Don’t Fall In Love With Ideas

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6555430/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

All too often, as business owners, we fall in love with our own ideas. Now, these can be products, these can be services, these can be things that we’re going after. We can actually grind it out. It’s a gift. It’s a talent. And something that entrepreneurs and business owners have in spades, right?

But oftentimes, what happens is we fall in love with an idea that isn’t the right idea, or at least we’re not looking at it from the right angle. We can be dragging that idea down the road just like it’s something that we’re carrying. A big weight on us that slows us down.

Now, this can also happen in other areas of our life. Remember, we’re not disconnected. If you’re a business owner, your personal life is equally connected to your business. Now, if you’re not a business owner, and you’re somebody that’s on the path to the Author of Your Own Story journey, this applies with anything that you’re doing.

What happens, often, is we have an idea we fall in love with. Now, this could be a relationship. It could be the idea of love, or idea of love with one person in particular. What happens is, is we hold on to that idea, that dream, that fantasy that we’re in love with. What that forces us to do is not look at other angles within that idea. There might be another outcome or path that can get you there quicker.

I don’t know about you, but for me, when I fall in love with an idea, I just absolutely love it. Right? I have pictures on my wall. I have all kinds of things going on. But when I let go of that love, just for a minute, right? And let go of it and detach myself from the idea that I’m working on … Now, again, this can be in all areas of your Five to Thrive. When I detach myself, it allows me to look at different angles, right? Different points of view that then allow me to possibly find a different path to get to my outcome sooner.

What I’m going to encourage you to do today is grab your journal, write out your Five to Thrive: your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and, of course, your business. Then what I want you to do is look at areas of each of those categories that you’re in love with something, right? Are you in love with a particular workout program, right? Right now, I’m following the Strong First Protocol. Love it, right? So what I might want to do is detach myself from that, and look at it from different angles, right? Am I getting the outcome that I want from it?

Or maybe it’s in relationships, right? Maybe it’s a friendship that I have that, I love the friendship. I love the idea of the history we’ve had together, but yet every time I hang out with this friend, all he wants to do is get drunk, and that’s not really what I’m about. So maybe I’m just not looking at this from the right angle. What else can I do? Can I cherish this relationship but try something differently?

Or maybe it’s my business. This happens to me more often than not, is I have these business ideas that I think are amazing. I’m currently running six companies, so I’m always having these ideas and different angles to look at. But oftentimes, I could be wrong, and if I fall in love with a business idea, or the project idea, it doesn’t allow me to see the forest from the trees, so to speak. Having that different angle and looking at it differently allows me to upgrade, and actually get to the outcome much sooner.

Again, write out your Five to Thrive. Where in each category are you in love with an idea? Then I would invite you to detach yourself temporarily … detach yourself. You’ll be safe. You can come back to the idea and the love anytime you want to. And then look at it in a different way.

What Can You Simplify?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6547064/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I just got back from a trail run on the river, beautiful day. I actually had a client call me and just had a question. I replied to him and I just got off the phone, and I wanted to share with you the conversation, or at least the gist of the conversation. This is a very successful business owner. They run an eight figure business, do very, very well for themselves. But, they had a question. They had a problem around their business and their business finances.

The question really came about, they had an expense coming up, or an expense that they saw coming up, and they didn’t know how to bridge the gap, right? Bridge the gap from where they are right now, to where they want to be, because that gap was this expense. Now, I told them a story. I told them a story about an author, an author gets a phone call from the editor, right? Of his book. And it says, “Geeze, I love your book except for one part. I just don’t like the ending.”

The author says, “Wow, what’s the problem with the ending?” The editor replies, “I need the ending to be closer to the beginning.” Point being we want to condense and simplify things, and often times we make things ultra complex. What my client was doing is he had this gap in his business, and to him, this gap was gigantic, right? What he wanted to do is really get after a new market. This was going to cost a lot of money, right? To get after this market, because of marketing, and there’s some innovation issues that were coming by, as well as some legal issues.

When I asked him what was going on in that part of the business, he went on to list about 50 items. 50 items that had to be done in order for them to bridge the gap between where they are in their business to where they want to be in this new niche that they were going after. Now, it was a great idea, right? But he had this complex roadmap he was trying to navigate, and I asked him, I said, “Hey, how can you simplify? How can we simplify this? If we had to do two things, you could only do two things right now to get you to your goal, what would they be?”

He sat for a second, and then I told him the story about the author and the editor that I just shared with you, and he chuckled. He said, “You know what, Doug? All I have to do is close a current proposal I have.” I said, “Okay, well what do you have to do to close that proposal?” He paused for a second and thought, and said, “You know what? I’ve got to make one phone call.”

Now, he hung up the phone with me, and I got a call back maybe 10 minutes later and his view was totally different. He said, “Geeze, I was making this so complex. I made the phone call, and the customer had one question that needed to be answered. I just pushed him over the edge by answering that question.” Meanwhile, he had spent over a week stressing and making this dramatic plan, sophisticated plan of these items that had to be done to bridge the gap to where he wanted to go.

Now, it made me think about it, right? How often do I actually make things more complicated than they need to be? Way too often. I’m notorious for it. I’d love to do strategy, plans, roadmaps, and for my clients, I have roadmapped their whole year in their Five to Thrive, and including their fun, their wealth, and their growth. That’s eight different vehicles that I’m roadmapping for them.

I have all these areas for them to grow and grow in a major way, and it works. Sometimes it comes back to simplifying. How can we simplify it? So, for example, maybe you’re like a lot of people and you just want to drop a couple pounds, right? You just want to drop 10 pounds. Maybe you’re thinking, “Well, how much vitamin B should I be taking? Vitamin D? Well, vitamin D’s a fat soluble vitamin, so maybe I need to make sure I’m having that with fat, and what kind of fat should I be eating?”

What can you do to simplify it? The honest answer is really keep a food log and break a sweat every day. If you do those two things, you will hit your goal. You just will. I’ve seen it time and time again. What happens is human nature, is we make things overly complex, right? Make things overly complex and that puts more barriers in front of us to achieve our goal. That allows us to stay safe. It’s built withinside us, to stay where you are, ’cause we know we’re safe right now. Stay here, ’cause it’s scary outside of our comfort zone.

But when we simplify things, that allows us to jump outside of our comfort zone, and accelerate the process. I’m going to ask you today, like I asked my client. What can you do to simplify? What if you could only do two things? Grab your journal, write out your Five to Thrive. What I want you to do is mind, body, soul, relationships, and business. Now, when you look at those areas, the goals that you’re trying to achieve in your 90 day game, which I hope you’re doing, right? and if you haven’t done the 90 day game, go over to Author of Your Own Story and go ahead and sign up for the newsletter. You should get a link for the 90 day game, otherwise, shoot me a message on social media, I’d be happy to get back to you.

So what I want you to do is your Five to Thrive, write that out, write your goals, and then where are you making things too complex, right? Where can you simplify that process for yourself? Be your own coach. Yes, I encourage everybody to have a coach and a mentor to help you on your journey, but in this case, you can be your own coach in this moment, right? Do that and simplify it. If you can only do two things to reach your goal, what would those two things be? Now, pick one if you have to, right? Maybe you just want to pick one thing to focus on, like I mentioned body as an example, or my client, business.

But maybe for you it’s relationship, maybe it’s regaining intimacy with your spouse. It’s a very common thing for most people. What it is, what are those two things that you can do and simplify and focus on those two things? Be the author, shorten the ending to the beginning, shorten your book. I think it was Mark Twain that said, “Sorry for the long letter, I didn’t have enough time to write a short one.” Very simple, right? Simplify things and stop making them complex.

That’s it for me today. As always, go over to AuthorofYourOwnStory.com, get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques delivered write to your inbox each and every day. Slay A Dragon

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6541007/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Just a few days ago, I was actually invited to take part in a ceremony using plant medicines. Now, if you’re not familiar with what plant medicines are, they were medicines that were used traditionally by indigenous tribes especially, over thousands of years ago, to evoke a type of experience. Usually used by shamans or religious healers.

Now, I’ve done some work like this before. In fact, I went down to Colombia, and to the Amazon, into the jungles there, it’s the Northern part, and worked with a female shaman for over a week. It was an amazing experience and I’d be happy to tell you about that at some point. But here I was, going for a similar experience. Now, if you’ve ever done this before, you know how difficult this work is. It really rips you apart inside, right?

People don’t get hurt, at least not that I’m aware of, but it really makes you an introspective. Usually introspective type work, healing yourself, and opening you up to new realms of possibility. Now typically when you look at this, when I showed up, I was getting ready to go, and I’m dressed in all white, because reflective color, just being respectful to this particular practice, and making sure that I paid my respects as I invited to come through this, and I was very, very fortunate to be able to do this exercise and going through these plant medicines.

So I showed up, and all of a sudden, everything in my body was like, “Get out of here. Don’t do this.” Again, it’s one of the hardest experiences I’ve ever been through personally. It literally stops time and prevents you from lying to yourself, and really makes you look at your life in a whole new perspective. Almost like if you can imagine having a map. Now, if you remembered the maps from back in the day for sailors, map makers would literally draw a dragon on different parts of a map, usually towards the edges to say, “Hey, don’t go here. There’s danger here,” right? “This is unknown territory. Don’t go.”

So most people would avoid it. Now, there are a few sailors, there are a few sailors who saw these dragons as opportunities, opportunities that most people wouldn’t venture into, and therefore that’s where the gold would lie, right? That’s where people wouldn’t be going and that’s where all the riches would find. Well, I found the same thing to be true for me and for personal development.

Now, I’ve been lucky enough to coach some of the most successful people in the world, and I still do today, and I absolutely love it. As well as coaching people through our Author of Your Own Story University. If you haven’t checked it out, go over there. But for me, I was sitting outside, in my car, and nervous as heck. Then I remembered the map makers and I remembered the dragons. I remembered what I got from my last experience.

Now, it was again, the hardest work I’ve done. I’ve traveled the world, I’ve done meditation retreats, I’ve swam with sharks without a cage. I’ve done a lot of crazy things in my life. I’ve been to Mount Everest, just crazy stuff. But the plant medicines were definitely the hardest journey I’ve ever been on.

So knowing that I was going back into it, I saw dragons all over my personal map of how I was viewing this experience, this world that I was stepping myself into. That’s why I remembered to always slay a dragon. Now, obviously you want to make sure that this is an educated choice, but what’s happening for me is fear was coming up, right? I was afraid, I was timid. “What’s going to happen? I don’t know.”

Last time I did this, you get sick and then you break to the other side, and when you break to the other side, it really forces you to look at some very hard aspects of your life. It’s really tough. It was at that moment that I realized that it was a dragon before me, a dragon on my mental map that I had to slay. I got out of the car, shut the door, and went right into the ceremony, and I’m so glad that I did.

Such amazing breakthroughs and really reminders of the path that I want to be on, which is a path of sharing my gifts and really helping people live their ideal world. That’s why we came up with the Author of Your Own Story concept, is I want to help you. I’m able to coach high-end clients, and frankly, they can afford it, to have one on one laser-like coaching, and not everybody can. That’s why we have these daily growth hacks and also the Author of Your Own Story University.

More importantly, what I want you to do is grab your journal. Write out your Five to Thrive, and where in your Five to Thrive do you have a dragon that needs to be slayed? For some of us, it’s in our body. We say, “You know what? It’s too dangerous. Swinging a mace and doing kettlebells? I’m in my 40s and 50s, I can’t do that.” I heard that just the other day, yet here I am, I’m actually training with somebody to use a mace, an exercise mace, and kettlebell training. I did kettlebell training today.

These are dragons that can be slayed, so what one person’s version of impossible or a dragon, is another person’s opportunity. The key here is finding out what your dragons are, right? We’re each on our own journey, that’s why it’s Author of Your Own Story, not mine or ours. It’s your story. Where are your dragons? Where’s your map in your Five to Thrive? Is it in your mind? I’ve shared previously that I had a client of mine, I was working one on one with, who’s an extremely intelligent man, businessman, very successful, but his story was that he was stupid.

Therefore, he just didn’t read. Then, after clearing up that dragon, after slaying it like an opportunity, he actually fell in love with reading and books. I’ve had clients all over the board that have different dragons. We all have our own. Our own stories, our own maps of the world. The very, very important thing, the thing that you want to do now is to identify where your dragons are on your personal map, by starting to list out your Five to Thrive and write them down. What’s holding you back? What are you seeing as a perceived threat or danger, that probably isn’t?

The next step is to take action, right? Immediately go after that dragon and slay it, right away. The first thing you can do is once you’ve done your Five to Thrive, identify your dragon, and then what’s the next step you can do on your journey to get closer to slaying that dragon? Immediate action. You never want to leave a decision without taking immediate action, massive action if you can. That’s what I want you to do. In fact, I would love to hear what you think your dragons are over in the Author of Your Own Story community.

Of course, if you’re on the newsletter, just hit reply, I get all those emails, and just let me know if you don’t feel comfortable sharing that. I would love to hear what your dragons are, and I’ll share some of mine, and I’ll share my experience with plant medicines that I’ve had all over the world. I’m happy to.

Also, before you go, share this with at least three people. You can have conversations that matter around you. Build your tribe. This is how you get to the next level on your journey to being the author of your own story. That’s it for me today. I will see you tomorrow. Remember, go out and slay those dragons and be the author of your own story.

Revisit: Built To Sell

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6536008/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

This is a topic around business, and a topic I’ve had several times in the last week when I’m talking to business owners about their business model and how they actually want to get out of their business so they can become the authors of their own story. Oftentimes what happens is a business owner’s building the business as a solopreneur and they surround themselves by key people, yet they haven’t been able to take themselves out of the business. In fact, even a worst case scenario, they branded their business around their skill sets and about their name. Now their business is synonymous with them.

This has happened to Tony Robbins, for example, in the personal development field, but this has also happened to one of my clients who was also a coach, as well as another one of my clients who owns a furniture store. What they’ve done is they’ve narrowed themselves in. They didn’t build their business for success or an exit strategy. This is something I recommend all business owners consider. Build your business so you can sell it. Maybe you don’t want to sell it, and that’s fine, but by building your business so you could sell it, so you’re building it as if you’re going to sell it, this gives you a whole variety of opportunities.

One of those key opportunities is pulling yourself out of the business so you stop being the bottleneck of that business and you can go out and you can travel. You can be the author of your own story. Heck, you can start another business if you’d like to if you’re crazy like me, but each person, this gives you more leverage. Each person makes their own decision, but if you’re in the business and you are the roadblock to that business, you can never sell it.

For example, if you’re going to buy Doug Holt Online, you’re going to buy Doug Holt Online, what are you really buying? Yeah, I have revenue, but it’s all based on my brand. That’s not a business that’s built to sell. Whereas if you were to buy something like Kmart or Target, these are businesses that are built on solid principles and not one person in mind. You could own a yoga studio, you could own a furniture studio, you could be a consultant, and you could be in the field of finance. Building your brand around the actual brand concepts and around … Instead of services, building them to products allows you to pull yourself out and actually have an exit strategy. While this may not be, again, your strategy for right now, this allows you so much more leverage over time.

I see this so often where I get the call from the business owner who’s fed up and they want to invest in coaching. They want to invest in coaching because they’re so fed up with their lifestyle. They want out of their business and they want to sell it. Of course, as a business owner, you want to sell it for 5X revenue or more because you know how much value’s in there, but me as an investor, I’m looking at your net income. I’m looking at what I can get out of that business. Chances are, they’re not going to meet at the same place unless you built your business to sell. If you’re selling services, turn them into products.

There’s a great book called “Built to Sell”, and I highly recommend it if you’re in this situation. Of course, you want to also systematize your business. Then you have books like “The Checklist Manifesto”, “The E Myth”, “Traction”. These are business books that can help you along your way, but either way you’re looking at this, what I want you to do as a business owner is grab your journal, or your laptop because this is going to be a process, and look at your business as if you’re an outside investor. You don’t know what you don’t know about the business. Can you pull yourself out? Can you extract yourself from that business and replace yourself with one or two key employees or key staff members? If you’re going to replace yourself, what’s that going to cost? That’s going to have an effect to the net of your business, the net revenue being brought in. If you’re building it to sell it, if you’re building it properly, you’re able to pull yourself out of that business at any time when you need to. That is the key to being the author of your own story.

This is a very simplified version of a very complex subject, but I want to introduce it to you because it comes up so often in conversations with me when I’m talking to business owners. I want this to be something that you’re ahead of. If you don’t have a business yet, but you’re thinking about starting one, this is a great place to start because you start with your exit strategy first, and as you design and build your business structure, you’re able to come at it from a different angle. You’re able to come at it with the idea that you’re able to go in, build the business, but be able to pull yourself out. This also helps your staff because they’re not always coming to you being the control freak, the roadblock, or whatever it is in the pipeline to actual growth and expansion.

That’s it from me today. I’d love to hear from you and continue the conversation on our Author of Your Own Story private forum, but of course, remember, build your tribe. I can’t emphasize this enough. Do the work and build your tribe. Share this with at least three people right now that you think would benefit from this and just have the conversation. Have a conversation with them and open up. That’s it from me today. Go out and be the author of your own story.

Revisit: Which Problems Deserve Your Attention?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6533883/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

This question comes from Victor, and Victor says, “Doug I’ve got a question that might be a great highlight for the Daily Growth Hacks. What problems or questions deserve our attention? I mean, how do we distinguish which aspects of our life we should be paying attention to, and which ones are a waste of time, money and energy?”

Victor, this is a great question and thank you for submitting it. Now there’s a lot of follow-up questions I’d want to know, like how do you define the problem? Is this a problem that you’re having internally or something that you feel someone’s bringing on to you? And what kinds of problems are these? So there’s a variety of questions.

Whenever a problem occurs, you’ve got to remember to couple things. One, there’s always three solutions to a problem. There’s not just one, two, or you know, there’s always at least three to come to through it. Now how do you determine which ones deserve your attention? Well, obviously some problems are immediate, right, so some problems that come to you right away that could affect your health. Those are things that you want to address right away. But the filter that I would use when an issue comes up, is I would put it into one of four categories. This is something that’s urgent and important. This is something that’s urgent and not important. This is something that’s not urgent and important. This is something that’s not urgent and not important.

Now this four-segment quadrant I got from Stephen Covey and I still use it today. He wrote it in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Oftentimes what we do as humans are we work in the urgent and not important category. This is often answering emails, these are problems that come up with friends that might come up, the drama in their lives. What we want to be focusing on Victor, with these problems are, those things that are important but not urgent, so if we can stay in that category there’s a sense of calmness that comes through you, and a sense of being able to achieve your goals at a higher level and really working towards those bigger goals that you’ve set for yourself.

With that said, and you may be talking about problems and questions that come up in your life. Like what are those problems or questions that really deserve addressing? That’s a great question, that’s going to be very individualistic, so in other words, what I would like that for the filter is do these problems or solutions, one is are they immediate? In other words, are these fires that I have to put out right now? And what happens if I don’t do anything with it? Now if I don’t do anything with a problem and it still stays there, it doesn’t really affect me or my loved ones, I’m almost likely not deal with it. Not in the sense that I’m avoiding it, but in the sense that it’s not really a problem, right? It’s just something that I’m creating within inside myself.

Now if something comes up and it’s a problem that comes up into my life and it’s something that, it’s more of a philosophical question, kind of like a career question or what do I want to do, or things of this issue, or maybe it’s a relationship issue. What I’ll do is I’ll actually set aside, set time to think about this. So what I’ll do is I’ll grab a journal, I love journals because the act of writing it out, that physical act of writing something out, there’s a brain connection. A kinesthetic connection that helps you release some of this creative energy. It really just works. So writing out the question. What is the question? And then write out what’s really going on, like what really is happening here? Now relationship issues and problems with relationships, very rarely are actually the issue at hand. It’s something else, and often times it triggers something from the past. So that’s what I want to figure out. Get to the root of the problem. What’s really happening here? And what needs to be addressed?

What needs to be addressed right now in this moment? What, this actually is just drama you just need to get away from. That’s the first step I would take, is journaling that out. And then thinking, “Hey, does this problem, or issue or question, does this affect my life? Does this affect my life currently? Or does this affect my future life as being the author of my own story?” For example, I don’t have enough money to pay bills. That’s a problem. That’s an immediate problem only if, you know, your family’s going to get evicted, things are going to happen, just adverse effects to you. Now if you can’t pay your bills, there are also other solutions. You can reduce your expenses. You can negotiate with creditors. You can find alternatives to paying bills. You can work more, you can get another job. There’s all kinds of solutions that turn that problem into a situation or just something that you’re dealing with on your day to day basis.

Now again, Victor, without knowing exactly what problems and questions, because this is pretty vague, to answer for you, I’m trying to give you the best solution of how I would address that. Now we’ll do the same thing with questions. Now questions come up all the time, and I love thought-provoking questions. That’s why at the end of these Daily Growth Hacks I always recommend you sharing them with at least three people because then you’re having conversations that matter. In fact, I actually seek out questions in my life and question my own belief systems on a regular basis. And again, I do this through journaling. So what I would do is write out the question, and I would write out what it would mean to me. So if the question is, “Should I stay here in Bend, Oregon where I am and use this as my jump off spot for all the adventures my family and I go on?” Now, this is something I can write out and I want to look at a pros and cons list. I like traditional pros and cons. What are the pros of me staying here and using Bend, Oregon as my home base? And then what are the cons?

You know, with the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle, I can live anywhere in the world. I can travel anywhere in the world. I have the financial means, and I have the means to do it just with the lifestyle, so I’m very lucky and very grateful for that. However, it creates a weird set of problems, right? Where do I actually choose to live? And so what I do is a pros/cons list. What does that mean? What are the pros of living in Bend, Oregon? What are the cons? What are my other opportunities, right? Third choice. What are my other opportunities that are out there? Sure, we have this really nice adventure band and I’m actually, you know, between these Daily Growth Hacks I’m actually working on to go on our next trip. You know, we can just live in there. We could travel the United States. There are all kinds of options. What are the pros and cons with that? And I’ll start weighing those questions out.

I don’t think there are questions that aren’t worth having. I don’t think there are questions that you shouldn’t actually think about, or waste your time on. Obviously everything’s relative, you know, you don’t have to spend six solid days trying to figure out where you should live, or things of that nature. Decisions get to get made, and I like to make decisions very quickly. I like to be decisive. I think there’s, the first thing that comes to mind tends to be the best answer for me. And so I recommend you look at that for yourself as well. But there’s no area that I don’t think should be questioned personally.

Now, with that again, I like the journaling, because the journaling you can also go back to and let it sit with you. So ask the question before you go to bed, right? So you ask the question like, “Jesus, should I use Bend, Oregon as my jump off spot as my home base? For all these epic adventures my family and I do?” And then the next morning, subconsciously during the night, things are working, things are going on in my brain, and the next morning that’s when I will start to journal about it again, and actually re-visit that question.

So Victor, I don’t know if this exactly answers your question, again it’s a little vague. If not, clear it up, just shoot me an email. I’m happy to go over for you, but also I’d encourage you to throw it in the Author of Your Own Story group to get other people’s insights as well.

That’s it for me today. So, remember, share this out with three people you know, have conversations that matter. And like Victor, make sure you’re actually putting this out into the world and actually doing the work. So grab your journal, do the work, just like Victor did. How do you solve problems? How do you solve things that come to you? Questions? I’d love to hear from you in the Author of Your Own Story group, so I’ll see you there. That’s it for me today, go out and be the author of your own story.

Revisit: Visualize Yourself Before Bed

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6532558/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I want to talk to you about something that’s really not a secret, but something that most people aren’t utilizing, or are at least under-utilizing, and that’s the power of visualization, and more important, the power of visualization right before you go to bed.

When you think about it, CEOs, athletes, people from all walks of life that have been successful have utilized visualization as a success tool. One way that they do this is, right before bed, they’re going to visualize themselves being successful at whatever endeavor they’re embarking on right before they go to sleep. Why is this important? Well, this is important because, when you go to sleep, your mind’s subconscious is going to process the last thing that you were thinking about. The last thing that was in your mind is something that you’re going to be thinking about while you’re sleeping.

For a lot of you, this is going to be an action movie. This is going to be a series on TV that you saw. Unfortunately, it’s going to be something that’s going to be violent. It’s going to be something that’s depressing. Look at most of the popular shows on TV right now are on Netflix. There are shows about rape, murder, crime.

Maybe the bad guy gets caught, but a lot of times, the bad guy is the alter ego hero that we’re watching. Think of shows like Breaking Bad or things along those lines. These are the last thoughts that go into your mind, and they’re often depressing. They depress you. They depress your central nervous system. They depress your thoughts and your feelings.

Now, one trick that almost every successful person … I say almost because I haven’t asked everybody, but every successful person that I’ve ever asked, they do a visualization technique before going to bed. You can even see people like UFC fighter Conor McGregor. He talks about this. You can check YouTube and find him on there. He talks about, “I visualize the win way before it happens, so by the time I’m actually even going to the weigh in or the press conference, I’m cocky because I know I’ve already won. I can see it in my opponent’s eyes. I’ve already mentally replayed the belt going on me or what have you,” him actually winning. Now, this could be you.

Maybe one of your goals is to start your own business, or maybe it’s to be a millionaire, or maybe it’s to have six-pack abs. Whatever it is, it’s up to you. What I want you to do is, right before you go to sleep, I want you to think about that. Visualize the success, not the journey, but the success. What is it like when you’re at that successful point? For example, I’ll use six-pack abs. I want you to look at that. I want you to picture yourself with six-pack abs.

Not only that, I want you to feel those abs, really mentally feel that ab. How do your clothes fit? What does it feel like when your clothes are brushing across your body and you have this lean, muscular body, depending on what your goal is? What are people saying? Are they looking at you but are looking at you differently? I bet they would. How do you feel? What’s the energy like? In order to get six-pack abs, you’re going to have to have a tremendous amount of energy, which is just going to snowball upon itself. How’s your self-confidence? What are people saying? If you have a significant other, how are they feeling? I’m going to guess pretty good.

What I want you to do is visualize this, but before that even happens, grab your journal right now. Write out your Five to Thrive, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business. I want you to come up with your goals in each of those five categories. Now, you’re going to look at each of those five categories and visualize yourself achieving each of those five at the same time, at the absolute same time. What’s happening? What does it look like when you’ve actually achieved it? What is the air like? Is it cold? Is it warm? Who’s around you? Are you listening to these Daily Growth Hacks in your ears? Here we are in our 60s, maybe it’s 100 by the time you’ve achieved it, or maybe it’s 71. I don’t know. Be as specific as possible. The more specific you are about your surroundings, and what it’s like, and what it feels like viscerally to actually achieve these goals, the more likely you are to achieve them and be pulled in that direction.

Again, here’s my tip for you today and what I’d like you to do, your action step. Remember, you’re listening to these. You’re taking the time to better yourself. Do the work. Do the steps necessary. It’s easy to put these ideas in your head and then just not do anything about it. This is your chance, where the rubber meets the road, the chance for you to do the work, and that’s what I want you to do. Grab your journal. Write our your Five to Thrive. Write what you want to achieve in each of those five areas, and be specific.

Now, each night before you go to bed, you’re going to visualize, the last thing you’re going to do. Visualize yourself, the success of achieving these things, achieving these goals, all five of them, and I want you to be specific. I want to know dates, times. I want to know what it feels like. Who’s with you? Where are you? Geez, get passionate about it before you go to sleep. Put a smile on your face. Go to sleep with positive energy.

I can guarantee you that, within 30 days, you’re going to notice a huge change in your amount of sleep, the way you wake up, the way you feel, and the way that you’re starting to really be pulled towards these goals. Things are going to come towards you. It’s going to seem serendipitous. It’s going to seem like it’s on a chance that, all of a sudden, these goals start happening and things start aligning, but I’m here to tell you it’s not by chance. You’re subconsciously aligning yourself to be pulled in that direction.

The Big Lie

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6529832/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I’m running around this river. There’s actually … A couple miles up, there’s a bridge and down the way, there’s another bridge. I’m running this as a loop and it started to remind me of a big lie that I told myself. Not too long ago, in fact, a year ago, we gave birth to our first son, Bodhi. An amazing event. Leading up to that, we had nine months of pregnancy, actually 10 almost, with my wife. During that time, I slowly let myself slip into deconditioning. I played sports at a high level my entire life up until a couple years ago, really. What I started to say is, oh, yeah, yeah. I’ll get back in shape as soon as Bodhi’s born, my son’s born. That’s when I really kick things into high gear. That’s really when things are going to start taking off, because I’ll run with him in the stroller every day and I’ll do this, and I’ll do that. Right now, my wife’s pregnant. She wants to eat this and that and it’s fine. Just a little phase in life.

The big lie I kept telling myself or told myself was I was still in shape and I was still doing well, when all of a sudden I remember one time putting on a pair of dress pants, getting ready to go down and to do a talk to a bunch of business owners who knew me. Most of them knew me. I’d say, a lot of them knew me, and my pants didn’t fit. What? It was ridiculous. It blew me away because the big lie I was telling myself was that I was still in shape. That I’d let myself slip today. Maybe even tomorrow, but I was going to get right back on it. Now, this was just in the area of my fitness, and I don’t know about you, but I can see this happen across my Five to Thrive.

Maybe it’s not fitness for you. Maybe it’s business. Maybe you’ve been lying to yourself saying you’re going to leave your job. Maybe you’ve been saying, “Hey, I have my own business, and someday, I’m going to take a vacation, or someday, I’m going to do what Doug and Erin did and take a month off and drive up to Alaska, or take forever off. Whatever it is for you, and just relax and enjoy life and all it has to offer. Because it’s not that expensive, by the way. I don’t know what it is, but the big lie starts with one thing, a small lie. That small lie is the hook. It’s the hook that catches you and brings you in. That small lie is usually followed up by another small lie, and another one and another one, until it crescendos into a domino-like effect to that big lie. That big lie that we tell ourselves.

Maybe this is the area of relationship. Maybe you have a spouse that drinks too much, and yeah, they came home drunk one night. Then, two nights in a row and two becomes three. Or maybe they’ve been abusive. Or maybe it’s something else in your spirituality. Maybe you don’t believe the philosophy you grew up in, but you said, “That’s okay.” You want to follow the line that everybody else says and you don’t speak up for yourself, and you lie to yourself.

See, the big lies are the lies that we tell ourselves. We have big lies we tell other people, too, come on, but the big, big lie I’m talking about are the lies that you’re telling yourself and the lies that I’m telling myself. What I want you to do is grab your journal. Write out your Five to Thrive. Where in each of those areas, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business, where are you telling a small lie? Where are you lying to yourself? Where are you not hitting your goals? That’s the first place I always check. If I write down my goals, and I hope you do, then where are you not hitting your goals? There’s a lie in there.

It starts with a small lie. Maybe you’ve already identified the big one, and that’s great. Identify that, and now start telling the truth. Start telling the truth today. You’ll be a better person. You’ll create more energy in this world, and everybody will love you for it, including yourself.

That’s it for me today. Make sure you share this with at least three other people, so you can have conversations that matter to you and build your tribe. Start today, and don’t lie. Don’t even start off with that small lie, because that what crescendos down to a big lie before you know it. Have a great day. I will talk to you tomorrow, and remember, go out and be the Author of Your Own Story.

Imagine How Others Would Do It

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6525857/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Often times for a lot of us we get stuck with problems. We can’t see the forest from the trees. Whether we’re working on a new project, a new business, or maybe we wanna become digital nomads, and we’re just not quite there yet.

One thing that has helped myself and my clients is by role-playing. Now, when I say role-playing, what I mean is just imagining for a moment how others would do what you’re trying to achieve. Now, what you wanna do is wanna put yourself in a position where imagining that somebody that you admire, respect who’s been there done that would handle the exact situation you’re in. So for example, for me when I’m launching a new business, when I’m launching one and if I reach the complexity that’s just beyond my comprehension, maybe I hit a wall, and I just can’t see the answer, what I might do is I might step into another’s shoes, right. Step into somebody else’s shoes that I respect. Maybe it’s a business mentor. Maybe it’s Steve Jobs. What would Steve Jobs do in this situation, and I can put myself in his shoes and decide which way I wanna move forward.

Often times by role-playing, what that allows us to do is actually move forward, because we can now step outside of our own paradigms and see things differently. Now, of course, you might be saying, “Hey Doug, well Richard Branson, you act like you’re Richard Branson, but that doesn’t give me the answer.” Well, it probably won’t but it will have you look at things differently. You’re now gonna start looking at things through Richard Branson’s eyes, not yourself. Now, this can be in all areas, right. So this can be in the area of your soul. You could say what would Buddha, Mohammed, Jesus, or anybody else do in this situation. You can do all kinds of things. I use the area of business in this example, but you can use what you want.

The problem often is, is we are built with these blueprints that we probably adapted when we were like five or six but now that we’re adults we’re running forward with these blueprints, and it’s like having blinders on. And that’s why having coaches, mentors, being in mastermind groups and listening to podcasts like this could help you see things just slightly differently.

So I wanna ask you today, where in your five to thrive are you dealing with something you just don’t know how to quite get over the hurdle? Now what I want you to do is write that down and pick five people you admire, really admire or look up to, and I want you to step into each person’s shoes, so to speak and actually look at that problem. What would they do in that situation? And once you’ve really gotten there, write that down and do it with each person till you’ve hit five. And now you’re gonna have five different opinions or perspectives on how to move forward on your own journey.

That’s it for me today, let me know how this works for you. Go out and inspire someone simply by being the author of your own story.

Compounding Time

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6519106/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Here I am parked right outside the gym, about to go in for a killer workout, swing some kettlebells, some maces around. I’m really excited and pumped about it. I had a busy day, and busy in the sense that we have people visiting our house. My son just turned one, so all kinds of these activities that are fun stacking on each other. I wasn’t able to fully immerse myself in my daily morning routine. The mindset work that I do and questions I ask myself, and the process that I go through each and every day to get me to my journey. Right? Get me through my journey, I should say, but get me to the endpoint that I’m working on right now.

I want to share with you a trick that I’ve been using for many years, and that is the idea of taking your mindset work or your hour of power or your morning miracle, whatever you want to call it; there are so many names out there these days, it’s ridiculous, but whatever works for you. Condensing it down for a typical commute time. For me, it’s less than 10 minutes, because I just don’t have to drive that much. When I do drive, I’m going 10 hours, because I’m going up to Alaska, or I’m traveling to the east coast for adventures. Whatever it is for you. Some of you don’t commute very much, like myself, very rarely drive, and you enjoy the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle already. Others of you are driving an hour or so one way to work.

What I do is I record it, professionally record it. I say professionally as I use the best recorder possible for myself. I use a nice microphone. I also get myself in the state, and when I say the state, I’m getting myself excited, getting myself kind of pumped up, or in the mood that I want to represent through my voice. On my drive to the gym, it’s about 15 minutes, hitting lights and such, to this particular facility. On my way there, I was able to listen to my morning routine and obviously drive safely, but putting myself in the zone, asking myself the questions. You know, who do I have to be in order to have this 300-plus acre retreat? Who do I have to become?

Because I don’t own one; I’m looking at them. I’m looking at buying a center where my clients can actually fly in from all over the world and stay with my wife and me, and be totally immersed in our coaching. That’s what I’m looking for right now, one of my goals. Who do I have to be in order … Then I pause, and I give myself time to think. I’ve recorded the question, and it depends on your morning routine. If you have questions about morning routines, shoot me a message. I’m happy to share some of mine and ones I’ve used with clients in the past. Then I pause, right? When I’m recording it, I actually answered internally. Right? I give myself that time, a little more seconds, and then I move on to the next question or the next thought process, depending on what that is.

For example, what are five things that I’m grateful for right now? Then, I list them off. I say, well, number one, I’m really grateful for a wife, takes care of my son. Number two, et cetera. I give myself that space and time. Now, why is this significant? Well, one is I’m always in that mindset of gratefulness and who’s the man that I get to become in order to have this high-end retreat center for people to come as coaching clients. I love working with people. It’s my passion. I want this to be the best. Who do I get to be while one is taking care of my health, and that’s why I’m here on a bonus time for the second time of the day. That’s important to me. When I ask that question, it’s that constant question almost like an album. We talk about this a lot in the Daily Growth Hack. It’s constantly playing through my head of who do I get to become to achieve this goal. Right?

I ask you this question, who do you get to become? Can you utilize things like this, recording yourself and then playing it back? Playing it back on your mobile device. Playing it in your car while you’re commuting, while you’re jogging. This actually one I was listening to today on my commute is designed for me to do while running in the morning. The reason I can tell it’s designed for me to do it, not only because I did it, but also because I give myself motivational talks like, “Hey, let’s go pick up the pace. You got this.” I coach myself through the run. I’m human, and I get tired. Oftentimes, it’s cold or whatever in the morning, or it’s too hot. Whatever it may be, and I just don’t want to do it, but I used this going through, and then I go into music. Right? Then, I go into my music or podcast, or whatever it is I’m listening to on the rest of the run, but this sets the tone.

It’s also a non-negotiable for me. What I did is I set up this system to make it easy for it not to be a non-negotiable for me, to make it extremely easy. That’s what I invite you to do. I invite you to do this. Grab your journal, five to thrive, write out key questions and what goals you want in your five to thrive. For example, if you want to be 10% body fat. Who do I have to be in order to be 10% body fat? What are the habits I have to instill? Then, you can list them out to yourself as you’re running or driving, you go, hey, look, in order to be 10% body fat, I need to drink a gallon of water a day. I need to have greens with every meal. I need to have protein with every meal, whatever it is for you. I mean, I’m just using this as an example, but do that for each of your characteristics of your five to thrive.

If you’re a coaching client of mine, of course, you’re going to go with fun, growth and wealth as well. Who do you have to be above and beyond that in the roles of your life, and then record it, and then play it back for yourself on your MP3 player while you’re on the road, on the way to the gym like I am, or whatever it is you’re doing. Whatever you do, make it fun, make it energetic, and I’d love to hear from you. Please share with me your recordings. I’ll keep them between you and I unless you let me share them with other people who are looking for resources and inspiration. On that point, make sure you share this with at least three people so you can build your conversations, build your tribe, so you’re having conversations that matter. Make sure you’re signed up for the Author of Your Own Story newsletter where you can always get tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your inbox. That’s it for me today. I’m going to go the mace, and I will see you tomorrow. Take care.

Paying A Fat Tax

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6515053/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Back in my early 20s, I used to work at a gym. People would come in to cancel their membership, and they’d say, I’ve been a member here for three or four years, and I’ve never shown up. Now, I used to call that a fat tax, a payment that you would make just because you had a certain condition that was going on. In this case, you paid because of your self-conscious about having this gym membership thinking that you might show up and be thinking that you might go, knowing that you really wouldn’t, right? That was a tax. It was a fat tax.

But I’ve also noticed that I pay a fat tax in other areas in my life. I pay what I call a freedom tax. What that is, I run multiple businesses, but I also have freedom of my schedule, freedom to travel with my family, and that’s why sometimes you get these revisits because I’m off traveling, and I’m not connected anywhere. This is what I call a freedom tax. The reason is, is I’m paying people to do work that I could easily and capably do, and it allows them, obviously, a job, but really I’m paying a tax for this freedom. I could have more money in my bank, my family could fly a private jet, or whatever it may be if I wasn’t paying this tax. But the tax is very worth it to me. Unlike that fat tax, the freedom tax is one that I really enjoy paying. Each and every time I pay it with a smile on my face because I know exactly what that’s going to get to me.

So, we have a bad, what I’m going to call a bad tax, and a good tax, right? The fat tax and a freedom tax. What I’m going to ask you to do is grab your journal, write out your five to thrive. In each area, where are you paying a tax? Where do you have a subscription, a service that you’re paying for, or maybe you paid to go to a Cross Fit, or Orange Theory, you’re paying thousands of dollars a year, yet, if you would just cut out the beer, and the nachos, and the pizza, you wouldn’t have to do any of that, right? So, that’s a tax for you. But, this could be in any area of your life.

Once you’ve identified that, see if it’s worth it to you. You might be surprised. Like myself, there are definitely areas that I’ve cut, and I’ve definitely made some changes once I’ve realized the financial and emotional expenditure that I was getting out of that.

That’s it for me today. I’d love to hear your comments as always and the author of your own story community. And of course, share this with at least three people that you know, so you can build a tribe for yourself. I will talk to you tomorrow. Have a great day, and remember, go out and be the Author of Your Own Story.
