So, in a previous episode, in fact the last one, we talked about “Who are you?” I gave you four exercises to do in your journal. During those exercises, I hope you discovered new things about yourself, and that you’re on the right path … The right path to becoming the author of your own story, and living that life of your dreams. You deserve it.

I was actually down in Colombia earlier this year. In Colombia, we were in the jungle with a shaman, we were drinking a drink called yage. During this whole ceremonial process, we were coming out of it and one of the other people that were there, he came up to me. His name happened to be Tony. Tony came up to me and said, “What do Dougs do?” I thought, “Okay, well what do you mean what do Dougs do?” Do you mean what do I do for a living? What do I like to do for fun? What do you mean what do Dougs do? He’s like, “No, no, no. That’s not what I’m talking about at all.”

Tony happened to be an older gentleman who’d been on spiritual journeys most of his adult life and was really wise. He said, “No, what I want to know is ‘What do Dougs do?’.” He said, “Here’s what Tonys do. What Tonys do is they like to write. They write down deep thoughts and interesting ideas so they could share it with the world, and that is really my passion. That’s Tony’s passion. When Tonys are confronted with conflict, Tonys get angry and they almost want to erupt. But through the action of writing allows him to calm down and get re-centered.”

I thought, “Wow, that’s really interesting.” So what Tony’s talking about is what is your natural essence? What is that natural North Star that you have? One, what is it? I’ll add onto that, because after thinking about that, is that the North Star that you want? Is that the guiding light that you actually want to be? Now of course, in the Amazon jungle, going through these ceremonies, and we were out of it for this time. We were out of it a lot, but we were out of the ceremonial process and off the yage, but still you have that euphoric feeling going on. During that gives you a lot of inner clarity and ways to look at yourself.

So it was a great experience for me, but what came out of that is what do Dougs do? What do Dougs do? Well, my whole life I’ve been a teacher. I’ve guided, I’ve been a soccer coach, I’ve been a personal trainer, I’ve been a business owner, I’ve lectured at universities, I’ve always been a teacher. The other thing of what do Dougs do, well, gosh, Doug at his essence is always helping people. I’m always going out of my way to help people. It’s just something that I always do. I’m always looking out after others. I’m always looking out at others, especially those that are less fortunate than me, that may not have what I have or the abilities that I was born with, the natural abilities. I’ve got two legs, two arms, just at the very basics. I happen to have brothers that beat me up, so I could be athletic. So, I’m very lucky and fortunate in these areas.

So what do Dougs do? So I wrote that down. It was really profound for myself. Now how I want you to do this, is ask yourself, “What do …”, insert your name, “do?” Write that down at the top of your journal and write that down. Try to boil it down to an essence, right? An essence of maybe one to sentences.

So what do Dougs do? Dougs love others and they do that by teaching them and showing them, and helping them to become the best person they could possibly be. That was my mission, right? Coming out of that, we decided to film 365 these … I committed to that, of these Daily Growth Hacks, where I’m talking to you and trying to offer you a little piece of insight that I hope helps you better your day, but also better those around you, better the world. That’s my ultimate goal.

So, what I want you to do is write in your journal and write down what you do. Like what do Dougs do? Write that down and make sure that aligns with your North Star. What I mean by North Star, make sure that aligns with the person that you want to become, or the person that you are becoming. If it doesn’t, then maybe you have some deep questions to ask yourself about changing that.

This is a great conversation topic, so I always recommend or ask you share this with at least three people. In this conversation, I’m going to ask you to share it with even more. Share it with people around you, and have that conversation. Maybe you can do what Tony did and just go up to somebody and say, “Hey, what do Carols do? Or what do Billys do or what do Darcys do? Or what do Maudes do?” Then have that weird conversation that I had with Tony like, “What are you talking about?”

But it really opened up the lines of communication, and Tony and I had a really deep exchange and became good friends based on that conversation. So I’m asking you to do the same thing. What I’m also suggesting is you can use this as your North Star. So when problems come up in business, or in relationships, or dilemmas, whether they be moral dilemmas in your life or just decisions that you just don’t know what to do, use this. What would Dougs do? Oh, well Dougs would go this way. Dougs would make this decision based on what their natural essence is. That makes it so much easier to follow your heart. Right? Get into your heart zone and follow what your path would be. It’s just an easy, easy exercise and it’s an easy North Star to carry around, so to speak, in your pocket that you always have, you can pull out.

That’s it for me today. Remember, go out and share this with more than three people today after you’ve done this exercise, because this is a great conversation starter and a great way to bring other people into your fold so you have a bigger tribe and you can go out and be the author of your own story.

Who are you?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5791096/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, who are you? I mean, if I were to ask you “who are you?”, you’d probably give me a standard response, what you do for a living, where you live, maybe a couple of your interests. But really at the core, who are you, and have you taken time to actually write that down?

So that’s one of the things I want you to do is grab your journal right now. Write down, “Who am I?” Write down what comes to your mind … What comes to your mind, and what comes through to your heart. Who are you as a person? What are your values? What are your interests? What are those things that move you and gravitate you to a higher level?

On the flip side, what I want you to do is write out, “Who am I not?” So what are those things that are indicators in life that you’re going down the wrong path? Things you want to stay away from? Do you want to make sure you’re not a selfish person? Do you want to make sure you’re not greedy? Do you want to make sure that … You’re making sure that you’re not doing drugs, or not eating unhealthily. Whatever it is, everybody’s going to be different.

What’s really important is to know who you are, not worry about what I am, but who you are. Also, what I want you to add on to that are, “Who are your role models?” Who are those people in your life that you look up to? Who are those people that you strive to, their values, their relationships, their body, their mind, their businesses? Those are the people that you really want to look up to and you’re striving to them because something you see within them.

On the flip side, who are those people that are your anti-role models? Who are those people that you see, whether they be in the public sector, celebrities, or people around you that you just don’t want to be like? They’re like anti-role models, you want to stay away from them. Now, if they’re in your life now, get rid of them immediately. They’re like a cancer. You want to get rid of those people. You can learn just as much from somebody who’s successful as you can from somebody who’s not successful, but at the same time you don’t want to hang out with those people that aren’t successful, because you are the sum of those five people or the people you spend the most time with, really.

So that’s what I want you to do today. It’s a really quick and easy thing to do, but at the same, just like most things in life, because it’s quick and easy to do, it’s easy not to do. So don’t let yourself be in that situation. This is also ideal for a high school student, someone in college, at that early stage of life, but also at any major stage of life, this is a great exercise to revisit.

So whether you’re turning 40 or 70, whether you’re going through a divorce or you’re just getting married, this is a great exercise to revisit, making sure that you’re on the right path. You’re with yourself every day so you miss those micro-changes, those micro-developments. That’s kind of when you look down, all of a sudden you say, “Hey, I’ve gained 40 pounds, what happened?” Or, “Man, I lost a language.” Or whatever it may be for you, or “my business is failing”, or “my relationship’s failing”.

All of a sudden … It doesn’t happen overnight, right? You know this. It happens over time in these micro-moments. So checking with who you are, and making sure you’re following that path and staying away from who you’re not is a key element to becoming the author of your own story.

So do these four exercises today, and of course, build your tribe, right? You are the sum of the people you spend the most time with, so the conversations you have matter. Share this with at least three people right now. That way you can grow your tribe and show them that you are becoming the author of your own story and you want that same thing for them.

That’s it for me today. Remember, go out and be the author of your own story.

Revisit: Grow Your Business

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5786956/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Jay Abraham has something he talks about, which is your three ways to grow a business. Now, this is something that I use in all of my businesses on a regular basis, but I especially use it for my strategic planning, and when I’m forming my 90-day goals.

So it’s very simple, and it’s going to require you to actually write some things down. So grab a blank piece of paper, and if you have your own business, you’re going to need to do some research with this, but first thing, that … What are the three ways? Well, the three ways are: To increase the number of customers. So, obviously, the number of customers or clients you have, increasing That base is one way. Number two is to increase the average transactional value. So, if somebody’s buying one widget, can you get them to buy another?

One way to think about this is when you’re going to a grocery store. How often are you waiting in that line to check out, and you grab a pack of gum, or a magazine, or something else that’s there, “Oh, yeah, that’s right, I do need batteries,” or whatever it may be, a drink, you’re grabbing it with that? Another way to think about it is, “Hey, would you like fries with that?” McDonald’s has done a great way, and so have the other fast food industries, as well as restaurants, in upgrading you. It’s an easy upgrade. Or, commonly, “Hey, would you like avocado?” “Well, of course, I want avocado.” “Well, that’s another $1.50.” Now, none of us know why it’s an extra $1.50, but either way, they’re increasing the transactional value of each customer or client.

So, that’s the second way. The third way is to increase the frequency of repurchasing, so increase the frequency that people are buying from you. Those are the three solid ways you can increase your business. So what do we do? Step one, write down in a box, so you’re going to have boxes across your paper; one box is, “How many customers do you have?” How many clients or customers do you have? Then the second box, what I want to know is, “What’s the average transactional value?” What’s the average amount the average customer spends at your establishment, your business? Whether it be through your website or your brick-and-mortar store, what’s the average sale? In the third box, what I want you to put in there is, “What is actually the number of repeat buys you get?”

Is it a subscription-based model, or do people … Maybe you’re selling mattresses and they only come in every couple years to buy something, I’m not sure. Whatever it is, how often do they actually buy something else? And then you’re going to have a total. So you’re going to have, you’ll take box one, multiply it by box two, then multiply it by box three, and that’s going to equal your total. That’s your total value, right? The value during the year. So then, what I want you to do is take box one. So remember, box one is the number of clients or customers you have. Multiply that by 10% and put that number under. Can you grow your business in a year by 10% in the number of people? Can you reach, if you have 100 clients, do you think you can get 10% more? I certainly hope so.

I mean, that’s really less than one extra client a month, that shouldn’t be too difficult for you. So write that number down. We’ll use 100 at the first example, your next box should be 110. Not tough. And now, we’re going to look at, again, what’s the average transactional value? Let’s go take that number and multiply that by 10%, right? So you’re going to multiply that by 10%. Now, again, maybe you sell mattresses, we’ll go back to that analogy, because I could see somebody saying, “Hey, Doug, I sell mattresses — people don’t come in, the transactional value’s a mattress.” BS. You can sell sheets, you could sell pillows, you could sell pillow cases, you can sell warranties … there are all kinds of things. Dentists …

My dentist sells upgrades all the time. “Hey, would you like a dental plan? Would you like a whitening program? Would you like to get on our program where we deliver toothpaste to your door every week?” There are all kinds of ways of increasing the transactional value of a client. If you can deliver value, you can increase that transactional value as well. Just come in with like-minded products. Something else you might want to think of is coming up with products and bundling. In other words, maybe you have a personal training studio, and you can go over to another … A chef. He does meal delivery, and you can work together and bundle that up. It’s not even your product, it’s the chef’s product, but you bundle it in, and you get a 20% discount from the chef, and you take that 20% to your clients.

Your clients get a great package, they get food delivered to their home, and you make a little bit of your effort. That increases the transactional value. The third way is the repeat of a buyer. How can you get them into a subscription model? How can you get them into something else? Maybe you’re that mattress guy and you’re like, “Okay, well people buy every two years.” Well, maybe you say, “Hey, look, if you come back and buy a new mattress in a year, I’m going to go ahead and give you X discount,” or whatever it may be. Or maybe you’re that dentist and you want people to come in more often. If there is a legitimate reason, now, there should be … Always go with integrity first. The legitimate reason you can increase that transactional efficiency, or the repeat buying, the better, right?

You want them to come back and buy from you more often. And maybe it’s by offering different services. So, again, personal trainer, you can offer massage, you can offer all kinds of different things. I know personal trainers that offer strictly stretching classes and recovery classes on the weekends. Their clients are coming in all week, and usually, they go, “Hey, the weekend’s here. No one wants to work out, I want them to rest,” so instead of them taking the weekend off, what they did is they developed programs for rest. I thought it was brilliant, it’s a genius program. They’re getting their clients, or delivering more value to their clients, their clients need to be resting, and they’re increasing the frequency as well as the transactional value.

So can you upgrade those all by 10%? So once you’ve taken those numbers and you’ve multiplied them together … So a 10% increase in customers or clients, 10% increase in transactional value, and a 10% increase in the repeat purchasing power, so the number of times they come back and buy from you … That is such a small percentage. If you can’t increase your business by 10% across those three areas, shut the doors. In all seriousness, it should be pretty easy to do, that should be a pretty easy growth strategy. Now, think about this: If you do increase all 10%, you’re really increasing your business by 33.1%. I’ll say that one more time, because it’s impressive: If you take your business and increase it 10% across those three areas, clients, transactional, average transactional value, and repeat purchases, you then, by the end of the year, you’ve [increased 00:06:11] … or end of the time, whatever it is — but a year in this example — you’ve increased your business by 33.1%.

That’s amazing. Very doable, very sustainable. Now, let’s say, instead of 10%, we’re a little bit more ambitious. We’re like, “Hey, Doug, I can do it. I’m a hustler, I got this. I have a great product, a great service. I’m going to increase it by 20% because that’s what I do.” Now, if you increased all three areas by 20%, you’re now looking at a 72.8% increase in your business. Now, you’ve heard me enough in these Daily Growth Hacks, you know I’m crazy, and I go more, “10%, no problem. 20%, I can do that. 33%, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m really going to go in, get my team motivated, we’re going to increase our business by 33%.”

And we’ve done this with our marketing agency, as well as with our old fitness business. Increasing it by 33%, that’s a 150% increase in your business over that time period — in this example of course of one year. Let me say that again: 150%. Now, most people you talk to are just struggling to increase 2, 3, 4% to stay ahead of inflation, and that’s ridiculous. That’s survival mode. And most likely, it’s a lack of information and resourcefulness. Take Jay Abraham’s, “Three Ways To Grow Your Business.” Take this chart, and grow. If you have questions, go over to the Author of Your Own Story community on Facebook and post on there, I’m happy to help you out.

Getting Your Needs Met

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5778563/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today’s question is actually a reader’s question and it comes up when we talk about the six human needs. What the reader is asking is, “Doug, I have my list of the needs that I’m currently in,” and remember, that’s certainty, uncertainty, love and connections, significance, growth, and contribution. They have their list and they did the exercise. First of all, kudos to you. I love it when people do the work. It pumps me up. They also want to know, “Hey, look, I have my other list, right? “The list of where I want to be.” For them, in particular, it was significance that was number one, but they wanted to be in a state of love and connection more. Awesome. How do I do it? That’s the question.

I’m going to give you a couple of tips. What I want you to write down are all the ways, so go back in your journal and if you haven’t done this yet, go back to the daily growth hack. It’s about four or five daily growth hacks ago. We talk about the six human needs. Look at your list, right? First, you should have your list of your six human needs as they are today or as they were when you listened to it the first time. If this is your first time listening to it, as they are today. Then your six human needs the way you want them to be, the order, the hierarchy, that you want to actually live your life as the author of your own story.

Then what I want you to do is write down all the ways you experience those, right? What are all the ways you experience certainty? For me, the big thing with certainty was I was always the guy that got the work done. If there was a job, no matter what it was, I’d stay up all night, I’d stay up, do a whole weekend. Didn’t matter to me, I’d get it done and I also was always the guy that could pull himself by his own bootstraps. I was the guy who could figure it out himself. I was the guy that can move a whole house or furniture by himself. The whole thing. Those are ways that I got significance in my life or that-a-boys for education. Whatever it may be. I would write those down.

Now, I would also write those down, all those areas. Love and connection for you. If that was yours and for the person that sent this question in, that is yours. For love and connection, we want to just write down all the ways you experience love and connection. For me, for example, if I try to shift love and connection higher up on my list. One of the ways was being outdoors. It was being in nature and that was a big one for me that allowed me to experience self-love and connection with spirit, so to speak, for me. Once you have those lists, you’ve done all six human needs and how you experience all six of those. Then what we want to do is reorder your list the way that you want to experience them. Again, for me, significance was high. I wanted that to actually be at the bottom and I wanted love and connection to be towards the top.

Then what I did, is I started doing those things or putting myself in situations where I would experience more love and connection. I started going out in nature more. I started making more time. I started putting my work down, turning the laptop off, or the cell phone off, and going out in nature. I started also scheduling business meetings on hikes. Now, this sounds really weird to a lot of people and to a lot of people I reached out to, at first they were kind of like, “Okay. Yeah, let’s just go for a hike.” They loved it. Not only did I get love and connection by being out in nature, but I was actually able to connect with business associates and business partners on a higher level. I actually really got to know them. I took both of us out of our elements, taking off the business clothes, taking off the fake facades, and getting out into nature. That served me so much better.

Contribution, the same thing. I was a rotary club member. I worked with a lot of philanthropic organizations. Also, donating items. When I say, “Donating,” I was donating my services, my time, and the products our companies put out to help nonprofits make money. I started putting myself in bigger positions to do that as well and that helped me with contribution. Same with growth. I started putting myself in these situations that allowed me to experience these feelings more often. Now, as I did that, as I put myself into those situations, I also tried to avoid or limit … I shouldn’t say, “Avoid,” but limit those situations where I had the human needs that I did not want to experience most, right? For me, I wasn’t really interested in certainty and that wasn’t that big of a deal for me, but there were certain areas, like relationships where it comes up and you get those triggers.

I try to reframe those. Significance, I reframed the way that I was feeling about those as well. If I got significance from getting all these certifications, I would change those and make those love and connection type activities where I actually really would get love and connection. How would I do that? Well, I might decide to sign up for a certification course because it would better my business and I might invite five or six friends or colleagues to do it with me and really focus on that connection time with them. This really allowed me to reorganize this hierarchy of needs and live into the author of my own story because it’s my combination and the way that I want to live my life. Then it becomes second nature, right? You’re starting to do this all the time. It’s a daily habit.

It’s just like listening to these Daily Growth Hacks and then doing the work on a daily basis, as well as, sharing them. Those are three things you just do every day. It becomes second nature. It becomes a habit. It becomes who you are. This is the … Not the first step, this is a major step to being the author of your own story. It’s like my brother once told me about business, “Business is not about hitting home runs, it’s about hitting singles, and singles consistently.” If you can hit singles consistently, you put all your guys around the base, a baseball analogy, and you get them all onto the base, and you win the game. The guy that’s swinging at the home for a home fences, which is most young entrepreneurs, you’re striking out left and right.

There’s nothing wrong with striking out, but the singles consistently, I’ve seen time and time again with the successful people that I have coached and work with on a one-on-one basis, as well as, successful people that I just know, and from my own personal experiences, are really the ways to get up to the next level in becoming the author of your own story and really growing, up-leveling as we say. I hope that answers your question. Get your two lists, right? If you haven’t done this before, your six human needs, go back and listen to that previous episode and I’ll have Billy put it right here for you. Thanks, Billy. Then … If you’re watching this, and then go ahead, and then also reorder those lists, and then how you experience them. What is everything that allows you to experience that, right? If it’s uncertainty, maybe it’s skydiving.

If it’s uncertainty, maybe it’s just going to a new restaurant. Everybody’s different. How are you experiencing those? Then put yourself in positions where you’re experiencing those top four, especially the top three on a regular basis, a daily basis. Go out of your way and make a point of it. That is how you become the author of your own story. Remember, another way, build your tribe. You need to be having conversations with people at a higher order. You need to grow with other people. These people will be your accountability partners. This will also give you more love and connection when you’re actually sharing this message with other people, and what this message means to you, right? Because it’s not about just what I’m saying. These are tips and tricks that I’ve gotten over the years and I’ve invested tons of money and tons of time, but I want you to be able to share this and then share what it means to you and that allows you to grow as well. That’s it for me today. Remember, go out today and be the author of your own story.

Revisit: The Power of Intention

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5504310/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Hi, it’s Doug Holt with Author of Your Own Story and in today’s episode, we’re going to revisit one of our most popular daily growth hacks, so grab your notebooks and remember, the key to success is doing the work. Let’s get started.

The Power of Intention is a book that was written by Dr. Wayne Dyer. This book was recommended to me back in 2005, 2006, by my then business coach, who I would meet with every morning. This man was in his 70s and had built several extremely successful businesses. In fact, if you’ve ever written a check, ever written a letter, or actually if you’ve ever used a piece of software that records notes, which I won’t name the name, you’ve used and touched one of his businesses.

He was very conservative, and when I asked him, “What is the book or resource that you would recommend to me the most?” Here I am, a young entrepreneur running two businesses at the time, really getting after it. He turned to me and said, “Doug, you know what I recommend is The Power of Intention by Dr. Wayne Dyer.” Now, this blew me away. It blew me away for multiple reasons, but the main reason I was really shocked to hear this was here I have this conservative business owner recommending a quote unquote new age-y type of book. When I asked him why, he said, “Doug, the power of intention guides everything.” He said, “The concept behind this book is putting an intention out to the universe, but it also gets your mind going. It sets where you want to go and what do you want to be. What is your intention?”

Well, fast forward to today. This is a question my wife and I ask each other almost every single morning. In fact, just this very morning, we were sitting on our couch having a cup of coffee, and she turned to me and said, “What’s your intention for the day?” Now what she meant is, “What do you want to get out of the day? What do you want to put out in the world and get out by the end of the day? How do you want to act? How do you want to feel? What is your intention?”

I asked her the same question. This serves multiple facets, right? First of all, it gets me thinking about my day and what do I want out of the day? What is my outcome? How many times do we go into the day rushed, where we’re controlled by our boss or our email or spouse or family members or friends? The whole world seems to be coming at us sometimes, over and over again, when by the time it gets five, six or seven o’clock and you get home, you just don’t even know what happened with the day.

Part of being the author of your own story is setting your intention. Not only setting your intention for what you want in the future. Not even setting your intention for what you want a year from now, but what do you want each and every day? What is your intention?

Now when I set my intention in the morning, I actually think about this as I go throughout the day. It occurs to me. Today, what I wanted was peaceful focus, and during the day, as things started coming to me, I said, “You know what? This isn’t where I want to go.” The idea of peaceful focus kept playing in my mind. I was able to really focus on those few items that really mattered to me, and also take time away for myself to have that peace and tranquility.

What also works is, by talking to my wife, I get to know what her intention is. I get to know what she’s living on a daily basis. All too often, relationships, we assume that that person that we fell in love with or a friend or a co-worker or a sibling is the same as when we first met them. Maybe some changes here and there, but just like you, they’re changing every single day. So by stopping and setting your own intention, and then turning and asking somebody else, “What is your intention for the day?” You’re bridging that gap in communication, and building that relationship and that bond so much stronger. So it really serves twofold.

So I ask you today, grab your journal. Write down mind, body, soul, relationships, and business. So you have a holistic perspective, and ask yourself, “What is your intention for this year?” And each day, “What is your intention for today in those categories?” What is your intention with your mind? With your body? What’s the intention with your relationships? What is your intention with your business and your soul? I think you’re going to see this pull you in a direction much quicker than you ever thought possible, and the direction that you want to go to, so you can truly be the author of your own story.

Your 5 Closest Friends

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5775164/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, I just got off the mountain, and that’s why I’m a little disheveled if you’re watching this, but if you’re listening to this, just imagine me looking perfect, and that’ll work great. I got off the phone call with a friend of mine. The friend of mine is a coach, and he coaches individuals at all kinds of levels, and what I mean by that is th coaches individuals just starting out on their journey to becoming the author of their own story, although he calls it something different, all the way up to people that are high-level executives.

When I was talking to him, he said, “Doug, one of the things that I really notice, and I notice this each time I go to speak at a school,” and he’s a speaker, “whether it be a high school, a college, or speaking at a corporate event, when I meet somebody, when I meet an individual and hear their story, I can tell right away who their five closest friends are. That’s right. So if they are in out of jail, I can know for a fact that their five closest friends are in and out of jail. They’re probably gang bangers. They’re probably drug dealers. They’re probably doing something that’s causing them to go through this cycle. At the same time,” he said, “if I meet somebody who is a fortune 200 CEO, I can tell you their five closest friends are most likely also CEOs or also equally successful in whatever field they are, and it goes across the board.”

We’ve talked about this in the Daily Growth Hacks previously. In fact, just recently, we had one called Community. If you haven’t had a chance to listen to that, go back. It’s only a couple episodes past, and then previously, we talked about birds of a feather block together. This conversation keeps coming up, and I see this pattern, as well. When I look around in my own life at my five closest friends, there are reasons that I’ve kept in touch with them, but I also have friends that I’ve been pulling in from all different demographics. As I grow and up-level both as a business person, but also as a high-level coach, I am also surrounding myself with people that are just a step ahead of me. This isn’t always strategically, but sometimes it is.

Sometimes, you just fall into meeting somebody and you have a conversation, and that conversation just clicks and you become friends or it could be a client of yours you’ve become a friend with or you can actually search them out. You have all these opportunities, but I know it for a fact that if you look at the five closest people to you, I can tell you exactly where you are today. That doesn’t mean I’m going to tell you where you’re going to be tomorrow, but that’s a good guess. I can pretty much predict your future based on those people you’re having the most conversations with.

If you are in some kind of a situation where you just don’t have a lot of friends or you’re just going, you realize that your peer group isn’t holding up to standards for you and you’re up-leveling and so you’re trying to stay away from them. Maybe your friends are just average. Maybe they’re just nine-to-fivers and happy hour at 5:00 to 7:00, and go to bed and do it again, and they just don’t care. Maybe you’re listening to this Daily Growth Hack because you want to be in front of somebody else that’s playing at a higher level. I totally get it. I listen to podcasts, audiobooks for the exact same reason. When I can’t reach out to somebody that’s in my peer group or somebody that’s playing at a high level, I utilize things like this, podcasts, audiobooks, as well as just reaching out to clients or somebody playing at a different level just so I can surround myself in that community.

Also, go to AuthorOfYourOwnStory.com and click the community button. It’s going to send you to our private Facebook, and that’s where you can have conversations with people who are on a similar journey as you. Yeah, it’s going to be different. They’re on a different path. They have different paths, pasts, as well as different trajectories for their future, but they’re having this conversation. If you’re listening to this right now, you are one of those people, and you need to surround yourself with as many as those kinds of people as possible.

Look, if you’re an accountant, chances are, you’re hanging out with other accountants or other people at that same financial level and educational level. If you’re working at Starbucks, chances are, you’re hanging out with other baristas. My guess is you’re hanging out with people in the same class. I don’t mean financial class or social class, but class in the sense that you’re having the same conversations. They’re on the same trajectory as you.

If you want to change your trajectory, if I can’t say that right now … If you want to change that trajectory, you need to actually up-level the people that you’re hanging out with, and that goes for me, too. Again, what you can do is if you don’t have people around you that you know, mentors that you can ask to have advice or to have conversations with, join communities like Author of Your Own Story, target people on LinkedIn. Shoot me an email. I’ll see if I can connect you and help you out in any way. I’m happy to do it. I’m on a mission to help one million people at least, over one million people I should say, better their lives in becoming the authors of their own story, so I’m happy to help as much as I possibly can.

Either way, what I want you to do is grab your journal, write up who are your five closest friends, who are they, and why. Do you have a history with them? Totally great, but who are the five people you have the most conversations with and what are they up to in life? What is their level? What playing field are they on? If they’re not on the same playing field where you want to get, share this with them, let them know, “Hey, I love you, but also I’m up-leveling and I want you to up-level, too,” and they’ll get this conversation. Bring them into these Daily Growth Hacks so you can up-level together, but also, if they’re not, they’re not interested in up-leveling, that’s fine, too.

Don’t discard them. I don’t recommend that at all. I love people of all walks. I have great friends that are just not going anywhere, frankly, and they don’t even listen to these Daily Growth Hacks, but I still love them. I love them for who they are, but what are the five people I’m having the most conversations with, and then, if I look around, in that playing field, when you’re writing this in your journal, isn’t where you want to be, who can you reach out to and start having conversations? Take them to coffee, take them to lunch. If they’re virtual, buy them a gift or ask for their time or pay for their time. These are things that you do. These are investments into your own legacy. These are investments to your own story. Join something like Author of Your Own Story University where people are investing financially and time-wise, investing in education. These are the people that you want to be around, and this is how you become the author of your own story.

That’s it for me today. I’m very passionate about this subject since I got the phone call, but I’d love to hear your results and what you think about this. Shoot me an email. Let me know, or go over to the AuthorofYourOwnStory.com community, and I’d love to hear your feedback. Have a great day and, remember, go out and be the author of your own story.

Revisit: Extra Time

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5771750/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, what do I mean by extra time. I know you’re thinking like “Doug, you know we all have 24 hours in a day. Nobody has extra time.” And that’s totally true, but let’s say you’re the average American.

Now, I know you’re watching this and you’re going off to www.authorofyourownstory.com and you’re participating in the community. You are anything but average. You’re extraordinary. You’re actually one of those people that are taking the bull by the horns, and living life on your terms. And I commend you for that, but let’s take a step back and just think, “What if you were average? You’re the average person, okay? And maybe we’re closer than we think. Well, did you know the average person spends four hours a day watching TV? Two more hours on social media. That’s six hours a day. Well, what could you do with six hours a day? I mean, if you just wrote that down, it would be astonishing. Did you know that if you just eliminated TV and social media, just in those six-hour average times, you can master a foreign language, be fluent in two months?

Think of all the things that you can do just by simply reducing that time. Let’s say you only watch two hours of TV and spend an hour on social media, then that frees up three hours a day of your time to pursue your goals, your passion. Start a new business, really connect with the people that you love, look at those people that in your life and spend time with them. Look at your goals: What do you want to learn? Is a foreign language? Do you want to learn to surf? snowboard? Do you want to travel more? Do you want to start a new business? What I’d love you to do is take out your journal or your notebook, and write down those things you do in a day. Now, everybody that I’ve coached says “Doug, I don’t watch TV. I’m not on social media that much.” Well, come to find out, they are a lot more than they think.

There are lots of good applications out there that can monitor your time on your computer. I use one to track my time to see what I’m on. What websites I’m spending too much time on. How much I’m on Facebook or YouTube or any other websites, reading journals or newspapers or etc online as well as on my mobile device: my cell phone. Really trying to see where I’m at and tracking my time. There’s also just journaling, writing down what you’re doing. You would be shocked to know how much time are you spending in the car, and while you’re in the car, are you listening to something that’s feeding your brain? Are you listening to bubblegum music? pop music or country or whatever it is that you enjoy? That’s fine, but do it with intent. Listen to music as you love it, but don’t listen to it just to drown out the other sounds. Try silence. Try our driving meditation so to speak. Or listen to something like the daily grow hacks that’s going to help you up level your life.

What I’m challenging you to do today is write down your times. Each day, write down all those things that you do. Write down how often you watch tv, watch the people around you. If you’re married with your spouse, don’t try to change this habit just yet. Just record it. Just be aware how often are you actually commuting, how often are you actually spending on social media.

I highly recommend downloading and installing one of these time-tracking applications that you can actually look at at the end of the day and see how much time you’re spending on websites such as Facebook, YouTube, or any of the news media outlets. Look at your time at the end of the week. See where that’s benefiting you and see where you want to move or pivot. Now, I know for me, I found that I was actually watching a lot more TV and I found myself on YouTube quite often.

Now, I watch you Youtube too because I watch shows like this too. I watch things that are going to inspire me or going to uplift my life, but I found that I was watching them a lot more than I thought. I was spending a lot more time on these websites and by consciously making a decision to cut that down, I’ve actually been taking that time and started practicing my Spanish. Now, over next course of a year, I could be fluent in Spanish if I continue on this path. If I multiply the hours they say that it takes to master of foreign language, I’m on track. And by this time next year, when you and I are having a conversation, I’ll be able to speak to you in Spanish, and it’ll be awesome.

So, the whole idea of extra time is being conscious of your time. So write your times down to really track it. I really highly recommend these time tracking devices are available for laptops as well as phones, but also manually tracking things that you’re doing. And I’m not saying TV is bad or social media’s bad. Nothing’s bad. It’s just is that where you want to put your intention? If you were to look at yourself a year from now and look back on how you got to where you want to be, was it the TV time that is really rewarding you? You know when you sit down binge-watching five shows of the Walking Dead, the next day, do you feel better about yourself? Or is that time better spent doing something else? Maybe watching one episode or two or maybe spending another time doing it? Really, what I’m asking to do is just be conscious of your time.

I’d love to hear your results, love for you to share them in the Facebook group. Also, remember to get these show notes and all the other show notes, as well as tips tricks and other ways to uplevel your life, go to:  www.authorofyourownstory.com today.  That’s it for me today. So once again, I had an author of Your Own Story, daily growth hack listener, reach out to me and say, “Doug, loving the daily growth hacks, I just wish I could have these conversations more and more. How can I do that?” And to that person I say, “Well first of all, if you listen to these daily growth hacks, we’ve covered this subject before.” And if you want to hold on to your limiting beliefs of not having community, then that’s what you’re going to get. You’re going to get these limiting beliefs and they’re going to stick with you.

Because it’s just not true. In this modern day era, it’s so easy to reach out and connect with like-minded people. More than it ever has been before. So I’ll go over some tips on how you can do this. The first thing is you’ve got to get rid of your limiting beliefs. You’ve got to get rid of the limiting belief that you can’t actually have a community, that you can’t have conversations that matter.

Even within your own current community, you’ve got to get rid of that. If you want to hold on to that limiting belief and hold on to it tightly, that’s what you’re going to end up with. So, how can you go about it? Well first, you can find already existing communities. You an go over to groups like The Author of Your Own Story group, right. It’s right there on social media, it’s on Facebook. You can go on, you can request to join. It is a closed group.

We have it as a close group just because we don’t want people just spamming. You go into these groups, and I’ve been into them before, there’s always a few people that are just spamming and spamming and spamming. We didn’t want that, so it’s a closed group. So it’s private in the sense that it’s inside that community. If you request to join, we’ll go ahead and approve your request.

\But you don’t just have to do The Author of Your Own Story community, there’s many out there. There are communities that are just for men. There are communities out there that are just for women. Communities for moms, for dads, for entrepreneurs, and for business people. Now you have free communities, and you have paid communities. And I can tell you a little bit about my experience and what the difference could be.

Now, I ran paid and free communities in the past, and usually the paid communities, people show up. And they show up a little bigger. They show up in a way that they’ve actually given value. They’ve said hey look, this is worth my money and my time and they show up each and every time, not only asking questions but contributing. And that’s the key to communities right. The key to having your own tribe or to growing people around you who are going to uplift you, is actually giving value, it’s giving back to those people. It’s giving back to what they’re doing.

Answering their questions and thinking about it. I’ve mastered my groups that I’ve both been in and I’ve fun, I always get the most from somebody else’s problem, right? Somebody else’s situation that they’re going through, and then helping that person get through their situation, I get more. I get more than even when I’m asking for help on something else that I’m going through.

So that’s one way you can get community. Linkedin is a great way of forming communities as well, and I have a couple of communities in there. Linked in is great for business, B to B. Again I find Linkedin to be a little bit more sales-y. So, Facebook seems to be a little bit more social. There’s also private offline. I’ve run private and I have learned that dougholtonline.com, mastermind groups are offline, but off social media we have our own private groups. That’s for our inner circle, it’s for elite members. Those are paid, but there are other ones that are out there as well.

What else can you do? Meetup.com is a great resource, in fact, I talked to another entrepreneur just two days ago over coffee, and he was looking for jobs, or opportunities I should say. And meetup.com is one of the top things that I would’ve recommended for him. And the reason being is he was looking for a very specific subset of interest levels, and they already are groups that are pre-existing.

That means, there’s already a group he can plug into and have conversations at the level that he’s looking to have them at. Now they might not be the right fit, but if you don’t go out there and try, you can’t do this. There are also all kinds of other things. Reddit is a great way of looking out there. Reddit is a great community, depending on where you’re at. So you have those.

Now another thing you can do, and I highly recommend this, and this is something I think that most people leave out. Another thing you can do is actually asking questions to your current community. So, friends and family and co-workers you’re currently with. Now you may think that they’re playing a level below you, or maybe at the same level, and they don’t want to rise up. That might not be true, you might be very surprised. In fact, I found this to be true in my own life. Now, how did I do it?

Now, how did I do it? Well, one was is I really focused on listening, and that’s a big part of communication is just listening. But I would also bring questions, thought-provoking questions to the table. And these thought-provoking questions often were me sharing things that I was learning. Or sharing conversations of topics, or things that they were interested in. So if they were interested in acro yoga, I wanted to know more about acro yoga, and I would ask questions, and I was really curious.

And within those questions, other topics would come up, and I would learn intricacies about them that I never knew, which would help me grow. And since then, with that particular person that I’m thinking of, we’d become great friends. So this is just one way you can do it. Now you can share these daily growth hacks. Share them, and use me as your excuse. You know this crazy guy I watch or listen to depending on how you digest this, he recommends and asked me to share this with three people, and I chose you.

You can do it, you can put it all on my shoulders. And I’m fine with that, if that helps you break the ice, do it. Share this particular podcast, or pick another one that you like. That’s a great way of just stirring up conversations and conversations that matter. And you may find out that the existing people that you around actually have dreams and aspirations like yours, and maybe they just haven’t shared them with you, or maybe they’re waiting to take that first step, and you’re the catalyst, and to me that’s amazing, if you can be that catalyst.

So, in response to that comment and that question that I got, there is tons of community. In this day and age, you can reach out to so many people. I get friend requests on Facebook and Linkedin on a daily basis, and often times, those turn into conversations. And when someone’s trying to add value, of course, I want to add value back, it’s a lot of reciprocation. And so we start conversations, and sometimes those conversations turn into friendships and long-lasting friendships. I can think of one particular which is with somebody in the UK and I won’t mention his name, but we’ve become good friends, and we talk twice a week now.

And that was something, a conversation I think started several years ago, and it just built up. So, that’s what I’m talking about, having those conversations that matter and social media, or the internet, using that to leverage and find your community. Just don’t hold on to your limiting beliefs. Saying you don’t have access to a community, you don’t have access to quality men or quality women, or people doing this and that, is just BS, and if you hold onto those limiting beliefs, that’s all you’re going to get stuck with. You get what you hold onto.

On top of that, you know, my wife and I just moved to a new community, we have a new baby, so we have every excuse in the world not to be social, and we are going out right after I hit the record button and end this particular segment, we’re going out and meeting four other couples to have a beer, for me, for my wife to just be outside and just relax and enjoy the day.

And that’s what I want you to do. So, go out, make your list, go out and start associating with other people. If you need help, shoot me a message, and I’ll be happy to point you in the right direction of where you go. In fact, I prefer if you just shoot me an email, my email’s very simple. It’s my first name at the authorofyourownstory.com. And I’ll be happy to point you in the direction that I think you can find people of like interests or people that are playing at the high level that you are striving for.

And of course, my last request to you, is make sure you go out and be the author of your personal, your own story. Have a great day.

Built To Sell

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5767440/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

This is a topic around business, and a topic I’ve had several times in the last week when I’m talking to business owners about their business model and how they actually want to get out of their business so they can become the authors of their own story. Oftentimes what happens is a business owner’s building the business as a solopreneur and they surround themselves by key people, yet they haven’t been able to take themselves out of the business. In fact, even a worst case scenario, they branded their business around their skill sets and about their name. Now their business is synonymous with them.

This has happened to Tony Robbins, for example, in the personal development field, but this has also happened to one of my clients who was also a coach, as well as another one of my clients who owns a furniture store. What they’ve done is they’ve narrowed themselves in. They didn’t build their business for success or an exit strategy. This is something I recommend all business owners consider. Build your business so you can sell it. Maybe you don’t want to sell it, and that’s fine, but by building your business so you could sell it, so you’re building it as if you’re going to sell it, this gives you a whole variety of opportunities.

One of those key opportunities is pulling yourself out of the business so you stop being the bottleneck of that business and you can go out and you can travel. You can be the author of your own story. Heck, you can start another business if you’d like to if you’re crazy like me, but each person, this gives you more leverage. Each person makes their own decision, but if you’re in the business and you are the roadblock to that business, you can never sell it.

For example, if you’re going to buy Doug Holt Online, you’re going to buy Doug Holt Online, what are you really buying? Yeah, I have revenue, but it’s all based on my brand. That’s not a business that’s built to sell. Whereas if you were to buy something like Kmart or Target, these are businesses that are built on solid principles and not one person in mind. You could own a yoga studio, you could own a furniture studio, you could be a consultant, and you could be in the field of finance. Building your brand around the actual brand concepts and around … Instead of services, building them to products allows you to pull yourself out and actually have an exit strategy. While this may not be, again, your strategy for right now, this allows you so much more leverage over time.

I see this so often where I get the call from the business owner who’s fed up and they want to invest in coaching. They want to invest in coaching because they’re so fed up with their lifestyle. They want out of their business and they want to sell it. Of course, as a business owner, you want to sell it for 5X revenue or more because you know how much value’s in there, but me as an investor, I’m looking at your net income. I’m looking at what I can get out of that business. Chances are, they’re not going to meet at the same place unless you built your business to sell. If you’re selling services, turn them into products.

There’s a great book called “Built to Sell”, and I highly recommend it if you’re in this situation. Of course, you want to also systematize your business. Then you have books like “The Checklist Manifesto”, “The E Myth”, “Traction”. These are business books that can help you along your way, but either way you’re looking at this, what I want you to do as a business owner is grab your journal, or your laptop because this is going to be a process, and look at your business as if you’re an outside investor. You don’t know what you don’t know about the business. Can you pull yourself out? Can you extract yourself from that business and replace yourself with one or two key employees or key staff members? If you’re going to replace yourself, what’s that going to cost? That’s going to have an effect to the net of your business, the net revenue being brought in. If you’re building it to sell it, if you’re building it properly, you’re able to pull yourself out of that business at any time when you need to. That is the key to being the author of your own story.

This is a very simplified version of a very complex subject, but I want to introduce it to you because it comes up so often in conversations with me when I’m talking to business owners. I want this to be something that you’re ahead of. If you don’t have a business yet, but you’re thinking about starting one, this is a great place to start because you start with your exit strategy first, and as you design and build your business structure, you’re able to come at it from a different angle. You’re able to come at it with the idea that you’re able to go in, build the business, but be able to pull yourself out. This also helps your staff because they’re not always coming to you being the control freak, the roadblock, or whatever it is in the pipeline to actual growth and expansion.

That’s it from me today. I’d love to hear from you and continue the conversation on our Author of Your Own Story private forum, but of course, remember, build your tribe. I can’t emphasize this enough. Do the work and build your tribe. Share this with at least three people right now that you think would benefit from this and just have the conversation. Have a conversation with them and open up. That’s it from me today. Go out and be the author of your own story.

How to Learn Fast

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5763289/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

So this is a tip I got from Jim Quick. Now, Jim Quick is thought of as the memory guy. So, you can find him over at his website, but he also has a fantastic podcast I recommend checking out. So Jim uses the acronym FAST, how to learn anything and how to learn it faster, right?

So FAST, what does F stand for? F stands for forgetting what you already know, and really focusing on the task at hand. So forgetting your limitations, forgetting the subject matter at hand. So if you’re studying business, or you’re studying a language, forgetting those rules you already know and going in with a child-like mind, and really going in with an open mind. Because really, you can’t fill a cup that’s already full, so you have to empty your cup to be able to refill it with new information.

A, what’s the A stand? The A stands for being active. Now, you have to be an active participant in your learning, and one good way of doing it is joining a community, right? Joining a community of other people that area learning the same subject. This could be just like the Author of Your Own Story community, or if you wanna take it up to another level, the Author of Your Own Story University, where you have a community of people playing at just a higher level. So the A is being active, being active in your learning and actually participating. There is some work involved in learning, and it’s not as hard as you probably think, but you do have to be active in this.

The S, what does the S stand for? The S stands for your state. What emotional state are you in? Now, of course, we can always control our state, and a thing that’s really important to remember is, you know, information combined with emotion helps you retain long-term learning. And that’s one of the reasons I try to bring energy every time I do these Daily Growth Hacks, and it really uplevels my energy, but hopefully, it actually adds something to what you’re learning. And that’s also why you can probably remember some of the best times and worst times in your life because they have heavy emotions attached to them.

And the same goes with learning. So really bring your state up, really lift your energy, really bring your all to your learning activity, it’s really up to you. You and I can control our own state, and, you know, even if you’re tired, or you’re low, or you’re run down, you always have more energy to go through. The analogy I constantly use is, you know if you’re tired and I told you, “You just won the lottery,” all of a sudden you would erupt with joy, you’d be jumping around, you’re being really excited. So you have that energy inside of you now. So S is for your state.

And T is for teach, right? So teach it. So when you teach something you’re not only learning it once, but you’re learning it twice. And that happens with me when I do these Daily Growth Hacks, you know, I’m actually reteaching this in my own terms and my own language. And yeah, is it perfect? Probably not, but it helps me, right? So it helps me to relearn the material.

And when I’m coaching a client, whether it’d be an executive, or just a student, somebody that’s just trying to learn, when I’m teaching them the subject material it really ingrains that material in my own mind, because I’m using my own analogies, I’m using my own sentence structure, and I’m using my own emotion to convey that thought process over. So remember, if you wanna learn anything, you use the acronym FAST. F is for forget, A is active, S is state, and T is teach.

That’s it for me today, I hope this helps you out. And whatever subject you’re learning, or trying to grow in in your Five to Thrive, try to apply this FAST acronym to that subject matter. I would really love to hear about it. And remember, teach, get into a community, be active, share this with at least three people, right here, right now, so you can grow your tribe, and so they can learn faster and you can grow faster. That’s it for me today, go out and be the author of your own story.
