Sticking To Committments
I don’t know about you, but for me what’s true is I constantly am making commitments. Commitments to myself, commitments to others. Now the commitments I make to myself are actually the most important. The reason that is, is these commitments are commitments of truth and honor that I’m doing to myself.
The Cobra And What It Can Teach You About Fear
Recently I started watching a few of the episodes on YouTube of the Cobra Kai series. If you’re not familiar with it, this is kind of the remake or mock of the old Karate Kid show, where they bring back Daniel LaRusso and his archrival. Back when they’re in their 40s, and its actually pretty funny and I like it. But one of the things that the Cobra Kai teach is one, Cobra Kai never die. The second one is not to be fearful. In other words, to face your fears, right? To come at it with a sense of gusto, whatever life brings to you.
Opportunity Costs And The Sprinkler System
Now you have to understand I was born and raised and grew up in Southern California. There was never snow on the ground unless we drove to it which we did often, so now I’m living in a beautiful house in the mountains and it’s finally time to de-winterize our sprinkler system. See we paid a landscaping company that comes in and they winterize the whole system and I never even thought about it. It’s actually, to be honest with you, it’s all automatic. I don’t even think about watering the plants. We have beautiful trees, beautiful flowers and a beautiful grass are for our child to play, but now it’s time to de-winterize and I thought, heck it doesn’t look that difficult. I can do it myself. So I spent about 20 minutes on YouTube watching YouTube tutorials and then I grabbed my tools and went outside and I went outside head held high, chest out, feeling like a man. I was ready to go de-winterize.
The Power Of Intermittent Fasting
Today I’m going to talk about a health topic, one that relates to your body called intermittent fasting. Now, there’s a lot of information about intermittent fasting on the internet and my background in the wellness field goes over 20 years. So, something that I practice is intermittent fasting, in my daily life. So, intermittent fasting is simply fasting intermittently. And the way that most people do it is they stop eating at a certain time and then don’t eat until another one. For example, usual intermittent fasting times or fasting phases, are 12 to 16 hours. Yet, there’s no hard data on the exact time you need to fast for. So, for example, what I personally do is I stop eating by 7 p.m. and then I don’t actually have another meal until 10 a.m. the next day.
The Cost Of Settling
Just the other day, I had the great benefit of connecting with a friend I hadn’t seen in probably about three years. Now, we connected on social media and actually scheduled a time to get on a video. Now, circumstances had kept us apart. I’ve been busy traveling the world with my family and just really haven’t heard from him. It was great that he reached out to me and I got really excited.
Whose Schedule Goes First?
Now, I just walked in from a trail run. A beautiful trail run along a gorgeous, pristine river. I mean, just absolutely gorgeous. 75 degrees out, as I’m running, the wind is going against me, I can hear the rushing water alongside me, and this is just a short, maybe 5 to 10-minute drive from my home, yet no one else around, except for the birds and beautiful nature.
Pain Provides You 3 Choices
I was talking to a client just last week who is going through a lot of pain. They’re going through a breakup, or what seemed like a breakup in their marriage. Now, they didn’t know if this breakup was going to result in just separation because they definitely were going down that path, or full divorce or even just complete hatred, dividing of their physical belongings, but also their children. Most of the business owners I work with are married and have kids, and this pain conversation comes up often.
Problems Are A Part Of Life
So, let me paint the picture for you or at least something that comes up often. You run into a problem or an issue in life and you’re just like I can’t believe this. Every time I go this route or I do something well, it seems to, a problem seems to rear its ugly head at me. Now, the problem here really isn’t the problem itself. Could you imagine if every time a problem came, you were actually excited? Wow, that would be amazing. So, here’s how to do it. Problems are part of life and the biggest problem that many of us face, especially business owners is we think we shouldn’t have problems. Well, that just doesn’t happen and when you set yourself up in a state of thinking you shouldn’t have problems, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
To You Vs. For You
Now, this is going to be a quick tip but I want you to write this in your journal: What if life wasn’t happening to you but was actually happening for you?
Does History Repeat Itself?
Recently someone told me that you have to beware of your past because you’re going to follow that past with you, whatever you’re doing. I had to say, “I disagree.” In my experience, history only repeats itself if that’s where you’re living, right? The past does not dictate your future unless you’re living in the past.
I’m Not Enough
One of the greatest fears in life is that we are not enough. This is a fundamental fear that crosses all cultures, religions and destinations. We fear that we’re not enough. We’re not enough to be loved. We’re not enough in our business. We’re not enough in our fitness and our health. We’re not good looking enough. We’re not smart enough. We’re not clever enough. We’re not funny enough. We’re not good enough to be a millionaire. We’re not good enough to be a billionaire. We’re not good enough even to make an extra $1,000 a month. We’re not good enough to be in the Author of Your Own Story University. I heard that recently. We’re not good enough to take this journey. We’re not good enough to hire a high level coach and invest in ourselves.
Control And Passion
Control and passion. I was talking to a business owner that I’ve been coaching for almost six months now and one of the things that he really wanted was to find more passion about his business. He was like, “Doug, I really want to find more passion. You know, that fire in the belly that you have.” And in the conversation, I said, “Great. That’s fantastic. And that’s something I can definitely help you with.” And I said, “How do you feel about letting go of some control around your business?” You could see his whole state change. He became stoic and almost fearful, but fearful in a protective way.
What Is The Quality Of Your Life?
Now I’m fortunate enough to actually be a mentor and coach to some of the best life coaches in the world. Now people as me, why would you coach coaches, why do they have a coach? Well of course, if you are a coach you need a mentor. You need somebody else to keep you accountable and to coach you and to raise the bar. I have coaches myself and mentors as well, but the point is when I was talking to one of these coaches, this is a woman who trains people at the highest levels, and I asked her, how are things going?
The World Of Comparison
Oftentimes in the past, I used to find myself comparing myself to others. In the area of fitness and health, I would look around and I thought of myself as an athlete. You can joke about it all you want. I played sports pretty competitively. And even on the field, the soccer field … soccer was my game … I would compare myself. Am I as good enough? Am I as fast as this other guy? Am I as strong? Am I as tough on the ball? I would always be comparing myself.
Do You Invest In Yourself?
I was talking to a young entrepreneur, someone who was very successful at an early age, made millions of dollars before turning 20. Fantastic story and a brilliant person. And in the conversation that I was having with him, what we started talking about were investments, right? He asked for financial investments.
And What Else?
And what else? So I’ve been coaching high-performance people and successful business owners for a very, very long time. Now I’ve done it in different realms. But one of the things I’ve learned is that people don’t give you their deepest answer first, right. And we kind of all know this, but if I were to ask you a question whether it be surface level or deep. Typically, you’re going to give me the answer that your façade or your mask is going to put out. Now you don’t do this consciously usually or maybe you do sometimes in networking type situations. But most people just give their initial answer. So a coaching tip you can use, right you can use this with your family, your friends, your loved ones, your employees etc. Is asking the question what else?
Don’t Fall In Love With Ideas
All too often, as business owners, we fall in love with our own ideas. Now, these can be products, these can be services, these can be things that we’re going after. We can actually grind it out. It’s a gift. It’s a talent. And something that entrepreneurs and business owners have in spades, right?
Revisit: There’s Freedom in Having a Schedule
What do you mean by there’s freedom in a schedule? A schedule is so constricting. I want to be able to do what I want when I want. Well, I do too. But I’ll tell you, this is a battle I’ve had over the years. And I can also tell you this is something we’ve talked about in a previous daily growth hack. But the question keeps coming up over the over again in my conversations with coaching clients, but also in the Author of Your Own Story groups that we have. So, I want to clarify it a little bit more.
