The Common Issues in Relationships

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6238719/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I just left a client’s business right now where I sat down with him in one of his key employees. And they have been going back and forth on a job description and a role for this key employee for over six months. Now, I was privy to the email exchanges and a lot of the communication that they were having. What they asked me to do is come in today and sit down and help them assess the meeting and really come to a clear and concise decision on where they want to go.

Now, their decisions were multifaceted. They were either going to split the sheets and go their separate ways, but again, this is a key employee. Both of them really appreciated and honored and respected each other, but they just weren’t seeing eye to eye. And again, this should have been a decision that happened in a day, maybe two, but yet it took them over six months.

When sitting down, I started the conversation what I’m going to share with you. In most relationships, business and personal, there are at least two common factors that cause problems, frustrations, anger, anxiety. One is unexpected or uncommunicated expectations. That’s when I have an expectation of you, but I haven’t told you about it. I expect you to follow up with sales calls within four hours, but I never told you that. I expect you to do your dishes, but I never told you that. I expect you to take out the trash, but I never told you that. You had to get mad when you don’t do it.

The second thing is thwarted communication, so I’m not communicating to you at all. And that’s what was happening to these two people, the business owner, and his key employee. They weren’t communicating properly. Now, they were sending emails back and forth, but what really wasn’t happening is they weren’t coming to an agreement. And all I simply did was sit in front of them and said, “Is this clear to you? What are you hearing?” They would repeat it back. “Is that what you thought?” They would say, yes or no. “Actually, I thought it was something a little different.”

After an hour sitting down, they came to an agreement where they were actually seeing eye to eye and developed a process for this. And the frustration you could actually palpably feel it leaving the actual meeting. And all it was, was two simple techniques. One is clear expectations. You have to be crystal clear in your expectations. If you’re not communicating something you’re expecting of somebody, you can’t expect them to do it. They just don’t know. Their lens of life in the world is different than yours. They have a different expectation. They have different parents than you did. You have to clearly set expectations, both in your business world but also in your personal lives with your spouse or significant other. It’s really important.

When I talk to business owners often, they’ll tell me something about getting a fighting with their wife or their husband and then they’ll mention, “What was the fight mention about?” And they’ll tell me a few things. When it comes down to it, it’s like that person didn’t take out the trash. And I’ll ask him, “Did you ask them to? Or, is that something that you’ve agreed on with your partner?” “Well, they just … Doug, they should just know. I mean, come on, trash is overflowed, dah-dah-dah-dah.”

Now, going to their story, the expectation was never set and now, they’re mad at each other for weeks on in. It’s really ridiculous as an outsider coming in, and I do it too. And the second thing is just communication. If I don’t tell you something if I don’t communicate what’s going on for us in our business or in my relationships, how are you supposed to know?

Also, if you don’t clearly understand something that I’m saying, I need you to let me know that. As a business owner or a leader, wherever you are in your business career, but just as a leader, somebody that’s doing this work, you are a leader in society. It’s important for you to take that role in yourself and ask somebody, “Hey, can you repeat back what I said so I can make sure you understand?”

It’s a simple question. I must have done that a dozen times during this meeting, but that allowed them to actually have clear communication because the truth is when both of them agreed on something and I asked them to repeat it back, they were not really agreeing on the same thing. They were missing each other just by a little bit, but these little misses caused unmet expectations. They caused problems in the relationship later on, and at the end of the meeting, everybody left happy and very thankful, which I always love when I go to a client meeting, come in to do some kind of consultation.

I want you to look at this. Where in your life are you not setting expectations clearly with somebody else by getting upset? Are you getting upset at somebody regularly? In other words, do you see a pattern of getting upset with a particular person in your life, whether that be an employee or an employer, whether that be a spouse or a family member? Chances are if that pattern is repeated, it’s an unmet expectation. In other words, you have an expectation that they are not meeting. It could be an expectation of behavior, a way of being or something that they’re just not doing, or something they are doing.

The second thing I want you to write down, or think about then write down, is are you being clear in your communication? If I were to look at all your communications during the day, would I have a really clear understanding of what it is? Now, if you’re an employer, and as you all know if you’ve listened to this, I work with business owners professionally. It’s what I do. If you’re an employer, oftentimes as business owners, what we want do is just have our staff just read our minds.

I used to always talk about my key player. Her name is Darcy. I would just say, “I need you to read my mind. Why didn’t you read my mind?” It’s a joke we do back and forth, because I don’t always clearly communicate. I have an idea, I’m an entrepreneur and I’m always on the go running six businesses now at this point. What I will tell her, “I need this done.” It’s half of an idea. She knows me well enough now at this point to ask for clarification. As a business owner, it’s also my responsibility to clearly communicate, and it’s practice I’m working on too.

So, I ask you this, where in your life are you having unmet expectations because you haven’t clearly defined them with somebody? Where also are you not clearly communicating? Now, once you’ve identified those areas, what I want you to do, give you the opportunity to do is take action. Go ahead and clear up those expectations. Make sure that they’re clear and then get agreements. You have to get an agreement with somebody on the expectation.

For example, my wife might expect me to take out the trash every Tuesday night. Now, I’ve got to agree with that. Maybe I don’t agree with it. She just tells me to do it. It doesn’t work, but if I agree with that and go, “Yes, I will take out the trash every Tuesday.” Now that expectation is crystal clear. If I don’t do it, it’s on me, not her.

Also, communication, if I just say, “Hey, I want to do something fun this weekend.” I have to be a little clear on what that means. I have to be a little clear, or if I tell my staff like this person the job description had, “I want you to …” It was something like, “Exceed customer expectations.” Well, what does that look like?

Allow them the opportunity to win. That’s a critical aspect. Everybody should have the opportunity to win on these things, so you want to make that they have the opportunity to win, whoever it is. It could be a friend of yours like just clearly communicate. Take all the ambiguity out and it makes your relationships just flow with ease, it makes it fun. And like these two, these business owners and their key staff, they walk away. Everybody is happy and the business has grown, and that’s how business proliferates.

That’s it for me today. Have a fantastic day. I will see you tomorrow. As always, go out, share this with three people, then go out and be the Author of Your Own Story. Take care.

How to Live Your Dreams?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6222021/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Four days ago I had the honor of having a video conversation with a business owner, an entrepreneur. Now this conversation wasn’t as typical as I normally would have. See, I’ve known this person for a very long time, and two years ago they called me up on my phone and asked me for some basic business advice, which I gave to them happily, and I’m happy to do it for most people actually. Now, fast forward to today.

They called me and I knew something was up, something was going on. I could hear it in the tone of their request. Even though it was by chat, you can kind of tell, you know what I’m saying? when someone sends you a chat message, you can kind of get the tonality and the feeling behind the message. I took him through a brief introduction coaching session and when I have that coaching session, I do what’s called the wheel of life.

Now you settle different modifications and of course, I’m always talking about the five to thrive here, on the daily growth hacks, but on the wheel of life, I’ve expanded a little bit. Actually, I have eight sections and there’s a lot of reasons I do that, but in that section I had him say, “Hey, on a scale of one, or it was actually zero, to 10, where are you in each area of your life?”

Now this man was a magnificent person. A great father, a great husband, a great friend, and a good business person, but on his scale, on his wheel, he had mostly threes, fours, and fives in almost all areas of his life. Now by any stretch of the imagination, right? 30, 40, 50% fulfillment in your life is just sad. I’m sorry to say, and he’ll be watching this and I’m using him as an example only because we’ve all been there right?

See, what happened was, Well, he called up looking for some basic advice. He took my advice and started working, but only weeks later did he fizzle out. He fizzled out on what he was working on and just stopped. Then would not to start again maybe six, nine months later, and fizzle and start again and just fop, and this time the people around him were frustrated with him. They were tired of him talking about his dreams, talking about how he was going to help all of these people.

He had a great business idea, and it would help a lot of people out there, millions of people possibly, but he kept starting and stopping. The reason was is his why wasn’t solid enough. I did what I typically do with a coaching client and I took him through a process I call the 90-day game. We gamified his life, we actually took his life and made it into a game.

I’m happy to say, four days later I just got a text message from him and he said, “I’ve already got people in my pilot program, it’s up and running and it starts on Monday.” Here you’re watching this on Super Bowl Sunday here in the United States, or listening to me. If you’re listening to the day this is released, how amazing. In four days, he did more than he had done in two years, only because he had more direction.

What we did wasn’t magical. Yeah, I have years of coaching experience and as a mentor for people and business owners, and I know how to cut to the chase and get people to where they need to go, but my secret really is simple. I helped him identify what he really wanted, get really clear on why he wanted it, and then I helped him gamify it. At the end of each day, just like if you watch the Super Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday, how do you know who won? At that end of the game, how do you know the winner? You look at the scoreboard.

What we did is we made it a game for him. By the end of each day, at the end of each week, at the end of each month, and the end of each quarter, he would know if he was winning or losing. Every day he went home and made sure he put a win, a W in the checkbox for himself. Now I’m getting text messages telling how happy, how amazed he is. Again, compressing two years of time, two years of just guilt, frustration, worry, of not getting where he wanted to go, in four simple days.

That’s the power of having somebody come in from the outside. It’s also the power of really getting to know your why. Why are you doing what you’re doing? Yeah, tactics are great and tactics are helpful. I’m not downplaying the tactics, but you need to have the mental clarity and headspace to move forward with tactics otherwise, you’ll fizzle out.

What I’m telling you today is I want you to grab your five to thrive. Your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships and your business, and where are you starting and stopping toward your goals and dreams? Then when you ask yourself, when you’ve written that down, and I want you to do the work. When you’ve written that down, right, and we all have areas where we’ve done this in the past, so don’t look at me and I know I do, so I’m sure you do too, just because I don’t say I, I have nothing, we all do. We’re all guilty of this to some degree.

Where have you done this that you still want to move forward with? Then what I want you to say is, why did you want that goal? What is your real why? Then how do you clarify a win right? How do you know at the end of the day that you’ve won? That you’re working towards this goal and you actually have a win?

Look, if you want more clarity around this, reach out. Reach out to me on social media, happy to do an example 30 or 90-day game for you. Maybe if we have a group, I’m happy to do that too. As the Author of Your Own Story group, I’d love for you to be more involved. Go out there, build your community, respond to people’s messages, help them on their journey. That’s what this is all about and that’s why I started these daily growth hacks, right?

I committed to doing 365 and here we are in the 200’s of episodes. By the end of this year, I would have done at least 365 of these. That was my goal. The reason is, I had a why. The reason was when I started my journey years ago, when I started the Author of Your Own Story concept and path in 2007, there was no one really there to help me. I hadn’t seen anybody doing this, living a life this way. I read about it, but no one was telling me how, and that’s why I started this show because I wanted to give simple little short tips, under 10 minute mostly, that people could do each and every day to get them one step closer to their path.

I’d love to help you and I’d love to help you even more, so make sure you get on that community. It’s on Facebook, so if you’re on Facebook just go ahead and dive right in, but join the conversation. So much of the stuff that we talk about here in these daily growth hacks, it’s about doing the work.

You see, this man that I’m talking about, this business owner who compressed two years of worry and just hellish life, into four days of greatness, right? Boom, he had broken through the barrier with just one simple call. One simple clarity communication call.

Now I want that for you and that’s all about doing the work. That’s it for me today, go out inspire somebody by being the Author of Your Own Story and I’ll see you tomorrow.

Make Your Dreams A Reality

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6204165/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

If you’re listening to me on audio only, you can probably hear a running water behind me and that’s only because I’m right by the river. This is a river my wife and I take our son down to almost daily. Each and every day, we’re able to walk down here, enjoy the sun, enjoy nature and we’re able to do it almost any time that we want to.

The reason I bring this up is I just got a call from somebody who actually friended me on LinkedIn and had a question for me. Now, what this question was, was how do you get this lifestyle you have? He told me his backstory. He has a master’s degree. He’s actually running several businesses and here he is at the stage in his life where he wants to be able to travel, move somewhere else with his family but he can’t. At least that’s what he thinks.

He thinks he can’t do it. He thinks that he can’t actually uproot and change things. From his mindset and his mindset when we talked, he actually felt like he is at a certain stage of life where this actual change can’t actually happen, and that’s not true. Back in 2007 as I talked about, I started my journey, my own Author of Your Own Story journey which led me to the place I am today where my wife and I can work and live and play anywhere in the world we want to and that’s where I want for you.

That’s my story. That was also this person’s story as well, and the difference is, this person didn’t follow through. They waited. Now, 30 years later, they still have the same dream and yet now they feel stuck. Their story had changed. Their story is now a story of impoverishment, of being stuck and not getting what you want. I don’t want that for you.

What I want you to do is grab your journal, grab our five to thrive right here right now and write down what you really want in each category: Your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, your business. Bonus points, take it another step up and write about what you want in your life. Now, do what most people never do and I know you’re going to be the exception, but do what most people never do and take action. Take action today. I want you living the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle and I want you to have it all, and that is the first step.

That’s it for me today. I’m going to go back and enjoy my family, go play by the river. What I want you to do is simply go over authorofyourownstory.com. Make sure you’re on our newsletter and if you’re already on our newsletter, great. You’re already getting tips, tricks and techniques delivered right to your email inbox, and share this with three people. Three people that you care about and respect. Show them that you respect them by keep sharing the word.

That’s it for me. I’ll see you tomorrow. Take care.

Who Are You Really Doing it For?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6199340/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I just got off an intake call with an old buddy of mine. This guy I’ve known gosh, almost 20 years now, and during that time, he’s actually been in the same place. Now, what he said to me was, “Doug, I’m actually exactly in the same place I am today, where I was when I last saw you,” and that was almost 20 years ago. And what he was talking about was not only in his financial life, but also in the area of his marriage, in the area of his relationships with his friends, in the area of his business. He hadn’t changed, he hadn’t grown up is really what happened.

And we actually started talking, and I said, “Look, I’m going to do a coaching session with you. We’ve been friends for a long time. Let me see if I can help you out.” And he agreed.

And as we went through the coaching session, I got very emotional because it became very clear, what he was doing was actually robbing his family, robbing his family of his gifts. So he hadn’t changed. He was relying on them to fill his cup rather than allowing his cup to be filled and overflowing into theirs. He hadn’t changed, he hadn’t evolved. He was still the same young boy that I had met almost 20 years ago.

Now, here he is, as a grown man. He’s got kids, a family, a business, yet he’s acting as if he’s still in his early 20s. What he hadn’t actually figured out was a way to move the needle. And he didn’t figure out why he was doing what he was doing.

When I actually said, “Hey,” we set goals and I said, “Well, why? Why did you want these goals?” He gave me his reasons. Then I asked him the next question, a question I ask everybody, “Who will this affect? Who will this affect if you actually achieve these goals that you set?” And each and every goal, he put his wife and his children. And that’s where it gets really emotional, right? It gets really emotional because it’s so easy for us often to let ourselves down. How often do we say we’re going to do something and just not. We don’t show up. We don’t show up fully in our own power, we don’t show up as the men or women that we could be, because it’s easy to let ourselves down.

But I asked him the question and I’ll ask you, and I know from my own experience, I won’t let anybody else down. In the past, more often I would let myself down all the time, but I’ve developed that relationship with myself where I have that integrity within me, to love myself and honor myself. But I would never let you down. I just wouldn’t. Don’t we all do that? Don’t we all go the extra mile for our friends, our family, our loved ones, strangers especially, holding doors open, but we don’t hold the doors open for ourselves? And that’s what he was doing.

And then what I told him, I said, “Look. Every day I want you to wake up and look at who you’re doing this for. Do you want to be the next five years in the same place, having the same conversation with me, and saying, ‘Doug, I just haven’t changed. I still need help?'”

I looked at his life through his Five to Thrive, and we go a little deeper on that in coaching calls, but just even the Five to Thrive, we look and that and I said, “On a scale of one to 10, being real, raw and honest with me, where are you?” And he was in fours and fives. Yeah, he had a couple sixes here and maybe even a seven, but we all deserve, you deserve, as well as I, to be living at eights, eights and above throughout our lives, all the time. Yeah, if something dips in a day, that happens, but you should be right back up there at an eight, nine or 10. And I want you to have all 10s. That’s what I really, truly want for all of you. And now, even if you’re at an eight, that’s great, but if you’re below an eight, we need to do something today to change that. You need to move the needle.

I’m here to help you, and I’m happy to do it, just like I do with my coaching clients. My coaching clients are firing at nines and above all the time. That is their thermostat, that is their set point and I want that for you, just like I want for my old friend.

Now he’s on his path, and this is the first step in that journey that we had together. And I hope, hope, hope, hope for not only his sake, but for the sake of his kids and for his wife, that he continues taking these steps, the steps necessary, so 90 days from now, when I talk to him … I’ll talk to him sooner than that, but 90 days he is not even the same man. I hope 90 days from now, if he does and follows the plan that we laid out today, just moments ago, he will be unrecognizable to his former self, because he’ll be living in his own story. And that is what the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle is all about.

That’s it from me today. Go over to AuthorOfYourOwnStory.com, where we’ll give you more tips, tricks and techniques, delivered right to your inbox each and every day, so you can continue on your path.

And make sure you share this with at least three people. The reason that he actually got on a phone call with me it’s because somebody shared it with him. And I invite you to do the same thing. The time for your change is now, and you may open this up by sharing this with three other people, you may open up somebody else’s life, and allow them the permission to step into their own story.

Inspire somebody by being the Author of Your Own Story, and I will see you tomorrow.

Revisit: The Art of Dabbling

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6196046/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

The art of dabbling. Well, I’m here to tell you it’s not an art at all. When you dabble, you actually don’t go anywhere. You can’t focus.

You’ve heard that saying, jack of all trades, but master of none. Well, that happens in our lives too, our careers. We seem to always dabble at that shiny new object. And if you’re an entrepreneur like me, it’s easy to get caught up in that. But how often are we dabbling in our own lives? I realized this in school, and you see this often, while you’re taking a history class has no relation to the English class you’re taking the next hour, which has no relationship to the math class you’re taking the hour after that. There’s no linear progress, you’re just dabbling in these subjects, year after year, as you’re building them on.

Now you are going in, and you are diving into them year after year, but there’s not a deep dive. Now we’ve also heard that if you want to master a language, how do you do it? Totally immersion. You dive in. It’s the absolute best way. Take it from somebody who’s been trying to speak Spanish for so many years. I listen to audios every day, but when I actually went down to Columbia, or when I’ve traveled around the world when I dive deep, I learn so quickly. It’s a necessity. You’re in the environment. It’s the best way to do it.

Just like when I started my agency, marketing, I dove deep. I was studying marketing 12-plus hours a day, every single day. I did this for a long time. I still study today. It’s just something I’m very passionate about, because it allows me to get my message, it allows me to achieve my mission. It’s the act of diving deep. Now I personally also did this in my own personal development and growth. You see, I started on the pack of personal development at a very young age.

Then I went into business development. Each time I dove really deep. Tony Robbins has got all these courses. My wife and I did them in less than two years, all of them. We went all in and went big. And we still study. I do this every single day. That’s what I want to ask you, in your life, in your career, maybe you’re an accountant, and maybe you’re really good at what you do, but you kind of dabble in this new stuff that’s going on here. Or maybe you’re a marketer, or you want to be a marketer. You want to have your own marketing agency.

You dabble a little here, you listen to a podcast here and there, and then you go off, you learn a little coding, but actually, then you start learning something else because all of a sudden cryptocurrency is big. “Yeah, maybe I can make some money on investments in Bitcoin,” or some of the new crypto currencies that are coming out. I get it. We have so many distractions because our inner game isn’t solid. That’s why these daily growth hacks.

If you’re doing these daily growth hacks, and you’re actually doing the work, and doing a deep dive, how can you take it to the next step? What books can you read? How often are we dabbling? Some of you have mastered something. You’ve mastered photography. You’ve mastered scuba diving. I know a lot of the listeners out there who’ve shared what their crafts are. We have a YouTube person on, that listens every day and always sends me messages.

If you’ve mastered your craft, but how many are just dabbling in your own life. You’re just barely scratching the surface. You’re just dabbling in who you are as a person. What are your possibilities? You’re limitless, so what is it? Why not dive real deep. Now you can do this in a multitude of ways, and this is exactly why we created the Author of Your Own Story University, that you don’t have to go to the university. Of course, we think it’s the best. We only created the Author of Your Own Story University because we couldn’t find anything that we thought was good enough.

We couldn’t find anything that we wanted, so we created something. We created something that was amazing. We dove deep into this. We are throwing everything we can at it. It’s absolutely amazing. In fact, I just got 120 MP3 players that will be shipping out to our members. That’s just one example, but you don’t have to do it with us. Listen to these daily growth hacks, and try something else.

If you’re mastering interpersonal relationships, make sure you go all in. Read 30 books and see what all the authors say and come with a general understanding on the topic, what exactly you want to do. Maybe you’re trying to master a part of your spirituality. Maybe you really want to just dive in. Talk to different spiritual leaders. Talk to people who have different faiths. That will challenge your beliefs and make you look at them a different way. I think that’s good. That’s healthy.

But if you’re gonna do it, like yourself, you’re gonna dive deep in anything, you need to dive deep into yourself first because that is your foundation. When everything around you starts to shake, the world comes, things happen. We have things that are thrown at us, people’s expectations, timelines, we get sick, other people get sick. If you don’t have a solid foundation on who you are as a person, and who you are as the author of your own story, that will all crumble.

Don’t dabble. Do not dabble. What I want you to do to right now, grab your journal. Write down your Five to Thrive. This is what we always do because this works. Write down your Five to Thrive. Each of those Five to Thrive areas, that’s your mind, body, soul, relationships, and business. I want you to write down where you’re dabbling, and where you’re diving deep. Maybe right now you’re on a deep dive into your physical performance. There’s somebody else out there that sent me a message today. Was telling me about how they’ve changed their lives with their diet, their exercise routine, not drinking any alcohol. I applaud you. You know who you are.

What are the other areas? Are you dabbling everywhere else? Are you making sure those are consistent while you’re doing your deep dive? Where in your Five to Thrive are you just dabbling and not really diving deep? Also what I want you to do, is right down below that, be honest with yourself. Look in the mirror. Really be honest and raw. This is a time for you, are you diving deep within you? Do you really know yourself? Have you really dove in deep into the subjects of intimacy, into creating the life that you really, really want.

When you look around right now, are you living your dream? If you’re not living your dream, it’s a shame. It really is. I’m not mad at you at all. I’m only mad at you if you don’t live your dream, and not striving to do so, then I’m gonna get upset because I think everybody has the inherent right to live life to its fullest and on their own terms. That’s what I want for you. I want you to journal.

Are you really just a dabbler right now? That’s okay because the first thing is just recognizing that. If you are, I want you to write down what is it like to be a master? What is it like to be to dive deep into your own personal and business development? What is that gonna look like? Now is that gonna look like joining a program like Author of Your Own Story University? Is that gonna look like getting a mentor? Is that gonna look like reading 30, 60, 100 books? Is that getting your 10,000 hours, as often talked about in different books like the Tipping Point or Malcolm Gladwell’s other books?

Get 10,000 hours to master a subject. Well, have you spent 10,000 hours focusing on you? Deep diving into who you are and what you’re about? If you haven’t, schedule it. This is the time. You’re gonna thank yourself a year later. I’d love to hear from you too. I’m looking for thanks, but I’d love to hear from you, and just hear more about your journey, because as you’re on your journey, it inspires me, and it inspires the other people around you, and I can share it. I can share it with others.

See, that’s my journey. My journey and my passion is to inspire and help over one million people live the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle. That’s why I do this and that’s what lights me up. That’s it for me today. Remember, do the work, and go out and be the Author of Your Own Story.

Revisit: Start With A Fresh Slate

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6169895/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I actually heard this years ago from a friend Robert, and Robert actually was an entrepreneur along with myself. One of the things that he told me that really resonated with me and it still does today was that actually when you look at somebody who’s doing construction, they always put their tools away at the end of the day. No matter what they’re doing, they put their tools away in an organized fashion and close their day out.

Why don’t we as business owners? Well, this is was a great question and especially if you’re an entrepreneur. I always say I’m organized chaos. I have stuff all over the place and if you ever get a chance to go to my office or if you’re working with me remotely or even in my Sprinter van when I’m camping, I know where everything is, but if you’re an OCD person, you’re going to be going nuts in my office. I got stuff everywhere. One thing hat’s helped me a lot is actually cleaning up the night before. Look, at the end of the day, I’m the most tired. I have given my most to my business or to my family or whatever else is going on. By going through my office or wherever else, I also do this in the living room, my living space and cleaning up and tidying up the night before.

When I wake up, when I have the most energy, the most focus, I have a clean slate, a clean pallet with which to work. I’m going to suggest that you do this too, especially if you’re an entrepreneur. If you’re an entrepreneur, things are crazy. You are going full, full speed all the time, especially with the new business bringing a product to market. Having a clean slate starts from scratch, otherwise, your mind is just focused on so many little things. Here’s a trick, even more, that’ll help. If you have multiple businesses like I do, one of the things that I do is I actually clean my slate and then I have a folder that I put out on my desk the night before that actually has all of the information and stuff that I need for that project or business that I’m working on the next day in that folder.

I come, simply open it up, and then I have my organized chaos inside that folder, but the rest of my office is clean and natural. I still have glasses around that I brought in that morning, coffee for me, as well as water. Overall, it’s actually really organized and nice. This is a far cry from what it used to be 10, 15, maybe even five years ago where I would just have organized chaos, just piles around. I knew what was in those piles, but I didn’t start with a clean slate. When I do start with a clean slate, I am that much more productive. My brain space, the subconscious space, and this is talked about in several productivity books. Several productivity books talk about the way to organize your to-do list or task list that your subconscious brain is always taking in your environment.

Having a clean space and starting with a clean space each morning is going to give you more brain power, more creative juice, and energy to actually start and push through in your projects. Regardless if you’re a business owner or you’re working for somebody else or you’re a stay at home parent, cleaning your space is critical. I can almost guarantee that if you do this, you’re going to find just like making your bed, you’re going to find that actually not only do you feel better, but you actually have more energy and more space with which to create. That is a huge part of being the author of your own story. That’s it for me today. As always, remember to share this with three people that you want to start bigger conversations with, building your tribe.

Make sure to do that. Don’t hesitate, use your five-second rule, and do it now. Have a great day and remember to go out and be the Author of Your Own Story.

Revisit: Your Businesses’ First Impression

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6159074/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today I want to talk to business owners, and I wanna talk to you about what is your first impression, or what is the first impression your business gets. Now, today it’s all online. Now, we all know that, right? But as business owners, how often is that missed? You know, I was talking to one of my clients today, and we were talking about his business, and he was working on this very sophisticated marketing funnel, and it was really neat, except for the fact he missed his main first impression, or what I call your home base, which is your website.

Now, why is this important? Well, every time we do a search on the internet … Now, when somebody does a search, it’s a search of intent. It’s a search where you’re actually trying to solve a problem, you’re looking for a solution. Now, maybe you’re looking the best coffees shop in your area or best personal training studio, or maybe you are looking for a solution to a problem, like, “How do I start my own business?” Or, “How do I know what SEO is, or search engine optimization?” There are all kinds of questions people ask, and so when doing this, as a business owner, your first impression, or your home base, is gonna be your website. It’s even more important, I would say, than your storefront in most cases.

Now, I was talking to this client, and he was showing me this funnel, I asked him, I said, “Hey, you know, where do people land at the end of this funnel?” “Well, on my website Doug, obviously,”  he said. And I said knowingly, I said, “Well, how is your website performing? If I go onto your website, how is it working?” And he just didn’t know. So we checked, and I’m gonna give you a few resources that you can use right now. Now, if you don’t own your own business, what I recommend is going and checking this out with the company you work for, if you have an employee, and just check it out, and maybe show somebody in the IT department, or somebody at the C-Suite level, the business owner’s always a good idea.

But a couple things you can do. One is SightSpeed. Now, Google has an actual URL you can go to, if you go ahead and look at developers.google.com, and it’s PageSpeed Insights is the tool that I’m referring to. And you can paste the website URL into that, and actually see the score. Now, it’s gonna rate you on a score from zero to 100, for both desktop and mobile. Now, if your product or service is really tailored to the middle class or upper middle class, you wanna look much more towards mobile.

Conversely, you’re also gonna wanna look at that for people of lower incomes, because they don’t have computers. So it’s kinda the lower middle class that’s mostly gonna be using laptops, or students, depending, but again, this is all shifting, and we’re seeing search engine optimization, or Google and Bing, really diving into PageSpeed. So if you got a score below 80, that’s something you wanna change right away, and hire a professional to help you do that.

Also, how does your website rate, and how does it rate against your competitors? So you can go over to brandedinnovation.com, and you can actually do a website comparison. And what this is gonna do is take you and one of your competitors, and do some basic checks, and just see some missing elements, or potential elements, and make sure that you have them in place. Now, if you have them in place, great, you get a gold little badge. And if you don’t, you’re gonna get a red mark. And this will allow you to see exactly where you stand, on a very basic level, with some of the key elements of search engine optimization.

Now, it’s also gonna show you the same with one of your competitors, and also what your rankings might be. Now, this is very, very important. Now, full disclosure, Branded Innovation is one of my companies, so I own the company, and I can speak very highly for them of course, but also this is something that I know really well also.

Now the third thing that you wanna do is also when looking at your website, is have somebody go onto your website and look at their actual intent. What are the first few things that they do? Now, I always recommend putting a heat map behind your website. Now, what a heat map is, is just a way where you can actually see someone’s mouse move through the screen, and where their clicks are going on your website.

Now, as somebody who’s ran an agency for many, many years, often times we’ll put a heat map in the back of a website once we take it over from marketing, and we’ll notice that people are clicking in areas that we didn’t necessarily know about, or at least the business owner didn’t. For example, they might be clicking on a picture that doesn’t go anywhere. Now, if we’re seeing clicks on there, those are intent, those are signs of intent, meaning someone wants something to happen. What we wanna do is then go back and change that image to have it click to where we want them to go.

So these are three basic things that any business owner can do, and can do really quickly, and all of them are free. Now, the heat map might cost you money, depending on the company you’re using, but there’s a variety of free heat map sources that are out there. And maybe you require somebody to actually install it for you, depending on the website they’re utilizing. So try these three. Again, if you’re an employee, go ahead and try three now anyway, and give it to your boss; it’s a great report to get. As always, look at your business from the perspective of where your potential customer is going, but also look at the way that you utilize the internet. When we utilize the internet, we’re using it for intended purposes, and your business is no different.

So that’s my tip for you today. Remember, go out and be the Author of Your Own Story.

The Importance of Knowing Yourself

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6141821/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I was having a conversation with an organizer who organizes high-level events for entrepreneurs and business people. Now, this is an invite-only event on top of a mountain and you can guess kind of what this event is like. Now, I was very honored to be considered and to be recommended to be an invitee to this event. And during the conversation which is essentially an interview to see if you can get accepted, so to speak, but during the conversation, I asked him his story. I want to know what made him tick and why he started these events.

He said something that I thought was very profound, and very profound in the sense what he told me was he really knew and understood himself. He told me about the businesses he had built in excess of $50 million for just his last business. What he told me, “Doug, is I always have a partner. I’m the creative. I’m the vision guy. I’m pretty crazy and pretty wacky and that’s actually why I started this event because I wanted to have more very successful entrepreneurs getting together.”

What he does is he actually hire someone who’s the polar opposite of him. In fact, in his event series that he runs, again, which is very well-known, he has actually hired a boss, a CEO, someone to manage the whole company because he realized he doesn’t have the skillsets to do it and the skillsets he wasn’t possessing was the ability to organize and systematize a business. That’s a common complaint with most entrepreneurs.

But the point of this whole conversation, the reason I bring this up to you is I was so interested in how well he actually knew himself. He knew himself well enough that he knew, “Hey, look, I could probably run this whole event series maybe this other business that I’m running, but if I get a partner, if I bring somebody else and he’s got maybe more experience or the opposite skillsets or someone who’s just simply a contrarian, I can actually grow this a lot faster and with flow and ease. It will just be easier to do.

After our conversation, we got off and again, I felt very, very thankful that he considered me and invited me to join the group. After the conversation, I started thinking, “Geez, where else in my life, in my Five to Thrive, in my mind, in my body, in my soul, my relationship to my business am I not being true to myself? Maybe I don’t know myself.

How often do some of us go out there and we try to fix our weaknesses? We focus on our weakness to try to make it better when really we should focus on what we’re good at, our strengths. The ability for us to actually give our gifts to the world and focus on improving those gifts and then bringing somebody else in to fill the holes, the things that we’re not that good at.

I can tell you, my life when it comes to financial accounting or very detailed granular work, it’s not my forte. Now, in the past, in my early 20s, I worked really hard at trying to get better at it and I did in a sense that I was able to get good enough to grow my business. But it wasn’t really fulfilling for me, and when I actually started outsourcing, outsourcing my bookkeeping, outsourcing my financial analysis, outsourcing my systemization of my businesses, when I started outsourcing that to my staff or to somebody else, I actually was able to thrive. My business started growing exponentially.

And that’s where I started wondering, “Hey, where else can I do this?” After this conversation, I’m still wondering. Where else am I trying to cover up my faults? Where am I trying to cover up my weaknesses and work on those in getting better where I really should focus on my strengths. See, I think my strength is one-on-one coaching, teaching people. I’ve always been a teacher.

Ever since I was in high school and coaching sports camps, all the way from running a gym to teaching marketing to lecturing the students, to doing my one-on-one private coaching and small-group coaching and even retreats. This is where I thrive. I know this is my zone of genius and I know that if I have to get focused in the details and the detail works the logistics, it’s just not where I thrive. It’s not where I’m the best. I bring in people. I bring in a staff and build a team around me to do that.

Now, in my body, same exact things. Where am I trying to improve? Now, when I was a college athlete, I really wanted to improve my long distance running. I was a great sprinter. I was an anaerobic athlete and I still am, but I would start focusing on the long distance because I wanted to be holistic. I wanted to have a whole perspective.

In retrospect, if I would have focused on improving what I was already good at, it would have carried me further in my athletic career. This also goes in other areas of our life, our mind as well as relationships. There are certain things that you just want to work on relationships, let’s be honest, but what areas are you just really horrible at? Just really just not great in relationships and what else do you exceed in and really do good?

For me personally, if you were to throw me into a social situation with a couple of hundred people at a party, I would do great for the first few hours but it would drain me. But on one-on-one or with a small group where we’re at a dinner table or a boardroom or a conference, I could be there forever because I could definitely impact the people that I’m with and that’s what lights me up. If I can help somebody and uplift them in a large level, that’s where I excel.

That’s what I focus on. I no longer focus on trying to be able to network or work a room. It’s not just who I am, and I no longer have to do that. I’m lucky. I’m asking you for the possibility for your own self. Where is it in your life, in your Five to Thrive, where are you trying to cover up or focus on a potential weakness where you really should just be on elevating your strengths and then bringing people around you just like this gentleman did to focus on building up your weaknesses with their talents?

That’s it for me today. As always, go to authorofyourownstory.com where you get the latest tips, tricks and techniques delivered right to your inbox each and every day. Of course, share this with three people so you can continue to build your tribe. This is the way you do it, servant leadership. Give it to somebody else. If you’re a business owner, give it to your staff. If you’re a staff member, give it to a friend or a fellow colleague. This is the way you continue conversations that better the world and will better yourself.

Throw Your Old Dogmas Away & Get Out of the Dogma House

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6107041/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

All of us in life have dogmas, external dogmas or ideologies that are placed upon us, things that we just assume to be true, things that we’ve always things we should do, right? You’ve heard that term in these daily growth hacks that you don’t want to should all over yourself. We have these “shoulds”. I should spend more time with my family. I should work more. I should go to the gym. I should get up at 4:00 in the morning. I should stay up ’til 2:00 in the morning working. The shoulds go on and on.

I know I have these in my life. Oftentimes when I’m sitting out writing out my day in my journal what I want to accomplish and looking at my calendar I often think of, “Well, I should be able to go to the gym and work out for an hour, an hour and a half. And I should be able to spend just tons of time with my family and be the ideal husband, the ideal dad. And I should be able to build all my businesses all at once, and I should be able to give all my clients the time they deserve or I think they deserve. And I should, I should reach out to old friends that I haven’t talked to in a while. I should actually reach out to 20 people a day, I can do that. I should go for a walk with my son for at least an hour, and I should go for another walk on my own for an hour listening to an audiobook, and I should …” It goes on and on and on.

These “shoulds” are dogmas, they’re dogmas that have been placed on us. We’re working on a business or an idea or a way to get around in our goals, we look at these old dogmas and we take them with us. We take them like backpacks going through life, and oftentimes we do those subconsciously. Next thing you know you have all these bags on you and we make the joke about dating, “That person has got too much baggage,” but don’t we always do that? Don’t all of us do that on a routine basis in our lives and other areas? Of course, we do.

What I’m going to ask you in your five to thrive, where are you actually resorting to old dogmas? Where are you using shoulds? For example, maybe you’re like me. You’re a 40-year-old businessman and you’re working out and you’re working out as if you were the 20-year-old college athlete. You’re hitting it hard and you’re noticing your body is breaking down a little bit more than it used to, but you’re still going after it and you’re loading protein in you.

I found myself doing this. In fact, I hired a trainer, and talking to him I was just saying, “Look, I used to hit it so hard. It wasn’t very long ago I was playing competitive soccer at a decently high level. I was the oldest guy on the field and I was proud of that. Then I took two years off and I don’t know if I can go out there and bang around with the guys anymore.” It was interesting because he chuckled and he sent me a document. This document was from a health coach that was listing out the exact same scenario, a little bit different but very similar, just said, “Hey, look. You have all these other opportunities in your life. You may be just want to slow down that train that the 20-year-old used to be.” As soon as I read that I chuckled to myself because I was stuck in an old dogma, the old dogma that I learned way back when of just you have to train your body intensely hard to get where you want to, and every day just a little bit more, if not one hour, do more.

Now educationally or cognitively I knew better. I really did. But I was stuck in this old mentality of testosterone alpha male type mentality, and then I started thinking of course where else in my five to thrive am I doing this? Where am I doing this in my relationship where I’m in an old dogma of shoulds? I should spend time with my wife. And I should, but quality versus quantity time, that’s something I’ve learned over the years.

There are all these other dogmas and which other layers do I want to peel back. That’s why I have a coach, and that’s why I recommend you get a coach or a mentor. Now it could be anybody. It could be a friend, although I don’t recommend usually working with friends, but get a coach that’s up to your own ability. Not everybody can afford a high-level coach like I do. Maybe for you, that stretch of getting a coach could actually just join accountability group or go into the Author of Your Own Story group on Facebook. It’s private closed group where you can share information and coach and work with other people. Of course, you can also get a coach, and if you need a recommendation, shoot me a message and I’ll be happy to try to point you in the right direction of coaches that I know. They’re all at different price points, different experience levels, and different specialties. If you’re looking someone specific, let me know and I’m happy to help you.

But also, what I want you to do is be your own coach. Go through your five to thrive. Where are you actually having old dogmas, shoulds or unconscious beliefs that are affecting your progress towards the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle that I know you want to live?

That’s it for me today. Make sure you go to authorofyourownstory.com, get on that email list right away so you can get the latest information. We have a ton coming up this year, and I’m so excited for it and I want you to be a part of each and every bit of it, that you want to be involved in. That’s the beauty of the email list. You can unsubscribe at any time of course, but you can read it and just take those pieces that you really want.

Then also, share this with at least three other people. Make that your goal for 2018, that you’re going to share these daily growth hacks so you can keep having conversations that matter with people from all over your life. Keep growing yourself and in turn, you’ll also grow your circle of influence and raise the people that you’re actually standing around or being around and raise their standards. Of course, go out today and inspire somebody else simply by being the author of your own story. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6104787/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Happy New Year! The new year’s a time of rebirth, a time of cleansing, a time to start over. Yeah, it’s an arbitrary day on a calendar, but still, it’s a great time to not only reflect on the past but to really be present and move forward into your own future, into your own story. As your story shifts and changes, how do you actually navigate those waters? I’d like to give you a couple resources. We did a seven-day course, Seven Days to Becoming the Author of Your Own Story. It’s totally free. There are no catches. There are no gimmicks. This is a course we filmed a little over two years ago, I think, at this point. It’s me talking, but also giving exercises.

It was a way for us to say, hey, how can we give people, who are new on this adventure as well as people that are experienced a few new looks and tweaks, where they can take seven days of their time and actually devote 20 minutes to an hour, maybe a little bit more on some of the exercises, maybe a little bit less, and have a jump start into being the author of their own story? That’s what I want for you. I want you to try on the possibility that you can come into this new year completely refreshed. Let that baggage just go, the baggage of the past, the hurt feelings, the stories that you’ve had, the stories other people have had about you. Just brush that off. Let’s move forward.

So, go to authorofyourownstory.com and enroll in that seven-day course. It’s totally free, so I encourage you to take advantage of it. Now, people that do take the course, we get feedback from them that they, actually, saw insights into their lives they’ve never seen before. I want that for you. Part of that course is, actually, having a 30-day game that you can put forth. Now, we do the 90 day game with clients of my own, as well as some of the coaches that we work with, but a 30-day game is a great start for you.

Also, go over to authorofyourownstory.com and click on community. That’ll take you to our private Facebook group. I want you to get in there. The reason I want you to get in there is, strictly, because there’s tons of information that we shoot video and film and things that come up within the community, but you are also gonna meet like-minded people, people like yourself. Remember the saying, “Birds of a feather flock together, so choose your friends wisely.” I think it was Jim Rohn that also said, “You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with.” Now, you and I are spending time together right now, and thank you so much for that, but I want you to have more people, more people to encourage you, to inspire you, to push you. Now, some of the stories in there are really heart wrenching. You’ll hear about people that are going through tough times. You’ll hear about people that went through tough times and have changed that around. You’ll also hear from people who are extremely successful in all areas of their life and are looking to share with others and, maybe, even just go 1% better in their lives. That’s why I want you in the community.

Another resource, make sure you get in on our newsletter. We have so much big stuff planned for 2018 in Author of Your Own Story. Our team is so excited, and I want you to have the opportunity to be a part of that. The only way you get an opportunity is by being on that email list. It only goes out to them. You can follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, wherever you want to, but the email list gives you events in all these other things that we’ll be launching in 2018. Now, if you’re like me, and growth is great for you, you love growth, it’s something you’re passionate about, as I am, in changing the world, then make sure you get over to the Author of Your Own Story University page. Just get on the waiting list. It just gives you the opportunity to get in the door when we open the doors in February.

I want you to have that spring cleanse, that deep, deep, deep dive into subjects like these. This is great. You can use it for your whole family. We not only mail you worksheets that you can go to your local coffee shop, your office, or at your home kitchen table, or even out in nature and journal and do deep dives in the subjects we talk about, we have a book that we talk about each and every month. Each month has a specific subject we do a deep dive into. There are video courses that are designed to allow you to think differently, to elevate. There are exercises. We really go all in. We send you an MP3 player with a little card each month that you put in there, so you can listen to, in your earbuds, all this information when you go for a walk, you go to the gym, while you’re in your car. You will have Automobile University delivered right to your doorstep along with all of these other resources. There’s nothing on the internet that we’ve ever seen like Author of Your Own Story University. That’s why we’re so excited about it.

I want you to grow. More than anything, listening to these is great. If you can share it with somebody else, you’re gonna grow faster. It’s just proven science. The more people that you are having in your conversations, you’re gonna grow quicker. Why wouldn’t you want to? It’s like going to the gym. Having somebody to workout with is gonna make you more accountable, and it’s gonna allow you to stick to your goals much, much longer. It’s been proven by science. It’s the same thing with personal and business development. We’re gonna give you a lot more. In the community, as well as the email list, we’re gonna do much deeper dives into business development, as well as mental philosophy as we go through it and the psychology of what allows you to be a high achiever, and actually, really just be the author of your own story and forge your own path.

Last but not least, just be you. Go out and inspire someone, simply, by being the author of your own story. That is the key. I can’t tell you how many people reach out to me, personally, as well as people that are in the group, all the time, talking about what it really means to them when they actually are going towards their goals, that energy that it gives you, the passion. It just attracts other people. They see you, and it helps them, kind of, break out of the matrix, so to speak, as a lot of people think about it, detach, and then, all of a sudden, their minds open up as yours have. You’re a leader. If you weren’t doing this, you wouldn’t be.

Just make sure you’re doing the work. I have the deepest respect for you, the respect for you for doing more, for actually going out and bettering yourself to make the world a better place. That’s what I’m on a mission to do. I wanna enroll you to help me make the world a better place by simply inspiring people by being the authors of our own story. I also wanna hear from you, hear from you regularly. It warms my heart. I wanna know what’s going on. What do you need help with? How can I help you? Just let me know. I’m easily accessible, and I’m always here for you. That’s it. Let’s make 2018 the best year ever, and I’m here for you, as well as our whole Author of Your Own Story team. Let’s do it together, and I look forward to seeing you in the new year.
