We all have 24 hours in a day, I don’t care who you are, you have 24 hours in the day. What are you gonna do with it? Have you ever thought of this? Have you ever woke up in the morning and said, “How can I seize and conquer this day?” Maybe you’re like me? Maybe you actually follow these daily growth hacks and realize that people like myself write down our day the night before. We plan it out. How am I gonna seize these 24 hours? This precious time that I have here on earth? This precious time that I have to spend with my family? This precious time I have to build my businesses? This precious time I have to reach out and help clients and break their chains for them? Help them out with that?

Man, I get passionate about this, right? Because I know I have 24 hours. I have 24 hours right here, today, in this moment, as do you, listening to this. What are you gonna do? How are you gonna seize the day? Are you gonna sit on the couch, watch TV, sit in the stands and watch other people live their dreams? Live their lives? Or are you gonna step up and actually do something with your life?

I’m not saying this to talk down to you, I’m saying this to hopefully motivate you, I say motivate you only in the sense that I want you to have everything that you want. Not my story, but your story. I want you to seize the day.

One thing you can do is grabbing your journal every single night and writing our your five to thrive and planning what you’re gonna do that next day to seize the day. For me, I run six businesses, and people often say, “How do you do that, it’s inconceivable.” Well, you know what? I only work a few hours every single day, but it’s hyper focused, and I work hard, right? I work really hard, but I’m actually enjoying what I’m doing and I’m focusing on spending time with my family.

I really dive deep into my family because I plan it out. I seize the day. I don’t spend all my day sitting on the couch watching TV. You know, I love movies, and my wife and I watch a lot of movies, we enjoy it, but it’s something we consciously do, not unconsciously. I want you to seize this day.

Look, you have 24 hours, right here, right now, after you listen to this daily growth hack, and I want you to have it all. If you’re watching this on YouTube or Facebook or Instagram, what I want you to do is comment below and let me know what you’re gonna do today to seize the day.

If you’re listening to this on Spotify, iTunes, SoundCloud or anywhere else on the internet, I want you to go ahead and reach out to me and let me know how you’re seizing the day.

If you’re like a lot of people, and I used to be in this way, is I didn’t know what to do. I kind of felt, “Ah, what do I do, how do I seize the day, I know what I want, but I’m not sure what to do.” Reach out to me, I’m here to help you.

We’re almost at 300 daily growth hacks, and when I started this journey, I committed to a client of mine to film 365 daily growth hacks, and we’re almost there. I wanna help you, I’m committed and I want you to have it all. I want you to have everything you deserve and everything you desire.

Calls to action, make sure you go over to the Author of Your Own Story group, where you can actually have conversations that matter, conversations with people who are out, seizing the day. I also want you to go over and make sure you get on the newsletter, so you have updates each and every time we release new content. We’re releasing new content every single day, in order to help you on your journey, in order to help you seize the day.

You wanna have these daily growth hacks in your head every single day, multiple times, because just like a song, these reminders are gonna help you on your path to becoming an author of your own story.

I will see you tomorrow, reach out, I look forward to it. Remember, carpe diem, seize your day. Take care.

The Enemy Of Happiness

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6282045/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I remember back when I first wanted my adventure van. I wanted this custom sports mobile type product where I could load myself in it, put my belongings and just head off into the world. And nothing would stop me right. I had this vision where I’d have solar power and I’d be able to work and I’d be able to do things like these daily growth hacks, anywhere in the world and I would be carefree. I could run my businesses remotely. That’s when I would be happy. That’s when I would be able to relax and stop stressing about work and about friendships and relationships. If I just could get this sports mobile, this sports van, this custom made the thing that I wanted so badly, I would then be happy.

Haven’t we all done that right? And then what happened was, I would work really hard to get there, and then I got the van and built out and had tons of problems as that was happening. And then I took off on a trip, and then I was happy. But the truth is, I was happy or could have been happy the whole time. Isn’t the pursuit the happiness, isn’t that pursuit actually what stifles happiness? Absolutely. How many times have we said in our lives, “I’ll be happy when I have that relationship. I’ll be happy when my husband or wife does X, Y, Z. I’ll be happy when my business makes $8 million or $80 million, whatever it is. Or I’ll be happy when I get a bonus. Or I’ll be happy when I get the new job. Or I’ll be happy, happy, happy, right.” We have these kinds of dialogues in our head. And the truth is, whenever you say, I will be happy, you’re saying it’s conditional. They call it conditional happiness in phycology. And what you’re saying is, “My happiness is based on this particular condition.”

And it doesn’t work right. You’re actually stifling happiness inside of you. You can achieve happiness if you’re waiting for something else. And I’ve experienced this so many times in my life. But what if, what if I would have acted as if I had that sports mobile at the time and lived into that happiness? What if I’d just been like, wow, what would it feel like to step in and to drive, to head up to the mountains, to the beach, camp out, whatever I wanted to do in my own little cocoon right. That excites me and I could have been happy in that moment and enjoyed the journey, enjoyed the process and going through that. Instead of worrying about I got to get my businesses ready, oh what is this van going to do? And I’m custom making it and I got to do all these things. And the vendors I was working with, turned out not to be really good guys and they turned out not to be very smart and they lied to me quite a bit.

So with that being said, I was just stressed. But during that whole journey, it was over a couple of years, I could have actually been happy. I used conditional happiness as an excuse, as a reason to feel overwhelmed. A reason to bring fear upon me. So I’m going to ask you today right, where is conditional happiness in your five to thrive, stifling you from actually feeling and getting everything you deserve and want out of life? Is it a relationship? Is it the idea that when you get the new job or when you get the new employee or when you hit a certain benchmark, a KPI, a key performance indicator in your business or in your life, then you’ll be happy. We all have these conversations right. So the key and trick with us all, is identifying and writing them down. Our subconscious is going to play tricks on us and hide it from us. But if we write these things down, we’re able to actually push through and find true happiness within that moment, within that present time, the here and the now.

So I invite you to do. Don’t be somebody who just listens to these daily grow packs. We have tens of thousands of people that are downloading this each and every day, and I want to make sure you’re one of the ones that are doing the work. Make sure you go over to Facebook and join the Author of Your Own Story private Facebook group, where we’re doing Facebook live, we’re continuing the conversation above and beyond this. In fact, I had a member send me a text message that said, “Doug, in the four days of being in the Facebook group and doing the work, I am further along than I’d been in two years of trying this on my own.”

I want that for you. It’s a free group, it’s a free resource. Utilize your resources, utilize your resourcefulness. And of course, if you’re looking for a mentor or coach, reach out to me. If I can’t help you, I will make sure I will find somebody who can. You deserve all of life’s fruits, especially on this journey, and I want that for you. Have an amazing day. I will see you tomorrow. Remember, go out and inspire somebody, simply by living into your own story.

Uncomfortable Vs. Exhaustion

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6278734/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

If you’re like me you’ve been watching the Winter Olympics, an amazing event where people from all over the world come to compete in the sport that they actually love.

Now, how come there are only a few people that make it to the Olympics? Well, that’s the difference between exhaustion and just being uncomfortable, right? How many times do I look back at my life that I’ve given up because I was uncomfortable? I pushed it to where I thought my limits were and then I just pulled back. Now I’ve done this in the areas of business, I’ve certainly done it in relationships, and I’ve done it in the areas of my fitness. As an ex-competitive athlete, I certainly have done it in a sport.

The difference between those that make it, successful people. Whether it be the Olympics, whether it be someone who is successful in a relationship, in their marriage, whether it be someone who is successful in business, is they’re able to understand that being uncomfortable is a mental state, not a physical state, right? When you’re uncomfortable you’re giving up, your body is giving up … Or excuse me, your mind is actually the one giving up, not your body, in the sense of working out, but this also happens in business, right?

How often as business owners or someone who has a business idea … I mean, come on, be honest with me, are you that person that tells your friends about these great business ideas that you have that just never seem to happen? We’ve all been there, right? We all know a couple people that talk about business ideas all the time but never execute. Why don’t they execute? They don’t execute because they’re uncomfortable, right?

As soon as they hit that threshold of being uncomfortable they sit down, they shrink themselves, they lower themselves because it doesn’t feel good to be uncomfortable. It’s not the right time, I don’t have the money, I don’t have the resources. We’ve heard all the victim excuses before, right? I’ve had them myself so I can relate to them, but the difference  between someone who is successful in business, for example in this analogy, is that they get to that place where they’re uncomfortable, they smile because they know the next thing, that little one percent difference makes the difference between success and someone who just talks about it. Then they push themselves to exhaustion.

That’s how stars do it. That’s how athletes do it, right? Same thing in the gym, right? If you’re going to Crossfit, if you’re going to Orange Theory, you’re working out on your own, maybe you’re doing pilates or yoga, right? If you push yourself just that little bit more, that’s where you see success, that’s where you see results, right? It’s that idea that maybe you don’t cheat on that one meal that you were thinking about doing. You know, maybe your family brings pizza in and you’re on a diet and you decide you know what? I’m uncomfortable but I’m going to push myself one more step and just pass on the pizza and have a lean protein salad or something.

Or again, in relationships, how often do relationships bring out that uncomfortableness within us, right? They trigger all our insecurities and so when you stand in that and kind of go wow, this is amazing, I’m uncomfortable here, which means the next thing is going to be growth. When you stand in that storm of being uncomfortable and push it a little bit further, that’s where the fruit is. That is where the ripeness is in any relationship because you’re able to navigate those waters, show that you’re committed to standing strong, and it allows you to develop yourself as a greater person within that relationship. Not only your partner grows by seeing how much you love them or seeing how much you’re able to stand in your power, but you do too.

You see, when watching the Olympics, it’s easy to sit on the couch and imagine how these are natural athletes. That’s just not true. A lot of them are very gifted, right? Yeah, they are natural athletes to some degree, but there are probably people who are a lot better athletically naturally than them, have better genetics, but these particular athletes have proven time and time again to embrace the idea of being uncomfortable and pushing through exhaustion and that’s why they’re champions.

What I want you to do today is grab your journal, grab your Five to Thrive, write them out and where are you just stopping at being uncomfortable? I know I’ve done this so many times in the area of trying to learn a foreign language, where it’s ah, it’s just uncomfortable because it’s taking time, right? I’ve done that. Where have you done it? Where about your body? I’ve learned over the years to embrace uncomfortable in exercise. I love it because I know on the other side of it I’m going to get stronger, I’m going to get bigger, I’m going to get leaner. I’m going to get all those benefits that I want.

I know in business it’s the same thing. When I’m uncomfortable, I love pushing through because I smile because I know that my competition is not willing to. They’re not willing to get uncomfortable, they’re not willing to push that next level, and that’s one of the reasons I’ve been so successful. Same thing with relationships. You know, I started a journey in relationships where I’ve really practiced being uncomfortable and it’s allowed me to flip the script so to speak on the way that I used to be. This is all areas, not just my romantic relationship with my wife but all relationships I have.

Then soul, right? Where are you doing this in the soul? Where are you stopping? Is meditation just uncomfortable for you? You know, I did a ten-day silent meditation. I can tell you that was uncomfortable but I did it because I was so uncomfortable doing meditation. I knew I needed to push it to that next level and this is exactly why I continue to hire coaches and mentors to take me to that next level and I invite you to do the same.

Grab that journal, write out where you’re feeling uncomfortable and your Five to Thrive. Then I want you to ask yourself are you willing to push it to that next level? Are you willing to take the next steps and be someone who’s not just talking about it but somebody who’s doing the work? Be one of those one percenters that achieve success and inspires the people around you by being the author of your own story.

That’s it for me today. I will see you tomorrow. Have a fantastic day. Go out and just do the work and inspire somebody because you will. People seeing you glowing and going after your dreams, you’re going to inspire people that you’ve never even met, never even knew, and that’s where the magic happens. Push through, make sure you get to that exhaustion, push through the uncomfortableness and you will see the fruits of the end of your labor. Have a great day.

Where There’s Overwhelm, There’s Actually Fear

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6270008/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I am Doug Holt with Author of Your Own Story, and this is your daily growth hack where each day we bring you a tip, trick or technique to help you up-level what we call the five to thrive. That is your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships and of course, your business.

Just yesterday I was talking to another business owner. And they were telling me how overwhelmed they were. And they were looking for techniques or some kind of trick that I might have to help them get over overwhelmed.

In fact, they were so overwhelmed, they were telling me they were gonna sell their business. They were just gonna give up, throw it all away. And they’ve been working at this for over two years. Blood, sweat, tears, the whole nine.

And what I told them is what I’m gonna tell you. Is, when you’re overwhelmed, really what’s showing up for you is fear. Now that can be fear of failure, that could be fear that you’re out of control, which it was for this person.

It could be fear of a lot of things. Are people gonna leave you, is your product not good enough. Now, you don’t have to be a business owner to experience overwhelm, right? We all experience it. But what’s really happening is you’re really scared about something. And that’s why you’re overwhelmed.

You’re scared you might not be doing it right. You’re scared you might have too much on your plate. You’re scared that people are gonna think something bad about you, right? All these things contribute to that feeling of being overwhelmed.

So what I want you to do right now is grab your journal. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, or if you felt overwhelmed recently. And then ask yourself this question, right? What am I afraid of? Now if you’re in a state of overwhelm right now, you’re listening to this, you’re just like Doug, I’m overwhelmed right now. You don’t even know.

What I want you to do is take 10 diaphramic breaths, right? In through the nose, relax, let it out. Or do box breathing, which we’ve talked about previously in Daily Growth Hacks. But do it at least 10 times. This’ll help reset you.

Then, grab your journal, and write down exactly what you’re feeling overwhelmed about. This person was saying they’re feeling overwhelmed about their business, and managing people, and all these things. And, they were gonna throw it all away.

But once you get that down, what is it you’re actually afraid of? That is the question. And then, once you list what you’re afraid of, if you want bonus points, list out the worst case scenario, right? What’s the worst thing that could happen?

And then how can you mitigate that? Can you live with that? And yes you can is the answer. You see, once we look at the fear, we all know that fear is false evidence appearing real, or false evidence about reality, whichever acronym you like, but it’s false.

Fear is false. And so, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, and you know it’s fear, and you figured out what that fear is, and you know that fear isn’t true, you can now take a breath. You can relax a little bit more, and dive in consciously to solve the issues at hand.

That’s it for me today. As always, go to authorofyourownstory.com where you can get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your inbox each and every day. And make sure you share this with three people that you feel would benefit from this message, and that you can have conversations that matter with.

Revisit: Do It For The Photo

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6261389/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Do it for the photo. Whatever it takes. Right now there’s somebody outside hiking. There’s somebody outside swimming with sharks. Why? Because they’re doing it for the Instagram photo.

Social media’s pushed us in ways that we never thought possible. There are people out there doing crazy things. They’re becoming the authors of their own story just so they could rub it in other peoples’ faces or just so they could show people how great their lives are. I think that’s fantastic. Whatever it is for you. Maybe it’s just doing it for the photo. Maybe that’s something you get to do today. Maybe that’s something you get to decide. What would be photo-worthy for you? What would be something that if you posted on your Instagram, your Facebook, or your LinkedIn page that would be so epic that everybody around you will be proud?

More importantly, what’s that image that would make you proud? One way you can look it is looking at your younger self. So you could say, “Hey, would the 15 year old version of me actually be proud that I achieved this, be excited? Am I excited to achieve this?” Maybe that’s climbing to the top of mountain. Maybe it’s going skydiving. Maybe it’s painting. Maybe it’s actually going to a foreign country. Whatever it is for you. What is photo-worthy for you? What I want you do is grab your journal. It’s simple. Write that down. What’s something you can think of right now that’s photo-worthy?

If you can’t think of something, that’s fine. Go through Instagram and Facebook and look at some ideas. Look up the most adventurous travel places to go. Get a magazine like the Robb Report or National Geographic Explorer. Give yourself some ideas. That’s nothing wrong with that. On the path to becoming the author of your own story sometimes it’s really good to read somebody else’s. What I mean by that is actually not only reading autobiographies, but reading into other peoples’ lives and getting inspiration. There’s nothing wrong with inspiration. What I want you to do is list at least a few objects, in your mind, body, soul, relationships and business, a few things that you think would be photo-worthy. Now your opportunity is go out and do it. Make sure you tag AYS so we can follow you and make sure you’re going out and being the author of your own story.

Being Found Everywhere

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6257044/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Somebody from the Author of Your Own Story group on Facebook reached out to me and asked me what I thought was the most important thing for them building their own brand. Many of you have a business that you own, or are planning on launching a business, or looking at journeying out into the world in a whole nother way.

One of the keys to doing that is being found everywhere. Oftentimes, as business owners or people of influence, we expect people to find us and to communicate to us on a platform that we are on. For many of us, that could be Twitter, or maybe it’s Facebook that you like, or maybe you’re just Instagram or LinkedIn, or Pinterest, or something else. The thing to be really conscious of is your ideal fans, clients, they can be anywhere on the internet. This makes it really crucial for you to have a very big presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and a great looking website.

Now, the key to all of this is being found everywhere. You don’t want to leave any holes in your marketing. Now, your website is your home base. This is the place where you want your clients to go and find you. Whether they’re finding you through organic search or you’re actually directing them there through an offer or through a social media post. Now, you also want to have solid SEO and good site speed on there. Google made a big, big, announcement saying that site speed, for the first time officially, would be relevant for search engine optimization. This is really important for you, especially if you’re doing advertising. This is your home base. This is the one thing on the internet that you control. You can’t control Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn. They’re here today, gone tomorrow, changing the rules left and right. Your website is something that you get to control.

With that said, you need to have a great presence on every social media platform you can. It’s important to be out there. Have your podcast or show. Be on Facebook and be doing Facebook Lives and adding value. Have communities, groups. Responding to other people’s groups and communities. Again, if you’re not in the Author of Your Own Story Facebook group, you want to get on there right away. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people. These are people that are going to excel you, help you get to the future that you want to live into.

It’s important to be omnipresent and be found everywhere. Not just on the platforms you like, but everywhere, via email as well. The one thing I want you to take from this quick daily growth act is to make sure your online presence reflects your offline presence. Oftentimes, when I do an audit of somebody comes up, we sell a product at Brand Innovation called The Authority Creator, where we actually somebody and makes them an authority in whatever niche that they’re working in. The way that we do this is we make them everywhere. In other words, we put their content out all over the internet, so you have to find them. If you’re searching for a product or service that they’re involved in, you will find them and find them first.

One of the things that we do is we do an audit of all of their social media marketing, as well as just their general digital footprint. Oftentimes, we find is a Facebook page be disjointed, a Twitter profile might have an old profile picture from 20 years ago. It’s really mind-blowing.

The key takeaways here, from this daily growth hack, is, if you are a business owner, or an expert in any field, or looking at going on your own journey, make sure you can be found everywhere. I want you to be found by your ideal customers. I’m assuming, if you’re listening to this, you’re a great person and the products and the services you have, have amazing value. Now, it’s just your chance to get found. This is just the first step. Now, of course, if you have questions, reach out to me directly or post something in the Author of Your Own Story group. My team and I will be happy to help you. I want to see you succeed and I want to see you get to your journey, on your path of the author of your own story lifestyle.

That’s it for me today. As always, share this with three people and grow your tribe, so you have accountability partners and people to work with. Of course, go over to authorofyourownstory.com, get on our mailing list. That way, you get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your inbox. I look forward to hearing from you. Always, go out, inspire somebody by being the author of your own story.

Pause For A Bit

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6252922/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I was talking to a business owner, not a coaching client of mine, but I was actually getting an ART session done. This is an Active Release Technique to actually help relieve the strain on your joints. I was having some shoulder issues from my workouts and past injuries that I’ve had. I was talking to this gentleman. What he was telling me was in the area of his relationship. He was actually telling me about his marriage. This is our first session, so he was just talking to me about it and he was very open and transparent, which I really enjoyed. One of the things he told me about was he was actually focused on what he should do. He’s like, “Doug, I just think about this all the time. What are my next steps? What are the things that I should be doing? I just can’t stop thinking about it. In fact, I think about it so much that actually, I’m not making sales call, I’m not calling customers back, I’m not marketing myself. It’s really going down from a spiral.”

Now you got to understand, he knew coming in that I coached business owners because the person that referred me was a client of mine. When he was sharing this with me, he had no idea that I talk about the Five to Thrive. He was just sharing his relationship and happened to relate it to the fact that his business wasn’t working well. What he said was really important. What he said was, “I’m focused so much on this and trying to solve this problem.” It happened to be in the area of his relationship, that it was just consuming him.

This is what I told him. I said, “Hey, look. Are you looking for advice here?” He said, “Yeah. I’d like to know what you think.” I said, “Look, I think what you need to do is pause for a bit. What I mean by that is actually go mountain biking, go do something you like and don’t think about the problem.” How many times have you or I, I know at least me, you have a problem and just sleep on it and the next day somehow, subconsciously, it’s solved, or an idea pops out to you in the shower and you’re just like, “Oh, that’s the answer. I got a great idea now.” It happens to me all the time and I’m sure it happens to you. I told him the same thing. I said, “Just pause for a bit.”

Now I didn’t tell him to go meditate, which is what I would recommend many of my clients do, is take a 20-minute meditation regardless of the type of meditation you want. There are guided meditations and I have guided meditations I’ve recorded that I give to clients. You can do a lot. I like davidji. I like a lot of them that are out there. Or you can do more of a Vipassana style meditation, which I’ve done as well. Totally up to you. You could also just as easily go for a walk, go for a mountain bike ride, work out, whatever it is that takes your mind off the problem. Pause for a bit.

Now I’ve seen this so many times in the area of business in my own life where I’m just stressed about finances, making payroll in the past, all these things because I didn’t forecast, all these little things. They would consume me and I’d miss out spending time with my family. I’d miss out spending time with my friends. I’d physically be there, sure, but I wasn’t mentally there. Does that sound familiar to you? If it does, I’m going to encourage you to use this technique and just pause for a bit, even if that pausing is counting to 10 backwards and taking 10 diaphragmatic breaths. Really, if you can take longer time off of the problem, it seems to work itself out.

I haven’t heard back from him. I don’t know if it works for him, but I can tell you if you’ve been in this situation and I get in a situation a lot where things can consume me or at least in the past I did, I recommend you pause for a bit. Grab your journal, write down your Five to Thrive. Your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business and then where is something consuming you? Are you consumed as many people are about your body? What diet should I do? Or I’m not doing the right things. Or is it in your business or relationship? I hear this all the time just like this gentleman. If you’re a business owner and your relationships aren’t working, nothing’s working. Your business isn’t working and vice versa. If your business isn’t working, your relationships aren’t working. That’s why we have the Five to Thrive. You want to have a balance in those five key areas.

If that’s happening for you, I want you to take a pause. I want you to think about the problem and then not. Sounds simple, I know. You’re saying, “Doug, how can I not think about the problem? It’s consuming me.” Well, what I want you to do is do something else. Maybe painting is for you. Maybe bike riding. Maybe walking. Whatever it is, do something totally different. Volunteer somewhere where are diving in helping somebody else. Coach somebody. Take a couple of these Daily Growth Hacks and work with an employee, with a friend, and use some of these tactics and tell them, “Hey. I’m working on stuff myself and will you do it with me?” When you are teaching someone, you can’t think about your own problems because you’re worried about them, right? You’re helping them out. That’s another thing you can do.

Whatever you do, take time to pause and get away from your problem and subconsciously it just tends to work itself out. Answers seem to flow through you. That’s it for me today. Make sure you share this with at least three people that you know so you can build your accountability, build your tribe, and help somebody else out. Of course, go over to Authorofyourownstory.com and make sure you get on our newsletter if you haven’t already. I want to make sure you’re getting the latest tips, tricks, techniques, news, and information about the Author of Your Own Story tribe and things that we’ve got going on here. I will see you tomorrow. Go out and inspire somebody today by being the author of your own story.

When To Know To Make The Jump

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6250090/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I got an email just this morning from somebody that I’ve done lots of business within the past, and what I didn’t know was they actually had a full-time job, and their side hustle was what I was hiring them to do. Which is great. They’re a phenomenal worker. When they reached out to me, and two of their other mentors, and said, “Hey, look you guys, I would like to leave my current job, my full-time job that I have. It’s not fulfilling for me. I’d like to delve into the work that I’ve been working with you on.” And so, the work that I know that he was doing, and he made a list of all the things that he’d been working with all three of those. And kudos to him. He had three mentors, and I knew about the other two mentors, and I think it was really smart. He was building his foundation and gaining his knowledge. And he got to a point where he just had a ton of knowledge and was ready to apply. The problem was, he wasn’t sure when to make that jump.

Now to him, something that was really important was financial security. Now, he had gained the knowledge. He had worked with coaches and mentors, me being one of them, and he had proven himself time and time and time again. So, I’m going to tell you exactly what I told him. A shortened version, but I’ll give you an idea of when to make that jump. Because I know a lot of you are in a similar situation, where you’re either a business owner and now you’re really an employee in your business. Right? Your business owns you. Or you’re an employee somewhere that you’re just not happy. So, when do you know to make the jump? Especially if financial security is really important to you.

So, first thing, do you know how much money you need? Most people don’t. When I’m usually talking to somebody about when to take the jump, or when to take that leap, they think the amount of money they need to survive is a lot more than it really is. So, what I want you to do is, is write out six months of expenses. Right? Write out six months of your expenses. That’s living. Do you have a roof over your head? I mean, if you’re living at home with your parents, okay, maybe you don’t have any rent. Maybe you’re living with friends. You know, maybe you can crash on the couch. But maybe your rent, let’s just say it’s $500, or $1,000, or $1,500. Whatever it is. Maybe it’s your mortgage. Write that down.

And then, what are your basic food expenses? Right? You’re just basic. You’re not going out to dinner. You’re not going to happy hour with friends. But, you know, if you need to survive, what are your basic food expenses? Right? You know, you have clothes, so we’re going to stop that. And then utilities, right? You have a car payment, gas, just basic utilities. Again, what do you need to survive? Now, this isn’t to thrive because that’s the second one.

Now that you have that number, what you need six months, we’re going to go ahead and break that down, divide by six. Right? Then you know exactly how much money you need to bring in each and every month, just to survive, while you’re going after your passion. While you’re doing your side hustle, whatever it is for you. Right? Now I encourage you, and I encouraged this person to save up six months of just-in-case money, so you have that as a buffer. But now you know what you have to do.

My guess is, that that amount of money is so much smaller than you thought it was. Right? Everybody that I’ve done this exercise with is, kind of goes all the way, “Wow. That’s a lot less money than I thought.” And that’s because we all have subscriptions, we have, you know, Netflix, or whatever it is for you. We’re going to happy hour, we’re going out to dinner, way more than we probably think. You know? We’re doing all these extra little things that we can cut back on if it allows us to chase our dreams.

Now the second thing that I would tell you to do, is looking at financial vitality. Now, this is an exercise I did with Scott Harris, my wife and I did, almost six years ago at this point. And so, when you look at … And I’m not telling you exactly the formula, and I don’t have it in front of me, but then really what you go to is the next step, financial vitality. Now that’s your basics. Right? Your rent, your utilities, and your food.

But now we’re going to add in clothes. Right? How much are you going to spend on clothes? Just a little bit, right? I’m assuming that you don’t splurge, and maybe you do, but I’m assuming you don’t. So, maybe it’s an extra pair of jeans or a shirt. You know, whatever it is for you. So, write that down, on your average, and you can look back at your budget if you’re using something like QuickBooks, as I do, or Mint. I like Mint a lot for managing personel. There’s a ton. every dollar is the one Dave Ramsey sells and recommends. So, whatever it is, look back at how much you’re spending on your clothes, and divide that in half. Right? This is vitality. So it’s just a basis. It’s another step up. And then give yourself a little spending cash for going out each month. Not each week, but each month, and lets you live your life.

We’re also going to add in a few other little extras. Right? A little extra for yourself. So, your food quality is going to go up a little bit. You’re going to have a little bit more money to spend, but not a lot. If you’re single, maybe it’s a date night with your wife if you’re, I mean, certainly, if you’re single, but if you’re married. If you’re single, then maybe it’s just date night, going out on dates.

And the next one we’re going to look at is financial independence. Right? So now we want to figure out the amount that’s going to give us true financial independence. Now the amount of money that you’re going to be bringing in that allows you to do all the things that you want to do. Right? Just all of them. Go ahead and just go crazy. Entertainment, travel, you know, we’re covering all the bases in vitality, but we’re adding on to it now. And so really go at it and look at that number. Right? What do you need per month or per year? So, you want to know both of those numbers.

And then, absolute financial freedom. Now, this is the sky’s the limit. This is you in your palace. Right? You’re palatial … You have an extra car, that car of your dreams. You know, you have the house. You have the investments. Right? That’s going to allow you to roll over. So, you have investments that are going to pay dividends that are going to pay for your lifestyle.

So, having these four numbers in front of you allows you to make more educated decisions and pulls you into your dreams. I always hear, or often hear people say, “I want to be rich, or I want to be wealthy.” But what does that mean? What’s that number? It’s such a … You know, you can’t really grab onto it. How do you know you get there? So my wife and I did this exercise, like I said, about six years ago. It was, again, mind-blowing, on how little money we really needed. You know? It was easy. I mean, we could have got a job at Starbucks and done just fine. Right? And so that became a life decision as we were going on the Author of Your Own Story lifestyle together now. Right? Before, I was doing it solo. We met, and now we’re going together on this path. We need to look at that.

Now, of course, we didn’t want, you know, just that. We wanted vitality. We want absolutely financial independence. Right? Financial freedom is what we are after. And so, knowing those numbers, we know what milestones we have to hit. And then we get to make a decision. What is that worth to us? Right? What is that worth to us to go after that? So, for us, total financial freedom is what we want. Absolute financial freedom.

But it wasn’t worth sacrificing. You know, it wasn’t worth me working 15 hours a day. You know? I run six different companies. I coach some of the most successful people in the world. But at the same time, I spend just a boatload of time with my family, and myself, doing things that fill me up. Snowboarding, going on adventures, scuba diving, traveling around the world. I get to do my epic Author of Your Own Story lifestyle. And so it’s going to take us, potentially, longer to get to that goal, but that was a conscious decision. Because we know exactly the number that we need to hit, and now we have a roadmap on how to get there. And that’s worth it to us.

And so, I’m going to tell you what I told him, and it’s laid out, is figure out exactly what you need to survive. Save up six months of that, and then figure out, hey, can I have a side hustle at what at this gentleman does? In fact, he works with me, and I hire him to do special projects. And figure out your side hustle, can you get your side hustle cover your monthly nut? And if it can, go for it. Just go for it. You know, I’m an entrepreneur, so I just go for it anyway, but I want you to think about if you need financial security, this is just another avenue to give you that safety net that you need. And if for some reason you get sick, injured, something happens, you have six months saved up of that safety net that you’re okay. And that’ll give you that peace of mind to really go after it and move forward. And when you go after it and move forward, I want you to go after it with tenacity. Right? This is your life, your dream, and you have to grab it and let it pull you into the future.

That’s it for me today. Go ahead and grab your draw. I’d love to hear how this exercise works for you. Reach out to me. You can find me on social media. I’m just about everywhere. Of course, you can also reach to me through the Author of Your Own Story community on Facebook. Make sure you share this with at least three people. Three people that you think could hear this and help you keep accountable, and you keep them accountable, so you’re building your own tribe. Your own tribe of people going to the Author of Your Own Story, breaking through the matrix and getting out there. All right. I will see you tomorrow. Have a great day, and go inspire someone by doing something different, and that’s being you. Being the Author of Your Own Story.

What’s Your Normal?

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6246740/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

This morning, a weekend day, I got up early and actually did a few things in my business. It’s something that I enjoy doing. Of course, I journaled and did my morning routine. But then I went to the gym, I went to the gym and took part in an exercise class, one that I’ve been going to for several months. Now, this was the first time that somebody else actually showed up to the exercise class. Apparently, on Saturday mornings, nobody shows.

So the funny thing about this is, after that, I came home, cooked breakfast, ate with my family, played with my son, and then my wife and I decided to go for a hike, and we climbed one of the mountains here in beautiful Bend, Oregon. Now, we did this all in the day and actually ended up at a brewery where I had a beer and a burger and just enjoyed an afternoon. And so when I actually talked to several of my friends, because I posted something about it on social media, I got a flood of messages coming in, like I can’t believe you did that. Wow, that’s so amazing.

It was interesting, I turned to my wife and I thought, geez, you know, everybody’s commenting about how amazing this is, they’re sending me private messages on Instagram and on Facebook and even Linked In. And they’re saying geez, that’s just amazing that you took time out this year to do that. I thought, this year? This is normal, and I’m not saying this to brag, it just kind of blows my mind to think about that. And so I reached out to one of the people that reached out to me, it’s a good friend of mine, we’ve been friends for over 20 years, and I just said hey, you know like what do you do on a typical weekend? I’m just curious because you were saying how amazing my day is, and really it’s just normal for me.

And he said, wow geez, actually I slept in, you know, and then I kind of rolled out of bed and went on the couch and just kind of went over, checked the news, and just sat there a little bit, my kids were running around and doing their thing, and I just of just relaxed. The word he used is, I just kicked it, and just relaxed, and my wife, you know, she was kind of doing her thing. Around noon or so, we kind of got together to get the kids out, took them to a friends house, and then I came back home, and you know, kind of caught up on a couple of shows, and kind of just dinked around the house, Doug.

It got me to thinking, wow, what is your normal? What is my normal? Right, and oftentimes when I have these discoveries, these discoveries with clients that I’m working with, we’re just people that are going out there, and talking. You know, that are reaching out to me and telling me what’s going on in their lives. I love that. And I started thinking, what is my normal in my five to thrive? And is that okay with me? And so I started looking at it, and I journaled, and I would encourage you to do the same right, be your own coach.

So in the area of your mind, right, for me, in the area of my mind, what is my normal? Right. And is that good enough? Is that where I want it to be is the most important … So I wrote down what my normal is for me, and then I decided, you know what, that isn’t where I want to be. And so I’m going to make a shift, I’m going to make a change, and I actually started right away after I journaled that. And then what about, in the area of my body, what is my normal, and is that good enough for me?

Ironically, I was like, you know what? I could be doing more, as a matter fact I would like to be, mobility is something I need to work on, or would choose to work on. So I wrote that down and took action immediately. And then I said well geez, what about in the area of my spirituality? I said oh you know I’m good there, my normal’s actually pretty good for me. What about relationships? Yeah you know, I feel like I’m good there too, yeah, I could use some improvements, but I like my normal, in that area. And then what about business? What is my normal?

And I thought you know what, I could raise the bar there a little bit more too. And so I’m actually opening up my coaching programs. So I’m opening up for more clients, I typically only take five clients for a year, my full year program, I’m sticking to that, but in the other programs we’re just launching, from my own personal coaching, is I’m launching a six month and 90-day program. So, what I’m asking you to do is grab your journal, write out your five to thrive, right. And what I encourage you to do something, as I was working with a couple of my clients is, another category I work on is wealth.

Wealth can be anything that it means to you, but for most of us, it means our bank account, right? Our investments, you know, what do we have in the bank? And then write down, what is your normal? What’s normal for you? Is it normal for you to work out one day a week or six days a week? Or are you an iron man, or are you somebody that’s just happy to be able to walk around the block and play with your kids?

You know, whatever it is for you is good, right, it’s your story. And then write that out in your five to thrive, but ask yourself, is your normal what you want? Right? Is your normal what’s going to get you to the author of your own story lifestyle? And if it’s not, make a drastic change today. In this moment, never leave the source or place of making a decision without making a drastic change. That’s how we become the authors of our own story, and not getting stuck in somebody else’s story.

My normal’s going to be different than yours, in fact, a lot of people are going to look at my normal and say geez that guy’s a slacker, and some people are like wow, he’s just doing too much. Right, but that’s my normal, and it’s up to me. And as long as I’m living in my path, in my lane, I am going to be happy and fulfilled. And that’s what I’ve discovered over the years. And I want the same for you.

So many of you have reached out to me, and I love it, thank you so much for the messages. And, a few I’m backlogged on, and I apologize, but I’ll get back to you. You’re sharing your journey, right, and we talk about this. With my coaching clients as well. Is make sure it’s your journey and not somebody else’s. And then go after it. The worst thing in my eyes that could happen is, one year from today you’re in the exact same place that you’re in right now, and you don’t want to be. If you want to move forward, move forward. If you’re stuck, reach out and I’ll help you get unstuck, that’s what I do professionally and I’d be happy to help you.

As always, share this with at least three people that you know, so they can benefit from having this kind of work, and being their own coach, and make you accountable. And remember, listening to this is just digesting content, do the work, that’s the key here. Do the work, do the work, do the work. And you’ll actually thank me and thank yourself, which is more important.

That’s it for me today, as always, go out and inspire someone simply by being the author of your own story. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Get Support

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6245029/height/90/theme/custom/autoplay/no/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="100%" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Now, you’ve read it before probably or at least you just know this intuitively but people that have large family networks close to them tend to recover from illness and injury much faster than those of us who have families spread out all over or just one or two people around.

The reason being is because when those people actually get sick or injured their family rushes in to support them and they recover so much faster. Now, it’s not just the fact their family’s doing things for them, although that is a key component. It’s actually having that emotional support as well as the physical support that allows them to rebound so much quicker. Now, how often do many of us actually need that support, especially for those of us that are business owners?

We need support in our business yet we’re taught by society that we should be doing this all on ourselves. I used to, at least for me, I used to love and cherish the fact that I could pull myself up by my own bootstraps and do it myself and I will out grind anybody. At the same time, I would always complain that I was doing it alone. I had this revolving story going around in my life where I was talking as a business owner. I was running multiple businesses and my story went something like this.

It went, when something bad would happen I would get mad because there was no one there to help me. I didn’t have an assistant, I didn’t have a partner, I didn’t have all these other things that other people had. My employees should be doing this, that, and the other and helping me out and I was doing everything. I also had the story that I could do everything and I was a bigger man because I could pull myself up by my own bootstraps.

I taught myself how to program websites, I taught myself how to do finance, I taught myself marketing, I taught myself construction so I could belt out my gym when I had a gym. I taught myself all of these skills by myself rather than just asking for support. Now, early on in my career I eventually found mentors and I talk about this and you should invest in mentors, for a business owner I think that is number one.

I found mentors and coaches and once I got that support from those mentors and coaches that’s when both my business and my personal life exploded like a rocket ship. I had the support, I had people that had been there and done that and I had the support. I had people showing me different ways of being, showing me different ways to think about things. In fact, my first business coach focused mostly on about four inches of space, the space between my ears.

I hired this business coach because I thought, “I need support, I need tactics. I need strategies, I need to grow my business and beat the competition and really get more leads coming in. What my business coach did, and he was one of the most successful business people I’ve ever known. What he did is he sat me down and we talked, and what we talked about was my philosophy, my ways of being in life, how was I supporting myself?

What he told me was, if I wasn’t supporting myself and getting support from other people the tactics, tricks, they couldn’t do anything. Now, I was young, I was in my early twenties and I partly didn’t want to hear that but I also knew he was right because I was stuck. I was stuck in a position and I knew, I felt like I was spinning my wheels and I knew if I didn’t get more support and if I didn’t do the changes he was suggesting the worst thing that could happen would be I’d be in the same position two, three, four, five years from now that I am in now, or at least back then that’s what I was thinking.

That scared me. I like to grow, I like to change and so I got that support. I hired more coaches and mentors and I worked on my mental game and that allowed me to catapult myself. Eventually, fast forward to where we are today more than 10 years later, I’ve developed the Five to Thrive System and I developed Author of Your Own Story so I could support you, I could support more people out there. That support really, there was nobody living this lifestyle, this business lifestyle thing that I was talking back at the time so I had to figure it out. I had to build the systems, I had to build the way out.

Since then, I’ve helped tons and tons of business owners get unstuck, get the support they need and really get clarity, and I want that for you. First, what I want you to do is grab your journal, write down your five to thrive; your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business. Look in there and look where you could use some support. In the area of your mind is there something that you want to learn and do you know somebody else that already knows the answers and knows the subject better than you do? Of course, you do.

Seek out that mentor, seek out that adviser. Usually, there’s a significant exchange of capital, resources, energy, time, but they’re going to shorten the gap for you and allow you to explode like my mentors did for me, in your body. Maybe you want to hire a coach, maybe you need support from friends. I know in the fitness industry which I’ve been in for over 20 years the number one thing I’ve seen is accountability. We all need accountability. Get that support from a friend, a loved one or hire a trainer. In the area of your soul where do you need support?

Where do you need to feel love? Is it someone to take you to church, mosque, temple or is it someone to sit down with you and just meditate with you and spend time and just be. Where is it actually in your relationships that you need support? Do you need support from a loved one, your family, your friends, your spouse? Where about your business do you need support? Do you need a mentor? Do you need a coach? Do you need support in the area of your finances? Hire a bookkeeper, an accountant or a financial adviser, where do you need your support so that when we have this conversation, a conversation about you two years from now the conversation’s totally different?

What I don’t want for you to be is in a situation that I thought I was going to be in my early twenties, a long time ago, almost 20 years ago. I don’t want you to be stuck, I don’t want you to have the same conversation, the same complaints that you’re having today two years from now. You deserve to move forward, you deserve to live a life with total fulfillment and freedom and I’d love to help you get there. Like I always tell you, if you’re looking for a coach or mentor reach out to me and I’m happy to refer you to somebody. I have a huge network of coaches and mentors that focus on different areas and if you’re looking for somebody I’d be happy to help you.

I want you to have guides and support along your journey, to be the author of your own story, not my story, your story. That’s the key to this whole path, the whole journey that we’re all on, it needs to be about you because this is your life and I want you to live it fully. Reach out to me, find me on social media, send me an email. Whatever’s easiest for you I’m happy to help you. See, I coach business owners and only business owners so you don’t happen to be a business owner, and I know many of you aren’t that listen to the Daily Growth Acts I’ll send you to somebody else or a course or give you a recommendation that you can do on your own. I’m happy to do that. I do that every day for people.

That’s it. I invite you to share this with three people so you can have the support, so you can build your tribe. I want people to be supporting you in your journey to be the author of your own story. That journey can be rocky and having that support is critical. It also opens up conversations that matter. Share this with three people right now and then as always go over to authorofyourownstory.com if you haven’t already and get on that email list so you can get the latest tips, tricks, and techniques delivered right to your inbox. That’s it for me today, I will see you tomorrow. Remember, go out and inspire someone simply by being the author of your own story.
