up your LinkedIn page, and look at people that are doing what you want to do, or look at people that might be able to give you a helping hand, and people you can help. Connect with them. Connect with them and ask “How can I serve you? How can I help you? What is something that I can do to make your life better.”

Obviously, you want to do this in your own tone. I have the way that I do it, and I’ve expanded my network on LinkedIn alone to over eight thousand professionals that I try to contribute to on a regular basis. Now, also, what’s something else you can do? Again, grab your journal. Write out your top 50 list. Now, if you’re not familiar with your top 50, go back to authorofyourownstory.com, go to the daily growth hacks, and look at our archive. We talk about what it is to create your top 50 list. This is critical because this top 50 list are the people you’re going to want to put the most deposits in. You’re going to put the most deposits in their relationship piggy bank. This is really important.

Now, you’ve got three steps right there. I’m going to leave it at that, although there’s more. Actually, I’m going to give you the fourth step. This fourth step is really important, because really what you want to do is build your tribe, build your community. So, get the people that are currently around you, the existing people that you love and care about, and get them on the same track as you.

One way you can do that is, right now grab your journal. If you’re driving, when you’re listening to this, or you’re working out, maybe grab your iPhone and put a voice note in, or put a little quick note, whatever it may be. Obviously, be safe about it, but I want you to pick three people you care about. Three people, you want to continue on your journey for the next five to ten years, and then what I want you to do is share this daily growth hack, and share the Author of Your Own Story daily growth hacks with them.

The reason you want to do this is that now they’re going to be on a similar path or a similar page as you. At least, if this is not their thing, they’ll understand where you’re coming from, and you’ll be adding value to them.

We have one subscriber that sent me an email and said “You know what Doug? I sent this to my family every single day, and now we have these conversations at dinner, and this has got my family closer. Now, not everybody agrees with everything you say Doug, but at the same time, we’re always talking about it. They know where I’m going, and what I’m thinking, and the conversations have grown.”, and that warms my heart. That’s why I do these daily growth hacks each and every day for you.

We’ve done over 60, and I’m very proud of them, and hopefully they’re going to get better, and better, and better, and you’ll enjoy them too, but right now what I want to challenge you to do is open your journal, make sure you have your top 50 list. Go over to the authorofyourownstory.com community, and make sure you subscribe and make sure you get in there and be active. It doesn’t help to be a player on the sidelines. If you’re on the bench or in the stands, you’re not on the court. We want you to be an MVP, this is your life.

Now, take the daily growth hacks and share them. Share them regularly. Three people’s what I’m asking you to do today. Commit right now, in this moment, to share it with three people every single day. You’re going to see your network, as well as the conversations, the depth of feeling you have in your relationships expand, I promise you.

Remember to Breathe

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5569127/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, today I want to talk about something that happened the other day as I was talking to a client of mine. I could actually feel it through the video conference they were getting tense. I stopped and I asked him, “Are you breathing?” All of a sudden, you just saw something clear up on them. You saw visually them actually lose about five to 10 pounds of weight. They took a deep breath and just exhaled and they just relaxed their bodies.

What I was talking to them about was a trigger that happened at their work. See they’re a high-level business owner. They run a seven-figure business and they were being stressed out about some of their employees in situations that were going on in their enterprise. Now, when I was talking to about it I could see them getting more and more tense, but I also noticed that they were holding their breath.

This is extremely common. It’s extremely common for us to do it throughout the day. What you’ll notice is actually just by simply breathing or exhaling, in a sense, you actually reduce the stress instantly. It’s an easy and quick fix. And besides losing 5 to 10 pounds in your appearance isn’t a bad thing for most of us.

So what he did is I had him just take him through this exercise; take a second, breathe. Are you breathing? Check in with yourself. And then exhale.

The reason I bring this up is I see this throughout my day as well. Often times running several businesses, coaching clients, raising a son, a family, I’m often times in stressful situations. Even knowing what I know, I find myself getting tense. I get very tense and next thing I know I’m like, “Oh, I’m stressed out,” and I go, “Oh, I was holding my breath.” I was taking shallow breaths.

You see what happens is part of our stress response, as we get stressed our body doesn’t perceive outside stressors, so things that could kill us like a bear, for example, versus internal stressors, so those things that are the environment that we create or take on ourselves. When we do that we hold our breath. We hold our breath in that fight or flight response, and that actually creates more stress. It actually even creates inner- abdominal pressure at times and the inner-abdominal pressure raises our blood pressure and raising our blood pressure a lot of physiological responses happen, which releases chemicals, which also affect your mood and our minds.

Just by simply taking deep breaths, conscious breathing throughout the day, you’ll find that your days become more and more stress- less. Now, that’s not really a word but less stressful is what I’m trying to say. Something you can do is set an alarm. Go to your cellular device, whether it be an iPhone or an android, and set alarms throughout the day. Maybe it’s six or seven alarms throughout your workday. Or if you’re staying at home, maybe it’s six or seven alarms spread out throughout the day. Whatever it is for you, have something relaxing.

Someone told me today, “Listen to Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley, that’ll chill you out every time. So maybe that’s the song you put on for your alarm. It’s completely up to you. But the idea is when you hear that alarm I want you to check in yourself. Check with inside yourself and ask yourself, “Am I breathing fully? Am I taking full diaphragmic breaths? Am I relaxing?” Then if you’re not, do it. And if you are, celebrate it. Either way, don’t beat yourself up. Take that time to actually breathe.

I’m going to ask you, as authors of your own story, take it a step further. This is your own story so I want you to check in with yourself when you’re feeling tense when you’re feeling stressful when you’re feeling anxiety. I want you to just take a second and go, “Am I breathing.” Then take four to five deep breaths in through the nose, relaxed, out through the mouth. I want you to notice if your stress levels diminish if your anxiety diminishes.

I want you to journal about it. Take out your journal, write out what happens. What’s going on with your body, your mind, your spirit, your business? What’s going on in these situations with your relationships? I’d love for you see the power of just breathing.

This is a very simple tip, but like most simple tips it’s also very easy not to do. It’s easy to forget. Putting this into practice is just like anything else, you have to do it more and more often. Like learning a language; if you stop putting it into practice you simply forget.

That Was A Bad Idea

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5567384/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

So, in the circles I’ve run with – business gets talked about a lot. And oftentimes you’ll hear people talking in social settings about bad ideas, “Hey my cousin had an idea and it was a horrible idea.” “I’ve started a business and it was just a bad idea and that’s why it failed or “I have an idea for a business but I think it might be a bad idea so I’m not going to start it.”

These kinds of conversations come up often and I hear them a lot. What’s really interesting to me is I don’t think there’s a bad idea. I just don’t think there’s a bad business idea. Now, what Imean by that is I can take any business idea you can think of and I can show you someone who is making millions of dollars on that idea. Whether it’s digital, retail, brick and mortar, manufacturing, service-based, you name it. There is somebody out there doing that successfully. And maybe that idea hasn’t been thought of yet.

That is a possibility too. But, with every person I can show you that have been successful, I can show you thousands if not tens of thousands of people and examples of people who have had the exact same idea or a variation of it and have failed miserably. Now, why? Now, it;s not a lack of passion, obviously when new ideas and businesses start, passion is in abundance. Passion is where it starts. Where they fail is they’re lacking the skills. The critical skills and the resourcefulness.

Now, in a previous daily growth hack, we talked about resourcefulness(https://www.authorofyourownstory.com/making-excuses-vs-resourceful/). Now, when we talk about resourcefulness we’re talking about the ability to utilize your resources. So, if you have an idea, you have the passion, now you make sure you have the skills and toolsets. This is where you go out and you hire mentors, you hire teachers, you take courses. Find somebody who’s already been along that path. Success leaves clues. Failures also leave clues. So as many times as you’re finding people who are successful, sometimes its also paramount to find people that haven’t been successful and find out why. Just ask them.

Often times you’ll ask them several times before you really get the true answer. Now, when you’re looking at your idea, and the reason I’m bringing this up as a daily growth hack is that this is an insight that so many people miss. It’s not your idea that’s wrong, it’s the way you are going about it. What I want you to do is leverage your resourcefulness. leverage your ability to get those tips, tricks, and insights. leverage mentors. You know, I’ve had coaches throughout my business career and I’m going over two decades of working with coaches and I’m always working with somebody else, up leveling them. I coach myself as well.

I also believe that if you are a coach, you should have a coach. You know, you gotta eat what you’re making. Eat your own cookin’ so to speak. When you’re looking at your business idea, and instantly people around you start saying “oh that’s not a good idea”, or “that’s a bad idea”, I want you to think about to yourself that it’s not the idea that’s bad it’s the execution and the resources, and making sure that it’s not only your mind is right but also that you have the tools and tactics to make this go to the finish line, and make sure it happens.

Have a great day and remember – be the Author of Your Own Story.
