Pain Provides You 3 Choices

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6584241/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I was talking to a client just last week who is going through a lot of pain. They’re going through a breakup, or what seemed like a breakup in their marriage. Now, they didn’t know if this breakup was going to result in just separation because they definitely were going down that path, or full divorce or even just complete hatred, dividing of their physical belongings, but also their children. Most of the business owners I work with are married and have kids, and this pain conversation comes up often.

I’m going to share with you the three choices you have when you receive pain. I’ll show you examples of how it applied to him. Now, the first thing and the role that he fell into, which I would say probably 90% of us fall into. When we encounter pain, the first thing we do is we start to either ignore it or blame other people. Now, what this does is allows us to play the victim role. We blame events, we blame other people, or we blame ourselves. In this case, for this gentleman, he was blaming his wife, his spouse for what she was doing, and more importantly, what she wasn’t doing and blaming the events that occurred, that had led up to this situation where they definitely were going down separation, but more than likely, headed down divorce. That’s the first thing you can do. You can blame events, you can blame self, you can blame other people, whatever it is. That’s choice number one.

Now, choice number two is when pain happens, you can change your conditions. You can change things around you. You can change what you’re doing and what have you. This is a choice that they were making. They were separating. They were changing their conditions. Now, he was taking both of these going on blaming her, blaming the events, and then, really, changing his conditions by separating. He had already moved out of the house. He had already moved his things in, was buying furniture by the time our session came up and he was telling me all about his situation.

That’s the second thing that can come up. When pain hits us, we may progress … Usually, it’s a progression. We blame someone else or others, maybe even we blame ourselves. “Oh, poor me. I’m the victim,” or, “I’m not good enough,” and we’ve talked about that. If you’re feeling like you’re not good enough, go back to a previous daily growth hack. We talk about ways to overcome that kind of self-talk.

But we’ll change our conditions. We’ll change our conditions. Now, this can be positively, or it could be negatively, and oftentimes, we’re changing our conditions because we’re running from something. We’re running away from the problem or running away from the pain because pain isn’t something most people run towards. It hurts. That’s why it’s called pain. You don’t want it.

But there is a third choice, and the third choice I’m going to recommend that you really look forward to or look towards when you encounter pain in your life, and that’s changing your blueprint. Blueprint really has to do with your physiology, your focus, and the meaning. Physiology, how you’re standing. Are you upset, you angry, or are you standing a confident, poised position? Get your physiology straight. Your physiology helps your psychology, and getting those two together really bridges the gap.

Then changing what you focus on. All too often, when pain comes, we just focus on that pain, which then seems to stack the pain. The pain builds when we focus on it. When we choose to focus on what’s positive though, the pain seems to dissipate. It doesn’t hurt as much. Now, I see this, I have a one-year-old son. He falls down. He just start crying and screaming. If I pick him up and I change his focus on something else … For example, I was making breakfast. He fell down. I picked him up. I changed his focus on my cooking. Instantly, he stopped crying. He forgot the pain. Yeah, it still hurt him a little it, but he forgot, and he was into what I was doing.

Now, this is a gross exaggeration, but the same thing happens to us. When I look at my client, he was focusing on what his wife wasn’t doing. He was focusing on the failure of his relationship and calling himself a failure. He was focusing on the negative. When we got him to switch that standing up tall and straight and focusing on all the great things that he had built, the things that they had cherished … They have beautiful kids together. He had a lot of great things to be focusing on.

Then changing the meaning. Now, what does this separation mean? Well, to him, it meant failure. He failed in the relationship. He wasn’t a good husband. He wasn’t a good man, and therefore, wasn’t a good person, but when he changed the focused and then changed the meaning, what does that mean to you, he saw an opportunity. He saw a way. He said, “Wow, this separation actually could be a way for my wife and I to come together stronger, a time for me to become a better husband, a better man,” something I call the bulletproof dad. He saw this now as an opportunity, and his energy just increased, energy increased dramatically, and the pain, he physiologically looked 10 years younger, and I was having a video conversation with him about this.

What I’m telling you now is you have three choices to make, and I recommend you to choose door number three each and every time. Yeah, for most of us, we still go through the escalation ladder of getting angry, getting upset, and then maybe changing our conditions, but the more and more you practice this, you go through that escalation ladder quicker, and you close that gap. Then right away, you go right into your blueprint.

If you’ve been practicing this for a long time, this might even take you as little as five seconds or less to give into that and go, “Okay, what can I focus on? What do I make it mean?” If you have a lost love one or something like that, what can you make it mean? Change your physiology. Change what you focus on, and then change your meaning, and that will give you power, passion, and opportunity.

That’s it for me today. As always, share this with at least three people so you can build your tribe and have conversations that matter, and if someone shared this with you, that means they think that you can play at this game, and so congratulations. That’s a huge compliment to you. I ask you to pay it forward to somebody else as well.

Then of course if you’re interested in having conversations like this that go to a much deeper level where we actually bring in other experts, talk about subjects as such a higher level, go over in just look at the Author of Your Own Story University. There’s an application process, but make sure you apply so you have the opportunity to get in when a seat opens up for you.

Problems Are A Part Of Life

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6584181/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

So, let me paint the picture for you or at least something that comes up often. You run into a problem or an issue in life and you’re just like I can’t believe this. Every time I go this route or I do something well, it seems to, a problem seems to rear its ugly head at me. Now, the problem here really isn’t the problem itself. Could you imagine if every time a problem came, you were actually excited? Wow, that would be amazing. So, here’s how to do it. Problems are part of life and the biggest problem that many of us face, especially business owners is we think we shouldn’t have problems. Well, that just doesn’t happen and when you set yourself up in a state of thinking you shouldn’t have problems, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

So, try this on for size. What if every time you had a problem, you saw it as an opportunity? Would your mindset change? Would the way you look at the world change? Would the way you approach conversations change? The way you approach your business, your days, your relationships, your mind, your body, your soul. Would it change? Absolutely. You see problems come at us all the time. It’s the meaning that we have behind the problem that actually causes the issues. So, one thing could happen to someone, so for example, a client of mine recently had an issue where their key employee left their business and they freaked out. It was a huge problem for them. What they had forgotten was this key employee had caused all kinds of issues in the past year. Had caused political drama within the organization.

So, when I did a session with him, I said, “Well, what’s the opportunity here?” At first, they were like, what do you mean opportunity? This is horrible. I can’t believe this is happening to me. When I got them to think about opportunity, they said, “Well actually, this person was okay at their job and they were a key position because they really had been with the company for so long,” and the business owner felt loyalty towards them. Which is great, but they caused tons of drama within the company and other great employees had left because of them. So, when they shifted their meaning. The meaning behind the problem, they actually saw a ton of opportunity and got excited and since then, they put in place someone’s who an amazing person at the position. Not only more talented, more skilled, but also more enjoyable to be around.

You see often times, when we change the meaning of the problem, it allows us to see multiple angles. Multiple things that we previously didn’t know were possible. This is the way you look at it. So, I invite you to try this on. Grab your journal. Write out your top three problems that you’re having right now. Now, what I want you to do is shift those. Look at those now as opportunities. So, write out your problem then below that write the word opportunity, colon, and now write out what’s the opportunity there. Change your meaning. As soon as we change the meaning from problems to opportunities, or something similar, it allows us to really catapult ourselves towards our own story. Remember you are in control. This is the author of your own story.

You can write it anyway you want and this is just one tip and trick that will help you get there a little quicker. As always, share this with at least three people that you know that you want to have conversations that matter with. Just simply share it here on iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, wherever you’re getting your Author of Your Own Story daily growth at. And if you’re one of those luck people who are listening to this because someone shared it with you, well guess what? To You Vs. For You

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6584121/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, this is going to be a quick tip but I want you to write this in your journal: What if life wasn’t happening to you but was actually happening for you?

Let me say it again and I want you to write this down, now obviously if you’re working out as many of you are when you listen to these, or driving, you can verbally pause this and answer the question. What if life was happening for you and was not happening to you? Now I said that a different way, right? So what if, instead of life happening to you, it was happening for you, right? Three times, same question just said in a different way because sometimes that sinks in a little bit better.

Now this is a quick tip and I’m going to leave it at that but this mindset can completely alter your life. Right? Completely change everything that you do and the way that you perceive your world, which is going to allow you to have more passion, more meaning and a quicker path to the author of your story lifestyle and that’s what I want for you. This is your story and I want you to write it well and live into it. You can be the hero because what if, life wasn’t happening to you but was actually happening for you? How exciting would that be?

That’s it for me today, as always share this with three people that you want to have conversations that matter with and make sure you go to authorofyourownstory.com, get on that newsletter and if you want to have techniques like this, deeper conversations with people who are jet propulsion, like trajectory towards the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle, of ahead and apply for the Author of Your Own Story University. Does History Repeat Itself?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6579357/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Recently someone told me that you have to beware of your past because you’re going to follow that past with you, whatever you’re doing. I had to say, “I disagree.” In my experience, history only repeats itself if that’s where you’re living, right? The past does not dictate your future unless you’re living in the past.

All too often, many of us are living in the past, right? We’re looking at our past failures, things that have happened to us, we’re looking at that, and we’re living into our futures. I can’t do that, because I’ve failed in the past, or so-and-so hurt me, or, I was hurt when I was in a relationship, or when I try to start my own business I failed. When you live in the past, history does repeat itself, and history does have control over you. Your past has control over you only when you live in it.

Now I’m going to invite you to live in the present, right? Think about the future, but live in the present, right here, right now, that’s all we have. We know that, right? You know that I do too, but all too often we look at the past, and then we start living into that, right? We live into those failures, and that takes us away from possibility, from the possibilities of being the author of our own story. If you’re going to live in the past, you can’t write your own story, ’cause basically, it’s just taking the same page over, and over again, and returning it, that’s boring, no one’s going to read that book, including you.

What I’m going to invite you to do is grab your journal and write out, where are you living in your past? Is that past dictating your future? Can you live in the present? You see, history or your past doesn’t dictate or control your future. Wherever you were, or you’ve been, whether you’ve been down and out, people have broken up with you, you’ve been hurt, loved ones have pushed you aside, you’ve failed in business, or maybe it’s in your body, or your spirituality, that doesn’t dictate your future unless you live there. Right here, right now in this moment, you can dictate your future, and where you’re going to go, it’s a choice, and I invite you to join me on the journey of being the author of your own story.

That’s it for me today. I really encourage you to do these exercises that we put out there. If you don’t do the work, you’re just really getting educational growth bubble gum, right? It doesn’t help you. You have to do the work. So journal this exercise, and share it with at least three people, three people that you want to have conversations that matter.

If you’re one of those three people that actually someone shared this with, congratulations, you’re loved, somebody actually thinks very highly of you, so that’s awesome. You can go celebrate that today, right? Not many people get that opportunity to have something like this shared with them. Then, make sure you’re on the newsletter. The reason I want you to be on the newsletter is not so I can sell you stuff, or anything like that, you can unsubscribe at any time, my job is to give you tremendous value. Our goal is to reach, selfishly, one million people, ’cause it’s going to make me feel better to help one million people, so it’s a selfish goal. I want you to be one of those people. It starts with getting on the newsletter. If you choose to opt in, or join in to the University, you’re welcome to do that as well, just fill out the application, otherwise, I will see you tomorrow, make sure you go out and inspire someone simply by being the author of your own story.

I’m Not Enough

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6577504/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

One of the greatest fears in life is that we are not enough. This is a fundamental fear that crosses all cultures, religions and destinations. We fear that we’re not enough. We’re not enough to be loved. We’re not enough in our business. We’re not enough in our fitness and our health. We’re not good looking enough. We’re not smart enough. We’re not clever enough. We’re not funny enough. We’re not good enough to be a millionaire. We’re not good enough to be a billionaire. We’re not good enough even to make an extra $1,000 a month. We’re not good enough to be in the Author of Your Own Story University. I heard that recently. We’re not good enough to take this journey. We’re not good enough to hire a high level coach and invest in ourselves.

You see, I used to think I wasn’t good enough all the time. I actually implemented into a daily practice, into my morning routine, sitting in front of the mirror and sometimes, if I didn’t have a mirror handy, I would just say it or I look into a camera and say it where I can use that camera like a mirror and say, “I am enough. I am perfect just the way I am right now. I am enough. I am perfect just the way I am right now.” I invite you to try this in your morning routine and evening routine if you’re able to do so.

An easy way of doing this is right after you brush your teeth. If you’re brushing your teeth in the morning and in the evening, usually we do it in the bathroom. We do it in front of a mirror. What you can do is right there, is you can look in that mirror and just repeat to yourself, look into your own eyes, the windows to the soul and say that. Say, “I am enough. I am perfect just the way I am right now.” Say that at least two times. Now, I recommend doing it even more, up to five times but a minimum two. Two will get you started and doing that twice a day.

What you’re going to find is all of a sudden, you’re going to feel lighter. You’re going to feel better and when you feel better, you project more confidence, you project more passion, things start to come to you in life. You start to make more money. You start to get the deals. You start to meet people in different relationships because you’re vibrating on a different level. We’ve all been around somebody who’s been a dud. Shoulders slouched and just depressed and you’re just like, “I don’t want to be around that person.” On the flip side, we’ve also been around that person who’s extremely charismatic, who has a passion for life and you just want to be around that person at all times.

This helps you do it. By repeating this mantra, so to speak of, “I am enough. I am perfect just the way I am right now,” this allows you to have more confidence and over time, you just sublimely, like a song in your head, just start believing it. I recommend you say this with love and passion. Love yourself. You are amazing. If you’re listening to this daily growth hack or watching this video, you are one of the very few people that are trying to better themselves to better the world and I applaud you because you are enough and you are perfect the way you are, right here and right now.

That’s it for me today. Make sure you share this with at least three other people, so they can get something out of this and you can have conversations that matter. Always go to the authorofyourownstory.com if you haven’t already and get on our newsletter. There are two questions I send you and I’d love to get your reply, so we can have a dialogue together. I want to get to know you better. That’s one of the reasons I do these daily growth hacks. Also, of course, go to the Author of Your Own Story University. If you haven’t applied for the membership, go ahead and apply. There’s no charge for the application but you’re going to get on your path to being the Author of Your Own Story a lot faster. I can guarantee you that.

All right. Have an amazing day. Go out and inspire someone by being the author of your own story because you are enough. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Control And Passion

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6570405/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Control and passion. I was talking to a business owner that I’ve been coaching for almost six months now and one of the things that he really wanted was to find more passion about his business. He was like, “Doug, I really want to find more passion. You know, that fire in the belly that you have.” And in the conversation, I said, “Great. That’s fantastic. And that’s something I can definitely help you with.” And I said, “How do you feel about letting go of some control around your business?” You could see his whole state change. He became stoic and almost fearful, but fearful in a protective way.

Now, we have a great relationship. And, as I do with all my clients, I break him down and it becomes a friendship. So he let me in. But I know him. He’s very stoic and very almost statuesque in the sense that he wants control over everything. Control to him is his lifeblood. It’s his security. It’s something we’ve been working on together since I started coaching with him. When I mentioned letting go of control, again, you could see him visibly just tighten up. Like, his butt cheeks clenched type tighten up, which is pretty funny. And then you just knew he couldn’t have any passion. You see, what happens is, when we want control … like in a relationship, you want control of your partner because you don’t want them to leave you. Or whatever it is. Or your business, you want control over your business because you’re scared that these clients will leave you.

Having control … you can’t have passion and control at the same time. They’re different sides of a coin, so to speak. If you have an immense passion it means you don’t have control, you just let loose of yourself. And I applaud you for that because that could be scary. Right? But if you want control, if control is so important to you, I’m gonna ask you why. Why is it important to you? What are you trying to protect? Oftentimes, when we want control it’s really fear. We’re afraid to let ourselves go. We’re afraid to dance like nobody’s watching. We’re afraid in our business we’re gonna lose our clients or something’s gonna happen.

So I ask you if control is important to you then what are you afraid of? What’s the worst case scenario? And I encourage you to write that down. I had him do this and his worst case scenario wasn’t so bad. And then when I said, “Hey, look, if you really want passion, try letting go of the control.” And for him, we worked on this for several hours where we actually had incremental things that he felt he could do. Things that he could just let go of over time to allow more passion into his life. And it actually springs up.

You’ll find this in yourself. I’ve been fortunate to be working with this, because I was somebody who had to have control in my early 20s. Now here I am in my early 40s and I’ve done all kinds of work, from meditation retreats to going down to the Amazon rainforest and working with a shaman, to doing plant medicines here in the United States. Areas that allow me to bring more passion throughout my life. More passion to the people that I serve and to the world. So I can help make this world a better place. And when I leave it, that hopefully I leave behind a better place. A lot of that, for me, was letting go of control and allowing passion to shine through.

So if you’re looking to find your passion, or to have more passion in your life, the first thing that I’m gonna recommend is grabbing your journal and writing out those areas that you feel you have to have control in. Be honest with yourself. We tend to lie to ourself more than anybody else. But this is a critical moment, to be honest with yourself. And you can ask the people around you. In these daily growth acts I often ask you to share this with three people that you want to have conversations that matter. Ask them what areas they think that you want to have control in. And once you identify those areas, now you have to figure out a way of letting go to let passion flow through you. To actually let it really, really come through you.

That allows you to stimulate passion in all areas of your five to thrive. Not only your business but also your personal life. The business and personal life just bleed together. As business owners, you often think … and I did too, that we could separate these compartments. My business life and my personal life. Doesn’t work. Never has, never will. Let it shine through. Let your passion shine to grow not only your business but also the people around you.

That’s it for me today. Go over to authorofyourownstory.com. Get the latest tips, tricks and techniques delivered right to your inbox. And make sure you check out the Author of Your Own Story University, where we talk about passion, control, getting more out of life on a regular basis at a much deeper level than we’re able to do here. And I’d love to have you as a member of the university. There is an application process, but go ahead and fill out your application. There’s no change to fill out the application itself, but it allows you in. You can join others just like you that are on their journey. I will see you tomorrow. Go out and inspire someone simply by being the author of your own story.

What Is The Quality Of Your Life?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6566205/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now I’m fortunate enough to actually be a mentor and coach to some of the best life coaches in the world. Now people as me, why would you coach coaches, why do they have a coach? Well of course, if you are a coach you need a mentor. You need somebody else to keep you accountable and to coach you and to raise the bar. I have coaches myself and mentors as well, but the point is when I was talking to one of these coaches, this is a woman who trains people at the highest levels, and I asked her, how are things going?

Just typical intro conversation you have with anybody really, right. I asked her how things were going? She said, “Things are great Doug, things are absolutely great. Business has never been better. Relationships are good.” And she said it in this monotone tone. I said, “That’s interesting, you’re saying things are great but your emotional state that I’m getting from you isn’t the same.” She paused for a second. She said, “But things are great. Business has never been better Doug and all these things are amazing in my life.” That’s what I told her. I said, “Do you really feel happy?” There was a pause and the answer was “No.” I said, Look, when we look at things, your state of life begins with an emotion, emotion equals meaning. Emotion equals the meaning we apply to life. It’s the foundation. If you’re not happy emotionally, then there are issues.

You can be as successful as anybody in the world. I train and coach and mentor some very wealthy people, so I can tell you, money does not equal happiness. You’ve heard it before. I can tell you again. Now it’s nice to have, but the happier you are the more success you will have. That I’ve seen time and time again. Meaning equals emotion and emotion equals life. This is a formula I got from Tony Robbins a long time ago, and I’m not sure where he got it. Maybe he came up with it on his own, but it works. It’s the meaning we associate to things right. We can associate different things. For example, I have a business partner and we lost a big client and it was one of those things, it’s like wow, that’s horrible, but we saw it as an opportunity. We said, “Wow, that frees up so much time.”

And in a conversation in a course of two hours, he and I, going back and forth, we took that and made it mean that there was more opportunity for us to grow and we launched, catapulted I would say, a new program that we’ve been wanting to do because now we had the free bandwidth to do it. It was such a weight lifted off our shoulders. He turned to me and said, “Doug, wow. This is the best things that’s happened to our business.” And I agree. The reason we were able to do that is we took what it meant, what it meant to lose this client and changed it to opportunity. Now we could’ve got depressed, in fact, in my early twenty’s I would’ve been pulling my hair out, stressed. What did I do wrong? Trying to figure it out. Making myself wrong for the situation. In fact with this particular client, we reached out and said, “Hey, why? What happened?” And they said, “Well actually there’s a couple services that I need that you can’t offer,” and they were right. They did need them and we don’t offer them and never will.

So it was actually nothing to do with us. Again in my twenties, I would’ve made it mean that I was bad, I wasn’t as good as I thought I was and I wasn’t providing the service. My company wasn’t as capable as we wanted to be, but the truth is it had nothing to do with our company and nothing to do with me and nothing to do with our capability. Now fast forward to today. I just changed the meaning to mean something that I wanted it to mean. Something that fit into my story and out of that came a new product or a new service that we’ve already launched, that’s already successful. This has only been a week. It’s an amazing story. The point is, just like I was asking this coach, or talking to him, how are you doing, what meaning are you applying to your life. So what I invite you to do is grab your journal, write out your five to thrive and look in those areas. Are there any areas in there that you’re not excited about? What does that mean to you?

Maybe weight loss is a common thing that people reach out to me about and tell me, “Hey I wanna lose ten pounds.” Or fifteen pounds, or whatever it is. Then they write down and their zigzagging. They’re going up, they’re going down, they’re going up, they’re going down. What does that mean to you? When you step on the scale, and you see that you’ve gained a pound or two pounds or whatever it is, what meaning? Are you making yourself wrong? Is that bad? What meaning are you applying to it? Now I’m gonna invite you to change that up. So if we’re saying that emotions equal life, and the meaning you apply to things equal your emotional state, then what you wanna do is change your meaning. By shifting the meaning of things, you’re able to change your emotional state which means you can change your life.

That’s it for me today. Share this with at least three people that you want to have conversations that matter. If someone shared this with you, just know that they respect you and want you to grow with them. They’re on their path and they believe that you are on your path. Congratulations to you. This is a huge, huge compliment. Of course, go over to authorofyourownstory.com. Get on the newsletter so you can get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your inbox. Go out and have an amazing day and remember your meaning actually dictates your emotion and your emotion dictates your life, so whatever happens to you today, make it mean something that actually serves you.

The World Of Comparison

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6560932/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Oftentimes in the past, I used to find myself comparing myself to others. In the area of fitness and health, I would look around and I thought of myself as an athlete. You can joke about it all you want. I played sports pretty competitively. And even on the field, the soccer field … soccer was my game … I would compare myself. Am I as good enough? Am I as fast as this other guy? Am I as strong? Am I as tough on the ball? I would always be comparing myself.

And at the end of the end, there was always someone who was faster than me, or somebody else on the field who was just stronger than me, or somebody else on the field who could kick the ball further than I could. I was always in a losing battle because I was picking little micro-segments to compare myself with different people.

In the area of business, I did this, as well. There was a business owner who had more clients than I did or a business owner who was making more money than I was or a business owner who was taking more vacations. Or perhaps it was in relationships when I was dating. Maybe it was somebody else who had a better-looking girlfriend or his girlfriend was nicer and treated him better than I did.

Whatever it was. I was comparing myself in all these micro-segments in my life, and just really getting depressed. Because when you compare yourself to other people, you really don’t know their story. This is why it’s Author of Your Own Story because your story is going to be different than mine. If you compare yourself to me, you don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, and maybe it’s not what you want. Maybe you don’t my life of the digital nomad where I’m traveling anywhere I want to. Maybe I have a family and you just don’t want one. Whatever it is.

When we live in the world of comparison, it only sets us up for depression and failure. There’s always going to be someone or something that’s perceived to be better. Now if you’re going to compare, compare yourself to your previous self. This is a great way of doing it. I would say, when I’m talking to a potential client who wants to work with me personally on a coaching basis or with one of my coaches, the thing that I most often hear is, “I’m in the same place today that I was a year or two years ago” or “I feel stuck.” Really what they’re saying is I haven’t grown. I haven’t grown at the level that I know I’m capable of. And that’s why I’m willing to invest time, money and energy into a high-level coach, someone who’s going to push me and pull me into that direction.

But asking you right here, right now, compare yourself only to your former self. By comparing yourself to others, you just set yourself up for failure, and again, you don’t know that person’s path. You don’t know that person’s journey, and you don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

You see, when I was comparing myself on the soccer field, for example, I was comparing myself to someone who was faster than me … which was easy to do, by the way, because most people were faster than me … but when I was comparing myself, that person who was faster than me wasn’t as strong as I was. I was stronger than they were and I was able to push them off the ball. But then when I compared myself to the person who was stronger than me, I was actually faster than them.

When you look at this as a comparison level, you just don’t know. Or maybe they were just all around a better athlete, but they didn’t know how to run a business. Or maybe they had a bad relationship. Or maybe they just were better than me. It didn’t matter. When I compared myself to myself and tried to be 1% better, that gave me a level that I could always keep rising, because I know my journey and I knew where I was. And I invite you to do the same.

I’m going to ask you to grab your journal. Write out your five to thrive and where you are in there and have you been improving incrementally over the past six months? If the answer is yes, I applaud you and keep it up. Don’t compare yourself to others. Just look back at your own progress. Hopefully, you’re doing the 90 Day Game. If you don’t know what the 90 Day Game is, go ahead and shoot us a message at Author of Your Own Story, and we’ll let you know. There’s also something in the Seven Day Jump Start to being the author of your own story, that covers the 90 Day Game. Now don’t compare yourself with those three people, because you’re only comparing yourself to your former self. You’re only comparing yourself to your former self. I’ll say it again. Make sure you’re doing that.

Do You Invest In Yourself?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6560807/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I was talking to a young entrepreneur, someone who was very successful at an early age, made millions of dollars before turning 20. Fantastic story and a brilliant person. And in the conversation that I was having with him, what we started talking about were investments, right? He asked for financial investments.

Now, this is not an area I’m an expert in, by any means, luckily I coach some people who are, so I was able to refer him off there. But I asked him a question. I said, “How are you in your life? If you were to rate your success, but success in your life the way that you would describe it?”

He said, “Yeah, gosh Doug, on a scale of 1 to 10, I’d probably give myself a 4.” Now, I was taken aback by this, because by all accounts, this person was well-published, most people would know who this person was.

Just in the conversations that we’re having, you would think, wow, he’s super successful. And then I asked him why. I said, why don’t you? Why’d you give yourself a 4 out of other scales? He said, “Geez, I just don’t feel fulfilled. I’ve hit all these goals, but I don’t really feel like I’m very fulfilled. Business? Wow. 10 out of 10, no problem. Wealth? 10 out of 10. Not a problem at all there, Doug. I have lots of friends, but for some reason, I just don’t feel that fulfilled.”

I said, “Well, geez, when’s the last time you invested in yourself, whether it be a really nice vacation for yourself or invested in a coach, a mentor, or invested in something that’s going to better you?” And he sat there and paused.

He said, “You know what? It’s probably been since I was 18.” Now, he’s much older now, so it’s been many, many years. And I can’t give away his age, because it may give away who he is, and I want to respect his privacy.

And when we started talking about it, it was like, well, why don’t you invest in yourself? It’s like, yeah, I give away six figures in charity all the time. I do things for my staff and my employees, but I don’t invest in myself.

He’s like, “That’s interesting, I never thought of it that way.” I thought, geez. Out of all the investments that you have, in your businesses, in your financial vehicles that you have, and you have millions of dollars and all of these investments, did you spend time carefully planning these? Did you spend time thinking about the future with these?

He’s like, “Oh, absolutely. You know, with my investments,” the reason that we were having this conversation, “I’m very strategic. I read about it every single day. I monitor my money and my finances, but I also do this with my business. I’m always in it, just making sure it’s right, making sure it has a plan and it’s always being accounted for.”

I said, “Geez. Why haven’t you done this with yourself?” And he paused and said, “You know what? I just never simply thought of it.”

So I’m going to ask you just like I asked him: when is the last time you invested in you? In bettering yourself? You see, money comes and goes. I’ve worked with some of the most successful people in the world, and many of them have made hundreds of millions of dollars and then bankrupt. Many have made their money and then lost it, time and time again. It comes and goes. Businesses get built and burn down, but something that someone can never take from you is your own personal growth, your own knowledge.

So I’m going to ask you today: where are you investing in yourself? Right? If you go out to happy hour and you buy drinks for somebody, you’re spending $200, $300 in one night, but why don’t you invest money in yourself? Hire a coach. Get a mentor. Take a course. You know? Go on a vacation. Do something for yourself, but do something to enhance your growth.

It’s something that I look at all the time and I know at Author of Your Own Story, it’s something that we encourage. Now, if you’re looking for something, let me know. We have the Author of Your Own Story University, we designed it specifically for people that want a monthly kind of gym membership, where they’re getting live coaching at a highest level possible.

So that could be an option for you. Whatever you do, do something to invest in yourself, you’re worth it and you deserve it.

That’s it for me today. As always, go over to AuthorOfYourOwnStory.com, where you can get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques. Sign up for the newsletter and share this with three people you know so you can build conversations that matter. Ask them: what are they doing currently to invest in themselves?

And you might be surprised. You might get some great ideas that inspire you, or you might be surprised that they haven’t done it either. Maybe they haven’t invested in themselves. Maybe they’ve spent the last 20, 30, 40 years investing in other people, other things that just deteriorate. Right?

A new TV. Get rid of it. Right. Invest in yourself. That’s it for me today. I will see you tomorrow. As always, go out and inspire someone simply by being the author of your own story.

And What Else?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6559077/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

And what else? So I’ve been coaching high-performance people and successful business owners for a very, very long time. Now I’ve done it in different realms. But one of the things I’ve learned is that people don’t give you their deepest answer first, right. And we kind of all know this, but if I were to ask you a question whether it be surface level or deep. Typically, you’re going to give me the answer that your façade or your mask is going to put out. Now you don’t do this consciously usually or maybe you do sometimes in networking type situations. But most people just give their initial answer. So a coaching tip you can use, right you can use this with your family, your friends, your loved ones, your employees etc. Is asking the question what else?

So for example, I was actually asked to come into a coaching session where I was with a business owner and his star employee. Basically, an employee at a level that he was brought into as a partner for his business. And he wanted me to come into that meeting just because I have a tendency, I’ve done this for a long time, to coach the two of them to make sure they’re on the same page and if there was anything that I saw for insights that I could bring to the table.

Now what I did is I simply asked what else? That was the biggest question. So when asking this employee, who is now becoming a partner. I said, “Hey, is there anything that you want to bring up in this conversation that hasn’t been spoken about?” Simple question, right? And so what he said is he brought up one point. He said, “The only thing I have to say here is I have one question regarding when we can review this. And that’s it that’s the only thing I want to know.” So that question was answered. It was a 90-day review. And then he looked fine like everything was done. And the business owner said, “Great, we’re done here.” I said, “No actually what else?” And then the employee looked and said, “Well actually there’s another thing, you know that I hadn’t talked about that was really important.” And this ended up being a very important topic that if they hadn’t had an agreement on this, could have actually ruined this relationship that they’ve had for many years.

And then I asked what else? And I repeated this process about six or seven times til finally the person looked at me and said, “I don’t think there is anything else, that’s it.” I said, “Great, fantastic I’m glad we got to the bottom of that.” Now the business owner chuckled a little bit because he knew exactly what I was doing because I’ve been training him for the last six months to be able to do this. Now I was training him to do it, not only with his employees and staff but also in his marriage. You see a lot of business owners and a lot of people, relationships are really tough or can be. So he was having a problem in his marriage. So I asked him, I said, “Hey look, here’s one thing that you can do. Just try this on, you know I realize I’m not a marriage counselor by any means. But I’ve done a lot of training, mostly to fix my own issues. But then to carry it on with my clients.”

I said, “Simply ask your wife in conversations what else?” He said, “Doug you know that’s going to be so obvious. She’s going to see right through that.” I said, “Well if you’re doing it with a good intention. A good intention of really wanting to know the depths of her. Just try it and it won’t be a big deal. If she sees it, just tell her you’re doing it because you want to know more because that’s the truth.” And so he had been trying it. He came back to me just amazed. And said, “Wow, she’s opened up. It really has brought us so much closer and it has really connected the two of us.” And just a simple question. And yeah, guess what? Neither the employee or his spouse knew that he was doing this.

It’s a simple technique and it’s not manipulative. You’re actually using it to bring out more in someone, to give them the space to communicate. It’s critical. So I invite you to try this and I want to hear your results. So many of you email me or find me on social media and shoot me messages and let me know what’s going on with you.
