Stop Living In The Land Of Comparison

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6185453/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, we’ve had this conversation before in these daily growth hacks but it keeps coming up in conversations that I have with business owners. Just this morning, I was talking to a client of mine who owns a business and hit his target goals, hit his target goals for the end of his 30 days. Now, with each of my clients, I set a 90-day game, 90-day goals around their businesses and their personal lives. Now, this particular individual hit his goals early. Now, by all stretches of the imagination or anybody’s standards, he should be elated. These goals aren’t easy to hit. We don’t set something that just anybody could do. These are big goals that are going to move the needle.

For him particularly, his goals allowed him more freedom in his life, more financial freedom. He was helping more people. It also allowed him to pay his staff more and give his staff kind of the life of their dreams, something that had been hanging on him for years at this point, and he hit it. It was a high-five type moment but you could see the weight on him. I finally said, “Jeez, what’s going on? Give yourself a pat on the back.” He looked at me and said, “Doug, I just, I don’t know if I’m doing enough. Am I? Am I doing enough here?”

I was like, “Wow. These are the goals we set and you hit them.” “Yeah. Is it enough?” “How does it feel for you? If it feels good, then, yeah, it’s enough. When we set the goals, these were the numbers. This was your dream numbers to hit, and you did it. Awesome job.” When we talked to him, he said, “Doug, I know the people that you’re working with. I know the other coaching clients that you have and they’re all playing at this top, top level. I just don’t feel like I’m there.”

That’s when I realized sharing the story sometimes that I share about other clients that I have and the successes that they’re doing rather than sharing the whole picture of what they’re going through and where they started from was actually causing him to feel worse about himself. You see, what he didn’t realize, when he was comparing himself to these people, he didn’t realize, one is you shouldn’t compare yourself, but, two, he didn’t know their struggles. He didn’t know that one person was struggling deeply in their relationships, while another actually was struggling in their business, and another on their health. He didn’t see that their journeys … He didn’t know that a couple of these clients have been with me for several years and moving on, will continue because they keep hitting their goals and they keep expanding.

He’s a new coaching client of mine and he knows who some of these people are and so what he felt was comparing himself was the way to do it and it felt like, “Hey, I’m not enough because I’m not playing at the level that these other people are playing at.” The truth is, is he had leapfrogged many of them when they started off at that level and he had done so much that he should be out celebrating. He should be celebrating the gifts that he’s giving, not only to himself and his family but to other families of clients that he has, as well as his staff. It was a moment of celebration, which was almost a moment of sadness and tears because he felt he wasn’t enough. He felt he wasn’t doing enough.

Now, haven’t we all been there? Haven’t we all been there in the areas of our five to thrive? Maybe not felt we were smart enough. Maybe we felt like in our body that we weren’t good looking enough. I mean, I remember back growing up by the beach my whole life in Southern California, this is me tan. All my friends in my yearbooks would write, “Have a great summer. Get a tan.” It stuck with me. I’ll tell you I’ve tried everything you can imagine. Being a Southern California kid, you would think that I never saw the sun. The truth is I would get burnt so easily that I would actually blister. I would do that much because I was always outside playing. I was always outside doing sports and activities but I was also on this quest as I got older. Hormones were kicking in that I always want to get tan. I just wasn’t enough.

In the area of our relationships, how many of us think that “Wow, I’m just not enough and so I need to hold onto this relationship because if they leave me, that’s my identity”? Gosh, I see that so many times. Powerful men and powerful women, strong but yet crumble at the idea of not being enough in the area of relationships. Not living up to your parents’ standards, not living up to the standards that others have set for you because you feel like you’re just not enough, not loving yourself. In the area of our soul, I mean, how many times I can’t tell you that I don’t meditate enough. I don’t do this enough and comparing myself to my friends and my circle of influence who happen to be people playing at a very high level and always said, “Wow, you meditate for two hours a day. Wow, I’m not doing enough here,” and feeling bad about myself and catching myself in that.

We all do it. In business, gosh, that’s the area I play in a lot especially with coaching. When I talk to my coaching clients and I’m doing that initial consultation and maybe you can resonate with this, they’re constantly comparing themselves to friends of theirs that own businesses and Frank has a seven-figure business and I have a six-figure and somebody else has got an eight-figure business. I can tell you what, I get to look under the hood of these businesses and I can tell you they don’t all run the way that you think they do. Some run very smoothly, some don’t. Perception is very different.

Why do we compare ourselves? We compare ourselves because we’re looking for acceptance. We’re looking for the norm, so we can be accepted and therefore, we can give our self self-love. The reality is that we need to stop comparing ourselves. Not only this coaching client of mine, this business owner who should be celebrating the victories that he has, I’m so proud of him for all that he’s accomplished, but also me, maybe even you. Maybe I can try that on.

What I’m going to encourage you to do right now, wherever you are, if you’re driving, that’s great. Wait till you get home and stop but if you are at a place where you can grab a pen and paper, I want you to write out your five to thrive. In those five areas, I want you to write out where are you comparing yourself to somebody else? Where are you comparing yourself to others? Maybe you’re like me and I found myself in this position where I compare myself to my future self, where I should be, using should too much. I’m comparing my standards rather than enjoying and celebrating the moment, enjoying where I am and enjoying the journey that takes me on there.

This will allow you to have more freedom, more freedom to help other people, more freedom to love yourself, more freedom to enjoy the moment and celebrate your own victories. Stop comparing yourself. Grab your journal. Write out your five to thrive. Where in your five to thrive anywhere are you in the land of comparison? Now, what I want you to do is scrap that because you don’t know the other person’s story and you don’t know their journey just like they don’t know yours. If we get rid of that, what freedom does that give you? I want you to take action right now.

That’s it for me today. Go over to authorofyourownstory.com. Get in the Author of Your Own Story University. Start now. What are you waiting for? Life is short. You have anything that we’ve seen around the world in terms of just natural disasters, let alone manmade catastrophes, and all the other things that come along with just this human condition. Life is short. We’ve had earthquakes, fires, floods, you name it, wars going on around the world. I actually know people who have been killed. I want you to start now. Whatever it is that your story’s about, your Author of Your Own Story Lifestyle, what does that mean to you? Start today.

Here’s what I want you to do. Simple. Grab your journal. Grab your Five to Thrive. What I want you to know, think about, is what if I met you five years from now? Right? What if I see you, we’re friends, right, and I run into you, and I see you at a party, and I say, “Hey, how’s it going? I haven’t seen you in five years. What have you been up to?” Your response is, “Things are great, Doug. Gosh, I can’t wait to tell you,” and then we fill in the gap. What happened to make things so great? Tell me what it is. Five years from now. What is your life like five years from now that makes it so great? Right?

Once you write that down, then what I want to know in your journal, but I want to know, how did you get there? What were the steps necessary, the big steps you did? Was it quitting a job? Was it actually growing within your job, starting a relationship, traveling more, getting your business online so you don’t have to be dependent on a local economy like I did? Right? What are those steps that you needed to take so five years from now, I’m fast-forwarding and I’m asking you this question, and you’re saying, “Doug, life is amazing. It’s the best it’s ever been. Is it everything I’ve ever dreamed of”? Write that down. That’s what I want you to live into. Life is short.

I get all these messages from many of you that watch the videos or listen to the podcast or in the group, and you’re always telling me about how you’re going to start, how this is going to be different. Well, here we are. January is almost over in 2018, and I want more for you. Right? I’m going to be that kind of uncle, so to speak, that’s going to give you that push and that gentle nudge and tell you, “Hey, look. Life is short. You deserve to have it all, and you deserve to have it all now.” Take time to do the work. Right now. Write it down. It is critical that you handwrite this down. You and I, we run into each other at that party, and it’s going to be fun. Right? When we run into each other, because your life is amazing, and I want to hear all about it, and I want you to write out what your life, why it’s so amazing. Get into detail. I want to know everything.

Your Five to Thrive. Remember, that’s a holistic representation of your life. Your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, your business. Why is it so frigging good? It’s amazing, so why is it amazing? Tell me about it. Tell me about it in your writing. Then what I want you to do it, just stop after you’re done with that, shake it out a little bit, and then think about, live into this, and then think about, “How did I get here? What’s my path?” Do you own a home? Do you own several homes? Do, beach homes? Have you traveled the world? Are you married? Do you have kids? What kind of car are you driving? Whatever it is, and I want you to take the first step above and beyond just the journaling and the planning, although to me it’s the most critical part, take that first next step this week. Today, in this moment, I want you to take it immediately and start living the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle.

I’m passionate about it because I’m passionate about you growing. I want you to have a taste of what I’ve been fortunate enough to have a taste for, and I want you to compress the time that it took me to be on this journey. I want you to have it, and I want you to have it all. That’s it for me today. As always, go out. Inspire other people by simply being yourself and being the author of your own story. I’ll see you tomorrow. Take care.

The Fear Of Starting Out

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6178004/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I know many of you that listen to the daily growth hacks know that I coach business owners. But I also know that many of you aren’t business owners yourselves, but are aspiring to your own thing. Your business, your own side hustle, your own company. And I know a lot of you believe that this is the answer to being on the path to the author of your own story.

But from talking to many of you and to get the messages. To get the direct messages on social media, the emails, as well as the text messages from a few of you that I’ve known for a very long time.

First, I want to thank you for trusting in me and sharing with me your experiences. It really fills my heart. Also, I realize that often times, many people don’t start their own business or their own side project or own side hustle because of the voices in their head. Either, they don’t where to start, right? And, let me know if any of these sound familiar to you because, I’ve certainly had them in my head in the past, too.

So, not knowing where to start. Not thinking that you are an authority on a particular subject or, an authority on social media. Maybe you don’t have all your ducks in a row quite yet. Maybe you don’t think you have enough time to do it. Maybe you don’t think you have enough money. Remember that old saying, it takes money to make money. Maybe you think that if you go out there, people are going to laugh at you. Or maybe, you think when you put something out into the marketplace, into the world, is it going to be good enough? Or maybe, you’re working on making it perfect. It’s just not quite perfect, yet.

Whatever it is, these are all excuses that hold us back. They’re excuses that hold us back from taking that first step. The first step on our journey.

Now, what I want you to do is look at this excuse. Write it down in your notebook. Grab your journal, write it down. Where are you? Do any of these excuses make sense to you, for not starting what you want to do? And maybe, it’s not a business. Maybe it’s something else. Maybe you’re looking at starting another exercise routine or some other passion you might have. Maybe it’s an adventure. A trip you want to go on. And, you have these voices going on in your head and, you just haven’t gotten started yet.

Now, I’m going to ask you a couple of questions. One, have you had this voice or this, excuse or this reason, going on for more than a couple of months? If you’ve answered, yes. Then you’re using that as an excuse to hold you back.

Now, maybe not all the time but, I’m going to say 90% of the time. I certainly know that I have done it in the past. And, I have to watch myself to make sure I don’t continually do that.

Now, if you’re using this reasoning, I want you to write down all those reasoning’s you haven’t started. I know a lot of people that say. “It’s just not the right time.” Or, “I don’t know how to start.” So, let me address a few of these.

If yours is, “I don’t know how to start.” Well, first of all, there’s lots of courses and resources that are available for you. In fact, I coach young entrepreneurs to get to that level. And if I’m not a good fit, I’m happy to find somebody else for you. I know a lot of great business coaches, courses, and resources that allow you to take that first step.

If you’re saying, “Hey, I just don’t have enough money. It takes money to make money, Doug.” Well, that’s not true either. You can bootstrap something and start with a little as $100. I started one of my companies without any resources or capital. Just, pure sweat equity and, I taught myself everything I knew, needed to know along the way. And, when I had money coming in. I reinvested it into the business through coaching. Getting coaches to help me shorten the gap. Bridge the gap between where I was to where I wanted to be.

Now you might be saying. “My product is not quite ready.” Well, that’s BS too. Maybe it’s not ready but, how do you know what the marketplace says? I can tell you from my experience, I built so many products that I thought were amazing. I’ve spent countless weekends, nights, weeks, just focusing on the building the most amazing products that I thought were possible. Only to find out that it wasn’t what the marketplace wanted.

Now, I have all my reasons for why they didn’t want it. But, at the end of the day, they didn’t. How did I come up with a most viable product? The quickest product to market, to get feedback from my customers. I would have saved so much time, frustration and headaches. Now, yes. I learned a lot from the process and those products have spun out into other products that I’ve been able to make money. Been able to help a lot of people with.

But, I don’t want you to use that as an excuse for yourself. Bring it to market. Bring it to market right away.

Maybe you don’t feel like your an authority. That’s also BS, right? You know more than somebody else on something. There’s something you do. You have a different life experience. For me, it’s the coaching experience that I have, as well as the business experience combined with all the personal development and travel and, deep dives I’ve done into my own self, to be able to help somebody else do it with themselves.

For you, it might be different. Maybe, you grew up and you can play the piano. You can play the ukulele. Maybe it’s … You just really know Spanish really well, you grew up in a Spanish speaking house. I don’t know what it is. But for you, it’s going to be different. You’re going to have a unique skill and, unique experiences based on your own lives.

So, what I want you to do is write down that story of the excuse that you have. Then, what I want you to do. Is take that and go say. “Hey. What are five reasons? Five facts, that if you look at that, that it’s not true?” You just know five things that aren’t true about this. I don’t have enough time. Well, can I just do this after work? Yes. Can I wake up early in the morning? Yes. Can I do it during my lunch break? Yes.

You know the truth around this. Now, you’re going to fight some of these truths but, let these truths come up with these facts. As if you were defending this new story that you do have time. So, you’re writing the opposite again, using that excuse or story that, I don’t have enough time. Write that down and say. “I have plenty of time.” And then, give five facts on why you have plenty of time. And go in it.

You are defending this. Like a lawyer on trial, going right after it. Cool.

So, the second thing I want you to do is to look at that and then, I want you to write those things in the affirmative, right? I have plenty of time because I can work on my side hustle during my lunch break. I have plenty of time because, I can wake up truthfully, a half an hour early. Or, I can skip this TV show I’m watching at night or, skip out of social media for a little bit. Whatever it may be.

Again, I’m using this one relationship to time for you, as an example. Now, you can do it for whatever it is for you. We all have our own excuses and our own reasons. And, I certainly have mine. And, I’m working them all the time with my coaches. The coaches that I hire.

So, that’s what I want you to do and look at this. And then, realize that this is really the reality for you. This is the truth. And so, look at this truth and make it your new reality and take that first step. Right here, right now if any of this resonates with you. If you feel like, I kinda, have that too, what Doug’s talking about. Then I want you to say. “What can I do right here, right in this moment. To actually take a step forward?”

Now, it could be journaling for you. It could just be this journal exercise, the first step. Then calendar something out. So, if it’s time for you. I want you to block out your lunches. I want you to block out when your watching, now that football is over, no more Monday night football. But, block out your news. “Hey, I watch the six o’clock news every night.” Well, block it out. You no longer watch the six o’clock news. Now you’re doing this.

Whatever it is for you, block it out on your calendar. Your calendar is going to show me your priorities. It’s also going to show you your priorities. And that allows you to get a step further.

Now again, this might not be your business or side hustle but maybe, this is learning a Latin dance. Maybe it’s learning a foreign language. Maybe it’s picking up a different skill. Maybe it’s meeting new people, going to meetups. I hear this all the time from business owners and entrepreneurs who are talking about the area of relationships and saying they don’t have enough contacts, enough friends. Especially, men. As men, we tend to really be Alphas sometimes, or we use that excuse anyway and we become solitary. And, I hear this from guys all the time that I work with is that they can’t find enough guys to hang out with or, guys that are the same way.

And, I get it, right? It’s hard for us. And, I’ll speak about guys and women, I know you guys want community, too. But, the truth is you’re not looking. The truth is unless you’re reaching out to people constantly. Unless you’re setting aside that time to put yourself out there. Then how do you expect it? You don’t expect a business to grow. You don’t expect a plant to grow unless you water it. Unless you spend time putting it in the sun so it can nurture. Same thing with your relationship. Same thing with your business. Same thing with every area of your life.

So, I want to help you limit these excuses. So, that’s the first step we’re going to go through. And there’s a lot more you can do and a deep dive with this. And, I’m passionate about this because I know this is going to skyrocket you to the author of your own story lifestyle. Whatever your story may be. I want that for you.

The Dirty Little Secret About Finding Your Passion

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6174548/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

So recently, I’ve been getting a lot of direct messages on Instagram from young hustlers, and that’s how they’re self-describing themselves. And often times there’s a theme. In these particular string of messages, and there’s three to be exact, they’re asking me, “Doug, you know, how do I go about finding my passion. I want to make the world a better place, I want to go out and make changes, and I really want to go after it. What’s the first step? What do you recommend?”

It’s interesting when I get asked this question of, “How do I find my passion?” And I think what people are envisioning is kind of almost like a monk or somebody sitting in a cave meditating for weeks on end. And I’ve done Vipassana Meditation, which is a 10-day silent meditation retreat, although it seems like 12, but anyway … And I’ve done these different things, I’ve gone to the jungles in Columbia, and been with the native tribes and done Yahweh. I’ve done all kinds of stuff. And I can tell you as something who’s found their passion that it doesn’t come from the meditation, and that’s not why I did it, really. I did it because that was my spiritual quest of just peeling back the layers of my own life.

And so, what I’m going to tell you is what I told them, and this is really for them as well, but it’s also for that 50, 60-year-old that has reached out to me asking about how do they find their passion in this next stage of their life. And the truth about it is, it doesn’t involve meditation, although I recommend it, and it can certainly help. Really what finding your passion is about is just doing the things you like, doing the things you enjoy. And as you’re doing the things that you really love and enjoy, your passion kind of finds you. And how that works, I know it sounds weird, but as you’re doing the things that you really love to do, you’re doing those little things that you enjoy so much, you get filled up with energy, and it becomes infectious, right?

I love coaching, I love helping people, I love teaching. It’s just what I love to do. I also love to learn. So, I learn something, and then I take whatever that new knowledge is, and I scramble it up, and I repackage it in a way that people can understand it. It’s palpable. That’s what my goal is, it’s just something that I’ve always been good at. And so the more I do it, the more energy I get. Right?

So, I go into a coaching call, and maybe an hour, an hour and a half, it could get really emotional. Things could come up for the business owner that I’m working with via video, and by the end of that coaching call, I have more energy than even when I started. And the reason is, is that it’s something that I love to do. And so, that’s my passion, and I found to because, out of just constantly doing what I like to do, and I love to help people.

And so, for other people finding their passion, what do you like to do? Do you like to be around people? Do you really prefer to do things yourself? And start narrowing that down. And start putting yourself in a position where you’re doing more of the things that you love and enjoy, and are doing less of the things that you don’t. Now, I know it sounds simple, but I bet if you look at your calendar, and you say, “Hew, Doug, here’s my calendar from last week,” and we went down that calendar, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, et cetera., my guess is you’re spending a lot more time — if you’re like most people I work with, and the way I used to be — you’re spending a lot more time in the zone, or in the areas of doing things that you don’t like to do, things that don’t fill you up.

Now, I’m not saying, that you just go out and just do things that make you happy and ignore the rest of your responsibilities, I’m not saying that at all, so don’t use me as your excuse, but what I me saying is plan your weeks ahead, your days, your times, and allow yourself to fill that up. Now, if you’re a business owner, and we have a ton of business owner and entrepreneurs that watch or listen to these daily growth hacks, this means focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses.

For decades, it seems like, I was so focused on bettering those areas I wasn’t really good at. So I would take areas that I wasn’t strong in, I’m not a very detailed-oriented person, per se, so I would spend so much time going through David Allen’s book on organization, and I hired professional organizers. In fact, I had a girlfriend hire one for me to come into my office and help me clean up, and get things, my organized chaos. But that’s not me. Right?

Every time I would go through and start organizing files, and stuff like that, it would be like drudgery. But when I would get in my Zone of Genius. When I get in front of somebody and share my gifts, share my knowledge, and just try to help them, whether I was making money, or not making money, I was just on fire. I was filled up, and I absolutely loved it. And the more I focused on getting better at that, getting better at that skill set, so coaching.

So for me, it was learning neurolinguistics programming. How can I communicate to someone that allows it to land on them and make sense to them by using analogies, and things of that nature. I started focusing on my strengths and making them stronger. That’s when I had skyrocketed growth. And that’s also when I was able to go on that path that I call the Author of Your Own Story journey. Right? Because I started writing things my way. People would tell me, “Oh, well you really should be doing this, Doug. This, this, this, this, and this.” And what they were really saying is that was what they saw in them. Like the strengths in them are the things that I should be working on because maybe they weren’t strengths.

And we all have weaknesses and strengths. You can call them whatever you want. I know some people don’t like that language, but whatever. I do. And so, what you want to do is find your strengths. Find what fills you up. If you love kayaking, like kayaking is your thing, or being outdoors, get outdoors more often. That’s going to fill you up. It’s going to fill your cup. And we’ve talked a lot about filling your cup first in our daily growth hacks. Like at them, look at the past episodes, and go back there and do the work, and make sure you’re finding those zones that fill your cup.

Now, if you’re just out of college, maybe, and you’re a young hustler like these people are, find out what you’re great at. What are those things that you do naturally? Your friends like it, and you just naturally do it? Are you the person always giving advice? Are you the person that loves to organize? If you’re the person that loves to organize, and you’re the detail-oriented person, and you love checklists, I need you. Right? I need you because that’s not me. Focus on getting better at that. Focus on systems that work for people like myself.

If you’re the person that really loves big parties, you love events. You need to get off work, and you need to get out there, whether it be happy hour, whether it be a social event, whatever, that fills you up when you’re tired. You need to get out around a lot of people, do more of that. That is going to allow you to find your passion. Your passion is going to find you, right? It’s going to find you as you do the things that fill you up.

That’s the dirty little secret, right? You know, not many people talk about it, because it’s hard to sell a book on that subject. But I’ve seen it time, and time, and time again, guys. I get paid a good amount of money to help people find their passion, and really that’s exactly what I would tell them. Maybe a little bit more structured, but you want to really just spend more time in your Zone of Genius. And finding your Zone of Genius really starts with doing the things that you like to do. Doing those things that fill you up. And when you do those things that fill you up, you’re going to be great at them, people are going to recognize it, and they’re going to recognize that it’s probably something that they need help in.

So, again, that organized person, if you’re that organized person, and that’s what you really enjoy doing, if you’re doing more of that, I’m going to find you, or you’re going to find me, and I might need what you do, and that’s how you start building that passion, and finding out what your purpose is, and then allowing your purpose to fill your bank account, and your soul, at the same time. And there’s nothing wrong with doing what you love and getting paid for it. There’s nothing wrong with that at all, as long as you’re doing it with integrity, and leading from your heart, and really helping people out.

That’s it for me today. As always, go out, find your passion, do what you love, fill your cup, and be the Author of Your Own Story. The 2 A.M. Wake Up Call

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6171312/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

This morning I popped out of bed, or at least wide-awake in bed around two in the morning. Now, this is typical because we have an eight month year old child, and he wakes up in the middle of the night and wants to be fed. That’s understandable, but this one was a little bit different. It was a little bit different because my child hadn’t actually woken me up. When I woke up, I was just wide awake. Now granted, my wife and I go to bed really early now to counter this interrupted sleep patterns that we have now. But, I sat there for a while and laid in bed and tried to go back to sleep, as I typically would, but this time I could just tell it was a little bit different.

So I got up out of bed and put my clothes on that I set out, my workout clothes, the night before, which I hope you’re doing as well for your workout days. I went downstairs. I went downstairs with the intention of just getting a few things done around the house, making sure not to turn on too many lights, so I would fall right back asleep. In fact, I planned on falling asleep on the couch so I wouldn’t wake my wife up. But convention would have it that I would lay in bed. In the past, I would, and toss and turn and move my pillow around, and really kind of fight it. I would be up, pretty much, laying in bed tossing and turning till 5:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m., or whenever I decided to actually get up and go about my day.

Now this happened to be a Saturday morning, so usually, I sleep in a little bit on Saturday and get up around five anyway, but I sleep in a little bit more. But this time, what I did is I got up and I did a few things around the house, just got things done in my home office here. I found myself getting more and more energized. You know, I looked at my email briefly, just because it was on one of my monitors, and I saw that I had three requests for coaching consultations for private coaching. One of the requests was for a referral. I always get really excited when someone trusts in me to want to help take them on their journey. So when I was looking at that, and also when I can help somebody by directing them in another direction to another coach or professional or mentor, that really lights me up.

Well fast forward, it was getting 3:00, 3:30 in the morning. It was clear and evident by this point that I wasn’t going back to sleep. So I threw on a pot of coffee, had a cup and just enjoyed my morning. My family got up around 6:30 in the morning. They came downstairs, and I had done the laundry. I had done a lot of work in my office on my businesses. I was able to have a really productive, fun-filled morning doing my morning routine.

Now, the reason I’m telling you this isn’t to be braggadocios or to you make you feel bad for me that I’d been up for so long, but really was just the idea of really changing my standards and changing the lens, and listening to the inside, listening to me and what was different. See, that 2:30 wake-up call wasn’t what I wanted to do. In fact, it sucked. I didn’t want to do it at all. I wanted to sleep and be rested and energized. But I was energized. Instead of going with the conventional thought that I needed to have those eight hours of sleep, really I was rested and ready to go.

Today, if you look at today, all the things that I got done. I had an extremely productive full work day that I actually enjoyed. I got to read a book. So I gotta do all this before the average person gets up on a Saturday morning. Back in my early 20s, I would’ve been out to 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, not just simply waking up at this time. I was able to go on an amazing adventure with my family. Early in the morning, we went on a hike through a river. It was just unbelievable.

So I ask you this question. Where in your Five to Thrive are you just going with the conventional feel of what you think you should be doing, rather than listening to your inner self, rather than listening to what’s going on inside you? Is this in your mind? Are you studying something or reading something because a leader, a thought leader … I suggested it, or somebody else might have recommended. Is there a book? This happens often when I talk to people about what books they’re reading. I expect them to come out with such passion about what they’re reading, and oftentimes it just sounds so drab, and they’re like, “Ah, this book kind of sucks, Doug, and I don’t really know.” Well put it down! We all have the same 24 hours in a day. Put it down. Get another book that lights you up.

Or is it in your body? Are you doing a specific workout or are you eating certain foods or following a diet because you should, but really inside, you know what you need to do? Maybe you just need to stretch more, right? Men, especially us men in the office, this is a common one. We think we still need to go lift the heavyweights. That’s great, and I love lifting heavy, but maybe it’s yoga. Feel loose. I can tell you based on my experience when I loosened up my body … And I didn’t even realize how tight I was, that I actually had more joy and more abundance, more energy. I could take that to the weight room, as well.

Is this is in your area of your soul? Are you feeling like you should meditate because everybody says, “Hey, meditation’s great.” Maybe it’s not for you. You know? That’s okay. Maybe it’s your religious practice. Maybe you grew up a specific religion and it’s just not really resonating with you, but you think you should practice it. I would highly recommend checking into that. Maybe it’s in an area of your relationships. Maybe you think you should be dating somebody. Maybe you think you should be doing something specific. Maybe you think you should be straight or gay or whatever it is, but it doesn’t feel right inside of you.

Too many people do I know that have not felt right about their sexuality until they actually explored, and they explored it deeply and actually found true love and passion. I want that for you. You deserve it. You have one of these lives to go through. We know that for sure. You have one shot, so make it the best.

Maybe it’s in your business. I coach business owners to personalize and help them with their business. So oftentimes, I see this area as a whole list of “shoulds”. I should be doing these things, I should be advertising on Facebook, because that’s what everybody is talking about. Well, they’re talking about it probably because it’s easy for them to talk about. Advertising and marketing contains a whole broad spectrum. It should be done in a full stack approach. Or maybe your KPIs, your Key Performance Indicators, in your business just aren’t the right ones and you’re following a guru or somebody else, and just misunderstanding the sound bites they were trying to give you. Or maybe in your business, you’re actually going after the wrong product or service.

Maybe you don’t own a business and you work for somebody, and it’s just not lighting you up. You know deep down inside you need a change. Well today is that time. Today is that time for all of your Five to Thrive to be following where your heart is guiding you. You see, we have gut feelings. We feel it in our heart, we make all these analogies for these bodily expressions. How often are we actually listening to them and following them.

So what I’m going to invite you to do today is grab your journal. Write out your Five to Thrive, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business. What I want you to do is take a gut check. Where should you be doing … Not should. Where would you want to go in those areas? Are there certain dogmas or other practices that you think you should be doing, but doesn’t feel right to you.

Again, I’m relating this back to laying in bed, and gosh, I’ve had sleep issues in the past and I’ve read everything you could think of to get quality sleep. I’ve talked to experts, and I’m supposed to be in bed. They say, “Just stay in bed. Keep your eyes closed.” It doesn’t always work for me. You know, when I get up and I actually go about my day, and I attack my day with the vigor and the passion that I have, I just feel more rewarded and energized. I can take a nap. It’s not a big deal for me. I have the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle, so my schedule allows me to be extremely flexible, especially on the weekends.

So where is it for you? I invite you to explore that the way I explored it this morning. It’s really filled me up. It’s really filled me up and opened me up, and just kind of another bread crumb on the road to reassure me that listening to myself, listening to both my heart, my gut, and just kind of the way I’m feeling is the right way to go. Especially on this path that I call the Author of Your Own Story. You get to write this story each and every day. You get to write the kind of person you want to be, the mother, the father, the husband, the wife, the business owner. What do you want to be? Today you can make that change.

If you’ve always been a dick, you can change it today. Obviously, you’re probably not if you’re listening to this, but if there’s something in your life that you’ve always wanted to make a shift … You don’t want to be the shy one anymore. You want to be the person that steps into the light. Well, I give you that permission right here, right now. Today is your time.

That’s it for me today. Go over to AuthorOfYourOwnStory.com, get the latest tips, tricks and techniques delivered right to your email inbox each and every day. Share this with at least three people, a minimum of three. Can you think of three people right now? Your office, three business owners that you know? Yes you can. Share it with them. They deserve it. They deserve the opportunity to get new tips and insights.

This might trigger something totally different than what I’m talking about. It might trigger a response that will allow them to step into their own light, into their passion, and hopefully help you do to you, too. Then of course, as always, what I want you to do is go out, inspire someone by being yourself, going after your dreams, chasing them and grabbing them by the tail, and pulling them in each and every day, by being the Author of Your Own Story. I will see you tomorrow.

Be True To Yourself

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6166434/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

This morning I was talking to a young entrepreneur and the conversation was about the grind. About hustle and how there has to be some sort of hustle within a business. Now I had to stop him because what I wanted to ask him was are you getting everything you want out of life? And there was a long pause in there, as there often is when that question is asked. The answer was simply no, no they weren’t. They were trying to achieve their goals and dreams through the vehicle of their business, right? And it was a young business, a business just being started and they’re spending all of their time doing it.

Now there’s a season for this, right? There’s a season for putting in the work and I’m all for that. In fact, I do it often. But you have to honor the other areas of your life. You see, if you sacrifice your relationships or sacrifice your body, you’re gonna pay double the price later on, if not even more. In my experience, business owners often find themselves embracing the grind simply as an excuse for telling themselves that they’re moving forward. And the truth is they’re really not. Because why did they start the business?

So for this particular entrepreneur, when I was talking to them about their situation, they had actually shunted all of their relationships to focus on this business. Now it’s been two years since the launch and they haven’t achieved the goals that they set forth for the business. Now they claim they were working 12-15 hours days almost six to seven times a week. Now that’s a lot of time to be put into anything. And the season isn’t that long, right?

So what you’ve got to ask yourself as an entrepreneur, as a business owner is what are you sacrificing up for? Are you sacrificing all these areas of your life, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships? Four of the five to thrive in order just to get one. Now, sure, if you have a product launch, your business is growing, there are certain times, again, seasons, seasonalities in a business. There’s also ages of a business. Businesses go through life cycles, right? And they go in different directions in that life cycle. They can regress and progress. And I totally get that and I honor you for where you’re being.

But I don’t want you to lie to yourself and I don’t want you to sacrifice like this person was doing for two years under the false pretense that they were moving forward. You see, they were telling themselves what I’ve told myself in the past and maybe you have too, I don’t know. But as a business owner, sometimes we jump in and we want to feel that we’re progressing. We want to feel we’re moving forward so we just work. And we go through our to-do list, we go through our tasks, we stay late nights, we work on Friday nights, the weekends. We celebrate it by talking about how much we’re working. We brag.

Yet we’re not getting anywhere. We have this feeling inside of us and we know this, if we’re being honest with ourselves, that we’re just spinning the wheels. I know I did this for years as a young entrepreneur in my 20s. I finally figured out a way out and along that journey is when I developed the five to thrive. Right? The five areas of life, the containers which I had to have filled in order to live an extraordinary life.

I looked around and there weren’t many people doing this and I didn’t really understand why. And it took a while for me to break the mold in this area and that’s where we came up with the Author of Your Own Story concept. And I addressed this to this young man. Now he wasn’t asking me for life advice and he wasn’t asking me to tell him about his health. What he wanted was a specific key tactic to move him forward in his business.

And so what I told him, the advice that I gave him is don’t use tactics. Tactics work when they’re applied to the right seasonality, right? You can nail in, you can actually nail a nail if you use a hammer. But if you have a saw, that’s not really gonna help you. A saw is a tactic but a tactic used for something else, for cutting something down, for sawing something in half. The tactic needs to fit the right criteria.

So for this particular business person, and again I can relate to it because I’ve been there and that’s why it’s so easy for me to be a coach for people because I run businesses, I’ve made all the mistakes, you know, if not once, twice, sometimes three times. I’m a slow learner, what can I say? But you feel like you’re spinning the wheels and really you’re just checking off a task list, right?

Your tasks never stop, they keep filling up. You could have a page of tasks, spend all week focused on eliminating those tasks and as soon as you’re done, you turn no more than turn around and that task list is filled. If not by you, by somebody else. They’re taking over authorship of your life. Authorship of your story. You’re just spinning your wheels at that point, right? It feels horrible. Imagine where you would be if you were in the same place two years from now.

This is why I’m such a fan of becoming the author of your own story and breaking the mold. First, you’ve got to write your story, right? You’ve got to be real honest and raw with yourself. Second, compress time, right? Get mentors, get coaches, read books. Find people who’ve been there, done that, who’ve been along the path. Use their experiences, hire the best. Hire the best of the best, whatever you can do. You’ll get more out of that. You’ll have more skin in the game and it’ll make you move forward or allow you at least to move forward, I should say.

So in this idea, make sure your priorities are also in order and you are always filling your five to thrive. When you have your five to thrive filled, you are going to see a more holistic approach to life. You’re going to have more energy for your business, you’re going to have more time in your business. It’s going to be focus time because you’re going to be filled up in your areas, in your relationships, your health is going to be on point, your mind, you’re going to have clarity. Because you’re doing work for your soul that fills you up, whatever that means to you, you’re going to have more to bring to the table.

And that’s what I want for you. I want you to break the mold, unplug from the Matrix if that’s what you want to call it. For me, it’s just really about being the author of your own story. You can write it down or not. It’s the whole idea of taking control of your life and living life on your own terms and not sacrificing so much to get where you want to go.

So what I’m going to recommend you do right now, is grab your five to thrive and write out those areas. Where are you sacrificing? What areas are you actually limiting yourself and are you lying to yourself? You know, it’s hard. Am I lying to myself or am I lying now? I get that, it’s kind of a contradiction. But just be raw with yourself and be really honest, what am I really doing? Am I sacrificing my mornings? Am I sacrificing my health or playing sports?

I know for me when I was building my second business, I was sacrificing going out and playing sports competitively for a while, or at least not as much as I wanted to. I was sacrificing Friday nights, not going out. I was single, I was in my early 20s, not going downtown. I was sacrificing friendships. I wasn’t connecting with my old friends. And it took me a long time to build this up once I figured this out. And I don’t want that for you. I want you to use me as your voice, just my experiences, and compress the time by learning from my past mistakes. That’s what a good coach and mentor should be able to do for you.

So write out your five to thrive. Write in your journal where you can progress and where are you sacrificing and where are you lying to yourself and just be really raw and relevant to yourself. And then go out and make a change. Right now, I encourage you within this moment, if anything I said rings partially true to you and it kind of says, yeah it kind of sounds right, I am spinning my wheels. Or I am just knocking off tasks and I’m not moving forward or progressing the way I wanted to, take action now. Now is the moment. Five, four, three, two, one, go.

This is your time to be the author of your own story. Every day you get to rewrite it and every moment you get to rewrite it by the choices that you make. I’d love to hear back to you. Go to the author of your own story group or reach out to me personally, I’d be happy to have a chat with you in any way that I can help you. That’s it for me today, I’ll see you tomorrow. It’s A Reflection Of You

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6162548/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Several months ago, in fact actually a year ago, I set out to keep a gratitude journal with the idea that after 90 consecutive days of writing down what I was grateful for in my wife, I would hand it to her. Now, the idea behind this journal is each and every morning I would wake up, grab my journal as well as this other journal, and I would write into the separate journal what I was grateful for. Not just the fact that I told my wife … I tell my wife every single day, but I would write it down. After 90 days, she’d have 90 pages, almost like a book that I could hand to her as a present, as a surprise.

Now I’ve started this process three separate times. Meaning I have never finished it. I’ve started it, gotten to certain points and for one reason or another or whatever excuse, I just haven’t finished the actual 90-day journal. Each time I start from scratch because I just don’t think it’s fair.

Just to be fully transparent before everybody thinks I’m a total jerk, I have the greatest wife ever. I tell her I’m grateful for the things that she does not only for me but for our family and just the reasons I love her on a daily basis. That I do consistently. But for this gratitude journal, I just haven’t finished. Some might think this is a reflection on the way that I care for my wife. They might say, “Doug, if you really loved her, if you really cared and really were grateful, you would make the time to do this. If you really cared, you would set aside the time and put anything else.” That’s completely not true. It’s not.

It’s not a reflection on my love or a reflection on my gratitude for the reason that I have not finished. It’s a purely a reflection on me. Me as a man and me as a person and an individual, and me as somebody who is questing to be the author of my own story. What this reflection is, is a reflection of my lack of consistency. Now, this is a pattern I’ve had throughout my life. In fact, I remember my father telling me this, gosh, when I was about 10 years old and this story coming out. I was taking martial arts, I was taking Tetsudo at the time. He didn’t want to sign me up for classes because he said I never finish anything I start. So that story has stuck with me, and I’m not saying that he planted that in me by any means. Because obviously, he saw me not finishing other aspects of things that I was doing. Sure, I finished a lot of things, especially sports and different educational quests. But there was a consistent pattern here, and that can easily from someone from outside, from the outside looking in, can say, “You didn’t stick to your workouts, you didn’t get a black belt in Brazilian Ju Jitsu when you started. Or Tetsudo.” Or whatever it is. That’s a reflection of your lack of desire. Or whatever it may be.

The truth is, it’s a reflection of me inside. I’m going to invite you all to try this on for a moment. Isn’t everything we do truly a reflection of us? It doesn’t say that we don’t love somebody because we don’t call them. It doesn’t say that we don’t care about our employees because we don’t tell them. It doesn’t say that within other areas of relationships that we’re not invested, or it doesn’t say that we don’t have a filled soul because we don’t practice a certain religion, or practice meditation or whatever that may be.

Truly what it is reflecting is a reflection on us, and what’s going on inside of us or maybe our shortcomings in some ways or things that we’re working on might be a better way of saying that.

What I’m going to invite you to do is look at your Five to Thrive. Where are you seeing a reflection of yourself coming in? What you’re putting out is really a reflection inside of yourself in some way, shape, or form. Take what I’m talking about, this gratitude journal. My wife listens to these, so I’m sorry babe, I love you. But the reflection of it is just I haven’t finished it. I can see that being in somebody else’s eyes, I can see somebody looking at me and just going, man if they don’t know my wife and I and our relationship and how great it is, they might say, “Geez, obviously he doesn’t care,” or doesn’t care enough, or whatever it is.

But it’s not a reflection on the way I feel about her, or a reflection on my gratitude for her because it’s immense. It’s a reflection of my pattern of inconsistency. Inconsistency and follow through, all the way through. When I started doing this with my Five to Thrive, I saw several areas in my business, in relationships, soul, in every category where I would push it to 90%, 80, maybe even 98% completion, and I would leave it aside. I wouldn’t finish it.

Then, so the next question … And I invite you to do this too, this is a journey I’m on and I’m inviting you to go on this journey with me, is ask yourself why? Why are you not pushing through? Why are you not finishing that last percentile? That’s the real lesson here; is figuring out that why. The why is different, well it was for me, in a lot of the situations. But what I narrowed it down to was the consistency. Not going too much into my story and the story that I created, but you want to find your own. We do a deeper dive into the Author of Your Own Story university, where we go really into this. Because once you figure out your why, why you’re doing the patterns you’re doing, the reflections, you can change that story. But until you figure out the why, you really have to come up with discipline, and kind of beat down and find other ways and tricks and mechanisms to get over that hump.

All of us have these, by the way. There’s not one person I’ve ever met, coached … I don’t care if it is a multi-millionaire business owner, or it’s somebody that I have a conversation with that I’ve just met. You can see it in them, I just do it so often. I would be almost stupid not to see the patterns, it’s just you can read it really quickly. So we all have them, and that’s okay. There’s nothing wrong with it, and no need to be judgemental about it. The key is having a deep dive with that.

So if you have a coach, make sure you and your coach are doing this. This should be step one for any great coach, should be doing this for you. If you don’t have a coach and you’re looking for one, reach out to me and I’m happy to try to refer you out to whoever I think is the best fit for you. I know a lot of coaches and mentors in this world, and along my journey as well. Of course, if you want a group environment, come and join us in the Author of Your Own Story University, where we can guide you through these exercises in a very safe, non-intimidating group environment. Of course, you can do the work on your own. In fact, a lot of the homework you’re doing on your own. This is why it’s personal development, right? Nobody can change you, it’s always personal, you have to change yourself.

So, Author of Your Own Story University is a great avenue. Either way, have a coach, if you don’t have one and you want a mentor or coach, reach out to me. I’ll see if I can find you a good fit. In fact, I know I can find you a good fit. <iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6153736/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Back in the early 2000s, I was a proud business owner. I had a business mentor that I was working with and he told me, “Doug, you need to build it before you need it.” Now, this is one of the most successful people I have ever met at the time and what he was really telling me was I need to start building the infrastructure in my business before I actually needed it. What I was doing is what most business owners, in fact, most of us do, right? We start building things or getting things in an order when we need them whether that be a relationship, whether it be a friendship when it comes to networking, or just whether a skill or even fitness. We try to get in shape for summer. We try to get in shape for the new year when that time is there.

For me, what it was going is my business was doing great and what he was trying to tell me is I was going to grow. Employees are going to come and go and I needed to build an employee hiring system before I needed it and he was right. I had employees leaving as they started to move and atriculate around the country and I also had demand coming into my business. I needed to have a B team as he called it or a minor league team in place.

Now, fast forward to today and it’s been gosh, quite a while. It’s been almost 15 years or so and now, just this very weekend my wife was extremely ill. She got sick and she couldn’t even leave the bedroom. She couldn’t leave the room. She was so ill and my son, my eight-month-old little guy was also sick. Here I am the father and husband trying to do the best I can, trying to take care of both of them. There’s only so much I could do and I was juggling and launched another new business and I’ve got coaching clients coming in. Impossible to do it all, except for that it wasn’t. It actually wasn’t very hard at all because I built my business before just to be able to handle these types of situations.

Now, truth be told I built my business really so I could go travel, have fun and be the author of my own story but as I’ve gotten older, as I’ve gotten married and raised a family or raising a family, I’ve really been able to leverage what I’ve built in order to spend time and take care of my family, which is the most important thing to me. At the same time, I had the infrastructure in place for each of my businesses that nothing went through the tracks. Everything moved so smoothly. It allowed me to spend that focus time, that quality time nurturing both my wife and my little baby son. Even after I recorded this Daily Growth Act, I will walk outside and I’ll be able to play with both of them, cherishing that precious time that everybody talks about. People talk about they don’t miss out on that or I wish I would’ve spent more time. Yeah, how many of us build our lives in such a manner that allow us to do what’s important? You need to build it before you need it.

Now often, you’ve heard me in this Daily Growth Act say, “Show me your calendar and I’ll show you your priorities.” That’s very true but I can also look at your lifestyle and locate what your priorities were several weeks, months, or even years before. It’s just like looking at someone’s body, you know what they’re priorities are. If they’re really fit, you know fitness is a priority for them. If they’re really out of shape, chances are fitness isn’t a priority and it’s probably talk. This goes for your business, too.

I recommend grabbing your journal right now, taking on this exercise of writing out your Five to Thrive. Where in that Five to Thrive if you want to have forward-thinking where you can start building it before you need it? Where are some things you could have? Maybe it’s in the area of your body. Maybe you’re getting older and you want to make sure you have a consistent exercise that you could enjoy. Maybe you’re like me a couple of years ago, I was still playing competitive soccer. You know with a bunch of people literally half my age. It wasn’t sustainable for the lifestyle that I wanted so I had to build another mechanism. Another way of staying in shape and being healthy that I could continue on and continue for years to come maybe even decades.

Maybe it’s in your mind. Maybe you need to build something else. Maybe you need to learn new skills, the economy and market are always changing. Maybe it’s a foreign language. Maybe it’s the area of relationships. Maybe you should look around and see the people that you’re spending time with. Do they mirror the life that you want to live, the things that you want to do? Maybe it’s a romantic relationship. Maybe it’s time to make some changes. Maybe you’re like a friend of mine I was talking to today who said, “Hey, I want to start building my life for kids.” He wants to have kids and get married and so he is actually is now trying to prep his business. Kudos to you if you’re listening right now.

Also, maybe it’s in the area of your business. Do you want to scale? Do you want to be able to have the freedom? How many business owners talk about having freedom? Yet, realize when you start a business you have anything but unless you put those things in place.

Write those down because now I’m having the clarity of mindset. The truth will set you free. You can actually start building it before you need it and maybe you’ll find yourself like me where you’ve spent years building something around the lifestyle that you want and you’ve actually achieved it but maybe even looks a little different. Maybe something happens like your family gets sick and now that you have this infrastructure around you that’s the author of your own story lifestyle as I like to call it, you’re able to do much more. You are able to take I and then some, something you never expected or planned for because you’ve built it before you needed it.

Revisit: No Man’s Land

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6149817/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today, I’m specifically going to talk about business. Now, if you’re not a business owner, just stay tuned, because this could apply to you, or at least you’ll learn a little bit more about the things that you should understand.

Often times, I’m very lucky that I get to see the insides of a lot of businesses. Now, I see them through two different lenses. I see them, one, with my clients. So my coaching clients, what I do is kind of more a business lifestyle coaching, so it’s a one year program where I do a deep dive with the business owner and we go over all their Five to Thrive on a weekly basis, and also long-term visioning. And part of that is I actually get to see inside their financials, and helping them strategize their business to help it grow.

The second lens that I see it through is as an investor. I’m able to invest in businesses, which I’m very fortunate for, and often times that investment is an exchange, as a role or a seat on their advisory board, and I’ll also look at the financial statement. When I look at their financial statement, oftentimes they’ll show, “Hey, look how profitable I am, Doug, I’m love for you to come in as an investor, and kind of act as an advisor or a coach, so to speak, and help us tweak some aspects and see how we can grow this business, and we’ll give you X percentage of the business.” But when I look at their PnL, or I look at what’s going on, and I look at maybe there are three or four business owners is the one I’m thinking of that I just recently talked to, and they’re profitable. They’re making over $300,000 a year. That’s fantastic, except for one problem.

There are four partners in this particular business, and none of them are receiving a paycheck. Okay. This is kind of common, in fact, it’s almost always common, but the problem is, is to replace two of the key members, they would have to bring in somebody at a salary that would be $150,000 a year minimum to replace those two key members, and that covers all their profit. Now, you have two other partners in there that aren’t getting paid that are hoping for some kind of payout, and now they’re willing to give me a large chunk of that business to come in as an advisor and help them grow and help them scale. That doesn’t equate. They’re in an area of what I call No Man’s Land. They need the investment, they need the intellectual capital, and they need what I can bring you with my marketing agency and then my coaching to help them scale their business to get to the next level. They’re at that gap. The problem is that they can’t afford it, and they can’t afford to pay somebody else.

Their dream, of course, as business owners, as most business owners are, is to turn a profit and also to be able to eventually step out, or have an exit of the business. But if they are actually to pay somebody, pay somebody a workable salary, or what we’d look at as a salary that most people would take to cover their spot, so whatever tasks that they do. Remember they have two key members in this business. So to pay somebody, it’s a minimum of $150,000 a year for the two key members. Now the other two, you could probably find somebody at a little bit lower rate, and they’re going to be listening to this, so no offense here, but they know this, but still they would be at a deficit right now, right? If you were actually to take that $300,000, reinvest it into the business by hiring in and replacing those four key workers, you’re in a deficit. You’re at a loss all of a sudden.

When I look at a business, and if you’re an employee and you look at a business, and you look at you’re in a business where your boss is just doing a ton of work, what would it cost to replace that key person, or that key personnel that’s part of the business. That’s what we want to look at as far as what we call No Man’s Land. No Man’s Land again is that point where you’ve built a business, you’ve done your sweat equity, and that’s amazing, and if you’ve done that I applaud you. I’ve been there, I totally understand what you’re going through. However, if you want to replace yourself, and truly be a profitable business, you should be able to at least pay yourself and replace yourself, or at least have the income that you could replace yourself, if you get sick, something happens, God forbid there’s an accident, something along those lines.

In that gap, that gap between start-up phase and then real profitable phase where you can bring in somebody else to come in as an advisor or a key position in your company, you’re in No Man’s Land. You’re in this little space where you really need to figure out how to make that profit, how to make that next turn. Maybe it is bringing in an advisor and then negotiating something with them. But figuring out what that is. Now, if you’re an employee, you want to look at your business or your boss’s business, and see if that’s in No Man’s Land too.

I would guess that almost every business I’ve ever looked at that has gone through the No Man’s Land phase hasn’t thought about it. They haven’t thought about the fact that they’re in a position where it looks profitable, it looks like they’re doing great, but actually when you pencil it out and you add in all the other factors, the sweat equity, and you replace those key people, they’re actually in debt, and they’re actually not profitable at all. This isn’t to despair them because there’s a way around that. You have to come up with an actionable plan to get out of No Man’s Land.

That’s it for me today. Just a quick business tip, something I see all the time, and I hope you don’t get into … Well, I hope you do get into No Man’s Land, recognize it, and then get out. The key to everything, of course, is just recognizing these aspects of it. Again, if you’re an employee and your boss is in there, if you have that kind of relationship, sit them down and talk to them about it, and look at what that is, because not that anybody personally is replaceable, but you need to make sure that a business is able to sustain income revenue in case something happens to somebody, and therefore I can pay the rest of their employees, their staffs, and everybody can have a nice livelihood, and of course be the author of their own story.

Have a great day, and remember, share this with at least three people that you know. Build your tribe. Start the conversation. I love to talk to you about it more in the Author of Your Own Story group, and that’s it for today. Have a great day, and remember, go out and be the author of your own story.

Compress Time And Shorten The Gap

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6147180/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Often times when we’re looking at doing something we take the DIY approach to it. There’s nothing wrong with that. Often times we wanna learn a foreign language, we might buy audio cassettes, we might buy a book, we might do some research online. When it comes to our body, maybe it’s working out, maybe we decide we wanna get a subscription to men’s fitness or women’s fitness and maybe we buy a book or two or maybe even take a class. But how often do we actually take that goal and compress the time? Compress the time and shorten the gap from where we are today to where we wanna be. Now, the key to this is finding somebody who’s been there and done that and can actually help us along the way.

In the area of your mind, I made an example of learning Spanish. Yes you can read books, yes you can listen to audio but by finding a qualified Spanish instructor, it’s gonna help you compress that time so you can focus on the most important areas of that learning. Now, this can go with all skills. So if you wanna learn a particular application on the web or an internet protocol. What I do is I hire the best of the best to teach me exactly how to do it. Yes, you can go to something like Linda.com or many of the other great platforms that are out there to teach you. Even YouTube has great tutorials. But by hiring an expert, they can actually compress that time and shorten the gap between where you wanna be and where you are today. For me, when I hire a professional, I don’t have to sit through hours of videos or courses, they can show me the tips and tricks right away that apply to what my outcome is.

This also goes in the area of business and finance and that’s why I seek the best financial advice whenever possible, but also with coaching. I always have a coach in my corner, help me see my blind spots but also to help me make sure that I’m doing the right things to get to where I wanna go. This is exactly what I do for my clients. Now in the area of relationships, having somebody that can actually help you with your relationships is critical. Relationships are key. Now I know from my own personal experience when the relationships in my life aren’t working really well, nothing seems to work well. So, I’ve actually hired coaches in different areas. Whether it be relations with my wife in a marriage, but also with my family or with co-workers, how to better communicate with people. Especially making sure that my communication style lands on them and that’s where it’s critical.

So what I’m gonna invite you to do today is look at your five to thrive, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships and your business and look at what your outcomes are in these areas. What can you do to shorten the gap? What can you do in each of these areas to shorten the gap from where you are today to where you wanna be and compress that learning time. Learn from other people’s mistakes, learn from other people’s experiences so you don’t have to go through ’em. That way you can enjoy the journey a little bit more. So in your mind, if there’s an area you wanna learn. Maybe again, maybe it’s web programming. Maybe you’d hire the best web programmer and yeah maybe a Lynda.com course is only gonna cost you 30 dollars a month but what’s the opportunity cost of the time that somebody else could just show you. Whether it be Russel Brunson or somebody that charges $150,000 a year but what can they actually show you and what’s your time worth? That’s really important to understand.

And in the area of your body, you might wanna hire a coach, a personal trainer. Look, I have over 18 degrees and certifications in the health and fitness field yet I have a trainer. I have a trainer that’s showing me different things. They’re compressing time. I’m learning new skills and they’re also keeping me accountable and making sure I’m doing those things that yeah I might skip in a workout because it’s just not convenient or fun. In the area like you said, in the area of the soul, what is that for you? For me, it’s getting outdoors. So maybe I would get somebody like a snowboarding instructor so I can get better at snowboarding. I started snowboarding last year. I’ve always skied. So that’s something that’s interesting. That’s something that I do. And then maybe in the area of relationships. Like I said, I’m constantly looking to improve my skill sets in the area of relationships both with my wife and my child so I’m learning different techniques on how to communicate to him so he can understand me. But also a staff and public speaking.

Instead of just taking a public speaking course, what I would do is I would hire somebody who teaches public speaking at a very high level and that way again, I’m compressing my time. I can get there faster. In the area of my business, again, I have a coach. It’s always important to have somebody looking at your back and making sure you can get them. Now, if you can’t afford somebody, this is something that comes up a lot, people say “Doug I’d love to coach with you but I can’t afford it, what can I do?” Or they wanna coach with somebody else and they’re looking for suggestions. Can I do an internship? An apprenticeship? Often times what I tell them is look, if you wanna do all these things and I recommend time in every area of your life, the best that you can. Except for those things that you wanna stop and smell the roses right? But things when it comes to learning and growth if you can shorten the gap, do it. Do it at all costs and what I say is we all have things and skill sets that we can bring to the table, extra value.

What you could do, is let’s just say it’s the, I’ll make it up, it’s the personal trainer. You can’t afford a personal trainer or maybe you’ve vested somewhere else. I’ll also tell you that probably you can afford it, you’ve just chosen to spend your money elsewhere. How was happy hour, right? So, what you wanna think about with this personal trainer is where could you add massive value? Where could you add massive value to them? So say my trainer charges 150 dollars an hour for personal training and I wanna go three times a week. So that’s 450 a week. Maybe I just don’t have like free-flowing cash right now. Well, what could I do? Maybe I can help him with his cleaning his gym, help him with his website, help him with his marketing by passing out flyers. There’s a lot of ways you can do this. Be creative. Do not let an objection or what you think is a barrier to stop you from moving forward. Especially when it comes to growth. I want it all for you.

Again, grab your five to thrive. Grab your journal, write down your five to thrive and look at all the areas of where you want outcomes and how can you compress time. Who is somebody you can reach out to? If you don’t know who you can reach out to, reach out to me personally, I will put you in contact with somebody that can potentially help you. Now again, you have to make the investment in yourself, I can’t do that for you, but let me know how I can help you. Of course, go over to authorofyourownstory.com as well, where you can get more tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your inbox so you don’t miss the great information coming at you every single day.
