The Spotlight Effect

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5861391/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

The spotlight effect … well, each time when you go into a social situation or you’re thinking about making a big decision, what naturally occurs to most of us is what’s called “the spotlight effect”. That’s where we think that everybody is looking on us. They’re looking at us and they’re concentrating on the things that we’re doing and the ways that we’re behaving. When the truth is this is just a way that you limit yourself from actually achieving your potential.

When you think about it, this was a survival mechanism that was put into our psyche so we could live in tribes, so we could survive by being one of the tribe and not standing out, so we wouldn’t draw attention upon ourselves. When the truth, in this day and age, when we have all our basic needs met, the spotlight effect really is preventing you from becoming the author of your own story. Now, if you think everybody’s watching you, everybody’s paying attention to what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, they’re criticizing you, you’re greatly mistaken. And the reason is that everybody has a spotlight effect. Right?

So, when you’re in a social situation, you’re thinking, “Jeesh. You know, is everybody looking at me? Is my hair okay? Am I dressed all right? You know, am I walking? Am I standing up tall? Am I representing my best self?” Remember, everybody is thinking something similar. So, they’re actually not focused on you at all. When you can adapt that mentality and realize that the spotlight effect isn’t actually on you, and each person is having their own spotlight, it gives you the freedom to break out of the restraints and become more of the author of your own story. So, what I want you to do today is go through your daily life, after listening to this, and imagine the spotlight effect.

Now, I want you to imagine that everybody that you encounter or come across, whether it be in the grocery store or in the boardroom, is having some sense of that spotlight effect occurring for them in that moment. And then, I want you to break away from that and try something different. Notice those subconscious thoughts, a little ego talking to you, that’s telling you stuff like, “Oh wow. What do I look like? Am I not dressed right? Oh jeez, I shouldn’t of wore sweats going to the grocery store. Or, here I am in the boardroom and I forgot my tie,” whatever it may be for you.

What I want you to do is realize what those thoughts are, and then when you get an opportunity, as soon as you get an opportunity, write those down. Now, if you’re in the boardroom, type ’em up, put ’em on your phone. If you’re at the grocery store, you can do the same thing. And the reason we wanna write these thoughts down is we wanna recognize what our subconscious mind is saying so we can flip the script on it. We also wanna recognize, during those times, to take that five-second rule. Remember? Five, four, three, two, one, and then switch it. Make a conscious decision to realize … and I like to laugh at it. Whenever I realize the spotlight effect is happening to me, I laugh. And so I realize that that’s happening. I give it a giggle. Right? ‘Cause it’s funny to me that I actually am programmed this way. And I realize that nobody else around me cares what I’m doing, they just don’t.

I’m not that important. At least, not to them. I’m important to myself. And so, once you’ve realized, in that moment, that you have these subconscious programming, this language, or record playing in your head giving you negative feedback, you can go ahead and laugh at it, which is what I do. Or do anything you want to break that. And then, flip it. And be laughing … you know what? No one cares about my sweats. Here I am at the grocery store and I’m so comfortable, it is amazing. And walk around, and then you’ll realize that spotlight effect … people are now looking at you and what they’re thinking is, “Man, that person is comfortable. Wow. Why am I dressed up for the grocery store? Oh, I can’t believe I did that.”

So the spotlight effect, often times, brings us into conformity. And we also know that change happens outside of your comfort zone. And so, when you’re going through this phase of a spotlight effect, really recognize that nobody cares what you’re doing. And this is gonna give you that extra edge when allowing you to push the boundaries a little bit and step into your … outside, excuse me, step outside of your comfort zone and into uncomfortability, where you could actually achieve greatness. And this is where it’s gonna open you up. It’s gonna open up to new paradigms of possibility for you, and allow you really to enjoy that moment.

So, go out and seize the moment. Recognize the spotlight effect. Journal anytime you have something that comes up, so you can recognize that. And really pay attention to that programming, so you can flip the script. And that’s how you can go out and be the author of your own story. That’s it for me today. Project Manage Your Life

Today, I was doing employee interviews where I actually talked to my employees about how they’re doing in the business. What I have them do is fill out kind of a long form where they’re doing checkboxes. Am I doing very good, good, or needs improvement, or not necessary in this particular category for many lists that are on there, and then I have a lot of questions. Of course, if you listen to any of these daily growth hacks, you could probably imagine I go way beyond just business to really know what’s going on in my staff and my team’s lives.

What came up in this last interview that I had was really a lack of focus and a lack of determination or timing. This person was procrastinating to the last minute to get things done, and kudos to them for being honest. They were honest with their boss and open with me about the idea that they were actually always waiting until the last minute and sometimes even forgetting to check which task had certain due dates on them.

As we started having this conversation, what came up was they were actually doing this in other areas of their lives, as well. How many times do we forget to go to the grocery store for our loved one or different things that we just need to do on a daily basis, or have you been like me where you made a list of, “Hey, if I get these things done on a regular, consistent basis, my relationship is gonna go through the roof, my body’s gonna go through the roof, my mind’s gonna go just where I want it to go. It’s gonna expand in ways that you’ve never probably even imagined.”

What about your business? Oh, my gosh. Are there certain things that you need to do on a daily basis, maybe a weekly basis, that if you did consistently, would just grow your business exponentially? Well, I know, for me, this is certainly true, and these are in all areas. I’m going to be, admit that I’m kind of a typical guy, so what I’ve had to do is actually set reminders in my project management software for even areas of my relationships. This is where I recommended this particular to do, and it’s exactly what I do, is I actually use a project management software system for my life.

If you’re in the Author of Your Own Story group, especially if you’re in Author of Your Own Story University, we actually have a systemized process that we use extremely successfully where you can actually project manage your story. What it allows you to do is really make sure you’re getting those little things done, hitting those singles to drive runs in, so to speak, in your life and allowing you to become more of the Author of Your Own Story.

Oftentimes, we have these unconscious roadblocks that are holding us back, and what we want to do is identify those. Once we’ve identified those, what do we need to do to take that to the next level and create a habit? Of course, you’ve got discipline. Discipline is one of those buzzwords that goes around a lot, and you’re hearing it a lot right now in the business and personal development industries. I’m hearing it on podcasts and people speaking when I attend seminars, but my experience is discipline people are disciplined, and there’s the rest of us, and what do the rest of us do? Well, we create habits, and we create habits and systems of checks and balances that allow us to become disciplined.

What I did many, many years ago is I got a project management software system, and I made a list of those things that I need to do regularly. One of them is check in with my wife. Sounds brainless. Of course, you just check in with your wife, Doug, but it wasn’t for me. I would forget. I would get caught up in the day to day, growing my businesses, spending time with her, but I forgot to say certain things. I forgot to check in with her in the way that meant something to her, speak her language. What I did is I put that on my project management system. Give my wife a compliment and tell her I love her each day.

Every day, when I go into my project management system, I have my list of tasks. One of them is to give my wife a compliment, and each time I do, she looks so surprised and it really takes her back because I know that speaks to her love language, and once I figured that out, it’s just something I do. This is not my natural love language, so I need a reminder, and it’s become a habit. It has become something that I don’t need to be reminded of any more, but at the beginning, honestly, I did. I’m certainly not perfect, and that’s what led me on this quest of personal development and business development was to get better.

Just like you, there are certain things that you’re probably forgetting in the areas of your mind, body, soul, relationships, and business. What are those little things you’re forgetting? What are those little things that really move the needle in those areas? Maybe for your mind, it’s simply reading an hour a day and maybe it’s just not on the top of your mind because you’re not a big reader, and many of us aren’t, but maybe that’s for you, so maybe you need to set a reminder to check off.

Something else you want to look at with a project management software is what areas, what are those tasks that are weeks or months overdue that you’re just not getting to? Then you can ask yourself why. I can’t get into the nuts and bolts on exactly how I set this up here because these daily growth hacks are meant to be short and to the point, but if you’re in the Author of Your Own Story University, we go through this in depth to actually lay out your story and your plan so you can get around this. Of course, you could do this with your own. You can use Teamwork. You can use Asana. You can use Basecamp. There’s tons of project management software out there. The important thing is that you actually start it, fill out your tasks, your dailies, your weeklies, your monthlies, your quarterlies, those little things that you get to do.

For my employee, one of them checked daily the project management. Have it notify you. Have it send it to your phone and email you. Number two for him was actually set focus goals. I wanted him to get feedback from the rest of the team on a monthly basis, so what I had him do, set a monthly reminder on your project management software to ask for feedback from the rest of the team. This wasn’t something that occurred to him naturally. It wasn’t something he would naturally do or probably felt comfortable doing, but now it’s a task. Now it’s a task that goal-oriented people are going to see, they’re going to go, “Shoot, this is something I need to do. Check it off.”

Again, if you see it going to the red or the overdue, what you want to do is ask yourself, “Why am I avoiding doing this? Why am I not doing these things?” Could be working out for you. Why are you not working out? Why has it been two weeks? What is the fear behind it? It’s not knowledge. You know how to work out. Maybe you don’t do it as well or you don’t know how to do a clean and jerk or whatever, but you know how to put on shoes and go for a run or walk, so there are things like that, and if you do have limiting factors, like don’t have a facility to go to, well, those are things you can solve, so really the key here is adding these items to your project management.

Here’s what I want you to do right now. Grab your journal. Write out your Five to Thrive, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business, and what I want you to list are the two things that, if you do them consistently, would actually move the needle towards your goals, to you becoming the Author of Your Own Story. Once you’ve done that, now you’ve got to find a way to keep yourself accountable. A project management software system is an easy way of doing it, and many have free trials above and beyond just one project. You can usually have two to five. You can actually have Five to Thrive. You can have categories for all of these or you can use your life as one particular project, and that’s how I started off when I was doing it.

What I want you to do then is set the dates and times those are due. Are they due every Monday? Are they due every day? Are they due monthly? I want you to monitor how you’re doing with this project management. How are you actually staying on top of it, and which items are you letting fall by the wayside? Then what I want you to do, once you’ve got that, set in your project management software one month from today, one month to come back to it and actually revisit this and see which items are in red. Which items have you let go by the wayside?

Then the next part of your journaling activity is to actually sit down and figure out why because once you figure out why, you can start reprogramming your brain, the software inside, that allows you to take it to the next level, finding out what those barriers are, those unconscious barriers that prevent us from actually doing those things we know we should be doing. Finding those out and creating systems of overcoming those is a key step to becoming the Author of Your Own Story.

That’s it for me today. Go over to AuthorofYourOwnStory.com. Get on our email list right now. That’s the only way you’re going to get tips, tricks, and insights delivered right to your inbox, as well as insights. We just interviewed Chris Tarzan Clemens. It’s only going to be up live for two days. After that, it’s only going to be accessible to the Author of Your Own Story University members in its entirety. We will give you a chunk of it, but in its entirety will only be there. Chris shares his secrets to his success and what allowed him to truly live life on his own terms.

If you’re not on the email list, you’re just not going to know about it and you’re not going to get it and, even worse, you’re not going to be able to attend, and these little nuggets of information from people that have been going through this will help you, again, take time and compress it, take five years of Chris’ mistakes and compress those and allow you to leapfrog that, and that’s what I want for you. I don’t want you to go through the hardships that many of us have done to become the authors of our own story, and I want you to take it to the next level, so get on that email address. Email list, excuse me, right now.

Of course, share this with a loved one. This is a great tip. Find out what they think about it. I would love for you to have that conversation. I don’t get anything out of these other than sharing little tips with you. I hope you can share it with other people and grow conversations that matter. That’s it for me. Go out and be the Author of Your Own Story.

Be Coachable

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5853837/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, today, I want to talk about being coachable and what does it actually mean to be coachable? Well, many of you probably have a coach and if you don’t have a coach in one or multiple areas of your life, I highly recommend it.

A coach was somebody that can show you the way, that can show you the path and it’s also somebody that can serve as an accountability partner for you and somebody that doesn’t have skin in the game in a sense that they don’t have any emotional ties. They can tell you the real deal. Now, I remember having coaches all my life, and I still do today. Most of my coaches now are in different areas but I remember being young and having a soccer coach, right? I played traveling soccer. I played soccer all the way up into college and whenever your coach would give you recommendations or things to do, me as a player, I would take that to heart and I would actually execute it. I wasn’t the fastest, I wasn’t the strongest, I wasn’t the best by any means but oftentimes, I rose to the top of a lot of the soccer teams I played on and became the captain and I also did really well. One of the reasons I did so well is I was coachable. I would take feedback from the other players from the other people especially when I ask for advice. That’s a critical step.

Now, in the business right now, I do the same thing. I have a business coach and when my business coach gives me things to do, they give me exercises and they give me advice, I follow it. Why else would you hire a coach unless you’re going to actually take their advice into consideration? What shocks me when we talk about being coachable is how few people actually are coachable. They’ll sign up for a course. They will listen to a podcast or show. They’ll hire a coach. They’ll ask a mentor questions or for guidance but oftentimes, they don’t follow through with the actions. They don’t do what that person has actually shown them. They don’t actually follow the step by step methodology of the course. That’s what I’m talking about when I say be coachable. That’s your ability to actually take direction from somebody else.

Now, of course, you don’t have to do everything people say. That would just be ridiculous but if you’re hiring a coach for their expertise, if you’re taking a course because you want a particular outcome that you don’t possess the skills to get right now, then you need to be coachable. You need to follow that course on a step by step methodology. Until you actually understand, can produce the outcome, then you can manipulate it and change it and make it your own. This is the same that goes for hiring a coach, whether you have a business coach, a relationship coach, a personal trainer or anything along those lines or if you’re taking a course.

If you’re taking a course of marketing or you’re taking a course on how to play the guitar, I mean you wouldn’t walk in and have a piano teacher sitting down next to you and tell you exactly how they want you to play the keys on the piano and then just do something totally different. It would be where you’d say, “Gee. That’s just crazy,” but how many times do people buy courses or hire coaches or go into mastermind groups or whatever it may be and they just don’t become coachable? Now, the people that become coachable and the people who actually follow through the plans typically are the ones that become the most successful. The rest of the people come with excuses, right? I didn’t have time to do this. I didn’t have the money or I’d try the shortcut or I’m running multiple businesses, whatever it may be.

The key is being coachable and oftentimes, my experience is the people that are the least coachable are the people that think they know everything, right? In sports, it was the most gifted athlete, so oftentimes, the most gifted natural athletes were the least coachable. As I got into college and was playing sports myself in college, I noticed that those really gifted athletes that I played with in high school fell off the wagon. They actually just didn’t actually end up making the team. Coaches would kick them out because they weren’t as good anymore. Their natural talent only took them so far and then you had the other people who weren’t that good like me that would just follow the coach’s orders, not orders but recommendations I should say, and actually became coachable. They actually listened.

I’ve been doing these for courses like I’ll take a course and I’ll follow it to the end. I just recently read a book that my business partner recommended called The Pumpkin Patch Plan and there wasn’t really anything really new for me in that book. However, they have several exercises that they recommend going through. What I did, even though this wasn’t new materials, I printed out all of the exercises and I ran through them. The reason I did that is that I took the time to read and digest this book and here, this person is showing, saying, “Hey, look. Do these exercises for your business that will help you,” and so, I’m willing to do that. I’m willing to take that next step and see if I can actually up-level my business in this case, as well as my communication with my business partner so we have a common language.

That’s what I’m just talking about being coachable. What I wanted you to ask yourself is where in your life are you not being coachable? This most often occurs to me when I’m talking to people, in the area of their body, relationships, and business, those three areas in particular. These are three areas that I often focus on when working with clients of my own. When clients of my own don’t become coachable and sometimes, they do resist, we fire them. You let them go because if someone’s not willing to work hard and really willing to do it, it’s not fulfilling for them. They’re not going to achieve those results. I recommend you look at this with your own clients as well.

That’s it for me today, just a quick tip and a quick thought is where in your life are you not being coachable? Where in your life are you seeking advice, are you seeking things, information or processes or taking a course or reading a book but you’re not follow through? You’re not following through the step by step process that’s being laid out or the advice that you’re being given or you’re basically just not doing the work. You’re not being coachable.

What I want you to do is grab your journal, write your five to thrive and in each of those areas, just be real with yourself. Are you being coachable in your mind or your body, your soul, your relationships, your business? We’ve given you tips for these daily growth hacks. We’ve had over 200 at this point and the tips that we give you are coachable tips or things that you can actually put into work. If you haven’t done any of these, then you’re obviously not coachable but if you have, then you’re on your right path but if you’re like me, there are other areas that I even resist and it’s good exercise for me to wonder where am I not being coachable or where could I be more coachable like where can I really put out that effort?

I know with my coach, this last week, I didn’t get everything done that I said I was going to get done, so I was out of integrity there and I wasn’t being coachable. In fact, I told my coach, I said, “Hey, look. If I were you, I would fire me because I’m not doing the work and that wasn’t the agreement that we had.” Obviously, there’s financial compensation that goes back and forth but your word’s your bond. I said I would do it and I know how unfulfilling it is when people don’t and I had a bunch of excuses and they were all valid but at the same time, I didn’t do what I was going to say and so in that instance, I wasn’t coachable.

I want you guys to think about it. It came up to me and I wanted just to pass it onto you. Write in your journal, your five to thrive and where are you not being coachable. I also want you to celebrate where you are being coachable, so if you have a personal trainer and you’re doing what he or she says, hats off to you. That’s great. You should be following that advice of that individual. If you don’t like the advice that person is giving you or you don’t trust them, then you need to find somebody else. You need to find somebody else to be a mentor or a coach for you. Then, always look at multiple coaches in your life. You probably have them. Hopefully, you have a coach or multiple coaches that can help you in your five to thrive as well.

Of course, as always, go over to authorofyourownstory.com where you can get the latest tips, tricks and techniques right in your inbox sent right to your iPhone if you like or any Android device. You’re Losing $50,000 A Year

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5853052/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, this is a conversation I have often. How many times are you actually wasting time during your day? Now, when I have this conversation, of course, it’s usually over somebody’s goals. What I’m talking is about how much time is actually spent on social media, on Facebook just catching up on what people or doing or on YouTube watching videos that you don’t even care about, in fact, videos that leave you less inspired when you walk away? These could be music videos or how-to videos or something else. Or TV, right? How often do you sit down to watch the news for an hour or watch your favorite show for two, three, four, five hours over the time? How are times you just not being efficient, kind of like twiddling your thumbs and finding yourself just walking around your house aimlessly?

Now, most people I talk to, it’s anywhere between four and eight hours, which I know if you’re hearing this and you actually haven’t thought about it sounds like a ton of time. It is. But when you actually track that time, for the average person it’s usually between four and eight that I talk to. I’m dealing with ultra high achievers. I would say for most of us is probably closer on the six. Now, I’m guilty of this too, of course. You know, my wife and I, we love different TV shows and we’ll sit down, we’ll watch them. As soon as one episode finishes, we’ll say, “Let’s watch the next one.” Then we’ll go on. Next thing you know, two hours are gone. You know, sometimes I walk away going, “Jeez, that wasn’t really quality time. We didn’t really have quality time together. We both had entertainment time.” Sometimes I find myself watching a show that I don’t even really care about. I mean, do you do that? You’re watching shows or you’re on social media really just to kill time or avoid doing the important. That’s really what we’re talking about.

You know, often times, when we’re actually doing these things, these things that are unimportant, checking Facebook or checking email repeatedly or whatever it may be, it actually makes us feel worse about ourselves. You know, this can also be TV shows. I know a lot of you out there who are entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs. You watch shows like Billions or Ballers because, you know, you get inspiration from those shows. Often times when I talk to you, really, you get inspiration but you also feel bad about yourself because you think you should be this award-winning actor or you should be this bestseller or you should be somebody who is killing it on the speaking circuit or personal development line. You know, you think you should be this number one person. This would be like me thinking I should be the best, you know, radio host or best voice or best videographer or something like that and not doing the work to do it and getting depressed. When you watch these shows, they remind you often of the things you’re not doing because you’re doing that to escape. You’re doing that as a part of escapism, to avoid doing the important things that you know you should be doing.

What does this equate to? If you’re doing this four hours a day, which for most, the average people I talk to is pretty much minimum when you track it. When I say track it, I’m using things like RescueTime. I usually have most of my clients get the RescueTime application. It’s free for the basic version. There’s other stuff out there, but it gives you a rough idea of what time you’re using. Now, RescueTime, unfortunately, doesn’t work for the iPhone and that’s where I know most of my clients and probably you and certainly me waste our time. It is alarming when you actually see what you’re doing on apps.

Let’s just say just for this example, you’re doing four hours. Four hours every day for a work week, that’s 20 hours in the work week. Let’s say that you’re making $20 an hour. Now, I know most of you are high achievers and you’re people that are becoming the author of your own story or maybe you’re already an author of your own story and you listen to this just to keep yourself on track. You know, we’re always resetting and course correcting. Let’s just say for argument’s sake you’re making $20 an hour. We’re not going to count in opportunity costs. We’re not going to count in how, if you’re younger and you make this money and you invest it, it’s going to be even more than 20. Again, I know most of you are making a lot more than $20 an hour. Even at $20 an hour, over 20 hours per week, you’re pretty much giving up $50,000 a year.

Again, we’re talking and some of these other factors that I’m talking about. That is to say, we’re actually factoring in some of those opportunity costs, excuse me when I got this number. We are factoring some of those opportunity costs that you’re missing on 20 hours. Now, for some people, that’s eight hours, which is a heck of a lot more. When you look at that over the course of a whole year, those are the opportunities that you’re missing. Now, the opportunity costs I was saying I wasn’t factoring in earlier, I’m sorry. Getting my math wrong. The point is those other opportunity costs that I’m not factoring in are the opportunities of things you could be doing with that time to make more money, to actually make more money that is vested in your goals and to make yourself just feel better.

Let’s just say you’re on a quest to be the author of your own story and you followed some of the suggestions that I’ve given you and maybe you’ve gone to authorofyourownstory.com and you’ve done the Seven Days to Becoming the Author of Your Own Story. On there, I ask you to do some very specific exercises. It’s seven days that are guided. During that time, you start writing out what you’re doing. You realize, “Gosh, I don’t have enough time in the day.” Not having enough time in the day is the number one excuse for fitness goals, it’s the number one excuse not to meditate, it’s the number one excuse not to get things done in business, especially rainmaking or making calls in business, and it’s the number one excuse in your relationships. “I don’t have enough time.”

If you could take back 20 additional hours, if I put 20 hours on your plate, that’s being conservative. Let’s say you’re somebody who spends a lot of time watching TV. You binge Netflix. You’ve seen Narcos and everything else. Now let’s double that and that’s 40 hours a week. That’s a full work week, double throughout a year. If you had that time, you could run another business. You could achieve those goals. You could read for an additional hour a day. You could meditate for an hour a day. That’s only two. You could spend an extra hour a day with your family. Four, let’s say you exercise an hour. That just takes up your basic four hours. You have that time and that opportunity. This is why I’m saying you’re wasting $50,000 a year doing the little stuff. Now, of course, there are always times that, you know, watching a movie or watching TV, there’s nothing wrong with that. I love movies. The idea is tracking this time allows to be specific and make a decision on whether you are wasting time or using that time wisely. That allows you control your destiny. It allows you to become the author of your own story.

What I want you to do is just pull out your journal. What I want you to do is start tracking. What are you doing and when are you doing it? Now, I want you to track for a short period of time. Now, if you’re ambitious and what I make my clients do is to track for 30 days. Let’s just start with a week. Just for a week, I want you to track your time. Every time you’re on Facebook, I want you to just denote how much time you’re on there or Instagram, even if it’s just the app itself or whatever you’re using. Maybe it’s reading the news. Maybe it’s reading The Wall Street Journal on your phone when you know you don’t need to. You’ve already got the basic news or whatever you need for your business. How much time are you watching Netflix or Hulu or Amazon Prime or just TV in general? How many times are you doing these mindless things? I want you to calculate that and I think you’re going to be surprised at what you find.

Once you have that, just tally it up and see if that is serving you to your higher purpose, serving you to be the man or woman that you know you can be. Once you have that list, now you can make some decisions. You can make some decisions on where you can add that time in. Then, what I want you to do after that is what I call the Dickens Method. Well, I don’t call it that, but it’s where I learned it to be. Look back. I want you to think two years from now, just even two years, of wasting that time, are you feeling good about yourself? What do you regret? Now, if you take that even further and say, “Hey, when I’m 80,” maybe you’re 80 now, but, “When I’m 80, looking back on my life, what did I want to do with that wasted time?” That’s if you feel it’s wasted, of course. “What could I have done? What could I have done more? Could I have spent more time with my kids, my family, my loved one? Could I have worked on my health, my wellness? Could I have worked on my wealth, my business? Could I have worked more on my spirituality?” That’s up to you to decide. I just want to give you the tools so you can make that decision, educate yourself, and do it from a place of power rather than just mindless action.

The Power Of Inspiration

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5847576/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, this is a quick tip, but something that’s really easy to do. We all know the power of inspiration, the power of inspirational thoughts, inspirational movies, inspirational images, yet how often do we lose these inspirations right after we see it? Maybe you see an inspirational image in a magazine or an inspirational movie, and then after leaving, a day, two, three, four days later you lose that inspiration. Well, inspiration comes and goes, but one quick thing that you can do, right here, right now, today, to increase your odds of getting inspired, is by adding inspirational images to your desktop as well as to your phone backdrop.

Now, if you have an iPhone you have a lock screen and a back screen. Now, if you have a laptop, of course, you have a background to that laptop. Now, often times when I’m talking to a client I’ll have him do a screen share with me. I’ll talk to him first about what inspires them, what drives them, what is the passion. When you are tired or you don’t wanna go anymore, what actually moves you to move forward? Now, often times this can be family, right? This could be children, this could be loved ones. But also, for a lot of people, it’s the sense of travel, adventure; it’s that trip to Paris or going overseas, backpacking through Asia, or it’s running a company as a digital nomad. Whatever it is for you.

But when I look at their computer screens, they often have an image of something totally different. They’ll have an image that they just think looked okay at the time. But yet, they’re seeing the background of their screen on a daily basis, often times 20 or more times in a day. Now, if you look at their iPhone, maybe it’s an Android, you know, maybe you have a cute picture of a puppy or something like that in the background, but why not change that to something that inspires you? Something that’s always in your mind.

And I think of it this way, how often are you just walking through your day and a random song from years ago pops in, and you just start singing it? The reason is, is repetition. You’ve repeatedly heard that song, and something triggered, something you saw or thought about triggered that memory, and now all of a sudden you’re singing the song from the ’80s. Maybe it’s The Go-Go’s, or maybe … Who knows what it is? But the point being is, it’s subliminal, and you can leverage this tactic, this use of repetition, to subliminally conscious your mind, and draw you towards something.

So maybe for me, it’s the Author of Your Own Story logo. I had that on my background because I wanted to inspire more people, I wanted to bring these little tips to the world. Yeah, I love training clients one on one, but I realize not everybody can do that, so this was my chance to do something about it. And of course I was running multiple companies, so I put the logo on the background of my screens I have three screens at my office, and I did that, and it just made me constantly in my mind, of like, “Yeah Doug, you can carve out an extra hour this week to do something for Author of Your Own Story, to help people move forward, to be pulled in the direction of their dreams.” And that worked for me.

And then, later on, I changed that inspiration. Now I have a picture of my wife and my beautiful child, and that inspires me, ’cause there’s often times that maybe I’m just a little tired, or I wanna go outside, and I have the flexibility of a free schedule, so I can go do kinda what I want when I want. But I’m just like you, I get distracted, or sometimes I have too much going on, I get overwhelmed. Maybe I’ve had too much coffee. And then I’m just like, “Ah, forget it, I’m gonna go do something else.” I close down my windows and there’s that picture of my beautiful wife and my beautiful child, and it reminds me of why I do what I do.

And so, then I can come up with the choice: what do I wanna do in this moment? Do I wanna go spend time with them, is that available to me at this moment, or do I wanna finish this project I’m working on, because that’s gonna free up more time, or more revenue, more money coming into our businesses, that we can go out and do more trips, or do more epic things. That gives me more inspiration to move forward. And I’ll shift that picture around; maybe next year, or next month, it might be something different that’s pulling me in that direction.

The point is, I have that repetition, where I’m seeing my phone every time someone calls, I see that image, or I’m on my computer working, I see that image, over, and over, and over again. Often times I’m probably not consciously recognizing the image, but by seeing it over and over again, it inspires me to take action. It is the song, so to speak, that plays in my head over, and over, and over again, with repetition. And the next thing you know, more often than not, I end up with those items. Whether it’d be a trip, I’ve put trips on my screen. Whether it’d be something that I actually really wanted, which was my sprinter van. I wanted a 4×4 sprinter van converted to the ultimate outdoor recreational office slash home, where I could go anywhere in this world with this van and do whatever I wanted; now I own it. It’s just absolutely amazing, the power of this can’t be understated, and I hope it works for you.

So pick your inspirational image, do a Google image search if you need to. Go to images.google.com, and go to Google images and search for an image that inspires you. Look for those key terms. If you need suggestions, go to the Author of Your Own Story group, so you just AuthorofYourOwnStory.com, click on community, and you’ll actually be able to talk to the community and get some inspirational ideas. Get some ideas that you can put on your screen, or maybe resources. Maybe somebody else has been on that safari to Africa and they can send you an image, and you can connect with them, thus furthering the conversation towards your goals.

That’s it for me today. Remember, go to AuthorofYourOwnStory.com, where you get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques, as well as exclusive videos and courses, just for our subscribers. Have a great day, and remember, go out and be the author of your own story.

ANTS

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5842702/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

So what the heck do I mean by ANTS? Well ANTS is simply an acronym for Automatic Negative Thoughts.

Now these are the thoughts that go on in our heads subconsciously when we’re driving, you know, taking a shower, or having a conversation with somebody and then all of a sudden you start remembering things from the past or you start thinking things, “Well jeez does this person think I’m not smart enough? I’m not good enough. I’m not rich enough.” Whatever it may be. They happen automatically.

So think of your mind, your mind is a supercomputer. And you know this is true. But what runs that supercomputer is your software. And your thoughts are your software, and so the key here is making sure that your software is running efficiently, smoothly, and is updated with the latest firmware. And so what I mean by that, oftentimes the software we run, the programming, or the way that we see things in our world are actually from childhood. It can be from high school and adolescence, but oftentimes they start even younger. And this could be something like a parent saying, “You shouldn’t cry.” And then you become very stoic, or it could be somebody saying, “Sports, soccer, you’re not that good. You shouldn’t be playing,” and then the rest of your life you have this programming, like, “I’m not good enough.” And that’s constantly running in your mind as you’re doing things.

Now, ironically, this happens with a lot of high performing people. They have these ANTS. And these ANTS are things that actually cause them to actually achieve, because these negative thoughts come up and they think, “Oh I’m gonna crush this.” Now what they haven’t done, or many of them haven’t done, is actually get rid of the ANTS. Just get rid of them. And so there are ways that you wanna do this, there are ways you wanna get rid of these automatic negative thoughts.

So one way, and we talked about this in a previous daily growth act, is as soon as you recognize an ANT, or an Automatic Negative Thought, I want you to count to five backward. So you have a thought, come up, and just go five four three two one. And then replace that negative thought with something that’s better. Something that serves you. And that’s the important thing right now. Because walking around and having a thought of “I’m not good enough,” for example. Or “I’m not smart enough to own my own business.” Or “to go out and be an author of my own story.” What that does is that’s gonna limit you, so each time you hit a barrier you’re gonna say, “Well of course, I’m not smart enough and that’s why I didn’t do that,” or “That’s why I wasn’t able to achieve,” or “That’s why I wasn’t able to travel like Doug is doing right now.”

So when you have those negative thoughts with something that does serve you. ‘Cause the truth is, is you are smart enough. You know what, you’re living in an age where we have technology, we have resources, and right now if you are listening to this or watching me on video, you actually have a resource that most people didn’t have previously. And you’re smart enough to access that resource, and that’s great. So with these ANTS, you’re gonna go ahead and come up with something positive. So, again, “I’m not smart enough.” Now, come up with at least five reasons that you are. Five things, right now. I’m able to utilize and leverage technology, that’s a big one. Good job. I’m able to hear, listen, and focus, that’s another one. So come up with five things that actually justify why you are smart. I know you can come up with those.

And so then what I want you to do is take it to another level, and use the work. The work is an actual great thing, it’s called the Judge my Neighbor worksheet. The Judge my Neighbor worksheet is something that was done by Byron Katy and I highly recommend checking it out. A simple worksheet that goes through that, and you can do that on yourself, and it’s really important to get rid of these ANTS and replace them with positive thoughts that allow you really to up-level and become the author of your own story.

Now I highly recommend, grab your journal right now, write out your five to thrive, your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business. We use this again ’cause it’s a holistic representation of you as a person, and what’s going on in your world. Now in each of these categories, I wanna have you write down something you know is a negative thought, something that comes up. So again for mind it could be, “I’m not smart enough.” For body it could be, “I’m too fat.” For soul it could be, “I don’t have the ability to mediate.” For relationships it could be, “I just always date the wrong people.” For business it could be something like, “I just never seem to make enough money.”

Right, those are just examples. Common ones that I hear all the time. Now if you can’t come up with them, ask a loved one, a spouse, a significant other of some sort, a family member, someone who knows you really well, a friend, a coworker, and ask them, “What are the things that you say all the time?”

Now, with full disclosure, and I’ve shared this before, one that my wife helped me point out was just, I always say, “I’m tired. Whew, so tired I’m running all these companies. We’re traveling all the time, taking care of the family. And playing a lot, and I’m just always tired.” And what I found when she put that out to me, is I had that ANT, right? That Automatic Negative Thought come up probably 20 to 30 times in a day, it was crazy. Blew my mind. I would have said, maybe I say it a couple times a week. But when I actually paid attention, I realized I was saying this about 20 to 30 times a day. And since then, what I’ve realized is the more I said it, the more tired I got. It was really weird, I lived into what I was saying.

And so, it’s the same thing with you. I changed that. I have more energy. I always have enough energy and abundance in my life, that allows me to do those things that I wanna do. Because, you know, really, I asked myself, Look if I’m tired and I won the lottery right now, if someone came up and said, “Hey you just won the lottery. You just won a hundred million dollars, Doug,” I would be jumping up and down, celebrating ’cause of all the things that I could do for other people, people that I love, then that means I have enough energy. Wow, okay, so that Automatic Negative Thought was just a limiting belief. And I wanna make sure you’re able to erase those.

So that’s just an example of something that I dealt with and I’m still trying to work through right now to reprogram my supercomputer. And I wanna help you do the same. So do that exercise. Never leave the site of a decision or an insight without actually taking action right away. So you’re driving in the car, if you’re watching this and you can’t actually do the work, so to speak, do one thing. Record a voice memo, actually write something down in your iPhone. Whatever it may be for you, make sure you take action, schedule it in the calendar to take action, whatever it is. And of course, share this with three people. By sharing this with three people, you’re gonna have accountability partners [inaudible 00:06:19] other people within your realm. Your circle of influence are gonna help you grow, at the same time you’re gonna help them as well. So I don’t take this lightly, make sure you’re sharing this with at least three people right here, right now.

That’s it for me today, remember go to Authorofyourownstory.com where you can get your latest tips, tricks, and insights right to your inbox as well as the special features that we’re rolling out. I wanna make sure you have access to those because as soon as we roll them out, most of them we’re only giving them a one week window where they’ll be free and available, and then we’re putting it actually to our private groups, those members only. So I wanna make sure you have it free, so only with the email will you have the notice of when that’s the week so you can actually utilize it, help you become the author of your own story. Have a great day.

Knowledge Is Not Power

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5840244/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, I’m not traveling with my family living the Author of My Own Story lifestyle, and so I apologize if you’re watching this and you’re seeing dimly lit lights or if you’re hearing this and you hear a baby crying or talking in the background. We’re having a great time with my family.

One of the topics that came up was knowledge is power. Now, for me at least, when I was a kid watching cartoons, there used to be a commercial that would come on and it used to say something like, “Knowledge is power.” Now, if you remember this, I know there’s a lot more to that, but that really stuck in my head, and they used to play it over and over again. Oh, that’s coming to me now. “It’s great to learn because knowledge is power.”

Now, we’re talking about what I have experienced over decades is knowledge isn’t power. Really, it’s action and knowledge combined together that gives you power. Knowledge itself is potential power. The reason I say this is how many times have you read a book, been inspired or gone to a seminar only to come home a week later and then just pumped and, a week later, just died off, and you just didn’t take action.

I’ve read countless books especially in my early 20’s and teens that I just didn’t take action on, or I’ve gone to seminars. I’d do this. Or I go to seminars and I’m just like, “Oh, this is great. I’ve learned something about my business. I’ve learned something about relationships, personal development, health, and wellness,” and just not taken action on it. This is a really, really, really good example of how knowledge can be potential power. Right? You go to these things, whether it be a corporate retreat or something else, and come back from it, you get expert advice.

Now, these daily growth hacks could be a perfect example for you. I hope they’re not, but maybe they are. Maybe this is your wake-up call. Maybe you hear one of these while you’re working out or driving or commuting on the train. I don’t know. I hear from a lot of you, so I know there are all kinds of different places, but you listen to this and you say, “Huh, that might be a good idea. I might actually try that,” and you get home and you don’t do anything. Your life takes over. Your husband, your wife, your kids, your roommates, whoever it is, starts talking about you and life just takes over and you just forget that actionable step.

This is why knowledge is potential power. This is also why people with some of the best degrees, some of the highest education end up working in low-level jobs. They have the knowledge, but they don’t take action. They don’t actually take action with the knowledge that they have.

What I want to put out to you today is where … in your Five to Thrive, where do you have the knowledge, but you’re not taking action. Where is that? What I want you to do is grab your journal. Grab your journal and, if you’re working out or doing something else, that’s okay. You can take notes on your iPhone, and if you … Hopefully, you have a voice recorder. You can also take notes there and write it out.

Where in your mind have you had the knowledge, knowledgeable skills or resources that you’re just not taking action on? Where in your body? Is there something you know? Do you know the best workout? Do you know somebody you can contact? Do you know what you should be doing and just not doing it?

What about your soul? Where are you not doing meditation, setting a quiet time, practicing your religion, whatever it may be for you? Where in relationships do you have knowledge? Do you have something that you know that you can give?

Some of that relationships could be sharing these daily growth hacks or something else that you’re enjoying, and then where in your business? Where in your business is there something you know? [inaudible 00:03:26] business owners, if you were your own consultant, if you went in and you were consulting for yourself, what is the first thing you would change?

That’s what I want you to take action on, and, of course, now that you have some insight, take action now because, remember, just knowing is potential power. Knowledge and action together is what gives you power, and that’s what allows you to live the Author of Your Own Story.

Now, what I want you to do, of course, is share this with three people. Build your tribe. Build your tribes so you guys can have conversations like this, conversations that matter, and also accountability, so, when they look at you and they say, “Hey. Hey, Doug, you got this knowledge. You got this new tip. How are you taking action on it?” Accountability partners really can help you out.

Now, if you don’t know anybody, go over to authorofyourownstory.com, click on the community button, and we’ll set you up with accountability partners and with people that are just like you, people that are actually striving to be better. That’s how you get to the next game. That’s how you elevate.

Now, what I also want you to do is go to the authorofyourownstorycom and sign up for our newsletter. That’s authorofyourownstory.com. I said that pretty quickly. I talk fast because I listen to audio fast and it’s just the way I am.

Go over to authorofyourownstory.com. Get on the newsletter. Why this is so important is because we are constantly releasing new material for free that we want you to have. Now, sometimes, these are courses that eventually are going to cost up to $1,000, but we’re releasing free to our email list ahead of time so you have the opportunity to experience it at no cost to you.

We’re also doing recordings with people and interviews with people that are actually living the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle. Why? We’re doing this to inspire you. We’re doing this so you can see other people from all walks of life and how they’ve broken the chains and broken the barriers and elevated and living their lives with limitless potential, and that’s what I want for you.

That’s it for me today. Of course, as always, go out and be the author of your own story.

If It’s Not True, It Shouldn’t Bother You

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5838143/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Just yesterday, I was relating to a friend a story that happened in one of my businesses. See, somebody talked about me and talked about what we were doing, and they had two parts to this story. The first part is they said, essentially, that Doug, me, was being inauthentic, that I was actually being cheesy and fake. The second part of the story is they actually said they read an article, and the process we were taking this particular client through was the wrong path, and they didn’t believe that they should go down this path.

Now, when I was relaying this story to somebody, who was another business owner, they immediately looked at me and said, “Wow, why aren’t you more upset? This person said you’re being inauthentic, Doug. Why aren’t you upset about that?” And I thought about it for a second, and I was like, “Gee, it doesn’t bother me.” Like, when someone says I’m inauthentic, it would just be like me saying, “Hey, you’re blue.” Now, look, if I say you’re blue, you just laugh at it, right? Because you know you’re not blue. It doesn’t even cross your mind. But this also happens in other areas of our life, right? This happens in other areas when someone says, “Hey, you’re too fat,” “Hey, you’re stupid.” Now, if we believe an inkling within ourselves that that is true, we get upset immediately, we attack, and that’s our defense mechanisms kicking in.

Now, if someone’s saying something about you — or about your product, your services, or what you’re doing — that you don’t believe, it’s just completely not true … Because in this particular story, I was being nothing but authentic. I was legitimately doing the best for that client and best in their interest, and I was really trying to help them out. And sometimes, I get excited. I love building businesses, I love helping people achieve their dreams, and so I get really passionate about it. So in this particular case, when they said I was being inauthentic, or being cheesy, or whatever terminology they were saying, it just rolled right off me, because I just … It was just like someone saying, “Hey, Doug, you’re blue.” Well, I’m not blue, and just didn’t think anything of it. “Ah, that’s funny. Let’s move on to the actual issue at hand.” The only part I got offended by the whole story was this person had a personal attack on my business partner, or at least his emotions, and I thought that wasn’t right. So in this instance, it just didn’t make sense.

But this also happens often. When I’m coaching a client, or I’m talking to an entrepreneur, oftentimes they get upset because a loved one, a parent, a friend, someone is saying, “You shouldn’t be an entrepreneur, you shouldn’t start a business, you don’t have the contacts, you don’t have the money, you don’t have the smarts, you don’t know enough.” Now, they get upset because, in the recesses of their mind, they fear this is true too. They fear that this is a problem, right? And I’ve also seen this in my fitness background, where people would actually get triggered, or get upset because people would talk about their weight. “You’re not strong enough, you’re not good enough athlete, you’re too fat, you’re too thin, you’re too slow,” whatever it is. People only get upset if they actually believe what is being said, and that’s what causes it.

I see this time and time again in relationships, right? So if I’m working with a client, they actually will tell me, “Well, my wife is doing this, and da da da, they always say that I’m not around, I’m not doing enough in this relationship, and I’m not present.” And when I listen to them, when I’m done, I’m saying, “Do you feel this way? Is there a part of you that actually resonates with this, and actually thinks that you’re not being present enough, that you’re not doing enough in the relationship?” And ultimately, the answer comes to “yes.” Yes, they do. They fear that they’re not being enough, and therefore, they’re not good enough, and they won’t be loved, and so that’s why they get upset.

The same token, if someone says, “Hey, you’re not being present,” and you know you are, you just kind of shrug it off and laugh, and go, “Gee, that’s interesting, why do you think that?” And it doesn’t become an issue because it doesn’t bother you. You realize that’s the other person’s projection of themselves upon you, and it doesn’t cause any upset. So what I want you to think about today, and the insight that I want you to take from this conversation, is that if someone’s saying something about you that upsets you, it really upsets you and gets you triggered, and gets you “[inaudible 00:04:05] I can’t believe they said that about me,” or what have you, and you get mad, ask yourself, is there some part of you that actually believes that? Is there some part of you that believes that, that what they are saying is true?

Now, if they say something and you don’t get upset, you know it’s not true, and you just realize that’s a projection the other person is putting onto you. It’s their own personal projection, right? They feel they’re being inauthentic, or they’re being cheesy in some way, of some station of their life, and they’re projecting that onto you. That’s my case. But maybe it’s something else, “You’re not smart enough,” and you’re like, “I’m plenty smart to start my own company,” or “to go off and be the author of my own story.” And then, if you know that, it doesn’t bother you. You know the person saying that is projecting their own insecurities of their own intelligence, their own insecurities that they’re not smart enough to do the things that they really want to do.

So what I want you to do today is grab your journal and write out those conversations. We have them on a regular basis. They come up, they come to me all the time with my coaching clients. I see it in people on almost a daily basis at this point in my life. But I also receive these attacks, right? And sometimes, I do think they’re real. When I find myself getting upset, I realize, “Wait a minute, Doug, is this something that actually bothers you? Is this something you believe in yourself?” And then what I do is I journal about it, I write it down.

Now, the process of journaling is just getting the thoughts out of your mind, and you have the kinesthetic or tactile experience of writing. And when you’re doing that, there’s some kind of brain-hand connection that comes out that allows you to look at yourself and be your own coach, to be the author of your own story. And when looking at this, you get to read it and ask yourself, “Is this true?” In fact, I recommend you do this with Byron Katie’s The Work, or the Judge-Your-Neighbor Worksheet, and if you need that, go ahead and message me, and I’ll be happy to get that to you, but Byron Katie’s got a lot of resources. This allows you to see the truth in a situation, what really is possible here.

But just remember, if you’re not getting upset, then it’s not true. If you’re getting upset, then there’s an inkling in yourself that believes that’s true for you. And so by writing this down and journaling this, this allows you to look and see what’s going on inside of you, look at your own fears, look at your own insecurities, and then make the choice of whether you want to work on those or not. And that’s up to you; you can do that or not do it. And again, realize that when people are name-calling you or saying things about you, if it doesn’t bother you, realize that’s their projection of themselves upon you, and that’s their issues, and those are things that they’re working through, and my suggestion to you, instead of getting mad at them, just love them more, and just realize, “Wow, that person’s got some serious issues. I hope they get the help that they need, and I hope they figure it out, and things work out for them.” And just move on, it’s just as easy as that.

The Answers Are Not In The Mirror

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5831109/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

All too often, I always hear from self-help gurus and business coaches and the like that the answers that you’re looking for are right in front of you. You just have to look in the mirror. They have the best of intentions, and what they’re really saying is that all the answers to the problems that you’re seeking, all the solutions you’re looking for are within you. All you have to do is look in the mirror and dig deep within your soul. The answers are right in front of you. Well, I don’t find this to be true at all. See, if the answers were right in front of you, you would have the solutions.

The problem is that the answers are within your blind spots. They’re within areas that you just can’t see yourself, and this is where a good friend an, accountability partner, a coach, a mentor or someone of the like can really help you out, and what they’re going to do is point out patterns. They’re going to point out those little nuances that you just can’t see yourself. You see, the answers aren’t right in front of you. They’re not you looking yourself in the mirror. Often time, the answers are hidden in one of your blind spots and possibly in the dark recesses of your subconscious, and these are things that we hide, these are habitual actions that we just don’t even realize that we’re doing. It’s like mental fidgeting, so to speak. You don’t even realize you’re fidgeting when you’re fidgeting most of the time, but it’s the same thing with hiding from yourself.

You see, we create these blind spots for a variety of reasons, but it’s usually to protect ourselves, to make sure that we don’t get hurt. This is an innate program that probably happened when we were children or at least adolescents that’s been carried on through this programming through adulthood, and we’ve been with it for so long that we just don’t realize it’s there. It’s like having extra weight on your body. You start to add on extra pounds, and you don’t realize it as you’re … till one day, you’re walking up the stairs and you’re like, “Gees, my legs hurt. I’m tired. I’m out of breath,” and then, all of a sudden, you lose the weight and then you go, “Gees, how did I ever survive with that extra 10, 20, 30 pounds?”

The same thing happens with these corners that we can’t see. You see, the answers are not in the mirror. They’re not in front of you. The answers that you’re looking for, the answers to the big problems, the solutions that will really move the needle for you are hidden within your blind spots. That’s why some of these daily growth hacks, when I ask you to do the work, I ask you to do it in a very specific way, and the reason is is sometimes you can actually uncover your own blind spots through journaling, through exercises. It just comes out in front of you. This is the power of writing.

I also recommend getting a friend, a coach, a mentor, whatever’s best for you, somebody that can look at your blind spots and give you honest feedback, honest feedback on what they think is going on for you. Of course, nobody knows completely what’s going on for you, and that’s where a great coach or mentor can really just pull it outside of you. They actually serve as the mirror, but they’re a mirror that can actually move, twist, and show you your blind spots, and that’s a skill that’s learned over time.

What I want you to do is grab your journal. Grab your journal and start writing. Write down those areas that you want to work on and write down those things that you see as your blind spots. Make sure you understand this is not an exercise to uncover blind spots, but what I want you to do is see what you think are your blind spots. Here’s a hint. Those aren’t your blind spots because you can see them, but that is a key indicator to the road that you need to travel on to actually uncover them. That is a key to actually opening up conversations with other people. Again, coaches and mentors should be pulling this without outside of you. You need to ask them to do this. You need to ask for permission to be coached, but also friends. Ask friends and see if they can give you information. It’s not quite as good in my experience because they don’t have the training to do so, but at the same time, whatever resources you have, utilize, and utilize your resourcefulness.

That’s all for me today. As always, go to authorofyourownstory.com. Make sure you’re on the newsletter so you’re getting tips like this and deeper dives. Just and Only

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5830975/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, I just got back from a run and I wanted to shoot this quick video because it’s a topic I had earlier with a client of mine I was working with. The two words that came up were just and only. In this conversation, he was telling me, “Doug, I’m just doing this,” or, “It’s only one time.” It’s only one time I’m doing it, or only one cookie or whatever it was. So in our conversation, it happened to be around the area of business. The words just and only kept coming up in this conversation. That’s when I stopped him. Let’s just say his name was Rick. I said, “Rick, it’s not just, and it’s not only. Take those words out of your vocabulary.” So what would you say if you took out the word ‘only’ in that sentence?

What he was talking about in his business is, it’s only one time that we skipped the sales process. This sales process was breaking down all the elements in his marketing and sales funnel. This was causing a lot of disarray in his business, but he kept on saying, “Oh, it’s only this one time. It’s only this one time that this key employee missed the sales meeting.” It’s not. What he really should be saying is, “This key employee missed the sales meeting.” That changes the whole paradigm. That changes the whole structure of the conversation. What Rick was also doing was in the area of his body. He was talking about, “I only cheated on my diet just this one time. I only cheated on my workout and skipped it, just Wednesday.” “Well, it wasn’t just Wednesday, Rick,” because what was happening is he was doing this from week to week. Every time he did this, these just and only, they kept on adding up. They kept on compounding. What he was doing was lowering his standards.

Oftentimes, when we just the words just or only, really what we’re doing is justifying our own lack of expectations, our lack of standards, and our lack of commitment to actually producing quality work and content in our lives. As we lower this bar, we’re continuing lowering this. What it does, is it really makes it easy for us to become complacent, lazy, and make excuses. So what I want you to do is think about your day. Think about those times when you use your vocabulary, how often are you using the words, ‘just’ or ‘only.’ So if it’s in your body, and a body is an easy one for me to keep coming back to, because it comes up so often. “I just skipped the workout on Wednesday,” or “I only overate last night.” These things come up all the time.

But the reality is if you just skip the workout this week, and maybe next week, you just give out two workouts, or maybe it’s just three. You only overate three times this week, that adds up over time, and it adds up to lack of commitment and which diminishes. It makes you feel like you’re a liar internally. Now this lowers your standards, as I said before, which causes a lot of problems here. It really blocks you from becoming the author of your own story. You’re setting up your own barriers in front of you, and blocking your recognition of these barriers being there. So what I mean is, what we’re doing, is we’re making excuses for ourselves, but we’re also lying to ourselves. Your subconscious mind picks up on these little lies.

If I say I’m going to run tomorrow, and then I wake up and say, “You know what, I’m just gonna sleep in this once,” or, “It’s only one time that I’m gonna skip,” really what I’m saying is I’m lying to myself. I lied because I made a commitment that I’m going to go running in the morning, and now I don’t do it. Then I’m making an excuse. That’s lowering my standards. What I want you to do is grab your journal out, grab it. Write down your Five to Thrive and look where, if anywhere, your constantly saying, ‘just’ or ‘only.’ Oftentimes this is in the body, relationships and business are the three areas I see this come up most with the people that I’m coaching one on one and in conversations with on a regular basis. Now, for you, it could be the spirit, it could be mind, or it could be none of them or all of them. The key is, to be honest with yourself. That’s how you actually progress and become the author of your own story.

It’s facing those realities. So what I want you to do is take out those words in your vocabulary. Take out ‘just’ and take out ‘only,’ because if you take those out, you get to the truth of the situation. I’d love to hear your feedback. Go over to authorofyourownstory.com, sign up for the newsletter, and shoot me an email. Let me know how these two words, ‘just’ and ‘only,’ are playing in your vocabulary right now. I’d love to hear your experience, once you take them out, what you recognize in your own language, and therefore, your own behavior. As always, I want you to share this with at least three people. The first three people that come to your mind right now that you want to have this level of conversation with. Look, you’re taking your time. I try to keep these short and simple, under five minutes, and you’re taking your time, your personal time to listen to these. I hope you’re doing the work.

Now, what I want you to do is take that next step and share this with at least three people, the first ones that come to mind, so you can have conversations that matter. That helps you build your tribe and become the author of your own story.
