Drugs on Your Birthday

Today I’m gonna tell you a little story about a client of mine. Now, this client is very successful again, and I say again because they were successful many years ago. But the reason I’m telling you this story is because his birthday is actually today. We were talking yesterday about his birthday and what it means to him. What he let me know is a year ago he was a full on drug addict.

It started off many years ago with an addiction to painkillers. Now, this is an epidemic sweeping the world, but especially the United States. His addiction to painkillers also ran into other things like heavy use of cocaine, alcohol, pot, as well as other drugs. He became known as the life of the party during this period. Now, don’t get me wrong, before he was addicted to painkillers, from what he tells me, he was the life of the party. He was a business owner, extremely successful, and had a great relationship.

Everybody from the outside looking in thought this guy had it all, but the truth was … the truth was he was actually trying to commit suicide several times. He wasn’t living the life of his dreams. Each birthday he would throw, people would come for the party. He was the life of the party, and on his birthday they would give him drugs. They would give him drugs to help celebrate. They knew that’s what he liked, and they knew that’s what filled him up at that time. Now, of course, he was chasing sedation at that moment.

Fast forward to today, he’s been sober for a year, and now he’s scared. He said, “Doug, I’m scared. My birthday’s coming, people are texting me, they want to know where the party is, and I’m scared that they’re going to bring me drugs. I’m scared that I’m going to get back into the old lifestyle. I’m scared that they have the old identity of me. I’m scared that I’ll relapse. I’m scared that my identity won’t be there. You see, Doug, I haven’t done this, I haven’t done that. I haven’t done all the things you’ve told me to do. You know, you give me these coaching assignments each week, and I haven’t kept up with all of them. I’m just not a successful, I’m a failure, and I’m afraid I’ll go back.”

So what I told him is what I’m gonna tell you, and if you’ve listened to this podcast, if you go back to boxing gloves, which we had earlier, it’s a very similar story. You see, he was reflecting back on his old life, and while he was reflecting back he was taking all the baggage that he had from the past and bringing it with him and just piling it on, and now he was scared.

He was scared because he was remembering the old him, the old person he was. He was scared because he was beating himself up. He was thinking about all the things he did not have. He knew, his eyes were open now. We’d been coaching for two months at this point, and his eyes had opened to what’s possible. His life had become much more glorious than he ever knew. He didn’t realize what happiness really was, and now he was experiencing it. Now that he was experiencing it, and now he’s in his 40s he was like, “All the years I’ve missed. People thought I had it all, but I really didn’t, and you opened my eyes.”

It wasn’t me, I’m just your mirror. I’m just reflecting what other people do, that’s my job. What I told him was, “Hey, why don’t you take your birthday and take some time to reflect on all the great things you’ve done? Yeah, you had that past. That past made you the man you are today, the person you are today. Be grateful. Be grateful for all things that you have. Be grateful that you’re repairing relationships that you’ve burnt. Be grateful that you’re sober now and you can actually see. Be grateful that you’re building a life with your children, a life that you didn’t have previously. Be grateful that you’re building a business of your dreams. Not just a business that brings you money, but a business that brings you success. Take this time on your birthday to reflect and be grateful. Stop beating yourself up.”

Now, the words I used weren’t like that. I told him, “Hey, you have two choices. It’s your birthday. You can either go someplace quiet, go with your girl. Take some time, reflect, be positive, be grateful. Think of all the successes you’ve had over just the couple of months we’ve been working together. You’ve grown so much.”

If you’re listening to this podcast or watching this on a video, think of yourself. You’re in a growth state. Be grateful. Be proud of yourself. You deserve a pat on the back.

“Option two is to go into the corner and just kick yourself in the nuts,” is what I told him, “or beat yourself up, or use boxing gloves, whatever you want to do. You have two choices, you can beat yourself up for the things that you don’t have, or you can be grateful for the abundance in the things that you do have. The choice is completely yours, but I can tell you the walk is completely different as well. Those that walk in a spirit of gratefulness and abundance and thankful for all they have and those around them, they actually are the ones that I see succeed and the ones that I advance.”

So today on his birthday, I’m gonna ask you, listening to this or watching this, whatever you’re doing, take a moment today and journal about all the things you’re grateful for, all the successes. If you’re sitting there going, “Geez Doug, I don’t have anything to be grateful for,” well I’m grateful that you’re here spending time with me. I’m grateful that you’re taking time out of your day to be a better human being because you being a better human being is gonna make the world a better place. By making the world a better place, this is gonna be a better world for my son to grow up in, and for that I thank you.

That’s it for me today. I look forward to talking to you tomorrow. As you know, we will be giving you a tip each day, but go to authorofyourownstory.com, where you can join our community, talk to other people, listeners, as well and answer questions, but also get deeper dives where you can dive deeper into these subjects, as well as taking our free seven-day course on how to be the author of your own story.

Five to Thrive

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5420921/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

We have a different episode today because I received several questions – thank you all for your feedback.

I received several questions on, “Doug, what the heck is the 5 to thrive? You mention it in every podcast and every video. What is it?”

Well, if you go to AuthorofYourOwnStory.com we have several courses that lead you into a deeper dive in What Is The 5 To Thrive?

The 5 To Thrive is something that I base all my coaching on. I’ve been coaching and doing personal business development for many years. I’ve been doing it since I was in high school and am in my 40s now, so you can do the math.

But, what I’ve learned is there are five key elements to a holistic and successful life.

MIND… what do I mean?

Mind means bettering yourself. Reading materials, listening to videos, listening to podcasts like Author of Your Own Stories Daily Growth Hacks and putting them into practice, of course.

What are you doing to expand your knowledge base? What are you doing to expand yourself and your skills as a human being? That’s what I mean by mind.

BODY. Body is health. Health, wellness, and fitness. Now, I don’t consider any of those to be the same. I think you can be extremely fit, and not necessarily healthy. I have a diverse background in the fitness field with over 18 degrees and certifications and I can tell you first hand that I know a lot of really fit people who are not healthy.

So when I say body, I mean, how are you embracing your body, this vessel, this carrier that carries your mind and your soul right now? How are you embracing and making sure that it’s healthy each and every day?

SOUL. Soul is the one that most of my clients get caught up on as well as most of the people that I talk about. You know, soul can mean a lot of things to a lot of people and I’m certainly not here to put my Dogma upon you.

Soul can mean going to church for you, soul could be meditation, soul could be time in nature, soul can be spending time with your family that just really enraptures you and makes you feel good. Really, just anything that fills you up at a deeper deeper level.

RELATIONSHIPS. We’re all in relationships. I’m in a relationship with you, you’re in a relationship with me. If you have a significant other, kids, we all have parents, or have had parents in the past. We’re in relationships with coworkers, relationships with a person at a
coffee shop, etc.

Relationships make the world go round. Human beings are social animals. We were made to be social… that part is built into us as one of our survival mechanisms.

So, how are your relationships? Are they fake? Now, if you were to rate yourself in relationships from a scale of 1 to 10, what do you give yourself? You know most people when I first asked that question would say “Oh, Doug I give myself a 7, 8, 9, 10.” But when we really dig deep it comes down to how well people really know you. What are your relationships? Are they give and take? Are they give? Or do you lead with love? That’s what we mean by relationships.

BUSINESS. Now, business I think is really important. I have a diverse business background. I’m an entrepreneur. I do a lot of business consulting, that’s one of my main sources of income now with business. What are you doing to better yourself? Business isn’t bad. Money is not bad. It’s how you use it.

Money and business just amplify the person you already are. So, what are you doing today to help your business grow?

Now, if you’re not an entrepreneur or business owner, maybe you’re an intrapreneur. An intrapreneur is somebody who actually works within another business. It’s somebody that’s helping that business grow and helping themselves as well.

What are you doing to uplevel? What are you doing to make yourself indispensable in your marketplace?

Now, maybe you’re like a couple of my clients who are so liquid that they don’t work anymore. Okay, that’s fine! So when I say business maybe you take your philanthropy or maybe you take another big big goal you have. A BHAG. A “big hairy audacious goal”.

Now, I know some people use a “big hairy ass goal”, whatever you want to say. If you don’t want to do business, pick a goal that just scares you and really moves you and use that in place of business and that’s fine.

But for 99% of you listening to this or watching this on Youtube or any other video channel, what I really want you to consider is what in business can you do? And oftentimes that’s going be your take-home revenue, right? How much are you actually taking home?

How much are you actually taking home? What are you bringing home? What’s your bottom line? What are your business goals?

So that’s the “5 to thrive” and you want to have something in those categories every single day and definitely every single week.

Now, if you go over and take our 7-Day Free Course, it’s just an intro course that we filmed on how to start becoming the Author Of Your Own Story. Just go over to authorofyourownstory.com right now.

The course, right now as I speak, is free. It is in seven days and we dive a little deeper into this.

We actually set up a 30-day game, which is a challenge game that allows you to dive deep into that 5 to thrive in your own personal life and above and beyond. These are the exercises that I have clients who are paying me over six figures (my last client paid me $150,000 to work with them) do.

I’m not saying that to impress you but I’m saying that to impress upon you the importance of this, the importance of “The 5 To Thrive”. I take them through this exact same process one-on-one diving obviously deeper than I can with you right now, but I do this for 90 days. And every 90 days we rebuild their 5 to thrive based on long-term visions.

And of course, it changes. Sometimes people don’t always hit it, and that’s okay. It’s about the person you become on that road. So right now, something you can do is grab your journal, draw a big circle and add in the 5 to thrive. Divide five areas – so 5 triangles in that 5 to thrive – mind, body, soul, relationships, and business.

So each pie in that circle it’s going to be a name, where do you fall on a scale of 1-10 being – “oh my God, I’m just amazing”. If it’s body, “you’ve got the rocking body”…whatever that means to you, right?

It could mean:

  • a six-pack
  • you can run ultra marathons
  • you bench press 300 pounds

Or maybe for you body means:

  • the ability to play with your grandkids
  • the ability to do those everyday activities that you want to do
  • maybe it’s hiking
  • or maybe you’re in a wheelchair and maybe it’s wheeling around
  • or maybe it’s just taking care of your internal organs
  • maybe you’re battling a disease
  • having a green smoothie every single day, whatever it is

Where are you on that scale and be honest! You can only lie to yourself, right? No one else needs to see this journal. Be honest with yourself. Where are you on that 5 to thrive with each one, so mind, body, soul, relationships, and business, where are you?!

Now if you’re not at an eighth or above in any one of those categories, you need to dive deep and focus on that. You should be at eight. Life is short… I want you to have the best, so go ahead and put that in there and I encourage you to go over to our community it’s a free online community at AuthorOfYourOwnStory.com you can find the link and share your numbers.

Share your numbers with those people. It’s a safe environment where you’re going to be with other like-minded people out here to better their lives and better the world. Because we’re all here for one reason, that is help others but also to become the Author Of Our Own Story.

Because

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5420243/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today I want to talk about the use of the word because. This is something I learned a long time ago that really opened my eyes. In fact, l would say I learned it almost 15 years ago and really recognized it not only in my own speech patterns and habits but also in those of my clients. Whether they were early on in my career as just a personal trainer, fitness professional, or moving on to what I’m doing now.

So the use of the modifier, the word “because”, think about how it’s typically used.

“I didn’t workout this morning because I stayed up late.”

Now, what I’m going to suggest is you take that word “because” and replace it with the word “and”.

“I didn’t workout this morning and I stayed up late last night.”

They’re two separate clauses, they’re not really related, they’re one and another. These are two separate facts. This is often used in the area of health, business, even relationships.

“I didn’t do the dishes last night because I was busy taking care of our child.” Okay great, now although this might seem true, really you didn’t take care of the dishes and you were busy taking care of your child or “I didn’t finish the project for my boss because Darcy had me working on a project with her.” Alright, again take out “because” replace it with “and”. “I didn’t finish my project for my boss and I was helping Darcy work on a project of hers.”

You’re going to find that when you use the word because and you replace it with and, it totally takes out the emotion, it gives you a different viewpoint on the situation. It also helps eliminate excuses. So what I want you to do today is really pay attention to what other people are saying. What words are they choosing to use in their explanation? And in your own vocabulary.

Every time that you feel like you want to use the word “because”, I want you to go ahead and replace that with and.  If you want to take it a step further, go to your journal right now, hopefully, you’re reviewing your journal on a regular basis. I know it’s tough sometimes or at least it seems tough. When you go back, look and see in your journal if you’re using the word “because”. Now, if you are, I want you to go ahead and take that sentence where you wrote because and either write on another piece of paper or just do it in your head replace it with “and”, and read the whole paragraph.

Oftentimes, what you’ll notice is that in your writing what you’re doing is you’re recording a thought, you’re recording a feeling and you use the word “because” to blame or to apply an excuse to a situation.

I highly encourage you to try this out for yourself, I’d love to hear your comments below. If you’re watching this on Youtube put them down there. If not, please go over to our Facebook community and let’s have a dialogue.

Crab Vs. Buffalo

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5411135/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today I want to talk to you about two animals that you know very well – the crab and the Buffalo and what’s the difference between the two?

Oftentimes, especially in our daily lives, we operate from the place of a crab and what I mean by that is when you put a crab or a series of crabs into a pot, what happens is one of the crabs starts to crawl out of the pot because it’s getting hot, and then the other crabs pull them back down.

Now, this is a phenomenon that’s been seen time and time again. You also see this with people. So oftentimes what happens is if somebody starts to uplevel their lives whether be in their business, or relationships are very common as well, the people around them get scared.

They get scared because they realize that they’re not doing those things that they should be doing in their lives and so they are not up leveling. What they tend to do is get scared and look at the things that are happening in their lives which cause fear and cause them to pull somebody else back down.

Another analogy to use with a crab is that there are two ways to have the tallest building in the world. One is to burn everybody else’s building down. The second one is to build it up as high as you possibly can.

Now, I would say that being a crab is actually more common than you might think. Look at social media. Look at your social media posts and profiles. When you actually post something or go out on a limb or shoot a video like this, you’re going to have a lot of people out there criticizing you and pulling you down. These are the crabs. The crab is the majority.

Now, in contrast, we have the Buffalo. The Buffalo is known for when a storm comes. The animals are running away because the storm is coming, the rain is coming down and it’s going to get vicious. Yet, the Buffalo runs to the eye of the storm. It runs to the eye of the storm because it knows that after going through that adversity of the storm, it’s going to get the sweetest grass, the freshest, wet, delicious grass that no other animal will get because it is actually there.

The Buffalo knows that if it persevered through the true tragedy or through hardship, that on the other end of that hardship is where the sweet stuff lies.

And I see this time and time again with clients that I’m working with both as a professional coach for high-level clients but also on my businesses when I’m working with other people.

Oftentimes, people sell themselves short because they’re worried about what other people will think. They’re worried about the crab. And even more importantly and what most people don’t realize is it’s the own crab that lies within you.

What is it inside of you…. that little voice that constantly says, “No, maybe I shouldn’t be doing that or I’m not good enough”. Or, “What are other people going to think?”.

These are all common crab stories. So, my question for you today is: “Where in your 5 To Thrive are you being a crab versus a Buffalo?”.

Where in your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, or your business are you allowing little things to pull you down and not up level to the power that we actually know is inside of you?

Where do you need to step up and be the Buffalo and run to the eye of the storm so you can get that sweet reward at the end?

That’s it for me today. I’d love to hear your thoughts in our Author of Your Own Story community and of course go over to AuthorOfYourOwnStory.com where you’ll get more tips, tricks, and insights on how you can uplevel your life where you can actually become more of a buffalo.

Self Worth

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5411071/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I had a coaching call with a client this morning. I’ve been working with him for a couple months now and I noticed a series of patterns going on. Now, I noticed these early on because I’ve been doing this for awhile, but I brought it to his attention again. What he was doing was he had a thriving business and as soon as he’d make a lot of money he would go out and take everybody out for dinner, drinks, he would buy a new car, he would go gambling, go to Vegas, and he would spend all his money and get rid of it and so now he’s at a stage where he has none. He doesn’t have any disposable income so he feels he needs to hustle.

The same things are happening in the area of his relationships. Things start to go well, he’s got a girlfriend, his baby’s mama. Things are going really well and then he self-sabotages. He creates a fight and then he runs from the relationship.

We see this also going with his health. He starts eating really well, he’s doing things, he’s exercising, he’s getting up early in the morning, he’s meditating, and then what he does is he goes out for a pizza binge and starts drinking again. He really starts to go through these habits that are hurting himself. And so the cycle goes.

We’re seeing that each time he gets something, each time he gets to a goal and rises up, he actually self-sabotages and loses it all. What this comes down to for him is a feeling of self-worth. You see, he doesn’t feel that he’s worthy of having these things. He doesn’t feel he’s worthy of having this money. He doesn’t feel he’s worthy of having a solid relationship with a woman that he actually really loves. He doesn’t feel he’s worthy of having the body he’s always wanted.

Feeling worthy of having the connection to himself, to his spirit, to his soul, to nature, to being outside. He doesn’t feel he’s worthy to spend time on himself and with himself. He’s scared.

His self-worth has been created when he was actually around five or six. We did some regression exercises and brought him back to a time when he was actually playing basketball with his brother or trying to play basketball with his brother and his brothers would not let him play.

He wasn’t good enough. He wasn’t old enough. He just wasn’t enough. Now, of course, in this conversation, this grown man was a powerful man who I honor. He broke down in tears and started crying because this memory of being a child was so ingrained in him. It really controlled the way he was thinking. The way was feeling was subconsciously running his system and his pattern. Now he’s in his 40s and this has been going on for 35 years, this feeling of not enough, lacking, and lack of self-worth.

This has caused him to get into drug addiction and multiple relationships and pregnancies with women he doesn’t even care about. It’s caused him to destroy relationships with those he actually does love and care about. He’s burnt bridges. He’s gone bankrupt. He’s destroyed his business. He’s destroyed his health. He’s destroyed his soul. He’s actively seeking a way of doing this, but it comes down to self-worth. I told him there’s no amount of tips or tactics or little secrets that I can give him to just do once a day that is going to help him if he can’t get over his self-worth issues,

You see if you don’t love yourself first you can’t love another person.

There’s an African proverb, and I might butcher this so I apologize, but I believe what it says is, “Don’t trust the naked man who offers you a shirt.”

The point of this is also like saying somebody who doesn’t love themselves can’t love you. If they don’t already have that within themselves they can’t give it to you and that also goes for yourself.

So what I’m asking you to do today is to think on, reflect, and journal the question: Where in your five to thrive are you lacking that self-worth? Where are you finding that pattern where you get something that you really want, whether it be the relationship that you want, whether it be the job, the bonus, the promotion that you want, whether you’re getting fit, you’re seeing that six-pack or you’re getting that energy and then you self-sabotage? Where in those five to thrive are you seeing the cycle or repeating in your life?

Now once you write that down, what I want you to do is go back and think, geez… where did this first start? Where did this feeling first start? If you can identify that then you’re on the first steps of self-love and really regenerating that.

That’s it for me today.

Remember to go to authorofyourownstory.com where we have deeper dives and more tips and tricks for you to help you become the Author of Your Own Story. You have one life to live. We want you to live it well. Take care.

One at a Time

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5406769/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today’s topic one at a time. I am Doug Holt with Author of Your Own Story’s daily growth hacks where each day we give you a tip, trick, or daily Insight on how to better yourself in what we call the five to thrive. That’s mind, body, soul, relationships, and business.

Now, today I want to talk to you entrepreneurs that are out there. So if you’re an entrepreneur or maybe you’re currently in a job and you have an entrepreneurial flare, often times we jumped what’s called “shiny object syndrome” It’s when you have one project you’re working on that project, and then all of sudden you have a light bulb idea and you jump to that project. Soon, you feel like you’re juggling plates and you have all kinds of things going on. You have 10 projects going on at once, but none of them seem to get done. You may even schedule an hour a day for each project, but still, you’re not making headway. So what I’m going to encourage you to do today is what I’ve worked with clients with and has a lot of success. If you have the time with your family that means if you have the time, and even do that home is well with your family. Pick one project, one task, and focus on that for the entire day. Now if you have a 9 -5 job, you’re working on your new business, and you’re saying “Hey, Doug, I only have an hour a night.”I totally understand.

Pick Saturday. Pick Sunday. Pick one large chunk of time that you can barrel down focus on that project or task and really work on it. What you’re going to find is as you’re working on this project, while taking breaks, of course, really making sure 20 minutes of every 45 minutes of focus time. Remember to take a break, and then come back, but having that huge chunk of time to work on that project, you’re going to start to see yourself pushing through barriers. You’re going to see yourself pushing past where you currently were and actually seeing progress. It’s that progress that allows us entrepreneurs the ability to move forward.

Now, you can do this in your home as well. If you’re watching on video, you can see right behind me, I have a project I’m working on. It’s a huge wall map that I’ll be putting right behind me. If you’re listening to this, just picture this gigantic world map. Now, I can tinker with this and work on it 20 minutes at a time, and maybe by the end of the month, I can get it done. Or I can set aside a few hours of dedicated focus time to know exactly where I left off and not have to go back and recheck those items to make sure that I’m progressing fast enough. When we have to go back and look and see “Where did I leave off?” we’re taking mental energy. We’re also wasting time. If you have the ability to dedicate on those large chunks of time to a project, you’re going to find that you’re going to progress much quicker than the other people that are around you.

That’s it for today. I encourage you to look at your 5 to Thrive. That’s mind, body, soul, relationships, and business. See where you have projects just lingering. You Don’t Want to Do the Work

Hey guys I want to shoot this really quick video for you. I woke up this morning, getting my coffee ready, and I looked down at my cell phone and I had a business owner that just blew my phone up with texts messages. Starting out with, “Doug I need your help.” Now this is a person that wants to be a coaching client of mine that I actually turned down. This is a six-figure opportunity for me. That’s what I charge for a one-year coaching program. And I just didn’t feel it was the right fit and the reason I didn’t feel is the right fit is because really what they want is my lifestyle and the lifestyle I’ve been able to develop. And what they don’t want is the actual work so instead of me telling you more about this, I’m going to let ET kick it off.

He told the guy, he said, “When you want to succeed as bad you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.” This is what I’m saying: You give 70% effort, the most, the optimal that can come out of giving 70% energy as what? 70% an outcome. That’s it. So y’all got to do me a favor for real. I’m not playing, like the energy y’all give off sucks. Like it ain’t no other way for me to say it. It sucks and I don’t care about the energy you’re giving me right now but if you’re taking this energy you giving me into the real world, you’re gonna be average. So when you get out of here, I’m talking about, “I need energy. You don’t have to be the smartest person in the world but sometimes when you’re smart, people still don’t notice you. People always notice what? Always, if you’re not careful, you’ll get electrocuted. You have to pay attention to energy and things that energize. That’s all I’m asking you to do. I’m saying most of you are not successfully not because you have reached your highest level of success. You are not successful because you stopped focusing on it. You quit focusing on it. You got a job and you just stop. You’re young and you dream cause when you get to my age you don’t have a lot of time to do it. There’s a whole lot of responsibilities, you just can’t wake up in the morning, just go walk in 30 minutes, and just dream, dream, dream. You got bills, bills, bills. You know why I laugh when your people come to me and say, “you know ET, man, I want to blow up in the speaking industry.”

I told one young man, “Let’s just be honest. What you want is the life that I have now. You don’t
want to go through the life that I went through to get to the life that I have now. Let’s be clear.”

You can have the life that I have. You can make the money I make or more if you want to. You can travel the world if you want to. But you cannot do this without the lifestyle. You can’t do this by getting up at 9 o’clock in the morning. It’s 3 o’clock. There’s a 3 o’clock grind. Look, I want to show you something. When you dream, you see this right here, when you dream, all your dreams coming home. You ever notice that when you dream, they don’t come in halves. When you dream you see the entire picture you like I’m gonna be a doctor, I’m going to be a surgeon. I’m going to make $100,000 a year, I’m going to get married. You see how he look, you see the whole thing. When you dream and close your eyes, everything is a whole. But in real life, the lifestyle isn’t a symbol.

Listen to me: I want you to dream. Why? Because energy comes from dreams. Knowledge is good. But knowledge doesn’t necessarily turn into something. When you have an imagination and you can see things, BOOM, that change your whole life. So I want you to dream: in the morning, in the afternoon, at night. I want you to dream. I’m not a scrooge, I’m not telling you “don’t do it.” What I’m telling you is: when you dream you have to understand that it comes a symbol. Everything is there, but when you wake up, the lifestyle, somebody has to put that together. Somebody has do something to make that happen. So as a student, you are in the last phase of dreaming. That’s all I’m trying to tell you. I want you to dream. If you are a freshman, go for it. You’re a sophomore, go for it. You’re a junior, you have a little more time. If you are a senior, you should be not dreaming right now. No more dreaming. If you are a senior, dreaming is over. It’s over like I need specifics: What are you doing on Monday? What are you doing on Tuesday? What are you doing on Wednesday? You need to be very specific. It’s time to put your pieces together of your puzzle. I put mine together. I put mine together. I put this life together. I made it happen. My father wasn’t here for me. My mother worked until 4. Nobody helped me to get here. I had to get up, I had to go to class, I had to read, I had to study, I had to write, I understood that the dream is real. But the lifestyle is realer. You see people on TV and you want to be that. No, it’s real. Do you have what it takes when you stick the steel plate? You ready for that? You ready for the dream? You ready for the car? And what I hate about this generation, with the Snapchat and the Instagram, you can live something that you’re not living. You can put it up there and fake it like you’re included. You’re taking a pic by somebody’s car. You can fake it as a generation like you have money when you don’t. You can fake it on Instagram but when I follow you home, let me follow you home, what you got? Let me see with your house. Let me pull up the driveway, let me see what you really got, take me into your bedroom. Y’all acting like it’s your house. You all don’t realize how sick this generation is. It’s sick. You can fake it like you got something you don’t. You can fake it like you got a life like you don’t. But you got to get your butt up and go take the LSAT and you can’t fake it when you take that test. Y’all FAKE. You want a lifestyle but you don’t want to earn it. You got to earn this.

If Eric Thomas doesn’t motivate you, I don’t know who will. That’s it for me. Just remember when you look at somebody whether it be on social media or you get a chance to know them and they’re actually at a point that you want to get to, ask them how they got there. Remember, it does take work to get to that next level and whatever you’re striving for just make sure you’re putting in that time and get going.

That’s it for me, have a great day.

Good enough?

Today’s topic: Are you living in the world of OR or the world of AND.

Hi, I’m Doug Holt and this is your daily growth hack. For each day I give you a tip, trick, or daily insight to help you become the author of your own story. Now if you’re watching this from the video, you can tell that I’m actually in my adventure van. This is a 2016 Sprinter 4 X 4 extended that my wife and I converted into an actual RV / office that allows us to travel anywhere we want to go. And work remotely and play. Well besides that, the real story is: This morning I woke up and I had a dilemma. I say a dilemma because any time you’re stuck between two choices: this or that, it’s a dilemma. And so that’s what I mean when I say “Are you stuck in the world of war?” So what I could have done is sat at home, which I love my home, it’s absolutely beautiful, and worked on a course that I’ve been developing for entrepreneurs and businessmen. Now, this course that will only allow eight people and it’s $10,000 a person, and more importantly than just the revenue it brings me, it also brings me a lot of joy and passion. My passion is helping business owners and entrepreneurs with their dreams and I’ve been fortunate enough through a lot of hard work and trial and error of figuring out how to manage all my businesses remotely, and pretty much set them on autopilot. I love teaching other business owners how to do the same that way. That way I can do what I’ve just done.

So I had a choice so I can work on that or I can go snowboarding. It’s a beautiful day. Mount Bachelor is about 20 minutes from our home and so I can hop in the van, have all my gear in here, and get up there on the mountain to snowboard with my friends all day. So I have a dilemma: Do I work on this program that I’m passionate about, that I know can help a lot of entrepreneurs as well as bringing a lot of revenue for my business? Or do I go snowboarding? I chose option C. The option C was the third thing and that’s living in the world of AND. So what I chose to do is work on my program in the morning and then on the way up during that 20-minute drive, I was making phone calls to business owners who want to be in the program, to see if they qualify. Had some great conversations, met some great people that I didn’t really know that reached out to me on social media and really got a chance to know them to see if it was actually a good fit for them to be in my program. And then I got a chance to get some runs in with my friend. Mountain’s beautiful, it’s a bluebird day up here at Mount Bachelor. The snow is perfect so I was able to snowboard. And now on my way down, I’m able to record this daily growth hack for you. So had I chose to live in the world of OR, that’s the world I used to live in, maybe five six years ago, I would have probably stayed a home develop this program and really enjoyed doing the process of it but really thought that I was missing something with not be able to be with a few of my friends snowboarding on the mountain. Instead, I was able to live in the world of AND and make that quick transition with my thinking this morning and trying to figure out “hey, what is the third alternative here?” The third alternative for me was putting a few things aside, planning a little bit ahead, and being able to work on the program, talk to some amazing business owners, do some snowboarding, as well as do this daily growth hack for you that you’re listening to or watching right now.

So what I want to ask you is, “Look in your life in the terms of your mind, your body, your soul, your relationships, and your business. And where are you living? In the world of OR where you should be living in the world of AND?” So sometimes this could be in business, you could say “You know look, I can either fire Suzy or keep her on. Now if Suzy’s not working out and something’s going on, you know maybe you want to actually look at what is the third alternative here? Well, why is it Susie working? Maybe Susie’s not working because she’s not actually educated in her job. So maybe what you can do is keep
Susie on and educate her. Therefore, being able to fulfill all your goals and requirements in the business.

There’s also a million other areas of your life that you can work on whether you live in the world of AND. So what I want you to do for this week is in your journal every time you write the word OR, or if it comes up your vocabulary, write that sentence out, and replace it with the word AND. And ask yourself the question “Can I do both? Can I make this OR an AND?” You know should I go to the gym in the morning or should I pick up groceries for my family? Can I wake up just a little bit earlier to hit the gym and have my grocery list prepped? Therefore, when I get to the grocery store, I can actually pick up my groceries or have them already ready for me because a lot of grocery stores will prep them for you. So again, what I want you to do is look in your life and where in your life are you living in the world of OR versus AND. This is a powerful question and one I think will open your eyes to a lot of things that are unexpected in your life.

That’s it for today’s daily growth hack. I hope you’re living in the world of AND. So what I’d like you to do is go over to authorofyourownstory.com and sign up for our daily newsletter. Extra Time

Today’s topic: extra time.

This is your daily growth hack, where each day we bring you tips, tricks, and insights to help you uplevel your life so you can become the author of your own story and what we call the five to thrive. That’s mind, body, soul, relationships, and business. Now, what do I mean by extra time. I know you’re thinking like “Doug, you know we all have 24 hours in a day. Nobody has extra time.” And that’s totally true, but let’s say you’re the average American.

Now, I know you’re watching this and you’re going off to www.authorofyourownstory.com and you’re participating in the community. You are anything but average. You’re extraordinary. You’re actually one of those people that are taking the bull by the horns, and living life on your terms. And I commend you for that, but let’s take a step back and just think, “What if you were average? You’re the average person, okay? And maybe we’re closer than we think. Well, did you know the average person spends four hours a day watching TV? Two more hours on social media. That’s six hours a day. Well, what could you do with six hours a day? I mean, if you just wrote that down, it would be astonishing. Did you know that if you just eliminated TV and social media, just in those six-hour average times, you can master a foreign language, be fluent in two months?

Think of all the things that you can do just by simply reducing that time. Let’s say you only watch two hours of TV and spend an hour on social media, then that frees up three hours a day of your time to pursue your goals, your passion. Start a new business, really connect with the people that you love, look at those people that in your life and spend time with them. Look at your goals: What do you want to learn? Is a foreign language? Do you want to learn to surf? snowboard? Do you want to travel more? Do you want to start a new business? What I’d love you to do is take out your journal or your notebook, and write down those things you do in a day. Now, everybody that I’ve coached says “Doug, I don’t watch TV. I’m not on social media that much.” Well, come to find out, they are a lot more than they think.

There are lots of good applications out there that can monitor your time on your computer. I use one to track my time to see what I’m on. What websites I’m spending too much time on. How much I’m on Facebook or YouTube or any other websites, reading journals or newspapers or etc online as well as on my mobile device: my cell phone. Really trying to see where I’m at and tracking my time. There’s also just journaling, writing down what you’re doing. You would be shocked to know how much time are you spending in the car, and while you’re in the car, are you listening to something that’s feeding your brain? Are you listening to bubblegum music? pop music or country or whatever it is that you enjoy? That’s fine, but do it with intent. Listen to music as you love it, but don’t listen to it just to drown out the other sounds. Try silence. Try our driving meditation so to speak. Or listen to something like the daily grow hacks that’s going to help you up level your life.

What I’m challenging you to do today is write down your times. Each day, write down all those things that you do. Write down how often you watch tv, watch the people around you. If you’re married with your spouse, don’t try to change this habit just yet. Just record it. Just be aware how often are you actually commuting, how often are you actually spending on social media.

I highly recommend downloading and installing one of these time-tracking applications that you can actually look at at the end of the day and see how much time you’re spending on websites such as Facebook, YouTube, or any of the news media outlets. Look at your time at the end of the week. See where that’s benefiting you and see where you want to move or pivot. Now, I know for me, I found that I was actually watching a lot more TV and I found myself on YouTube quite often.

Now, I watch you Youtube too because I watch shows like this too. I watch things that are going to inspire me or going to uplift my life, but I found that I was watching them a lot more than I thought. I was spending a lot more time on these websites and by consciously making a decision to cut that down, I’ve actually been taking that time and started practicing my Spanish. Now, over next course of a year, I could be fluent in Spanish if I continue on this path. If I multiply the hours they say that it takes to master of foreign language, I’m on track. And by this time next year, when you and I are having a conversation, I’ll be able to speak to you in Spanish, and it’ll be awesome.

So, the whole idea of extra time is being conscious of your time. So write your times down to really track it. I really highly recommend these time tracking devices are available for laptops as well as phones, but also manually tracking things that you’re doing. And I’m not saying TV is bad or social media’s bad. Nothing’s bad. It’s just is that where you want to put your intention? If you were to look at yourself a year from now and look back on how you got to where you want to be, was it the TV time that is really rewarding you? You know when you sit down binge-watching five shows of the Walking Dead, the next day, do you feel better about yourself? Or is that time better spent doing something else? Maybe watching one episode or two or maybe spending another time doing it? Really, what I’m asking to do is just be conscious of your time.

I’d love to hear your results, love for you to share them in the Facebook group. Also, remember to get these show notes and all the other show notes, as well as tips tricks and other ways to uplevel your life, go to:  www.authorofyourownstory.com today.  That’s it for me today. Pareto’s Law and your to-do list

<iframe style="border: none" src="//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/5327571/height/90/width/640/theme/custom/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/87A93A/" height="90" width="640" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Today’s topic is Pareto’s principle and your to-do list.

Now, if you’re like me, your to-do list is a mile long. There’s all kinds of apps these days: web applications with different tips and tricks on how to manage it a to-do list. You know, people are always adding to it. It could be your spouse, another loved one, family member, friends, co-workers.

The list goes on, and no matter how much you chip away at that to-do list, it always seems to keep growing. Well, I want to talk about a technique that I utilize. It helps me be really efficient and get a lot more done as well as spend more time doing the things that I like to do.

Now, the Pareto’s principle also called the Pareto method or the 80/20 rule, is very commonly known as really states that about eighty percent of your results comes from twenty percent of the causes. So what this really is saying is that twenty percent of the actions that you perform really result in eighty percent of the outcomes that you’re looking for.

Now, of course, you always want to start with the outcome in mind, of what you’re actually trying to achieve. But apply it to a to-do list, what you can do is go ahead and print out your to-do list, write it out, or just pull it out wherever you keep it. Look at your phone I don’t care. Either way, what I want you to do is look at that to-do list, look and find those twenty percent of those to-dos that are going to produce eighty percent of the results that you’re desiring. Now, once you’ve highlighted, starred, or mark this twenty percent, you’re going to be able to free up a lot more time because, obviously, what this means is eighty percent of those items on your to-do list give you a marginal twenty percent of the results you’re looking for.

I’m not saying that that twenty percent isn’t significant, but let’s be realistic, you really want to start with that top twenty percent that you’re looking to achieve that’s going to give you those eighty percent of results, so you can free up your time. And what I found, and I think you will too, is as you focus on those twenty percent of those really high achievable items, you’re going to notice

that that other eighty percent just disappears. It goes away, because you’ll actually achieve the outcome you’re desiring. Often times, we make a to-do list with things we think need to be done, but for thinking of the outcome first, and I’m working on that top twenty percent of my list. And I achieve my outcome, I can wipe out the rest of it because I got what I wanted. I think you’ll experience the same thing.

Give this a shot today and let me know how it goes for you. I’d love to hear your feedback. Also, remember to go to authorofyourownstory.com where you can get daily tips, tricks, as well as deeper dives into other material that we talked about. And join our community.
