Now, I just got off the mountain, and that’s why I’m a little disheveled if you’re watching this, but if you’re listening to this, just imagine me looking perfect, and that’ll work great. I got off the phone call with a friend of mine. The friend of mine is a coach, and he coaches individuals at all kinds of levels, and what I mean by that is th coaches individuals just starting out on their journey to becoming the author of their own story, although he calls it something different, all the way up to people that are high-level executives.
Now, what do I mean by extra time. I know you’re thinking like “Doug, you know we all have 24 hours in a day. Nobody has extra time.” And that’s totally true, but let’s say you’re the average American.
So once again, I had an author of Your Own Story, daily growth hack listener, reach out to me and say, “Doug, loving the daily growth hacks, I just wish I could have these conversations more and more. How can I do that?” And to that person I say, “Well first of all, if you listen to these daily growth hacks, we’ve covered this subject before.” And if you want to hold on to your limiting beliefs of not having community, then that’s what you’re going to get. You’re going to get these limiting beliefs and they’re going to stick with you.
This is a topic around business, and a topic I’ve had several times in the last week when I’m talking to business owners about their business model and how they actually want to get out of their business so they can become the authors of their own story. Oftentimes what happens is a business owner’s building the business as a solopreneur and they surround themselves by key people, yet they haven’t been able to take themselves out of the business. In fact, even a worst case scenario, they branded their business around their skill sets and about their name. Now their business is synonymous with them.
So this is a tip I got from Jim Quick. Now, Jim Quick is thought of as the memory guy. So, you can find him over at his website, but he also has a fantastic podcast I recommend checking out. So Jim uses the acronym FAST, how to learn anything and how to learn it faster, right?
So FAST, what does F stand for? F stands for forgetting what you already know, and really focusing on the task at hand. So forgetting your limitations, forgetting the subject matter at hand. So if you’re studying business, or you’re studying a language, forgetting those rules you already know and going in with a child-like mind, and really going in with an open mind. Because really, you can’t fill a cup that’s already full, so you have to empty your cup to be able to refill it with new information.
Now, this is a tip I got from Robin Sharma, now as leaders in our communities and leaders in business, we get hit by a barrage of information every day. You know right here, right now, I’m talking to you, I have three screens going. There’s information coming at us at all angles. We have chats going on, we have social media, we have messages from our friends and our family. And oftentimes, what happens if we lose focus.
Today I’m going to give you a brief, brief introduction to the six human needs, or the driving force of human nature. Now this is something that I learned in a course I took a long time ago called Date with Destiny, and I still use it today. It’s also something we do a very deep dive into The Author of Your Own Story University, but for this episode, what I want to do is just cover the basics for you, just so you can get an introduction to something that you can use right away.
What is the match game? I’m not talking about a dating game. I’m talking about a trick or a game that you should be playing on a daily basis, moment by moment to make sure that your words, actions, and energies match up to what you want to create as your own story. What do I mean? Are you walking around talking about being broke? Man, I wish I just had a little bit more money, so I could get out in nature and have a boat to be on the water, things like that.
I actually heard this years ago from a friend Robert, and Robert actually was an entrepreneur along with myself. One of the things that he told me that really resonated with me and it still does today was that actually when you look at somebody who’s doing construction, they always put their tools away at the end of the day. No matter what they’re doing, they put their tools away in an organized fashion and close their day out.
The five-second rule. No, I’m not talking about the rule that allows you to drop food on the ground and pick it up within five seconds, and it’s still good to eat. That’s something a lot of kids do, and a lot of you adults probably do too.
I’m talking about something totally different. I’m talking about a methodology that Mel Robbins brought to the mainstream. She’s written several books, she’s done tons of Ted Talks, and talks with interviews on podcasts, all around the world. If you haven’t had a chance to see Mel, I highly recommend it. Go to YouTube, she’s got several interviews that go in depth in the five-second rule, and her story. Very inspirational. Truly someone who’s living the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle.
