What else is possible?

I just got back from the gym and I had a conversation actually with a young entrepreneur. What they said to me was, well they asked me a question, they said, “Hey look, I’m either thinking about traveling or thinking about growing my business. What do you think I should do?”

The first thing I thought of is, “Why are you living in the world of or, there’s an and here too.”  It reminded me of something my wife says to me often but says it to a lot of people, and she does it very effectively. The question she just turns around and asks and says, “What else is possible?” When we’re scheduling our lives, running multiple businesses, having a newborn, things can get hectic as every parent knows. Now, with The Author of Your Own Story lifestyle that we live, we also do a lot of traveling. With that becomes certain times where I’m scheduling a meeting. Maybe I have a meeting for one of my agencies or maybe I’m doing an interview or I’m being on a podcast, something comes up. I vook my time, let’s say, from 1 pm to 3 pm for these particular meetings and so I need to be in a quieter environment.

Then, maybe my wife has also got a coaching client or maybe she needs help around the house or help with our son, something along those lines. It’s easy for me to say, “No, I’m busy during these times, I can’t do this. I can’t take our son, I can’t do that.” Now, she very eloquently says, “Okay, what else is possible?” This opens up a river of possibilities. We can bring in a friend who’s a nanny. I can actually take my son and turn that interview that I was going to go into an interview with my son, which is even more special to me. What else is possible? Maybe I could reschedule or maybe she could reschedule? There’s a lot of other options is what I’m getting at.

What else is possible is a simple question that you can ask yourself or anybody else when they give you a black and white answer or statement. Is it a yes or a no? It almost always can be an and. Simply asking what else is possible to yourself or to somebody else is a great technique that you can utilize to push yourself a little further but also open up different perspectives. I use this for sales. I don’t say what else is possible but I use this terminology or this framework to frame a sales conversation as well in business and you can use this in all areas of your life.

What I’m going to ask you to do is grab your Five to Thrive, your mind, body, soul relationships and your business and ask yourself, “Where am I living in the world of or and what else is possible?” I think you’re going to find that if you take five minutes, maybe even 20 minutes is what I’d really like you to do, and really sit down with this list and ask yourself. Now, I don’t care if you’re a billionaire, if you run multiple multinational corporations, you’re a stay-at-home mom or you’re a student. Whatever it is, this system really works.

All you have to do is question yourself. Come up with your list and ask yourself those questions. Where am I living in the world of or and what else is possible? That’s it for me today. As always, go to authorofyourownstory.com where you can get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your inbox each and every day. Know Your Numbers

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6036009/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now if you’ve been a listener for a long time, or you’ve done coaching with somebody in our team, you’re really familiar with the Five to Thrive. It’s a holistic representation of your life.

Now in your Five to Thrive you really need to know your numbers. You need to know your numbers so you could hit your goals. Where are you? I had a talk with a business owner this morning. Now, this business owner’s very savvy and has done very well. And they invited me to come on as a member of their team, an equity partner really, and when I asked them for their numbers they just didn’t know. You see they were an extremely successful business owner, but yet they didn’t understand what the lifeblood of their business was. What were their cash flows, how was their balance sheet looking, what were their profit and loss statements like, how much actual money do they get gross versus net?

Now, of course, they have somebody who can send me this information, but this got me to thinking, got me to thinking, “How often do people that I talk to not know their numbers?” Right? How often do you not know your numbers in your body? Maybe you’re trying to lose weight, well where are you today and where do you want to get going? Right? Where are you right now in this moment? Maybe you’re looking to gaining a body, or muscle mass and losing body fat. Well, do you know your numbers? Do you know your body fat percentage? Right now in this day and age, you can actually look at body fat percentage in different parts of your body, and that can give your fitness professional and yourself a lot of insight into what kind of training you should be doing, as well as your nutrition. And speaking of nutrition, do you know your numbers there? Do you know your macro-nutrients? Do you know what calories you should be eating? If you believe in counting calories, and that’s a controversial subject in itself.

What about your relationships? Oftentimes I’ll ask my wife, I’ll say, “Hey what is your love tank? On a scale of one to five, how full is your love tank?” You know, I’ll also ask her, “How am I doing as a husband on a scale of one to five?” Now I like the scale of one to five versus one to ten because it really narrows things out. And oftentimes she’ll tell me a four or five, but there are those times when she’ll say, “Doug it’s a three.” And then I’ll want to know why, and it could be something going on in her world, or it could be something that I’m doing or just not knowing, I mean I’m a guy, right? So this happens every once in a while, but by knowing my numbers, I can course correct. If I would have gone through our relationship like I did early on years and years ago, just assuming things were okay, and realize that my wife is a three, maybe even a two at times. I’m thinking it’s a four or five and just carrying on and forgetting about her unintentionally because I didn’t know my numbers.

Now I do this in all areas of my life, and when we look at the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle, and if you’ve done the Seven Days to Becoming of Your Author of Your Own Lifestyle, you’re very familiar with the game that we put on. So this is a 90-day game where we actually quantify your goals in five different areas, so your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business, and we assign a number to those goals. That way, at the end of the day or week, month, quarter, year, you know if you’re winning, you know where your numbers are. But I want to take this conversation a step further with you. If you’re a business owner, you just need to know your numbers. This is business 101, right? You need to know how healthy your business is. How are you going to determine how much marketing you should be spending, what your budget is, what your costs are, what is your actual, how much your sales. How can you do sales forecasting without knowing your numbers? How can you invite a business coach to come onboard your team and try to give them equity without knowing exactly what that equity is worth?

Now in your body, the same thing, I use those analogies earlier. But what about your soul? Are there numbers there that you can attribute? Do you know what they are? Is it quantifiable? Now, I don’t believe everything needs to be quantifiable at all, but sometimes I find that this really helps the clients that I’m working with, and it really helps them understand what’s going on in their world. So, if you’re a business owner, you’ve got to know your numbers. You’ve got to know your overhead, you’ve got to know your cost per goods, got to know your margins, got to know your employee expenses. When is payroll coming out, and how much is coming out each and every time? When are taxes do? Are you doing quarterlies if you’re in the States? What is going on in your business?

Now you can apply this to all other areas including your mind, and I highly recommend you do this. So what I want you to do is grab your journal right now, and starting writing out where are your numbers, what are your goals. And an easy one to attack right away is if you’re a business owner and I ask you what are your gross receipts, what’s your net, what’s your personal take home. Because at the end of the day you have to feed your family too, so if I ask you these numbers, can you tell me right away? And if you have multiple businesses I know it gets more complex, but again, these are the basics and you should know these numbers. I know I do.

Now also, in your body, it’s another easy one to go after. Whatever your goal is in your body, is that a quantifiable number and do you know them? Do you know roughly how many calories you’re eating? Do you know roughly how many meals you should be taking? Do you know your vitamin, vitamin regimen? Do you know your macro-nutrients?

Now you can apply this to other areas, but I want you to write these down. What I think you’re going to find are things that most people I talk to do fine. They skip them over but you’ll find that if you write them down, you’ll realize that you may not know as much as you thought you did, right? And now this is great, this is a great realization because now you can target with laser-like focus your education. Now, this should be your first priority over reading another business book, or over-reading another book on dieting, or over-reading another book or program on losing weight, or whatever it is for you. Maybe it’s relationships, maybe you’re like me and you want to turn to your spouse, or a friend, and say, “Hi, how am I doing? How would you rate me on a scale of one to five?” I could tell you right now exactly what my wife would say. She’d say a five. Because I just asked her. I just got back from a walk, I took a break in the day to go walk with her and my son and I asked her what my numbers are. It’s an easy question. It’s also she’s free to give me as much scrutiny as possible, but it’s something we’ve worked on in our relationship very hard.

If I don’t know my numbers, I can’t course-correct. I can’t steer that ship in another direction should it be going the wrong way. And if I’m doing great, hey I want to give myself a pat on the back. Not because I’m ego-driven but because I deserve it, and I also want to replicate those things that I’m doing so well. Like taking a break in the day for her is huge, so I’m able to do that because I’m the author of my own story. You know, I’m able to take breaks any time I want. And I want that for you. The first step here, right now, is knowing your numbers. So take a moment right now to jot those down.

Success Without Freedom

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6030701/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

What is success without freedom? Now, this is a common question I ask business owners when I’m coaching them, or just even during an initial conversation. The reason I ask this is oftentimes as business owners we actually go after success so hard that we lose freedom. I’ve certainly been in this case. When you’re looking at this even if you’re an employee or you’re going after another goal. Right? You’re trying to build your first business, or maybe you’re just working a typical 9:00 to 5:00, but you’re really going after the author of your own story lifestyle so you’re putting other things aside.

Now, that’s okay temporarily. In life we make sacrifices. Right? Some people have a problem with the word sacrifice. I don’t. Sometimes what we really are doing is putting one thing aside to after a goal or a dream. What happens all too often with business owners, especially solopreneurs or people that have less than 10 employees under one roof, what happens is they define success by trying to build their business in the amount of time they’re putting in, and the feeling they get of just spinning their wheels. Right? I have a conversation with a business owner yesterday and the question I asked him, very simple, and I’m going to ask you this question right now. If you are today the exact same place you were last year and if you’re going to be in same place next year, how does that make you feel? Right? The reason I asked this question, especially from business owners, although this could apply to somebody else that’s going after something, is oftentimes you lose freedom in your pursuant to success.

More often than not you haven’t even scratched the surface of success, or what is even possible for you and your business. That’s where you hire a coach, a coach or a mentor. You see, I have a coach. It’s somebody that I work with, and it’s somebody that keeps me accountable, because the worse thing for me, the absolutely worse thing would be to be where I am next year exactly where I am today. Now, love where I am. Right? I actually have a great life. I do really well, but I’m always looking to grow. I’m always looking to better myself and help those around me. The way I want to play in this world, the way that I want to play is at a higher level. In order to get there, I can’t be in the same place, and that’s where a coach helps you. Right?

I work with business owners. I talked to them about the same thing. You can’t afford a coach, be creative. Work out, give a percentage of your company. Right? Let’s say you’re making $300,00, $400,000 a year in your business, but you know bringing in a coach or something and giving them equity or giving a business strategist or a partner equity and you’ll make $1-2 million. Well, that’s a huge …that’s an increase in the percentage that you’re going to be taking home, the actual dollar amount. Your cash flow increases and yeah, there’s risk. There’s risk for both parties, but you’re also alleviating yourself. Right? You’re alleviating yourself of some of the burden that you’re doing with your business. Right? Because you’re giving up some of the business but your success ratio is probably going to be a lot higher.

Of course, you got to hire the right person. Right? If you’re going to partner, you got to bring the right person on, and I can’t emphasize that enough, and I’m suggesting you do that. If you find yourself in your business just spinning your wheels, or maybe you’re an employee and you try to start a company, or you’re a skilled laborer. Right? Maybe you are a great computer programmer. You’re an amazing personal trainer, chiropractor, whatever it is. You have great skills, but you don’t understand the business portion of it. Bringing on somebody else to give you more freedom as well as more success is a much better way. When you look at giving up freedom for success, that is not about being the author of your own story. Right? You shouldn’t have to do that. Maybe temporarily. Maybe a couple weeks here and there you dive deep into something that’s going to allow you to take that next step forward or launch you, and I’m certainly not against that at all.

What I see all too often in the people that I work with and coach and especially the people that I don’t end up coaching because so they’re so narrow … they’re narrow-minded, narrow sighted at the moment that they’re in, is they’re out looking at possibilities. If you are today the exact same place you were last year and if you’re doing the same things, you’re going to be in that same place a year from today. There’s a problem there if that’s not exactly where you want to be. In today’s message what I want you to do, just think about it, grab your five to thrive. Now, what would it feel like to be in the exact same place you are today one year from now? Maybe that’s success for you. Maybe you’re doing perfectly. Maybe everything’s great, and maybe you’re okay with staying the same, but maybe you’re like me. Maybe you want to grow. Maybe you want to take that next evolution.

Ask yourself this question: How can get there? How can you shorten that gap? What’s the difference between where you are today and where you want to be? How can you compress that? Is that getting a mentor? I just hired a personal trainer because I want to compress that gap in my body and the fitness and that things that I’m doing. I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 20 years, yet I can always learn more and have someone keep me accountable, give me that extra push. Something that I just have to show up for. Right? What is that for you? Is that in your business? If it’s in your business, what are you going to do? Are you going to take courses? Are you going to bring on a mentor? What is it for you? Is it in another area? That’s completely up to you.

The key here is not struggling. Right? Don’t give up freedom for success. You can have it both. We want you to live in the world of “and,” not in the world of “or.” That’s it for me today. Go out and inspire somebody simply by being the author of your own story. If you have any questions, I’d love to talk to you in our community on Facebook. Fill Your Cup First

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6028556/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I was talking to a business owner just this morning. We were talking about were his business goals, but it became very clear that he wasn’t actually fulfilled. This is a common conversation with business owners. What came evident is that he was actually scheduling time in his calendar for sales, for marketing, for his staff, and for his family, but what he wasn’t doing was prioritizing the time for himself. He wasn’t filling his own cup.

People were coming into him every single day draining, asking him for the answers, asking him how should I do this, how should I do that, how should I live my life? He was an idol to many people, but what he wasn’t doing was fill his cup back. See, people were drawing from him on regular basis. It was beating him down, and he was just trying to give and give more. That was just nature. He’s just a great person. But what he wasn’t doing was refilling his own emotional cup, his own emotional bank, filling his soul.

How often do you do this, or do I, right? How often do we schedule our weeks out and our ideal week going after our goals and our dreams, and filling in those big rocks, if you’re doing it right? But a lot of times, we neglect the big rocks of our own soul or filling our own cup, those things that make us happy.

So what I recommended to him was to take at least three times each week, when you’re planning out your week, you’re planning out your meetings, you’re planning out what you’re going to do and what’s going to happen, plan out those big rocks, those chunks that are going to fill your cup. What are they to you?

Now for me, it’s going outside. It’s going into the mountains. It’s taking the adventure van and my family away. It’s going snowboarding or skiing. It’s really just having an epic adventure, right? That’s what fills my soul. Or playing sports. I love doing that. So I have to schedule that in, because if I don’t, running multiple businesses, people will fill my schedule instantly. In fact, just with LinkedIn requests for time for meetings alone for people I don’t even know would completely fill my calendar in a week or if not two weeks, easily on a given day, so I have to really guard my time closely. What I really have to do is schedule those fill your cup moments.

Now, when we talk about the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle, a lot of times we talk about freedom. There’s freedom in the scheduling if you do it properly, and part of that is scheduling time for yourself. What is it that fills you up? What is it that lights you up every time you do it? Is it going to the movies? Is it hanging out with friends? Or are you like me? You like epic adventures, and you like going out into the mountains and doing something crazy like that? Is it playing sports? Is it going to the gym? Is it playing music? Is it painting?

Whatever it is for you, what I want you to do is write those things down and make sure you’re scheduling those things for yourself as a priority. Because as you step in and step up to Author Your Own Story lifestyle, people are going to ask you for more and more. Why? Because you’re inspiring people. You’re doing what most people only talk about. When you’re a doer, when you’re somebody that people start looking up to, they want to draw from you.

Now, it’s not a negative thing, right? They’re coming to you because they’re looking to you with hope, and they want to withdraw deposits from you. They ask questions, take your time, steal some of your energy, right? There are energy vampires out there. We know that, and I’m sure you can think of somebody right off the top of your head that’s one of them. So what you want to do is protect, sacredly protect filling your cup, because you can’t actually spill out into other people unless you’re completely filled. If you get drained and people are still trying to draw from you, and maybe you’re like me, or you’re like this business owner, and you just want to give to people, then you’re going to get run down. You’re going to get sick. You’re going to get tired. You’re going to get angry, moody. All of these things. You’ll actually repulse people and push them back, you know, unintentionally, simply because you just haven’t taken the time to fill your own cup.

So here, today, I’m asking you to prioritize yourself in your schedule. So grab your schedule right now. If you’re driving, you’re working out at the gym, take a break. I know a lot of you do. But as soon as you get home, I want you to schedule. Grab your phone, whatever it is, and schedule at least three chunks, at least 90 minutes. Of course, that’s just an arbitrary number. Three chunks in your week where you’re filling your cup, doing things for yourself, whatever that is. Maybe it’s getting a massage or making an appointment. Maybe it’s reading a book, or maybe it’s catching up on the daily growth hacks and applying them. Maybe that’s what fills you up. I don’t know. To each of us, it’s going to be different.

Remember, this is your story and so we want to make sure you’re ready. As soon as you keep building, people are going to make withdraws, and as you’re filling your cup, you’re going to be able to give at such a higher level. That’s what I want for you.

Revisit: Take A Whack At It!

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6026886/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Do you have a goal, or a dream, or something you want to do, and you just can’t take the first step? Take a whack at it. You know, you can’t hit a home run unless you step up to plate. You can’t catch a fish unless your line is in water. Whatever it is you want to do, go for it right now. I’m giving you full and complete permission. If you want to sing, go sing in the shower. Sing to your friends. Go to karaoke. Give it a shot.

There are too many people that I know in my life, and one of the reasons I started this daily growth hack, was to give them some inspiration. They have dreams. They have goals, and they keep telling me, “Doug, I wish I could do what you’re doing. I just can’t. It’s good for you, but for me, I’ve got x, y, and z reason that I can’t do what I want to do.” I hear this every single day. In my coaching business, this is a key indicator. Look, I can stop you from all of this problems. Just go for it. That’s the answer. It’s as simple as that. Take a whack at, whatever it is.

Do you want to be a professional tennis player? Get out and play tennis. It’s really as simple as that. Just step outside, step up to the plate, and take a swing. Babe Ruth, one of the home run kings, right? Do you know he struck out more than almost anybody else? Yeah, but yet, he stepped to the plate each and every time, and when we think of Babe Ruth, well most people anyway, think of him, think of him as a home run king, and he is. The reason he is is he took a whack at it. He stepped up to the plate each and every time and took a big swing.

Now in business and sometimes in life, I believe it’s all about hitting singles rather than swinging for the home run, but in order to even hit a single, you’ve got to step up to the plate each and every time. It’s a simple insight, but this is something I see plaguing a lot of people and probably plaguing me right now. So, what I’m going to ask you to do, grab your journal. Take out the five to thrive, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business, and ask yourself in what area are you holding back? In what area do you have a dream and an aspiration of some sort and you’re holding back, you’re not quite going for it at full throttle? Then, write that down, and why? What are your excuses?

Now if you can’t think of anything, that’s okay. We all have these self-protection mechanisms, and maybe you don’t have anything yourself. Maybe you’re going all at it with everything in life. If that’s you, I applaud you. I really do. You’re one of the rare cases, and you’re an inspiration to me. But if you’re also one of those people that are holding back, you’re also an inspiration to me, because you’re taking time to go through those daily growth acts. You’re actually taking time to do the work.

In doing the work, write it down and ask yourself, “Geez, is there something I’m always talking to people about? Am I always saying, ‘Wow, I wish I could go to Thailand, but I just don’t have the money, or my boss won’t let me off work,” or whatever it is? Or, ‘Geez, I wish I could go rock climbing, or run a marathon, or sing,’ whatever it is, “go to The Voice the show.'” Who knows? Whatever it is for you, I want you to write that down.

Now, what I want you to do is take a whack at it. What’s the first easiest step that you can do in those categories? So whether it be your business … For example, I’ve always wanted to go rock climbing. Why have I done it? I’ve had opportunities. I’ve taken classes. I just need to step up to the plate and do it. All I have to do is simply call up a friend who rock climbs and go with him or take another rock climbing class. It’s really as easy as that. That takes the, “I wish I would,” or, “I want to,” category and puts it into the, “I’m going to do it,” and, “I’ve done it,” category. That’s going to free up energy for you to achieve so much more greatness in your life, and that’s what I want for you.

The second thing I’m going to ask you to do, besides doing the work, is to share this with three people. I want you to share this with three people that you care about. By sharing this, you’re going to open that conversation up and build your tribe. I talk about this in each and every daily growth hack, because it’s so important both doing the work and sharing this and growing your tribe. So, share this and grow your tribe.

Take it even a step further. Here’s your bonus! For me, I want to share this with a couple people that rock climb. Why? Well, they’re going to know right away one that I want to rock climb. Two is it gives us conversations we can have either on the way to go rock climbing or potentially while we’re there and build that bond. Now, these are friends I already have, so I want to continue that friendship. And of course, if these are people I’m spending time with, I want to go deeper. I want to go much deeper than, “Hi. Rising Up To The Occasion

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6018963/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Just today, I had a conversation with the team members of one of my businesses. This was the leadership team for one of my marketing agencies. We meet each and every week, and one of the things that I told them, and I was upset. I was laying into them because I thought we were playing small. I thought us as a whole entire team weren’t living up to our potential, and I was actually really upset.

And what I told them was I’m not upset at you. I’m not upset at your lack of intelligence. No, it’s actually the opposite. You guys on my team are extremely intelligent. They’re the best of the best at what they do. One of the persons I was talking to is one of the best SEOs in the world. The other person is one of the best at operations. But what I was trying to explain to them is their level is up here, yet they’re playing down here. And I was, too.

The truth is, I was playing at a lower level and not holding my own standards up as high within that particular business at the moment. Now, what I started to think about is where are my five to thrive? Am I also playing small? And when I looked at it, I found several little areas where I wasn’t playing up to my potential, and that’s what angered me. You see, even in sports, I never got really upset if I lost to someone who was better than me. I always got upset when I lost to someone who was worse, and I know in business, especially in this particular business, we’re so much better than most of our competition. I don’t say that to be braggadocious at all. It’s just the worst part is we’re not living up to those expectations internally.

Now in the past, we absolutely were. But over the last couple weeks, we haven’t been, and that’s where I got upset, because I recognized that. We had the chance to step up and we didn’t take it at that time. Now, of course, it’s only been a short, short time when that happened. But at any lull, it’s easy. It’s just like that one hamburger or two hamburgers when you’re on a diet, in a week, and then it becomes three, then four. And that becomes your new norm, thus lowering your standards. And I won’t put up with that. I won’t put up with that within myself and I certainly won’t put up with that in my team.

I’m going to ask you today, like us, where are you in your five to thrive? Lowering your standards or not stepping up to where you should be. Now, once you’ve identified that … so get your five to thrive, write them out. Mind, body, soul, relationships, and business, and where are you not stepping up? Now is there an area in your mind? Are you at your full capacity? Are you playing as high as you can? If not, where are you lagging?

What about your body? Where are you not stepping up? Are you cheating on your diet? Are you not working out hard when you go to the gym? What it is you’re doing or not doing up to that level? What about your soul? Are you just skipping your meditations or your daily Bible readings or whatever it is for you. We’re all different. Where is it that you’re lagging? Where is it that you’re stopping? Is it not going out in nature as much as you should?

Where are your relationships? Are you busting your butt at work and then you get home and you see your spouse or your kids, and you’re just tired. You’re having a cocktail and you’re ah, I’m just going to watch TV and you check out. Or with friends. Are you just not stepping up to the plate and bringing energy to relationships or sharing, being vulnerable to allow that space for people around you to also share and be vulnerable. Where is it in your business? What I found with my agency team over here, where they were actually not stepping up to the plate. They weren’t stepping up to their potential. Yeah, they were doing really well. Really well, actually. But not great. Not to the level that I know that they can play at. And that’s where me as a leader, it’s up to me to keep them accountable.

And it’s up to you. You’re the leader in your life. Where are you in each of those five to thrive and where do you need to keep yourself accountable? And now that you’ve found those, I want you to take action right now. Right now in this moment. Do one thing to step up the bar. Raise it up for yourself and raise your standards. You can do so much more than you think you’re capable of. Yet, if you’re not reaching to the level you are capable of, then you’re playing even smaller.  And I won’t let that happen to me, and I certainly won’t let that happen to you.

That’s it for me today. As always, go to authorofyourownstory.com where you can get more tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your inbox. It’s Always Important To Look Back

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6017469/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

This episode we’re going to look back at the past 100 episodes of the Author of Your Own Story Daily Growth Hacks. Our team handpicks their favorite selections along with the ones that you voted for. Today, we’re going to share a mashup with you. It’s great to look back and I hope you enjoy.

Jim uses the acronym FAST how to learn anything and how to learn it faster. F stands for forgetting what you already know and really focusing on the task at hand. The A stand for being active. Now, you have to be an active participant in your learning. The S stands for your state. What emotional state are you in? Now, of course, we can always control our state. The thing that’s really important to remember is information combined with emotion helps you retain longterm learning, and T is for teach. T, teaching. When you teach something, you’re not only learning it once but you’re learning it twice.

First of all, the five-second rule is a simple technique to interrupt patterns. It’s a pattern interrupter and the reason it works is that it causes us to focus. When we focus, we activate our prefrontal cortex which actually allows us to make decisions. The way it works is simply counting backward, five, four, three, two, one. What you want to do is catch yourself in a pattern.

How do you do this? Well, the five-second rule is a really easy and simple way to do so. Simply what you do is your alarm goes off and you count backward, five, four, three, two, one. Make your decision. Launch. You get out of bed. As soon as you get downstairs and you decide you’re going to the gym and if, all of a sudden, you say, “Oh, geez. I don’t know if I really want to.” Five, four, three, two, one. All right. Cool. Decision process. What this does is allows you to be in the driver seat of your choices, the driver seat of your decisions.

I was thinking about how do you become superhuman? Why do some people seem to excel and others don’t? Then as soon as I thought that, I turned my head and I noticed a bent nail, a nail, thick nail that was bent by David Whitley when I was in a conversation with him. I’m talking to David Whitley. He pulls out this nail and bends it with his bare hands. What does it take? He told me. He’s like, “Doug, it’s mostly mental. It’s a mental game.” There’s a million strong man out there but very few can do what David does.

Inside a courtroom, there was a really intense battle between the defendant and the plaintiff. Now, the plaintiff told their story to the judge. At the end, the judge said, “Wow, that’s right.” Then the defendant went up and the defendant told their heartwarming story as well. The judge said, “Wow, that’s right.” Then, all of a sudden, the clerk looked at the judge and said, “Your Honor, they both can’t be right.” The Honor looked at the clerk and said, “Well, that’s right.” The point of the story is whatever you’re focused on, whatever you’re focused on in the moment is right.

I actually had the opportunity this particular weekend. As I’m recording it, it’s Friday night. This weekend I have a guys’ trip, an awesome guys’ trip I was really looking forward to up in Vancouver Island. I’m really excited about it but getting sick obviously a setback. They happened to shut the roads down in the mountains because of the snow. I thought, “Well, I’m getting sick. I’m not sure what I want to do here.” With a little bit of push from my wife, I actually checked in to the nicest hotel in the area that we live in. I’m really here to rest, recover but also focus. What I’ve chosen to do instead of lamenting on, oh, I wish I could have or going out and maybe even doing something like I was planning on doing.

One of the things that reminded me up because I’ve got an email this morning and the email said to me what my purpose was, why was I here, what was I to focus on in my life over these next years coming up for my family but also for my personal self so I can continue to be on the path of growth. What happened was and the hack that I’m going to give you is I wrote that email to myself. Each time that email comes in my inbox, because probably like you, I spend a lot of time on email, I get that message, open it up and I read it to myself each time.

Now, I was actually down in Colombia earlier this year and in Colombia, we were in the jungle with a shaman and we were drinking a drink called yage. During this whole ceremonial process, we’re coming out of it. One of the other people that were there, he came up to me. His name happened to be Tony. Tony came up to me and said, “What do Doug’s do?” What Tony said is he said, “No, what I want to know is what do Doug’s do?” He said, “Here’s what Tony’s do. What Tony’s do is they like to write. They write down deep thoughts and interesting ideas so they can share it with the world. That is really my passion. That’s Tony’s passion. When Tony’s are confronted with conflict, Tony’s get angry and they almost want to erupt but through the act of writing allows them to calm down and get re-centered.”

Who are you? If I were to ask you, “Who are you?”, you’d probably give me a standard response, what you do for a living, where you live, maybe a couple of your interests. Really at the core, who are you and have you taken time to actually write that down? What comes to your mind and what comes through to your heart? Who are you as a person? What are your values? What are your interests? What are those things that move you and gravitate you to a higher level?

In any relationship you have, especially intimate relationships, those that are closest to you, seem to trigger us. They seem to bring out certain times of anxiety or despair or anger or upset.

Hey, you know what happens when bad times come around is mean people get meaner, happy people get happier, joyful people get more joyful, sad people get sadder. You really go back to that set point that you have and it just amplifies it. When you get money if you’re already a jerk, then you just become a bigger jerk with money. If you’re a really nice person, you just become an even nicer person, probably giving more to others. Money amplifies the person that you really are but so do hard times. Hard times actually bring you back to that set point and amplify what that is.

Now, see, there’s a difference between positivity and lying to yourself or being deceitful to yourself to protect yourself. Relationships, this is one we often lie to ourselves about. My marriage is great. We tell everybody else that. How are you doing? I’m doing fantastic. Really there are all kinds of things going on in the background. We’re lying to ourselves and to each other. In your relationships, where are you honestly?

I want to talk to you about what is your first impression or what is the first impression your business gets or what I call your home base which is your website? Now, why is this important? Well, every time we do a search on the internet, now when somebody does a search, it’s a search of intent. It’s a search where you’re actually trying to solve a problem. You’re looking for a solution. Doing this as a business owner, your first impression or your home base is going to be your website. It’s even more important I would say that your storefront.

Often time what happens is a business owner is building the business as a solopreneur and they surround themselves with key people. Yet, they haven’t been able to take themselves out of the business. In fact, even a worst-case scenario, they branded their business around their skillsets and about their name. Now, their business is synonymous with them. They didn’t build their business for success or an exit strategy. This is something that I recommend all business owners consider. Build your business so you can sell it. Now, maybe you don’t want to sell it and that’s fine. But by building your business so you could sell it, so you’re building it as if you’re going to sell it, this gives you a whole variety of opportunities. One of those key opportunities is pulling yourself out of the business so you stop being the bottleneck of that business and you can go out and you can travel. You can be the author of your own story.

A skateboarder might be skating and trying a really complicated trick and they might cut their head, they might cut their hand, they might cut their leg, but they try and try and try again. But the point is despite the pain, despite the setbacks, despite the failures, they are trying and trying again. They are determined. They’re passionate and they’re dedicated to what they’re trying to accomplish. The same could be said for the entrepreneur. I’ve never met an entrepreneur where every day or everything they’ve done has just been easy. It’s not at all. It’s the day-to-day grind. It’s the day-to-day in the business, the focus, attempts at making things work because they’re failing more often than not, failing all the time, but failing forward, consciously failing forward and making sure they’re following a path that works for them.

How many times you actually wasting time during your day? Now, when I have this conversation, of course, it’s usually over somebody’s goals. What I’m talking about is how much time do you actually spend on social media, on Facebook just catching up on what people are doing or on YouTube watching videos that you don’t even care about, in fact, videos that leave you less inspired when you walk away? These could be music videos or how to videos or something else or TV. How often do you sit down to watch the news for an hour or watch your favorite show for two, three, four, five hours over the time? Or how many times you’re just not being efficient kind of like twiddling your thumbs and finding yourself just walking around your house aimlessly?

Let’s just say just for this example you’re doing four hours. Now, four hours every day for a workweek, that’s 20 hours in a workweek. Let’s say that you’re making $20 an hour. Now, I know most of you are high achievers and you’re people that are becoming the author of your own story or maybe you’re already an author of your own story and you listen to this just to keep yourself on track. Well, let’s just say for argument’s sake you’re making $20 an hour and we’re not going to count in opportunity cost. We’re not going to count on how if you’re younger and you make this money, you invest it, it’s going to be more than 20. Again, I know most of you are making a lot more than $20 an hour. Even that $20 an hour over 20 hours per week, you’re pretty much giving up $50,000 a year.

What do the billionaire and the beggar have in common? What do the young and the old have in common? What do you and I have in common? We all have 24 hours in a day and the difference is what we choose to do with each of those 24 hours. If you take ownership of your day if you take ownership of each hour in your day, what would it show you? Where would you be? How could you achieve more?

Have a great day and remember always go out and inspire someone by being the author of your own story.

Things Aren’t Always The Way They Look From The Outside

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6006540/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today I want to talk specifically about relationships. But this can be applied to the whole five to thrive. You see, in the last 24 hours, I’ve had the privilege of coaching two powerful men. These are both business owners, who are powerful in their own right. But both of them shared with me something that they were embarrassed about. They were struggling in the area of their relationships.

Now, this is common, but if you don’t have the conversations like I do on a daily basis, you wouldn’t know this. ‘Cause when you go on to Facebook or on to Instagram when you go out in public, everything looks good. All the other couples seem happy, right? Yeah sure, every once in a while you run into a couple fighting, but your friends on Facebook and people you went to high school with or college, or people just down the street, they have a perfect marriage or a perfect relationship. So don’t worry. Both these men confided in me that they actually hadn’t had it easy, and they said, “Doug, you might be shocked at this, but my marriage hasn’t always been easy.” And the other person wasn’t married, he said, “Doug, my relationship hasn’t always been easy.” I just laughed. I’m not laughing at you, all I’m saying is there is no such thing as an easy relationship. At least not one that I’m aware of.

You see, everybody that I’ve coached, all throughout the years, has had ups and downs in their relationships. Sure they don’t post them online. That would be crazy, right? You’d post all the downs and things like that. But it’s a process you work through. In a relationship, you have two people. Communication obviously is the key. But we’re not taught those tools all the time. We compare ourselves to other people and looking at that and we see that we’re without. Now you can do this with your body too, right? You can have, be in great shape and you can go online to Instagram and find a fitness model and be like, “Geez, I’m so out of shape.” And that is the land of comparison. And when you’re in that land of comparison, nothing works. You actually aren’t happy, because you’re always comparing what you have and who you are to other people. You don’t compare yourself to people that have less than you. That’s just not human nature, right? Even if you are a billionaire, you compare yourself to somebody who has $10 billion and you’re thinking, “Geez, I just don’t have enough. I’m not successful enough.”

Even if you have seemingly a perfect relationship, you go online and you’re like, “Geez, Doug and his wife are always traveling. Doug and his wife live this great life. He’s able to spend time with his kids and do all these things.” Well, that’s true, but there’s also a lot of work behind the scenes. My wife and I consistently work on our relationship. I’m consistently working on bettering my business. I hire coaches. I’m constantly reading to better myself so that I can keep improving. Now, if you were to compare yourself to me from the outside, sure everything looks great. And everything actually is. But the truth of the matter is, if I was just putting stuff on Facebook, I’d try to be as real as possible, but I always put all the dirt. And most people never do. Right? And that’s where it comes up.

So these two gentlemen had successful lives, from the outside. They also thought they were the only men who had trouble and tribulation in their relationships. Now if you’re listening to this and you’re married, you’re probably laughing. Or maybe you’re thinking, “Wow, I thought I was the only one.” Well, guess what? You’re not. In the land of comparison, there can only be unhappiness. ‘Cause you’re comparing who you are what you have to other people. And that is just unachievable. And the truth is, you haven’t seen behind the curtain. You don’t know what’s going on in their lives. As a high-level coach, I’m able to dig deep and I’m able to see all the skeletons in the closet and the cobwebs behind the scenes, of highly successful people. And most of these people that I work with are very well known. You would know them by name if I mentioned them. So you’ve seen them on social media. You maybe have seen them on TV and in the media. But what you don’t know is what’s behind the curtain. And what is being seen?

So I’m gonna ask you today, in your five to thrive, where are you living in the land of comparison? Are you comparing yourself to how smart you are, how many degrees you may have in your mind, how many languages you speak? I’ve been caught up in that many, many times. Are you comparing yourself and your body, how fit you are, how athletic you are? I’ve been caught up in that many, many, many times, especially coming from a background in the fitness industry. How about in the area of your soul? Are you caught up in the fact that you just don’t have a lot of passion or you’re not practicing your religious beliefs correctly or as well as somebody else? Or how about in the area of relationships? If you’re married or dating or do you compare your relationship to other peoples? I certainly did early on. And all I can tell you is that’s a dead end. It doesn’t lead anywhere positive.

What about in the area of business? Are you comparing yourself as a business owner to other business owners that are out there? Well, I can also tell you, as someone who coaches business owners, things aren’t always the way they seem. That brand new car probably is leased, and most likely they don’t have the money to pay for it and they’re stressing from day to day. Now, this isn’t everybody, but just one example that I can leave you with.

So what I want you to do is write your five to thrive and write down what areas of your life you’re comparing yourself to. And then cross it out, ’cause you realize that you can’t compare yourself to anyone else. This is your journey. You’re the author of your own story. Now if you have questions and you want to know if things are normal, reach out to a trusted advisor and talk to them. If you talk to a coach, someone like myself, who actually talks to people on a daily basis, on a regular basis, you’ll know what the norms are or what is acceptable in certain areas. And what’s acceptable for you is the most important part.

So just remember as you go out through your day and you’re on Facebook or social media or just driving around in your neighborhood, things aren’t always as they appear. And don’t think that you can walk for a minute in someone else’s shoes and compare what that feeling is like and what that journey and that path is like. I certainly don’t know your journey, nor you know mine or anybody else’s. That’s all I have for you today. Go out and have an amazing day and inspire somebody else by living the author of your own story lifestyle.

Taking Your Dreams Off The Shelf And Making Them A Reality

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6104977/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

We all have dreams, and going on the Author of Your Own Story route, many of us have big, big dreams. A lot of times, these dreams have been in the back of our minds for many years. In fact, you may even have a vision board or something else that has your dreams on it. Now let me ask you this, is there a dream or a goal or whatever you wanna call it that you’ve had that you hope to hit, but every year you just keep reinstating that goal?

This is common with New Year’s resolutions. Very few people actually achieve their goals or stick to them. And most people set the same New Year’s resolution year after year, after year, after year, after year, with no real hope of actually hitting their goals. Why? That’s because often times we put this goal or this dream up on a shelf. It’s up there and it starts to collect dust.

We don’t actually put it in our forefront of our mind. We might even think about the how’s, “How am I gonna get to this goal and come up with an engineered plan?” But what we’re not receptive to is actually getting in and acting as if we’ve achieved that goal already. Now, this is common in sports psychology.

You probably have heard the story before that they’ve done tests where they’ve actually had basketball players go in and shoot free throws for an hour a day. Then they had some people actually do nothing, and then they had the third group just sit in the chair and mentally practice the perfect free throw for an hour a day as well.

Now, the difference between the person who actually thought about doing the free throws versus the person actually doing them every day was very, very small. Now the person who obviously didn’t do anything didn’t improve at all. In fact, they actually decreased their performance whereas the other two actually thinking about it, thinking about the action as if you’ve done it successfully versus actually practicing it, almost had the same affect so there as a direct correlation there.

That’s the same with your goals and your dreams. So, for example, if you are dreaming of having your first home and buying a home, and maybe you want a home that’s gonna be, I’ll just say $700,000 and that’s out of your range right now mentally. What you wanna do is start creating pictures, images of that dream home you want. You need to know how much the mortgage is, how much the down payment is, what neighborhood you wanna do. I’d also suggest contacting a realtor or just going onto sites like Zillow or other sites like Trulia and start going to open houses.

Be in the homes that are in that range or above so you get a sense of what it smells like, what it looks like, what it feels. You’re in that moment. And then what’s gonna happen is, you’re subconsciously gonna start to find that you’re gonna be gravitating towards things that are allowing you to achieve these goals.

Now, this is very similar to the analogy I’ve used before. Have you ever actually wanted a car and maybe it is a red Porsche and you don’t see them anywhere. Nobody’s got a red Porsche. You go to the dealer, you look at it, you love it, you’re gonna buy it and next thing you know, everywhere you’re going around town people have red Porsches. There’s another one, there’s another one.

This happened to me when I was billing my Sprinter Adventure Van. I wanted a four by four van and I didn’t see them anywhere. No one had Sprinters I thought. And then all of a sudden I bought one and I see them everywhere. Now, were there always Sprinters there? Absolutely, I just wasn’t triggered in my mind to be looking for that goal or looking for a Sprinter Van. It’s the same thing with the red Porsche or with a house.

Now, your goal could be weight loss. Your goal could be in your spirituality. Your goal could be in your business. What I want you to do is take those goals off the shelf. Just pick one, for now, dust it off, and then I want you to create a vision board in front of you of where you are, and now have pictures of this goal. And I want you to take it a step further. I want you to make this a reality for yourself.

So, don’t just think about it, although that’s key, I want you to step into it. So, using the house analogy again, I want you to actually go to these homes. Go to check them out. Maybe you want your own farm or a ranch. Go to ranches, go to farms. Find out how those people did it. Find out what it’s like to be there. Put yourself in that environment.

Now, this could be also with your business. Maybe you want to 10X growth. What business owner doesn’t want 10X their growth? And you’re $1 million business. Well, going form a $1 million business to a $10 million business is hugely different. It’s a big difference there. You have management issues, you have financial things to consider. What you wanna do is start surrounding yourself with people or business owners who are already at that 10X level. They’ve already done it.

That’s gonna put you in that mindset and it’s gonna open you up to possibilities. You’re gonna start to see a flood of possibilities coming your way over time, that you may not have thought of. So in your master plan you’ve architected, you can just throw that out the window because you don’t care. It’s really about the outcome. The outcome of getting to this goal that you have. Getting to this dream.

The same thing happens to be with being fit. If you’re overweight and you wanna lose weight, what you wanna do is put yourself in an environment with people that are actually losing weight. You go to the gym. You wanna start associating with people that already achieved your goal. That puts your mindset into, that is your new equilibrium. That is the new normal for you.

And studies have proven just with weight loss, that the more you surround yourself with people that are obese, you become obese. The same happens to do with fitness. So, birds of a feather, they flock together. This is what you wanna do with all of your goals. Same with relationships. If you want a healthy marriage or a relationship, surround yourself with other people who have healthy marriages and relationships. Dust these goals off, and really put them in the forefront.

You can also say, “Hey look, 2018 by the end of the year, I wanna be with this particular goal.” Well, I invite you to shorten and compact that. What if you can do it in two months? Has somebody done it? And if they have, open yourself up to that possibility. Open yourself up to that possibility of having that new home, having that dream relationship, diving into your spirituality. Whatever that means to you, and growing your business, 10Xing your business. What could that look like? Certainly people have done it and certainly, you can as well.

That’s it for me today. As always, go to authorofyourownstory.com where you can get the latest tips, tricks and techniques delivered right to your inbox each and every day. Getting Away From The Excuse Of Something Being Too Complex

I have the unique privilege of coaching a lot of business clients, and one is actually in a group, and they’re fitness professionals. Now, these are fitness professionals with over five years of experience in the fitness industry, and all of them own their own facility. They’re extremely intelligent individuals, but when it comes to their business, typical business operations, often time, they use the excuse of it being too complex, not enjoying it, or just not understanding.

I’ll hear things like, “Ah, Doug, I just don’t get it,” or, “I just don’t understand what this means,” or, “I don’t understand this whole marketing, analytics, Facebook, Google, Twitter, LinkedIn. All these things are just overwhelming., I don’t get it.” To them, I have to say, “BS.” Why is it BS, is because these are all smart people. They can tell you the bones in your body, the muscles, the insertions, the origins, flexion, extension, inversion, all of these complex physiological and anatomical terms. They know it, and they’ve learned it. Why? They like it. That’s the difference.

What they haven’t done is they’ve created, excuse me, what they have done is they’ve created a story. This is a story all of us fall into. There’s something. For me, it used to be finances and money. I just don’t get it. I don’t understand how these people are rich, how these people aren’t. It’s fake money. I just, for some reason, didn’t get it. I used that as a crutch for myself, an excuse not to manage my money in my early 20s. I used this as, “I don’t understand this”, but at the same time I was teaching at a high-level different exercise physiology, anatomy, marketing. All these other things that others would call ‘Complex’, but to me seem so simple. The reason is I had passion behind it and I took time to learn what these items were.

These fitness business owners, again, highly intelligent people, are using that same crutch. Don’t we all? Isn’t there an area in your life that you’re probably using as a crutch, something that’s too complex and you’re saying, “You know what, it’s too hard, it’s too complex”, and that’s the reason you’re not excelling or actually doing it. For this individual, I just explain to them. I say, “Do you know what a bicep is versus a brachioradialis?” They say, “Yeah Doug, of course, I do. I’m in the fitness industry. That’s a dumb question. I’m a professional.” I say, “Exactly”. That’s an anatomical term that the average person does not understand and couldn’t point out.

Same goes for marketing. You took time to learn this. You took time to learn the body because you cared. You knew you were going to help people. In order to help people and be really good at it and also to get the accolades that come with being an expert in the fitness industry, you need to know these things. They agreed. “Yeah, I do.” Now, as a business owner, it’s your duty to understand marketing. It’s your duty to understand your numbers. It’s your duty to understand finance. It’s not only your duty to yourself but your duty to your employees, to your family and also your customers to some degree. You owe it to them.

As a business owner, I think this is your responsibility. You need to know the whole game and understand it. Do you have to know everything? No. Absolutely not, but you have to know enough. You have to know enough and be able to push a button and bring an expert in, much like Henry Ford did on his assembly line. If he needed a question, he pushed a button and asked an expert. He knew enough to know if that expert knew what they were talking about.

As a business owner, if you have a large organization with thousands of employees, you can get away with that. As a solopreneur or a small business owner, you can’t. You need to know enough to be dangerous in each of these areas, but this also goes for you.

If you’re listening to this right now, which you are obviously, or watching me, there’s an area of your life I can almost guarantee that you’re using an excuse of it being too complex. I don’t understand. I just don’t get it. The reason you’re doing that is it’s easier to go that way and you probably don’t enjoy it. You don’t enjoy that subject matter. Aren’t there all kinds of things in our life that at one time seemed just overwhelming and super complicated, but once we dug in just a little bit, just a little bit around that curve, they became easy and intuitive and they came just … You can think of things even from childhood like riding a bike. No one just jumps on and it’s easy. You fall all the time. You mess up. You have training wheels. It takes a while. Now, after a while, you can just get on a bike and ride. You don’t even think about it.

The same is with my business. I just don’t think about it. I know my numbers. I know marketing. I know how to brand and innovation. I understand all of this. I know how to build a business. It’s just intuitive to me at this point in my life, but it wasn’t always like that. It’s something that I had to learn.

Finances are the same thing. It’s an area that I continue to study, understanding banking. The reason I study it is because it is my crutch. It’s something that I get to overcome to become a better man, a better human and to improve upon myself.

What I want you to do today is think about it. Think about these fitness business owners that I talk about that are, again, they’re extremely intelligent and how they, most of them have this excuse that they’re leaning on this crutch of an excuse saying, and especially in their marketing and their business development and growth that it’s too complex and they just don’t get it. How does that apply to you? How does that apply to me in my life?

I want to you do, is write in your journal, just like I’m about to do as soon as I get off of here. Write in the journal through your Five to Thrive, where are those crutches for you. Where, in your Five to Thrive, are you making an excuse? Is it in your mind that there’s a language that’s just too hard. You know what? Mandarin is just too hard for me to learn. Spanish is too hard for me. It’s too difficult. I’m too hold. What’s your excuse? Your body. Nutrition, is it paleo? I just don’t get it. I don’t understand how you can do metabolic training or even what metabolic training means. You have one body, you should know some of the basics. Is it in the area of your soul, your religion? Have you strayed away from your religion because it’s too complex or have you gone away or do you understand? Are you saying all Christians are bad or all Muslims are bad because you really just don’t get it, or maybe meditation?

I hear this a lot about meditation. I was one of these people that wouldn’t meditate because it’s just not for me. My mind goes everywhere until I learned that’s kind of the reason you meditate. You need to just push through that little barrier.

Or, is it in your relationships? How often do all of us hear from the opposite sex stuff like, “I don’t understand women? I don’t understand men.”, or whatever. Really, there’s not a lot to understand. Relationships are dynamic and there are some very simple basic things that you can learn to do and they’re very teachable. Get a relationship coach or grab some books.

Or, is it your business? Do you not know your numbers? What’s your rent? Do you know? If I asked you right now, “What’s your rent?”, what is it? If you’re a business owner, how much is your payroll? How much do you pay in taxes on average? What are your quarterlies? These are numbers you should know. What’s your profit? What’s your loss? If I ask you these statements on your balance sheet, where are you today? Are you profitable? Most business owners, even successful business owners don’t know a lot of these common questions. That’s because they use it as a crutch. It’s just too complex and I’m just really good at what I do, but you’re not being a good steward of your own journey and your own story if you don’t know these answers.

Where does it fall for you? In your Five to Thrive, where are you making excuses? I’m going to be doing the same thing because you can always peel back that onion a little bit deeper. If, for example, for me, finances come up again, if that’s where I’m looking at, because I know there are certain things with finances I just don’t quite get. Right now, I understand blockchain programming. I’ve learned about that, but there are certain applications with blockchain I don’t quite get. It’s pretty complex, so I think I’m going to push myself over the edge and really learn it, not because I’m ever going to anything with it, but it just allows you just that little extra edge. You’re pushing yourself just like if you can do 10 pushups, but you do 11 rather than 8, it’s a big difference for you in the longterm in just your mental game and your physical game.

That’s what I’ll be doing. I’m going to ask you to do the same thing right now. I would really love to hear from you. Reach out to me, let me know what it is for you so I don’t feel alone on this journey. I’m always improving myself and always working on bettering my game as well as pushing my clients. That’s why I think of you, this community. Author of your own story. You’re here right now because you want to better yourself and I love you for that. I really, I get it and I understand and respect the journey that you’re on.

That’s it for me today. As always, I’m going to encourage you one, share this with somebody. Share it because they’re going to get something out of this. It’s going to be totally different than what you’re getting out of it and you might be giving it to them at that right time. I hear from so many of you that I’ve never met before that how just one of these daily growth hacks hit you at the right time, the right moment in your life and allowed you to, when you’re going left to shift to right, going right down that different direction and it’s made all the difference. That makes me feel so great, but just imagine sharing this with somebody else that you can make that change for.

Then, I’m also going to ask you to make sure you sign up for the newsletter. Sign up for the newsletter so you can get the tips and tricks. I get a lot of emails asking questions.
