Revisit: Self-Appreciation

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5927064/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Self-appreciation is also called self-love. Often times, when working with a client, this is something that I see missing. We all think “I love myself, I like myself, that’s all good, Doug.” But I can tell you right now, I have a lot of clients that pay me a lot of money to help them break through barriers to up-level their lives. The reason this works is that I am able to look past them and see the love or missing elements within themselves. Often times, the first things I have them do, is really assess their level of self-appreciation. Often times if you’re listening to this, you’re someone like me, someone that really likes personal development. Developing one’s self, and that’s great, but your personal development project needs to be smaller than your self-appreciation project.

I encourage you to have a self-appreciation project. What do I mean? What I mean is having an actual system of the project where you’re making sure you’re appreciating yourself. It’s not only yourself today, but also forgiving yourself from the past. That could be something as simple as “I didn’t go running this morning”, and allowing yourself grace and forgiveness. We tend to beat ourselves up over and over again. We beat ourselves up so much that there is no way we would do that to another person who is our friend. Isn’t that crazy? We’re the one person we spend the most time with, and yet we expect ourselves to grow, but we are not appreciating ourselves.

Now, if you’re married and you have a spouse, you know that if you’re not appreciating your spouse, they’re not going to stick around for very long. That’s true for yourself. You have to appreciate not only your current self, but also your former self, and give that forgiveness. Today, I’m going to encourage you to go into your journal, look back, and look at your self-improvement and self-appreciation. Have more depth and more time dedicated to each. Develop your own self-appreciation project. That could be as simple as giving yourself gratitude 5 times a day. Being grateful for things that you’ve done in the past: wins, accomplishment, and things you’re doing now.

You’re listening to this podcast. You’re making sure you up-level your life. Most people don’t do this. This makes you the top 1% of the world. Give yourself credit. Be here every day. Make your self-appreciation project bigger than your personal development project. I can guarantee you to wins in all areas of your life: business, relationships, body, mind, spirit.

Take care of yourself. Love each other, but also make sure to love yourself.

That’s it for today. Of course, always go to www.authorofyourownstory.com where we expand on these topics and get into deeper dives, as well as email a daily tip or trick right into your inbox to uplevel your five to thrive: mind, body, soul, relationships, and business.

Revisit: Being Right vs Being Happy

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5923090/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I was at the gym this morning working out and there were two guys talking. One guy turned to his friend and started correcting his form. Now, I had just met these guys a few days earlier and the instinct to jump in and tell him that his advice was wrong, was really high in me. I mean, I really had to fight it.

You see, I’ve spent over two decades in the fitness field and acquired over 18 degrees and certifications and have been teaching fitness to people, as well as, to fitness professionals for a very long time. That innate nature inside of me just to correct him and give him the right information was going so strong and it made me start to think, “What is the outcome that I want?”

You see, I just met these guys and they were both really nice. I could’ve stepped in and said, “Hey look, the advice you’re giving is really bad.” This person might actually even hurt themselves and embarrassed his friend. I could tell that he was actually really enjoying helping his buddy out and really what I would’ve done is just push them both away.

I sat back and relaxed and just simply had conversations with them. What this made me realize is as little as three years ago my need to be right was so strong within me that I actually shattered relationships around me. I chose a black versus white scenario where there was no gray. I did this in relationships, friendships, but also in my marriage. Now it could’ve been doing the dishes. You see, I was brought up a certain way that when you did dishes you had them so sparkling clean even before you put them in the dishwasher and I would correct my wife.

I would go over and say, “No, no, you’re not doing this right,” and talk to her. Taking out the trash, “No, no, no, we actually we’re going to sort it a certain way.” There was my way, the right way in my relationships. What I found is it caused so much strife between my wife and I, between my friendships.

I constantly felt that I needed to correct people. This could’ve been on news stories, politics when I’d hear people disseminating information that was just blatantly incorrect. See, I had a shift. I had a shift where I decided, “What is my outcome in the situation?” In a conversation, I don’t have to be right and often times I probably am not. There’s a gray area. If it’s a relationship conversation, I can choose to be happy. Sit back, relaxed, and have that conversation.

Now I see this a lot within my own family when they’re talking about politics. You have people on the left and you have people on the right. Sometimes they just don’t agree, and they end up really driving each other apart, and not enjoying each other. In fact, disliking the other person based on opposing views.

The reason that is, is because their view is right. The other person is wrong. When you make somebody else wrong, you’re just pushing them away. You’re saying, “You are not enough. You are not good enough for me. I am right, you are wrong.” Now, I’m going to give you the opportunity here or the paradigm shift that you have the possibility of choosing to be happy in these situations.

Don’t be like the old Doug creating strife, creating this situation where you have to be right and it’s so hard to bite your tongue. When really you could have this outcome of this amazing relationship with somebody and actually open yourself up to learn another point of view. Fast forward to today, I actually seek out people with opposing points of view so I can learn more, because I realize how much it was so important for me to be right, rather than just being happy.

I can tell you from my own experience in relationships when I’ve made this shift from wanting to be right, versus, wanting to be happy, it has made me such a happier person. It’s opened me up to new relationships and my relationship with my wife has never been better.

I’m going to ask you this today, where across your five to thrive, but especially in your relationships are you striving to be right? Are you striving to be right with a coworker? Are you striving to be right with a friend? Are you striving to be right about politics? Is it about sporting events? “My team’s better than yours.” Where are you stuck in the black and white situation of being right, versus, being happy? Where is this creating unhappiness in your life?

Once you have that down, I’m going to ask you to do one more thing and that takes action right now. Take action in this moment of clarity to choose happiness. Look, you have the right to be the author of your own story and that starts with creating your story in the moment, in the moment now.

Love Where You Workfrom

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5918724/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I’m in New Hampshire visiting family, and when I’m in New Hampshire, I really need a place to work. A place where I can do my Facebook Lives, my coaching sessions, and just really catch up and unwind. I found this really cool little coffee shop. Now it’s in the middle of a downtown depressed town, and I’m filming this daily growth hack right there from my car because it’s so loud outside with all the trucks outside. But this little place is a gem.

It’s bright pink inside. It’s got a stage. It had fantastic coffee and a great selection of teas, and you never would have guessed it was here. Now the way I found this is using an app that I’ve used many, many times before. If you’re a digital nomad or you’re on your way to living the author of your own story lifestyle where you want to work from everywhere, and you just want to find a cool place to work from, I highly recommend this tip. Check out the Work From App.

Now you can go to the website WorkFrom.co to actually access the app. They have it both for Android and the iPhone. Now I have no affiliation with this company or this app, although I wish I did. I really, really enjoyed it. It allowed me to find this little gem, and it shows me that it has outlets so I know I can stay a little longer if I want to. Also, it tells me about the connection speed. Now the connection speeds were off, but this is still a great little find.

So if you are working from the road, or you’re a digital nomad, or you’re entering that lifestyle, and you’re working for a cool, hip place to work from check out the WorkFrom.co app, and you want to check that out today. That’s it for me today. Just a quick tip as I’m on the road, but I hope you’re doing great, and I hope you’re living the author of your own story lifestyle. As always go to AuthorOfYourOwnStory.com where you can get more tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your email inbox. That’s it. Have a great day, and I’ll talk to you later!

Expecting Results Without Putting In The Work

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5914702/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, this is a reader’s question or a listener’s question that was sent to me just the other day. Now, here I’m still in Vermont in this beautiful forest if you’re watching this, and if you’re listening to this, just imagine an idyllic kind of country farm with hundreds of acres. It just amazing. When I got this email, it actually shocked me because it was such a contrast to the experience I was having. Now, what the listener said, they said, “Doug, I’m in my 30s, and I’ve been putting in my time, and I’m wondering because I have a great idea, how you actually get financing to get a business off the ground?”

Now, this is a great question. However, after a little digging what I found out is they didn’t really have a business idea. What they wanted was financing to be able to start their own business so they could have the lifestyle, the ability to travel and do the things that they wanted to do. After a little bit of questioning back and forth via email, what I found was that this person hasn’t put in the work. They just happened to be in their 30s and want, and expect, an amazing life that they can actually live.

Now, I’m one to say that you should expect to have an amazing life. You should want, or desire, to have all the things that life has to offer; however, you’ve got to put in the work. To say that money’s not available, that money isn’t out there to start a dream, or a business, is asinine, because the truth is, there’s plenty of money for everybody. There’s plenty of investors that are out there. They just can’t find people with a good idea. That’s the biggest thing, right?

If you put in your work, you put in your time in your 20s, let’s say, and some of you it’s even younger, or older. There’s not a time limit, but it’s putting in the work, expanding your knowledge, and expanding your ability to show a proven track record from where you started to where you can actually finish something is key. Now, if you’re just starting out on your journey to the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle, don’t worry. This is something you can project to the future, and I hope by listening to these daily growth hacks this actually compacts time for you, so you can actually leapfrog years ahead.

Now, if you’re expecting all of a sudden, “Hey, Doug, there’s no money out there. I have business ideas but no one’s willing to give me money,” I’m gonna tell you right now that either your business ideas just aren’t good, or you’re not proven yet. You’re not proven enough that investors are willing to take that leap, that risk with you, right now. That’s okay, but this means you need to get that experience. Do your work and hustle. This means taking care of your inner self, but also taking care of the external. Getting skills that allow you to live the life that you want to. If you want to be able to travel, then you’re looking at a digital lifestyle. You’re not looking at a brick and mortar business. You’re looking at some business that you can run remotely, or at least be able to take vacations with.

Now, what I want to ask you today is, “Where in your Five to Thrive, your mind, body, soul, relationships, and business are you expecting results but not putting in the work? Where are you expecting it? Is it in your mind you’re expecting to all of a sudden know about history? We had a conversation about history the other day. Know about history but not read about history, or not watch Ken Burns’ documentaries? Where in your body are you expecting to lose body fat, but you’re eating cookies all day, or drinking beer throughout the day? Where in your relationships are you expecting someone to love you, yet you’re not loving yourself?

Where in your business are you expecting to make six figures, or seven, or some of you eight and nine figures, but yet you’re not putting in the work? You’re not branding yourself. You’re not innovating. You’re not marketing. You’re not actually taking care of your clients. What I want you to do is grab your journal, go through your Five to Thrive and write these down. Where are you expecting results but not putting in the work?

Then, what I want you to do is grab your calendar and write the next step you can do, the most immediate step right now that you can do to actually take a step forward to getting those results and doing the work. That’s all from me today. Remember, go over to authorofyourownstory.com where you can get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your email inbox, so just like myself you can get new insights delivered to you every single day to help you become the Author of Your Own Story. Have a great day.

Remind Yourself

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5911680/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

We’ve just got done walking in the woods, and this is absolutely breathtaking. An amazing experience here, especially in the fall when it should be snowing and here we are in a sunny day. And one of the things it reminded me of because I got an email this morning, and the email said to me what my purpose was. Why was I here? What was I to focus on in my life over these next years coming up for my family, but also for my personal self so I can continue to be on the path of growth? What happened was, and the hack that I’m going to give you is I wrote that email to myself, and each time that email comes in my inbox because probably like you, I spent a lot of time on email, I get that message, open it up, and I read it to myself each time.

Then I use boomerang for Gmail. So boomerang is an app you can get for Gmail and allows you to send an email to boomerang back to you at a later time. So I often do this with little tidbits that I want to remind myself of. These little things that make sure I stay on the path, the path that I want to go on because it’s so easy in these days to look at shiny new objects or if you’re like me you could offer business options often. I get offered to become an advisor or to work on another business or a business idea, and it’s easy for me to get off track. So these emails remind me of what my mission is, what my purpose is.

So here I am in this beautiful New England farm, and what it reminded me to have is actually that what I want to do is stay present. Stay present when I’m with my family, when I’m with my friends when I’m with loved ones. So I actually have some work that I was planning on doing until I got this email and I just shut my laptop down and went back to hanging out and here I was able to hike in the beautiful woods and enjoy the time with the people that I love.

So I want to remind you of this. What are a few things that you could use reminders of? Almost like if you had someone following you around just reminding you of little things. How great you are. Things that you really want to keep in perspective. Now, use your email as a possible source for yourself. Use your email, set maybe boomerang or one of the other apps to set that email to come back to you at set intervals.

Now for this particular email, I have it set to come back to me every two weeks and sometimes I switch it up, so I don’t expect it because I forget until the email lands in my inbox, and I read it and that reminds me to stay the course, that reminds me of what my purpose is and how I can do better in this world, and I can become the author of my own story.

So today that’s a quick tip. All I want you to do is grab your journal, write your five to thrive, and look at each of those. Of what area in your five to thrive, in particular, just pick one, do you want reminders? Do you wish you had someone following you around to remind you on a daily, an hourly, a weekly, or monthly basis to keep you on track so you can get to your goals a little faster? Once you have that, set a minder in your email. Set a reminder in your email to come back to you. Send yourself an email, hit the reminder, and you may be like me, two weeks it comes back to you and just reminds you to stay the course.

Now, of course, you can always change it, delete it if you change the direction you want to go in your life, but most likely these are principles that you want to follow.

That’s it for me today. Remember to go out and be the Author of Your Own Story.

What Lies Beneath the Surface

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5909360/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Just yesterday, I was invited to be on a seminar. It was a virtual seminar called The Virtual Summit. I was the expert in marketing, but the conversation took a turn. See, the host asked me a question. They asked me, “Hey, Doug, there’s all these people that are trying to run online businesses and grow them exponentially.” Which is a big word to use when you talk about business. But they’re trying to grow their businesses and while they’re doing that, they’re worried about social media.

They don’t want to post on their own social media pages. Now, you might be wondering, what does this have to do with the daily growth hack if I’m not in a business that’s online? Well, it has everything to do with it, because what I told him, was the reason that people aren’t actually posting on their own personal accounts, is they’re worried what others will think of them.

Now, when I told this to the moderator, he was actually shocked. He was like, “Oh, man, you’re totally right.” The reason is, I see this all the time. Now, I see with my coaching clients when I do deep dives into their businesses, and into their lives. Now, I get the benefit of doing this in a very intimate setting and I’ve been doing it for a very, very long time. Now, but I also see this with my marketing clients.

I own two agencies. Within those agencies, we often get asked questions from clients about how they can brand themselves or market themselves to a higher level. Yet, they’re not willing to take the steps necessary to put themselves out there, right? They’re not willing to post on their own personal page. What I’ll hear things like, “Well, Doug, I’m just going to post on a business page and that way I can post about this side hustle that I have.” Or, “I’m going to post about what my real dream is. My real dream is to coach men or to mentor women,” or to whatever it may be for that person. But they only want to post on a business page.

Well, I can tell you that I’ve tested recently, and business engagements on social media, Facebook, in particular, has gone down by over 400%. That’s not a good strategy. But really what I want to know is, why aren’t you putting yourself out there? Now, I’ll use social media as an example for this daily growth hack. Why aren’t you posting your true passions or what you’re really doing on social media? The reason that is, is fear, right?

You’re afraid what some people will think about you. You’re afraid that some people will make fun of you if you fail. Or maybe you’re afraid that you’re an imposter and you have imposter syndrome. What I will relate to you that, if that strikes a chord with you, is it didn’t really kinda fake it ’til you make it, you would just stay the same. We all do it. That’s okay.

By putting yourself out there, that gives you the leverage and the opportunity to grow. Now, this doesn’t have to be just social media. How many people are just not going to the gym because they’re scared what other people think of them? Or, how many of you are not saying something, or having that conversation in a relationship because you’re worried what the other person will think. Or, you’re worried what the people around you will think.

Maybe you’re still in a relationship that’s not serving you, and you’re worried that your friends, your family will think, “Ah, I can’t believe you got out of that relationship. What are you doing? That person’s amazing.” They don’t know what’s inside of you.

But the truth of this whole story is, nobody cares. Nobody cares about what I’m doing or what you’re doing, right? Because they are concerned with what they’re doing at the moment. Right here as I film these daily growth hacks, I film on video. I walk into my office, and if you’re listening to this on audio, you could imagine I walk into my home office, I flip on the camera, and I talk about my experiences and what’s going on for me. The way I get leverage in that is because I’m coaching clients. I’m coaching people on a daily basis and helping them overcome their hurdles.

That’s what I want to do for you. That’s why I produce these. Now, I could easily make fun of myself and I’ve talked about these in other daily growth hacks, where the lighting’s not good, or the background’s not good, or I’d been you all night with my infant, or whatever it may be. These are all stories. The truth of the matter is, most of you haven’t even thought about anything that I’m doing if you’re watching this or my voice while you’re listening to this.

You’re thinking about yourself. That’s great. Knowing that is the spotlight affect. And then go back to a previous daily growth hack, right here where we talk about the spotlight affect, and that was when we talk about the spotlight is actually on you, or you think it is, but it’s only on you internally, right? The spotlight is only on you in the sense that you are the only one worried about what you’re doing. Nobody else is.

I ask you, why are you not putting yourself out there? Why are you not putting yourself out there on social media or putting yourself out there on business, taking risks? Really going after what you want to, because you’re worried what other people think. Again, the truth is, most people don’t care. Those that do care and those that are putting you down, they’re trying to pull you down because they’re scared about what they’re not doing.

Remember, there are two ways of having the biggest building in town. One way is to build it up with integrity and with hard work, so you have the biggest building. The second way is to burn everybody else’s down. A lot of you have friends and family that are burning buildings around them. They’re trying to take you down because they’re scared because you’re going up and becoming the author of your own story. They’re scared you’re going to leave them. Or, they’re scared that, you know, by you becoming the author of your own story, you’re showing them what they’re not doing.

When I talk about what lies below the surface, and that’s the surface of your excuses. What really is happening? If you’re not going to the gym because you’re worried people are going to look at you funny, what really is happening there, right? What are you really worried about? What’s really the worst thing that’s going to happen? If you’re not putting yourself out there on social media and I can tell you at least 30 people that I know that are listening to this daily growth hack on a regular basis, have had business ideas that you’ve had, for over a year, yet you haven’t done anything to move them forward.

I’m here with a loving calling you out of saying, you’ve got to push forward. Put it out there. People will jump on your passion. They’ll look forward to helping you out. Worst case scenario, if you try something. You fail, you dust yourself off, you learn from that experience, and you continue to grow. The best part, if you’re being yourself, you’re living your life and is the author of your own story and not somebody else’s.

Here’s another news fact for you. People don’t care what you’re doing, in fact, the stories that you probably created about what other people think of you, aren’t probably true, right? They may not even exist. I encourage you to clear those up as well. But that’s a whole nother conversation. Right now, what I want you to do is, grab your journal. Write out your Five to Thrive. What I want you to do is, write out one thing in each of those areas, and we all have them, why you’re not moving forward.

Now, what I want you to do once you’ve done that, right? That’s the first step. Do the work. Write those down. And then what really lies beneath that? What are you worried about? What is scaring you? What is stopping you from stepping into your own power and actually doing those things that you love? Why are you worried about what other people think? Is this in a relationship or is this in a business idea, right? Do you have a business idea you want to run with or a business you want to start?

Whatever it is, write it down and then write down the worst things you can think of. Now, what I want you to do is a bonus for you, is when you think about putting this out there into the world … Let’s just imagine I’m going to use Facebook or LinkedIn, whatever you use on social media, but imagine putting this idea or thought into the world and putting it out there. I want you to think right away if you did, who were the first three people that come to your mind, that you’re worried that they’re going to say something. Like, “I can’t believe you’re doing this.”

Who are those people? Now, what I want you to do is talk to those people. Talk to them about what you want to do and understand their point of view. Step into your uncomfortability, step outside of your comfort zone, and that’s where growth happens. This is what’s going to allow you to grow and become the author of your own story.

That’s it for me today. Remember, go to authorofyourownstory.com, where you get more tips, tricks, and insights and deeper dives into these. Get Rid of Your Excuses

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5905078/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, I’m shooting this Daily Growth Hack for you because I’m getting a lot of questions about this. And the questions aren’t about excuses, they’re about actually pushing forward and how to do it. And people that have actually gone through and set up their 30 or 90-day plans, but haven’t done the work necessary. And so, what I wanna remind you is a story that you’ve all heard before, and that’s about a Spanish explorer Cortes, and when he landed in Veracruz. One of the first things that he did is he told his men, “You can either fight, or you can die,” and he burned the ships. Now, this eliminated the third option, right? They could have fought and won, they could have died, or they could have got back on those ships and headed back to Spain. But by eliminating one of those excuses, those men fought and they fought very hard. And of course, you know the end of this story, they actually won.

So what I want you to do in this very short Daily Growth Hack, is look at your Five to Thrive. Look at your goals that you have; we have a few more months in the year if you’re listening to this … Depending on when you actually pick up your Daily Growth Hacks. And I wanna look at the end of the year and see how close you are to actually hitting those goals. Now, what I want you to look is, what are your excuses for not hitting those goals? Then I want you to burn the ships. Look at your excuses for not hitting your goals. Why aren’t you at the weight you wanna be? Why aren’t you as strong as you wanna be? Why aren’t you meditating? Why isn’t your business bringing home the gross, the net and your own take-home pay that you deserve? Why isn’t your relationship a 10 out of 10? What’s going on there, and what are your excuses?

And then what I want you to do, is look at that journal and scratch it out, and burn your ships. It’s time to get to work everyone; this is your life, and I want you to have the best you possibly can. Put those excuses in front of you, and then put the real reasons and the why you’re going to achieve them. And that way you know that every time you step up against that wall of that excuse, you have the power to push through, go over, go around, dig under, whatever you need to do to get it done. It’s time to burn the boats. This is your life, you’ve got one life to live, make it an epic one.

Revisit: Categories of Improvement

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5902580/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

So, what are categories of improvement? Categories of improvement is just another way of talking about how to categorize your life and look at where you want it to go. So, we’re going to break your life down into two main sections.

We’re calling them containers here. We have personal and then we have business.

What I want you to do is take out two separate sheets of paper. On the top of one, write personal and then I want you to list all the roles that you play. So, I think it’s Stephen Covey who does this from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I got this from Tony Robbins, this exact exercise, and modified it in my own way.

So, for personal what I want you to think about are all those roles you serve personally. Whether it be as a father, mother, son, husband, wife, friend, whatever it may be. Look at all those areas: areas of finance, for example. I like looking at the 5 to thrive right away, it’s quick and it’s easy. Again, that’s mind, body, soul, relationships, business and what other categories you personally might have. Again, maybe it’s a father as well.

Then, we’re also going to take on the next sheet of paper, once you wrote those down, and do the same thing with our business.

What are areas of improvement within your business?

Now that could be obviously in every area of business you have –  marketing, finance, logistics, or operations. What are the things that you need to be in your business, or whatever business you’re pursuing, even if you’re a student? If you’re currently in between positions, think about what are those areas that you’ll need to develop consistently to get where you want to go.

So let me give you an example of what mine are to hopefully help you a little bit. First, we’re going to have what that list is and then next to that list we’re going to write down what the ultimate goal or vision is. So, for each actual container and each category of improvement, let’s say it’s in the area of finance in my personal life, I’m going to write down what the ultimate goal and vision is for that. Something that’s going to be motivational for me.

Now, don’t write the word finance, write something that’s going to motivate you. This is something that’s supposed to pump you up a little bit. So if you’ve written down husband, like I did, I took out the word husband, erased it, and wrote down “world’s best husband”. So do something that actually lights you up.

Here’s mine:

In my personal area I have financial wizard and master of leverage.

What’s my ultimate goal and vision there?

I don’t have to worry about money, I can buy my wife anything that she wants, we can give gifts to people with reckless abandon and cost is just never an issue.

In my personal category, next one down I have: emotional athlete.

What’s my ultimate goal and vision there?

I’m able to dive deep into my emotional states, get real, get raw, and also control my state at any time powerfully. I’m fully in control of my emotions.

Another category, i’m just going to list them down without using the ultimate goal and vision because I think you get the point there.

Challenge the Rules

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5896569/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, according to the ancient prophecy, whoever could untie the Gordian Knot was destined to become King of Asia. Now, people failed and tried this over years, and came from all over the world to untie this knot, but nobody could do it. Then, Alexander the Great tried, and he tried many times himself. Finally, he decided, “I’ll make my own rules.” He pulled out his sword and slashed the knot, thus untying it. Now, as fate would have it, he took over all of Asia.

I’m gonna ask you this question, where are you not challenging the rules? Where are you looking at your own knot-tying rules that somebody else created or have not really been explained, and you just made them up. Where in your Five to Thrive are you not looking at what rules you can challenge. Where in your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, your business, what rules do you have, and rules that you’ve created that you actually need to sit down and challenge.

Here’s what I’m gonna ask you to do, write out your Five to Thrive and write out rules that you have. Rules for your body, rules for your mind, your soul, your relationships, and your business, and then ask yourself, How can you challenge those rules? Where did those rules come from? Often times we hear something, or we make things up ourselves. I was just having a conversation with a business owner, and they were talking about a story they had about another person and how this other person was shutting them out, didn’t like them, all of these things, but never actually talked to the other business owner. They created this story on their own.

What I’m asking you to do is, where have you created these stories, or where have you created these rules, rules around relationships? Maybe you’re saying, “My husband, or my wife, should be doing this, should be doing that.” I want to ask you, where’d you get those from? Is that just the way your parents were, and how’s your parents’ relationship? Is that really what you want? In business, maybe it’s business, and I’ve heard business owners say, “People should just know I’m the best, and they should just come to me.” Well, what kind of rule is that? That’s a weird rule. If you challenge that what would your business look like?

In this short clip, I just want you to know, what are your rules that you’re going through, and rules can you challenge? That’s it for me today. Revisit: Listening to Words

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5892386/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

What do I mean by listening to words? Well, we got a lot of feedback from our Growth Hack about listening to audiobooks at two or three times speed. Got a lot of information and I love hearing from you, so thank you.

One of the questions I got was, “Doug, I don’t have the audiobooks. A lot of the books that I enjoy reading either come in hardcover or Kindle versions. What do I do then?”

Well you have a couple options and the one that I’m going to share with you today is simply by taking out your Kindle, Amazon has what’s called Whispersync. Whispersync has a really unique feature. Now, most audiobooks now have this. You can either buy it separately, but what I found is that it actually is included in most books. Now Whispersync allows you, at the bottom of your Kindle, to select the audio version.

Now this is usually for visually impaired and it’s not quite as good as having an author or a professional reader, but it works really well. With Whispersync, you can set the audio to be slower than one-time speed, but you can also go up to three times speed and even four in some situations, depending on the software you’re using. Now I find Whispersync not to be as good again as the author because of the clarity, the pronunciation isn’t as good and the flow of the words. You’re having a computer reading the words one by one to you. For me, it’s usually about two to two and a half times speed is my speed spot, but you may find it to be different for you.

What you’re able to do then is download books that aren’t quite ready for audio format, that may be on a Kindle or another device or an e-reader. Utilizing the Whispersync or accessibility functions, like the iPhone has, you can actually go to iPhone and set your accessibility reader functions so that it’s reading for someone who is visually impaired and the iPhone will actually read the text for you. Again, it’s not as good as the audiobook, but give it a try.

This will allow you to digest books and content at a much faster rate and thus letting you go one step closer to being the author of your own story.

That’s it for me today. I’ll see you tomorrow.
